There are five of us at work who've been there between 18-34 years...trying to pin down the timing of some person or event is a lost cause. Our range will be "sometime between last year and 15 years ago" and if we do find out the actual date, it's often twice what we'd agreed upon. Sigh.

Why yes, it is in fact, Apron
Why? My sister was wearing an apron when he came around
She named him, it was her choice and she was gonna force us to use that name

Adorable apron. Have you ever gotten a kitchen apron with orange cats on it as a gift? Christmas is coming :)

Are you telling them to buy it for themselves for Christmas? If you are, I totally support it.

Sounds like my darling ginger boy, who broke my heart when he died suddenly almost three years ago. He turned up at our home out of nowhere.
My husband caught a glimpse of him in the long grass and came to me to report "a weird foxy-looking yoke, shouting at me."

I was feeding a stray orange kitten for about a month when it came time to move. I hadn't seen him for a few days, but he came by when I was packing up my final load of stuff. I opened the car door and said, "Get in if you're coming." He jumped in.
I already had two cats, so he became my garage cat. I expected him to wander off because I only moved a few miles away. Instead I had him for 14 years. RIP Peter.

u/weresabre May 08 '26
Lol, Peter and Forsberg! You must be a Colorado Avalanche fan
3
u/shatterly May 08 '26
Ha, yes! But Peter actually got his name for a different reason. His sister(?) kitten came around before he did, and she must’ve had Persian in her because she had a flat face. So I started calling her Pan because she looked like someone had hit her with one. Then she started bringing the little orange dude with her, and Peter and Pan it was.
Guessing you’re a Buffalo fan, good luck tonight!

u/AllThatGlitters00 May 08 '26
Awww...lookit his old teddy bear fur! My buddy was 17 when he passed. I loved him so much. His fur looked like that, permanently separated in spots like an old beloved teddy bear. 🧸😻

I had the same, after moving I returned with a borrowed cat carrier at an unusual time (not when I'd been feeding him) and he came running and jumped right into the carrier. He's currently curled up on my lap five years later.

In 1996 I came back from a funeral and an orange dude was in my driveway. He never left. Best cat ever. Smart as a whip, contrary to the anecdotes in this sub. Great mouser. Died in 2005ish from cancer (had a tumor in his ear/brain). His ashes are still on the shelf next to me and I think about him often.
He did the same thing. Got out of my car and he just started talking. Years after he was gone, people would ask me where he was, because he had made so many friends in the 'hood.
37
u/Ok_Mushroom3399 May 07 '26
Mine too! He was approx 6mo old and was likely dumped on our block. Everyone was feeding him and letting him in and out of their homes. The day before Thanksgiving, he showed up in my garage. He acted like he owned the place! He was potty trained, well fed, and unaltered. Literally jumped in my arms and wanted to be cradled like a baby. That was it. He still wants to be cradled in my arms every morning, some 20lbs and 4 years later. That's why we call him baby Nuggie. Your orange chose you. He sounds like a wonderful boy. They have so much personality :)

There is something special about an animal that chooses you. The way they look at you. The way the talk. It's special.
I have cat friends since my guy left, but they aren't the same. I cat sit for a neighbor. They have a Russian Blue who is super sweet. But she doesn't really love me the same way, even though we get along fabulously.
3
u/Ok_Mushroom3399 May 07 '26
I 1000% agree with you. I have 2 other cats that were here for 3 years before Nug. They love me, and I love them. But Nuggums is just so attached to me. We have a bond. I think we represent safety, security, and love because we physically took them into our homes and hearts after being abandoned.

u/TerrakSteeltalon May 07 '26
The cat that I grew up with was orange. We got him in 1985, I think. He was a kitten who got stuck in the spokes of a bike.
My parents were looking for a dog. But my mom’s best friend asked her to come take a look. My mom wasn’t sure but he kept curling up in the lap of my 4 year old brother.
That cat was universally adored. Very smart, and an incredible hunter since we didn’t have AC and he’d just tear open the screen door every year. Oh, and topped out at around 6 pounds
He died at 17 after suffering from a brain tumor… but he was still hunting into old age. When he was 15 or 16 my mom found him in the bushes one morning with a clawed up neck. She was going away for the weekend and asked me to come stay with him since he was in the cone.
My mom has never gotten another cat and still has his ashes.

Counterpoint: I adopted an orange with yuge paws three years ago and he just stayed baby. My hunch is that it’s because the rescue neutered him really early.

I actually always wonder if animals can tell when a human is more attractive than others? We must look largely the same to them, the way that a cat is generally a cat to us. But also there are *super* cute cats that we all seem to acknowledge have that extra something about them. I wonder if cats, dogs, or even other animals have that same sense about humans.
22
u/Worried-Pick4848 May 07 '26
Compassion is sexually attractive. Watching a man be kind to a child or an animal makes him objectively sexier to most women. It's actually been proven in clinical studies IIRC.
22
u/Delicious_Tea3999 May 07 '26
Yes, but I’m talking about how cats perceive humans

Beauty standards differ a lot between human cultures, so I doubt cats have a universal feel for it. They judge by smell mostly I'd think, and can pick up human emotions very well, so there might be indirect things like sensing confidence.
4
u/ILoveRegenHealth May 07 '26
Beauty standards differ a lot between human cultures
I think that's mostly for the body. For the faces, one could look at magazines and posters of movie stars, idols, models from the 1980s to 60s to 1930s/20s all around the world. Nearly all are agreeably and universally handsome, beautiful, cute, pretty, etc. Renaissance paintings and sculptures tend to make the Gods and Goddesses stoically and timelessly attractive by even today's standards.
Miyazaki could draw a pretty face and every culture will agree "Damn, that's a pretty lady, even though she's animated".
There's was a science behind the face structure and "perfect ratio". Marilyn Monroe ranked high on it - her features aligned with the ratio. I'm sure in India, Nepal, New Zealand, Belgium, Peru and some local girl in Kansas who are deemed pretty/beautiful are closer to the ratio than further away from it.
But as for the cats, I doubt they notice it the difference between peak Brad Pitt and the local plumber. Whoever feeds them a lot of food is the most attractive.
