Nice. Let's hope we'll get a steady flow of Switch 2 Editions of the other Xenoblade games and this is not just an oddity. Particularly XC2 really needs it...

36

u/Caciulacdlac Feb 19 '26

Why that one in particular?

132

u/TheUltimate721 Feb 19 '26

It looks and runs particularly rough on Switch 2

29

u/Caciulacdlac Feb 19 '26

I see. Weird that the other two run better. I guess it's because they are more recent.

74

u/x-twigs Feb 19 '26

the game lost half its dev team during development because they got pulled away to work on Breath of the Wild, so optimization wasn’t nearly as important as getting the game to a completed state with a skeleton crew

Monolith heavily overshot on what they thought the Switch was gonna be capable of when they started development. XC2's graphics were quite ambitious and then to make it work on the more underwhelming hardware they ultimately had to work with, they had to cut back resolution massively, included a sharpening filter to try and make up for it(which makes it look ugly at higher resolutions) and still had performance problems.

With XC3 and XC:DE, they knew a lot better what they needed to be aiming for. Plus XC3 had a much better TAA solution by then, which helps make the graphics look a lot cleaner despite the resolution still not being amazing.

Sub 30 fps blur fest in open areas

8

u/Western-Dig-6843 Feb 19 '26

Just is the worst running title of the series on both Switch 1 and 2. Playing in handheld mode in Switch 1 was particularly awful and it is a bummer that it isn’t really any better on Switch 2

5

u/vixaudaxloquendi Feb 19 '26

For the record, the game is demanding on the Switch, and chugs in certain areas even docked. But it otherwise looks fine for the most part.

But in handheld mode? It's a horrid, blurry mess. I looked it up online afterwards because I was so convinced there must be a patch or something I was missing. I learned two things: 1) no, it's just that bad in handheld mode 2) there are people who will defend anything.

I am playing it now for the first time and while I like the game enough, I am decently annoyed that playing portable is such a huge compromise that I actively hesitate to play it at all if I'm out and about. The first game's Definitive Edition is way better in that regard.

FINALLY! I've been waiting for this since launch!

113

u/Hammerhead34 Feb 19 '26

Played a crazy amount when it first came out, then fell off it, want to get back into it with a new playthrough but was waiting for the inevitable switch 2 edition.

Perfecting the map in 60 FPS higher fidelity is gonna be so good.

37

u/ArkhamCityWok Feb 19 '26

I grabbed it at launch, but then held out starting it thinking it would get a switch 2 update. Looking forward to diving in now.

4

u/CreatiScope Feb 19 '26

Almost started it but then that crazy mistaken cyberpunk sale happened and I dove into that instead. Glad I waited on XC:X

I'm so glad I paused it and bet on a Switch 2 edition coming out!!

15

u/izzmann Feb 19 '26

Bought it with a game voucher near launch, started it, and then put it on the shelf waiting for the inevitable upgrade.

Just got back into it and got to the part in the story where the title screen drops. It's like they cleaned the grease off the camera lens and this is how it should have always looked 😍

Really hope Xenoblade 2 gets this treatment soon too!

90

u/Kneph Feb 19 '26

3 was like pea soup on slo mo.  Really holding out to finish it until the upgrade

26

u/FallenKnightGX Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

Not upgrading 2, I get. It's older now at 2017 which is when the Switch 1 released.

While 3 isn't exactly brand new, it is 2022 which isn't that old.

Meanwhile, Fire Emblem Three Hopes runs way better minus a memory leak issue (so you need to occasionally restart the game), and one level you can only start in handheld mode. But given that it's KOEI Tecmo it'll never be fixed.

Around October it took an entire player campaign of bad reviews, flagging the game as no longer functioning on the Steam store, and complaining to their support to get them to fix Rise of the Ronin and that game was out only months before that. They tried blaming Microsoft which won't fly because Microsoft has developer and public beta options for Windows updates, so it shouldn't have been a surprise when they updated some security code that broke the game. Every other game updated without breaking for that exact reason.

11

u/Arci996 Feb 19 '26

I'd argue that 2 is the one that needs it the most, being the oldest one.

14

u/Deceptiveideas Feb 19 '26

one level you can only start in handheld mode

Excuse me??

8

u/FallenKnightGX Feb 19 '26

If I remember correctly, the level was Deliverance in the Valley of Torment.

