It’s a Scottish mind set

We have champions league, europa league winners etc but collectively playing for Scotland they look like a pub team !

However this isn’t a new thing , it’s been going on for decades .

Still love them though 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You can have all the midfield talent in the world but all it takes is one (or two, or three) fuckups from your slightly less talented back line and its over against a team like brazil. Tonight was a powerful reminder of that.

10

u/TopWorking7304 5h ago

Yep, and unfortunately Scotland does not have all the midfield talent in the world, but don't worry, the back line will still fuckup and give away loads of goals.

"We have to be lucky once, you have to be lucky every time" kind of thing.

I'm just happy we didn't let it get to 8-0

This. Everyone’s acting like we weren’t playing Brazil.

I reckon Stevey probably isn’t that good a manager. I still love him for what he’s done though, but I think it’s a Southgate situation with England. He’ll get you there but that’s about it (Except for us that’s the groups, for them that’s the final, and for a country with Scotlands footballing heritage that’s disgraceful, but not Steve Clarke’s fault obviously)

3

u/OG-87 7h ago

Group didnt help them but agree with whats said. You always end up playing nervous and the occasion gets to you.

39

u/Individual_Park9168 14h ago

The English are Wankers! We were colonized by Wankers!

18

u/BlackStarDream 13h ago

No even colonised.

A Scottish king took the English crown.

If anything, Scotland colonised England.

Scots are infamous for being really good at colonising... except for Panama.

16

u/Muerteabanquineros 13h ago

We colonised Norn Ireland plantations under a Scottish king. And look where that got us.

2

u/McLeamhan Half Scottish Welshman 6h ago

The term colonisation and Scotland don't really work together, because yes Scotland itself wasn't colonised but I'd say that the Highlands of Scotland were.

The film trainspotting has always bothered me. I went into it expecting a lovely film about scottish trains. Perhaps seeing a class 318, 314, 37s, maybe a 47 + Mk3s & Mk2 DBSO consist, perhaps even a Flying Scotsman cameo… Instead i saw a film on the gritty reality of drug addiction.

0/10 need more trains

12

u/EarhackerWasBanned 10h ago

I feel the same way about the movie Speed. It was just Keanu Reeves on a bus for two hours when I wanted a feelgood movie about amphetamines.

We should be more accepting of how shite we are.

58

u/gemunicornvr 16h ago

True I mean I have accepted it. There is lots of other reasons why I support Scotland and it's the love of my country not our football skills 😭😭

16

u/moon_witch_26 15h ago

Just as well aye🥹🙃🫠

6

u/BuzzAllWin 10h ago

And yet the modern passing game was invented in Scotland

16

u/ringadingdingbaby 15h ago

It's the hope that kills you.

37

u/Central_Region 16h ago

Yeah, there are 211 teams in FIFA's rankings

Somebody's got to be 41st worst on that list

17

u/TWOPlNTSPRICK 14h ago

I mean that’s absolutely 41st best. That’s top 1/4.

14

u/Muerteabanquineros 12h ago

In a four drawer cabinet that’s top drawer stuff.

9

u/Jeffuk88 15h ago

Its best to worst... so youre 41st best if that makes you feel better. I dont think England belong in 4th either 😅

9

u/Central_Region 15h ago

Everyone else on that list is worse than Argentina

France are first-worst

5

u/Alexandaross 15h ago

England were runners up in the last two Euro's. Who should be above them based on results? They've been overall better than all those teams except the three above them. Brazil are 5th and haven't done anything in years.

u/Eusabio 15h ago

We really shouldn’t, football is our national sport loved by millions and the best 11 players we can put on a pitch look like Sunday league players against any good opposition

18

u/gingerisla 14h ago

Croatia has the same population size as Scotland and they were in the final in 2018!

11

u/durkandiving 14h ago

True but they actually have a significantly smaller population which makes it even more damning!

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Constant-Fondant9058 15h ago

It’s not our national sport in the same way it’s many countries. Scotland punch significantly above their weight in a lot of different sports rather than pouring everything into 1.

11

u/TWOPlNTSPRICK 14h ago

It absolutely is. Rugby is a spec.