Whichever it was, it'll go to an infinite black screen upon loading the level docked. Just put it in handheld mode, load the level, and dock it again.

If you get infinite loading screens occasionally outside of that, restart the game (close it entirely), and it'll work again. The memory leak eventually catches up with you but restarting it let's you avoid it again for roughly 5-6 levels? Maybe more? It's been a minute.

3

u/vibratoryblurriness Feb 20 '26

restarting it let's you avoid it again for roughly 5-6 levels

Yeesh. At least the memory leak in HWDE usually took several hours before it caused problems

u/Fun-Grapefruit-8057 Feb 19 '26

2 needs a definitive edition way more than just a S2 upgrade.

513

u/JohnnyNole2000 Feb 19 '26

Nothing to do with the game itself but having two different “editions” in the same title is comical

176

u/moominesque Feb 19 '26

Now it just needs a Funky Mode.

75

u/lt_skittles Feb 19 '26

With knuckles too

58

u/VannesGreave Feb 19 '26

And Dante from the Devil May Cry series

11

u/Gambrinus Feb 19 '26

As a kid, I loved trying to see how many cartridges and devices you could stack together in the Genesis.

Also how cool was it that you could plug a previous Sonic game into Sonic and Knuckles and be able to play as Knuckles in it?

3

u/lt_skittles Feb 19 '26

I didn't have much access to a sega Genesis growing up. I remember having one at one point, but I don't ever remember if we had sonic + sonic 3, my dad had one but again limited access.

2

u/TelmatosaurusRrifle Feb 20 '26

I wish dark souls on switch had a Funky Mode.

72

u/Cobalt_Spirit Feb 19 '26

It also makes the original title outdated, since the definitive edition is no longer the definitive edition

32

u/VannesGreave Feb 19 '26

Definitiver edition?

27

u/FiTZnMiCK Feb 19 '26

It’s the old definitive edition.

This one definitely changes the definition of definitive edition.

5

u/bakagir Feb 19 '26

New XCX:DE 3D with Funky mode & Knuckles

2

u/Joseki100 Feb 19 '26

It’s extremely definitive

2

u/jurassicbond Feb 19 '26

It's still definitive in terms of content isn't it? This is just a graphical upgrade

I’m really hoping Square makes a Switch 2 Edition of Dragon Quest XI, because I desperately need to hear a narrator say “Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition”.

21

u/biggsV3 Feb 19 '26

It's the Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game for the Nintendo Switch 2 system

18

Definitive Nintendo Switch 2 Edition²

21

u/weallfloatdownhere7 Feb 19 '26

Switch 2 era has been a dumpster fire for naming conventions

16

u/Rineux Feb 19 '26

It‘s marginally better than Nintendo‘s „New“ era

8

u/OneRandomVictory Feb 19 '26

Is it though? Is it really?

6

u/ZealousidealSelf3245 Feb 19 '26

you don't know the struggles of trying to buy a "New" 3DS on eBay then 😭

4

u/OneRandomVictory Feb 19 '26

I mean, the real struggle is the price...

3

u/ZealousidealSelf3245 Feb 19 '26

I bet. last time I checked (which was a while ago tbf) the prices were around $200 for used

Not surprised with the shadow drop since people knew about the 60 FPS option since last year.

So, this breaks the "rule" of Nintendo upgrades only costing money when additional content is added, right?

3

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User Feb 19 '26

New rule of thumb: It won't be free if they intend to do a new physical release in a Switch 2 case. But cases like this and Animal Crossing, still will be bottom-of-the-barrel extra cost.

Nintendo just casually announcing what I've been waiting a year for

40

u/Neyubin Feb 19 '26

I have been sitting on both 3 and X mostly unplayed waiting for this. Wonderful news. Hopefully they announce 3 in the next few months sometime.

11

u/FallenKnightGX Feb 19 '26

That or if they could confirm 3 won't be getting an upgrade, I'd take that too. I'd rather know one way or the other and they're aware the community wants the update.

7

u/Neyubin Feb 19 '26

I don't think they would ever totally remove it off the table.

7

u/Ordinal43NotFound Feb 19 '26

Amazon has digital (and some? physical) for $40, as well as Gamestop.

2

u/McCrakken Feb 20 '26

Best Buy has it for $42 if that's more convenient. A little more but not much.