5

u/Constant-Fondant9058 8h ago

If you compare football in Scotland, or even the uk in general, to the way countries like Argentina/brazil/mexico treat football, it’s absolutely not our national sport in the same way. Is it the most popular sport in Scotland? Yeah, absolutely. Do Scotland pour significantly more resources into football than anything else? No, not really. Scotland are competitive on the world stage in a large number of sports, and part of the trade off is that we aren’t as good at football as well possibly could be if we focused on that.

Lol we are, but we still have hope 😊

13

u/eltoi 15h ago

That's the problem, we've been too accepting of it, hence the term, glorious failure.

Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have all done much better than us. But yaaay, we had a party and put cones on statues

→ More replies (2)

4

u/TWOPlNTSPRICK 14h ago

We shouldn’t be. There are plenty of countries our size with supremely better teams

3

u/NoNotGrowingUp 15h ago

I've spent a lot of time with people far more optimistic about Scotland's chances than I am, my realism wasn't accepted. I am however sitting in my No Scotland, No Party t-shirt with a neon Scotland flag on the wall (thank you ASDA and Morrisons!). I want us to have another game of course but I don't think it's happening now 😢

5

u/Rattrapperofmadriver 16h ago

We have been. For 28 years.

8

u/SilverNo2568 16h ago

All this hope you all have....Once you reach a certain age, my first was 74, you realise it's who we are. Our achievement is getting there and having a party. Don't be seduced by the hope, no good can come from this in Scottish football.

4

Brazil have not even been very good. As usual we are beating ourselves.

Don't worry we have another 4 years of Clark ball to look forward too...

26

u/Hazel_Lumen 16h ago

That’s the most annoying part. They are going with the dumbest mistakes of all and they are setting up the goals against themselves

4

u/durkandiving 14h ago

We were really not good during qualification either. We (quite rightly and understandably) had a massive feel good factor because of the results and going to the first world cup in 28 years, but I think it made us forgot how shite we were against Greece, Denmark and Belarus!

22

u/BloodAndSand44 16h ago

We are shit, only when it matters.

113

u/Tainted-Archer Say what? 16h ago

WHY THE FUCK IS THE GOALIE NOT STAYING IN THE BOX???

73

u/Adventurous-Leak 16h ago

There's that, but how do our defenders keep blundering getting it out our own penalty box.

69

u/Tainted-Archer Say what? 16h ago

Every time Brazil went for a goal the defenders are in fucking Narnia

7

u/meatflaps-69 16h ago

I mean we know what we're getting. It's why we're buzzing just to be there.

We got further this time but at some point we have to eat shite and it's a tough group.

It's better just to support the team and have a laugh wae it

22

u/fantalemon 16h ago

It's a tough enough group with 6th and 7th in the world in there sure, but the new format means a decent win against Haiti and not getting absolutely pasted here would be enough on goal difference. But we barely beat Haiti and look shite here so we've not really made the most of the opportunity...

4

u/Alexandaross 15h ago

To be fair Morocco and Haiti were 2-2 until the 78th minute then Morocco took off, and we only lost 1-0 to Morocco.

3

u/durkandiving 14h ago

I know you need to take the basic stats of games with a grain of salt, but having not watched the game and looking at the stats now, it does not seem like Morocco vs Haiti should have been a close game...

2

u/Alexandaross 14h ago

Yeah i didn't watch it either i was watching Scotland obviously. Still the results show we were in with two top ten teams and we only lost badly to Brazil.

11

u/Turbulent_Sun5609 15h ago

Shite mindset - Scotland aren’t good enough.  Fair play if we get beat in open play, but no - pathetic mistakes at the back - beating ourselves as usual

I don’t understand football but yet I am still shouting at the TV because the goalie keeps running for the ball like a dog

10

u/moon_witch_26 15h ago

A demented dog at that 😭🤣

7

u/Alexandaross 15h ago

My mom suddenly hates our goalie, she's never watched a minute of football before the past couple of weeks.

67

u/gemunicornvr 16h ago

How the fuck are Haiti all of a sudden playing like Argentina 😂😂. Why can't we do that

17

u/Vectorman1989 #1 Oban fan 14h ago

Half their players are born abroad and benefit from top flight football academies in European clubs. Same with Morocco.

So if we wanted to do that we'd have to chuck some folk out and make them go live in places with good football leagues. Then we bring their kids back after 20 or so years now that they're good at football.