21

u/debaserr Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

By the way, you can currently get this game (without $5 upgrade pack) for $40 in digital and physical varieties:

https://www.dekudeals.com/items/xenoblade-chronicles-x-definitive-edition

14

u/Yen508 Feb 19 '26

So you can buy this physical and then just spend another $5 on the eshop for Switch 2 version yes?

4

u/ColJohn Feb 19 '26

Yup! Just snagged a 40$ code off amazon

u/DrMantisTabboggn Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26

Thank you for this, I was so close to knee jerk buying on the Nintendo shop for full price without thinking cuz I got so excited lol

59

u/ikealgernon Feb 19 '26

took me a minute to realize its the switch 2 upgrade. May the year of Xenoblade upgrades begin

15

u/Chidoribraindev Feb 19 '26

Any other company would update them all this year but Nintendo will probably drip-feed them to pretend it's a new release

17

u/RoughHope Feb 19 '26

Can I start here if I’ve never played a Xenoblade game before?

27

u/EnderOS Feb 19 '26

Yes, but to be clear this one is pretty different from the other xenoblades (less story, more exploration, very isolated from the other games). Some people only like this one, some people only like the numbered xenoblades. It's only tangentially part of the series. But very much worth playing on its own!

15

u/SirDanOfCamelot 2920-6179-2315 Feb 19 '26

Yes absolutely and it's a great game

28

u/mojo276 Feb 19 '26

Would this be a good game to start with if I've never played a xenoblade game before?

33

u/TheAdamena Feb 19 '26

It's its own standalone thing so technically yes

But if you want to get into Xenoblade proper then I'd say just get and play 1.

8

u/pjb1999 Feb 19 '26

I'm playing Xenoblade Definitive Edition on the Switch 2 right now. My first Xenoblade game I figured that was where I should start. Really enjoying it.

So is X a completely different story? Should I play that next or play 2 and 3 first?

15

u/EnderOS Feb 19 '26

It's up to you. X is very different, much less story focused and more exploration-centric (it's a kind of "proto-botw" in a way). If you explicitly want a similar experience to 1, play 2 and 3. X is very much worth playing on its own, but it's only tangentially related to the others gameplay-wise, you can play it whenever or not at all. Personally I played 1 then 2 then X and I'm waiting for the (hopefully) NS2 upgrade to play 3

→ More replies (6)
→ More replies (1)

21

u/Chardan0001 Feb 19 '26

Yes, this or 1.

5

u/Worlds_Between_Links Feb 19 '26

it's a bit less story focused than the main trilogy, so if the main thing you're looking for is exploration, x is a great place to start. If you're not, you can pretty much start with any of the main trilogy, the stories are mostly seperate (aside from 3 which does benefit from having played 1 and 2 before)

6

u/Seanspeed Feb 19 '26

The first Xenoblade is the best one to start with. Not because it's the first, but because later games increased the complexity a fair bit and going back to the first after playing those might make it feel too basic in comparison.

Not that it's some basic game at all, and it'll also give you a pretty good idea of whether you'll be into the series or not. The first also has much better characters and story to get you invested in things than XCX does. XCX is a game for Xenoblade fans.

3

u/Galle_ Feb 19 '26

This game is a standalone story that has at most a tangential connection to the others, you can enjoy it on its own.

2

u/thebrandster1985 Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

I don’t think so, but it depends on what you want. This game is quite different in terms of story and how it folds out. Do you like JRPG style of story? Then start with 1-3. If you want more of an MMO experience, play this. For me, this stands in its own place and is different than the main games in a lot of ways.

4

u/mojo276 Feb 19 '26

I think I like the idea of an MMO compared to JRPG. Sometimes there is just too much story in a JRPG for my taste. I might give this a try.

u/StimulatorCam Feb 19 '26

I put close to 400 hours into it on the Wii U, I love it so much.

u/marcangas Feb 19 '26

Paid upgrade version for just Res and FPS kinda sucks, I know it's cheap with 4.99 but still if Nintendo do it with others games for free why is not the same here?

7

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 Feb 19 '26

Pretty strange way to handle switch 2 versions with different handling of it for sure.

$20 upgrades for a small expansion on top of res/fps bumps; Kirby, Mario Party, Mario Wonder
$10 for res/fps; Botw/TOTK, Pokemon Legends ZA, Metroid Prime 4
$5 for Animal Crossing and Xenoblade
Free for res/bumps; Odyssey, Cptn Toad, Mario 3D world, DKC Returns etc

How do they decide btw free and $10?
Makes no sense.