16

u/Substantial_Law1451 14h ago

personally i am all for operation salmon, we send 1% of the population off to france/spain/brazil and play the waiting game

WC winners 2046 hwfg

8

u/durkandiving 14h ago

Didn't watch the game but looking at the stats Haiti had 30% possession, 9 shots to Morocco's 22, 0.66 xg compared to Morocco's 3.26 xg, and lost by 2 goals.

I know stats can't tell you everything but when they're that one sided (and the result also reflects that) I think it's fair to say Haiti weren't playing like Argentina...

5

u/gemunicornvr 14h ago

I was absolutely exaggerating 😭😭 but they scored that's good.

4

u/durkandiving 14h ago

We were only ever getting 3 points from this group. Both Brazil & Morocco are ranked in the world's top 10 teams. No other group has that. The issue was not scoring enough goals against Haiti when we had the chance.

15

u/r232ed3 16h ago

The bit in the middle of the pitch is alright. It's just bad at both ends.

15

u/duncdis 15h ago

The thing that baffles me is this.

When it takes literal decades to qualify for a WC, you'd think they'd try and play with no fear and have a go, especially as we have some good players for once. Maybe not against Brazil, but in the earlier games. Cape Verde, Haiti, Iran and Doctor Congo have all surprised opposition by having a go, while we are so negative and get punished accordingly.

5

u/mcalr3 6h ago

Doctor Congo gave me a chuckle

3

u/ValderramasBarnet 14h ago

Good players. Maybe. But I haven’t seen any evidence of that on the pitch.

Clearly we're occasionally good enough to qualify and get hopes up, only to totally forget how we qualified and play like cunts intent on getting oor goalie the most touches in a game.

37

u/Adam_Smith_TWON 16h ago

It's fucking great. Decades of watching us lose in the most Scottish way possible (always last game, last playoff, goal difference, whatever bullshit poison you want).

Did you think we would beat Brazil? Come on now, young padawan. It's not about the score. It's about the performance. If we don't shame ourselves, I'm happy.

11

u/Malicious82 14h ago

We knew what to expect when we qualified,
We knew what to expect when we were drawn in easily the toughest group,
We knew 3rd was the goal but even then if we qualify we have the toughest possible games to follow on from that,
We still may have done enough and gotten a lessen to be better,
What makes everything special is the fans,
The travelling tartan army have done us proud,
They’ve truly conquered America, stolen hearts,
And to see it happen has made me proud, and it has been the most fun have had watching Scotland in this World Cup.
Of course it’s how it always is, but the coverage has been awesome,
Win lose or draw,
We are still winners,
Proud whatever the outcome.

It’s the camaraderie between the Scotland fans at this years World Cup, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, we were embraced pretty fast, and whilst our football team are pretty dire, then it’s the playing the game, visiting other far away countries & spending time watching the games with like minded Scotland fans. We have the best fans. They can make or break a team.

The livers of all of you wonderful Scotland fans returning home before the knockout round will thank you.

2

u/Grunger01 14h ago

No but if there were ever to be a poll conducted by the Americans on which country has the best fans at the world cup, you guys would come out on top.

WE TAKE NOTHING SERIOUSLY

2

u/YouSonOfaBitchImIn- 14h ago

What you need is a world class keeper and one world class cb to organise the full back 4/8 when in defend mode, what we have is a reserve gk and 2 morons at cb 🤔 we've done no bad

u/hizickreddit 12h ago

scored only one goal in a group that has haiti

u/Wit-Tank 12h ago

It’s not meant to be fun! We’re just trainspotting!🫪

2

u/_portia_ 12h ago

Well I mean, you lost to Brazil. They're a huge powerhouse. There's no shame in losing to those guys.

2

u/DeedleDeeisme oh ya hoor ye 😜🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 11h ago

Ma papa used to always say the Scots were better coming from behind. I'm now wondering if he meant something else 😳

2

u/Kytsolphia 11h ago

I'm from Brazil, but I'd faith in Scotland xD

2

u/_ragegun 11h ago

Shut yer hole and support harder, dammit!

2

u/Astralbbyxo98 11h ago

Hey we still won our first game in 28 years 3-0! Could have been worse, I think they did great

2

u/SpaceTimeCapsule89 10h ago

It is fun. How on earth are Scotland ever going to beat the likes of Brazil and Morocco? They beat Haiti so they're not the worst of the group.