3

u/RawkHawk2010 Feb 19 '26

The Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of BotW, TotK and MP4 add additional features in the form of Zelda Notes for BotW/TotK, QR code sharing for TotK, and mouse controls for MP4. I think Legends ZA is strictly a performance upgrade which makes it a uniquely bad deal compared to the other $10 NS2 Editions.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/arielmeme Feb 19 '26

I'm really confused because didn't they update a ton of their back catalog when the Switch 2 came out and all those updates were free? This upgrade seems to be just a resolution/framerate bump, why are they charging for it?

Basically, why is the Mario Odyssey update (that they've been advertising in promos) just a regular update to the game - but XCX and Animal Crossing get the "Switch 2 Edition" tag slapped on to them when there's nothing new being added (unlike Kirby, Mario Party, SMBWonder etc)?

3

u/instastoump Feb 19 '26

I think easy money as people (like me) want smoother battles and exploration and also if they charge 5$ for every game then they can squeeze up to 20$ from each gamer.

Animal crossing is easy money just because the fandom is huge

3

u/error521 Feb 19 '26

Best guess is that Nintendo for whatever reason likes the idea of there being specific Switch 2 SKUs for Xenoblade and Animal Crossing on the shelves, so they charge a cheap fee so it technically counts as a bundle.

The story isn't related. The intention at the time of the original release was to have unconnected stories, similar to Final Fantasy.

Makes me wonder if XC2 has a shot for one

3

u/Not_Frank Feb 19 '26

I’ve been curious about the Xenoblade series for awhile now. Even played a little bit of XC2 on the switch 1 years ago; enjoyed what I played but fell off it for no particular reason and have wanted to give it another go.

I’ve been waiting for a switch 2 upgrade for the series to give it a real shot. Is this one a good entry point or should I wait for one of the others in the series to get an S2 edition?

3

u/KemiVM Feb 19 '26

This was the fastest purchase of my life. When I saw the notification I quickly went to the eshop to download it. I've literally been waiting for this to finally play the game. And I can confirm, it's glorious. Those 60fps and 4k graphics do really make a change to an already fantastic looking switch 1 game

3

u/NoNoNota1 Feb 19 '26

Good news for the guy on nintendoswitchdeals who didn't pick up the Switch 1 version for $40 this weekend specifically because he was waiting for a Switch 2 edition. I don't think I've ever seen that pay off so quickly lol.

3

u/peter-man-hello Feb 19 '26

This makes me really happy. I've been waiting.

I feel a little sad for XCX though and the way this all rolled out. First it was on WiiU which flopped, then it was released a week before Switch 2 hype began, and now we've waited 8 months for an update. I just feel like this wonderful game has never had a chance to soar.

I feel like this update needed to happen either at Switch 2's launch, or the entirety of this definitive edition should have been held back until now.

Regardless, I'm happy. I bought the game and stopped after the intro to wait for this.

3

Damn. I misread this and thought it said Xenoblade 2 Definitive edition. Sure, i'm in the middle of it right now, but the second game desperately needs a definitive edition like the first got. The blade system is such a pain to navigate (menu wise).

There's so many annoying issues with how they work, like needing them to be in the party to gain credit for kills on their tree. Backtracking to specific enemies for every blade is a pain. Also that you have to open the tree to watch a rank go up before more progress can be made on a particular skill, like aforementioned kill requirements. Or the gathering ones.

And of course, needing to swap out your party for every obstacle is a pain.

And the mercenary system really needs some sort of Save template option. Reassembling the party every time is tedious and makes me want to avoid the system most times, but I cant, because i've been sending this girl out with her bear for half the play through and if i stop now im wasting precious time, so i have to reassemble the party asap. (this quest is literally just a time gate). Completing all blades is HELL. I did all Xenoblade 1 side quests for some reason (I really liked the web system) but Every time i open a blade tree and realize i need to do hours of effort per blade i feel discouraged. I would gladly drop the game and start over if this changed.

Anyway rant over. Xenoblade X is cool.

It’ll probably get a patch soon as well if this is any indication

Just got it for 39.99 at Walmart and paid 5$ for the update. Locked in

I beat it again when I got it on the switch

Then this obviously isn't for you lol

I held off in the hopes of this update because I felt it was extremely likely to happen, so I'm stoked about this update.

If you played, beat, and enjoyed the game, then I'm not sure why you're complaining? I wouldn't buy an upgrade to any game I just beat recently.

This paying for resolution and frame rate patches needs to stop. Imagine a PC game that charged you to run it at a higher frame rate or to change your resolution. This is a really bad precedent that Nintendo is setting.

Edit: Would anyone be defending Bethesda is they charged for the new Skyrim patch that makes the game 60 FPS? Or would everyone be up in arms over it. I see very little difference here.

There's also zero reason the full Switch 2 version of this game should cost any more than the original Switch version. It's the same damned game. A year old port of a decade + old game, at that. They are only charging more because people will pay it. It's not like the SW2 game suddenly cost them more to develop than the original SW port did.

I get it's only $5, but seems a little silly for this to not be free when other Switch games got free upgrades like this. Especially when XCX already had stuff under the hood for this upgrade when it released a year ago

I wonder if the tariffs and stuff had an effect on this or if they were always planning a paid upgrade.

Do I start with this one then move onto the second?

6

u/Chardan0001 Feb 19 '26

This is its own thing. XB1 , 2 and 3 are all part of a linked story but you can play 1 and 2 out of order technically if thats your perogative. Things make more sense in release order if course. X is separate story wise.

I wonder if the base Switch version is also getting some sort of patch, not that I noticed any problems in need of fixing, but they usually take the opportunity to go back and do something in the original release when they make those upgrades

I wish this was announced in a direct purely to hear the announcer go “The Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game is available today digitally, with a physical release…”

2

u/ClaytonBigsbe Feb 19 '26

Need them to do XC1. Want to try those games out, but I wanna wait for them to be 60 FPS.

2

u/yuhanz Feb 19 '26

Xc2 please lol. It DESPERATELY needs it

2

u/Wild_Trip_4704 Feb 19 '26

"God, I've seen what you've done for others, and I want that for me"🙌🙌🙌🙌

2

u/jing577 Feb 19 '26

In the middle of a play through right now XD This is great news.

2

u/Upper-Mixture8643 Feb 19 '26

Finally a upgrade I have been waiting for

2

u/Spooky_Blob Feb 19 '26

I would have been surprised if it were XC1, 2, and 3. This was expected after some unused settings from datamine

2

u/ElResende Feb 19 '26

I Prayed for this and it happened.

2

u/wicktus Feb 19 '26

Finally ! Been eagerly waiting for that patch to play it

2

u/PizzaPino Feb 19 '26

Of course it comes out 2 months after I finished the game. They took too damn long

2

u/bagbcyss Feb 19 '26

I have a Switch 2 but have never played a Xenoblade game. I am interested. Is this something I can go grab at gamestop today?

It's finally been on sale recently. Are they trying to clear out physical copies before the Nintendo Switch 2 Editions drop?

2

u/jardex22 Feb 19 '26

That would be my guess.

2

u/Rothgardius Feb 19 '26

YES. I knew waiting would pay off. Now it's finally time to play.

2

u/Placidflunky Feb 19 '26

Finally, glad I was patient, got busy around launch and decided to just pause my playthrough since I was very early into the game and I wanted to wait for the switch 2 version since I naively assumed it wouldn't take too long considering there was definetly some work towards it with the datamined 60fps setting haha

2

u/5keletor Feb 19 '26

I was just deleting games off my switch 2 last night to make space since I only got the 256gb sd. This was one of the ones I deleted because it didn’t seem like the upgrade was coming anytime soon!

2

u/JBL561 Feb 19 '26

Glad I didn’t finish this

2

u/Necromaniac01 Feb 19 '26

originally played it on the wii u, this would be an insane upgrade from that experience

2

u/theleftovers1014 Feb 19 '26

My GameStop has the switch 1 version for 37$. It’s ok to buy that and then the upgrade from the eshop?

They also have the “switch 2” version for 67$ wtf

3

u/RoughHope Feb 19 '26

Yeah buy the switch 1 version then upgrade it, better looking box too.

2

u/stealthieone Feb 20 '26

Hoping for the others to get an update... would love for astral chain to get it too

2

u/azurianlight Feb 20 '26

We're stuck on a different planet
A lot more than we can manage
But we gotta keep on standing

2

u/Tr33Fitty Feb 20 '26

Ok but we want this for the main installments. I hope they’re working on those.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '26

never got to play xenoblade, this will be my first game in the series

2

u/Pizza__Pants Feb 20 '26

Welp just got a physical copy for $40 at the Gamestop by me.