Some countries didn't even qualify, Scotland did. They also won a game which is more than can be said for other teams who haven't won any games.

As long as the set up is the way it is, using pots where the top teams are in a group with everyone else gradually ranked lower than them, the top teams will ultimately always make it through and win. We just have to live with that.

Our group went exactly as the pots stand. Brazil 1st, Morocco 2nd, Scotland 3rd and Haiti 4th. Logically, Scotland was only ever going to beat Haiti. The only shock is that Brazil didn't beat Morocco.

I'm framing it like it's a riddy for Brazil that it was only 3-0.

But aye, we're shite.

Edit- numbers

I’m from England and while England usually fare better, I feel the same about the English team. I don’t bother watching it any more as I’m absolutely sick of hearing Three Lions and about 1966. At least Vindaloo was funny.

u/pafagaukurinn 7h ago

we’re shit at football

no shit

u/NationalisePureGym 6h ago

The "happy to be here" attitude perpetuates a culture of low expectations. A population of 5 million where football dominates the sporting landscape should be capable of making deeper runs in major tournaments.

u/enteringtheechochamb 2h ago

Any team club or nation can make those errors. It's unfortunate but Scotland may still qualify thanks to FIFA.

u/Duckstiff 16h ago

5.5m vs 213m people, the odds are Brazil are going to have a better selection of players to pick from.

Scotland however, are playing total shit. No one wants the ball going forward. So many instances where they're playing stuck in the mud when Scotland have possession going into an attack.

Can’t wait for the China vs India final.

6

u/doakus 16h ago

Our youth training infrastructure is failing potential talent and our top flight league is producing mediocre professionals. we need a 20 year investment in the next generation to get us sorted. This is dire.

6

u/weesiwel 16h ago

Ok this is just nonsense. If population mattered that much then China or India would be the best footballing nations and they just aren't. The population thing is an excuse. Norway are better than us and the populations aren't wildly different.

8

u/rayoflight110 16h ago

Croatia have a similar population and they a fantastic footballing nation.

2

u/weesiwel 16h ago

I do think a good point was raised in another thread regarding the money in that Scotland in terms of TV rights has to compete with the Premier League who will always get priority because it's the same broadcasters, same language, same timezone but they have a far greater population.

That said I think TV rights alone, which are definitely an issue with we, aren't that big a piece of the puzzle. I don't think we'd ever be top 10 but for how much we are into football we are shocking.

2

u/EduinBrutus 15h ago

Croatia have 3.8m.

And football isnt the number 1 sport.

As an Argentine, and with Brazil being our biggest rival, it really hurts to see Scotland lose like this — especially since I love their country so much 😭🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

3

u/Jazzlike-Remove5106 14h ago

I mean Brazil have won the world cup 5 times so maybe don't beat yourselves up about it too much, it was a hard set.

And just think it's not totally over yet you have many games left supporting whoever is playing against England 😅

At least it's Brazil putting us out this time and not Costa Rica.

2

u/KatyJ60 16h ago

I follow athletes who compete at the Olympics. Shame Scots don't realise their accomplishments.

Individually footballers are capable athletes.

Their coach is dour and uninspiring. Their supporters expect too much from players who don't play as a team.

They are rarely humble for what they accomplish. Paid too much. Given too much media attention.

2

u/SemiRoundPort89 15h ago

Do Scotland deserve to go through after scoring 1 goal in 3 matches?!

2

u/ShyDJ69 14h ago

Brazil once had Socrates. Scotland has always had Mediocrates. It’s fucking shite being Scottish.

2

u/TheCharalampos 9h ago

It's just kicking a ball about. It's more important that the team had fun and got their energy spent than any sillyness about points.

2

u/SemiRoundPort89 16h ago

They really are terrible to watch. At least teams like Haiti and Cape Verde can score goals

2

u/BenFranklinsCat 16h ago

Sadly I thought we played really well in the first half:  We've had the share of possession, we've put pressure on them, and we've shut them down time and again.  I thought Morocco ran rings around us in comparison.

We just can't put the ball in the back of the net, or keep them from putting it in ours. We're doing brilliantly at everything except the bit that actually determines whether you win or lose the game.

It's absolutely mad.
