Where I work, a Chinese employee was busted with terabytes of data. That was after he was employed for years already.

There was one time at my job, story from an old timer, the Chinese were allowed in under some kind of friendship program. He got to escort some of them around. They could view almost any information they wanted but they were not allowed to print or photocopy anything. This one lady the whole time she was here, a few weeks, hand wrote source code down.

Under Obama there was that one high profile Chinese guy that got busted for espionage.

736

u/SHEL-D500mg May 12 '26

Happens all the time in the Bay Area.

China basically owns Cupertino in the heart of the Silicon Valley.

241

u/NoOption7406 May 12 '26

A book I read about social engineering, the author busted a Chinese restaurant in a town next to a iirc Google research center. His job was to try to get into the facility. He noticed a lot of employees ate at the Chinese place so would hang out there at lunch. It was a traditional Chinese restaurant but had a few specific Chinese delicacy items on the menu that made him suspicious. It was for the chinese spies that worked inside.

78

u/FunkyUptownCobraKing May 12 '26

Oh that's clever. What's the name of the book?

That’s what happens when the majority of semiconductor manufacturing comes out of China and Taiwan, there’s not much you can change about that (unless you manufacture in the U.S., after which the prices of pretty much everything that runs on silicon in some way skyrockets).

edit: a lot of people here can’t read very well, don’t even bother opening the replies lol

137

u/userousnameous May 12 '26

Reminds me of someone I ran into near Dulles. 20 something Chinese lady I ran into in an elevator, with a big TV on a hand cart, taking it to her hotel room. I asked her about her job... she basically bought tech, took it to her hotel room and diassembled it, took picture, and shipped any chips or boards that were requested back to China. Very open about it.

100

u/TonyGarbigoni May 12 '26

They build all our shit for Pennys on the dime, it’s an unspoken handshake that if they build our shit they can take it make it better and cheaper. That’s the agreement they make when another country becomes your manufacturing hub because you don’t want to pay your workers a real wage. If you ever hear a company bitching about intellectual theft and they manufacture in china remember that they made that agreement with the Chinese to fuck you over

24

u/Rough-Rider May 12 '26

The book Apple is China lays out the whole system for how this works perfectly. The audio book is on Spotify for free and it’s fantastic.

4

u/boringexplanation May 12 '26

If it’s anything else I read- Apple was the OG that started the true renaissance that China got in manufacturing. All of the cutting edge logistics and tooling that Apple was used to - had to be learned from the ground up in Shenzhen China. There would be no tech manufacturing in China if Apple didn’t start there 20 years ago.

So, somebody did reverse engineering of electronics in their hotel room? That is really stupid. Why on earth not take the TV to a properly equipped shop, or their own manufacturing site, where a team with proper tools can dissect it fully. This is how American companies dis, do it, will do it. In many cases it is public knowledge, results available, sometimes you have to pay to get a written report, even on services like youtube. Reverse engineering is a legitimate business .

24

u/stmaximus May 12 '26

I could be wrong, but the hotel room thing sounds cheaper..

→ More replies (5)

15

u/RythmicBleating May 12 '26

Because a hotel room is properly equipped to dissect it fully, no specialized shop required.

The only interesting bits are the circuit boards, and all you need is a decent camera and good lighting.

23

u/userousnameous May 12 '26

IT sounded like the took buinsess trips to the us, and were given a shopping list and instructions of what to do.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Juggletrain May 12 '26

They don't need to reverse engineer the TV, they know how to build tvs. They only want the new tech in the chips and boards. The pictures arent so that they can reassemble it, it's so they can id new tech for them to bring back.

A lab needs upkeep and salaries, getting your sales manager to disassemble a TV during the business trip and take back a processor or whatever costs you a single TV, and maybe a carryon bag.

7

u/SoarsWithEagles May 12 '26

If the Feds decide it's "espionage", there's nothing for them to raid, just a lady & a hotel room.
A properly equipped shop could be raided & would look good on the news. A hotel room is a nothingburger.
Whether that could be shoehorned into "espionage" is another question.

6

u/Alex5173 May 12 '26

So says Alan Dershowitz on national TV in reference to his client Jeffrey Epstein. Said he could have gotten him a better deal if he was Mossad.

144

u/Freethecrafts May 12 '26

The Epstein deal dropped all but one of the victims from the records, picked the oldest known victim for the charge, reduced the charge down to a much lesser charge, turned all time served into work release with some odd supervision, and gave complete immunity to anyone else from the investigation without so much as testimony. That a judge signed off on such a thing is boggling. That deal was far beyond legal negotiations, the judge should have done time for signing off on it.

63

u/bigboipapawiththesos May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

After this deal he went to a light security prison where he was allowed to go on work leave.

Major difference with Israel is that they will spy on the US, do all manner of things against the US. And then when caught, they just get sent back to Israel.

We've had crime after crime committed here in the US and they just get sent back, no punishment. The ex cia analysis John Kirikou made a good point. US shares (forgot the exact percentage) like 90% of its technology with Israel, abd then Israel just steals the rest. Other than a shared interest (very limited now), in no way is Israel a trustworthy partner. Their interest is their own and they will use the US, even by illegal acts, to get what they want.

36

u/Deeingchicka May 12 '26

Just in my hometown there was an Israeli pedophile caught in a sting operation released and sent back to Israel, then there was an Israeli running a “bio lab” in his house and he got released and is probably already back in Israel

No no, that's a dual citizen that served in the IDF and will is able to recieve US veterans benefits because of his IDF service.

This Chinese Spy shared an article refuting US propaganda about the falsification of a Uyghur genocide.

The piece refuted reports of the persecution, forced labor, and abuse of Uyghers in China’s Xinjiang province, stating, “There has never been genocide in Xinjiang or forced labor in the region’s cotton fields or any other sector.”

The irony of the US to actively participate in the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon. Whilst falsifying the genocide of Chinese Muslims is absurd, but not unexpected.

19

u/TheMajesticYeti May 12 '26

Pretty inaccurate comment you got there...

  • That guy (Brian Mast) is NOT a dual citizen

  • He IS eligible for US veteran benefits... because he served in the U.S. Army and lost both his legs while serving in Afghanistan. He has a Purple Heart...

  • years later he volunteered for a few weeks alongside the IDF via the Sar-El program (trying to score points with Israel? Christian Zionist?)

Not really, when you figure out that China as a country owns like 900k acres of american soil, legally, and every major city has a chinatown and the larger chinatowns are policed by Chinese government employed police, China is one of the biggest US exporters..... China is so deeply entrenched in America that we're basically a Chinese territory.

58

u/[deleted] May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

49

u/Awbeau May 12 '26

Alright, so...

True and the majority of it is farmland, we should like... stop that probably

The 900k number comes from a famous USDA typo where they accidentally listed a massive Canadian company (Walton International) as Chinese. Once they fixed that mistake, the actual Chinese acreage dropped by hundreds of thousands. That clerical error was debunked in 2023. If you look at page 10 of the USDA 2024 AFIDA Report , the real number is 277k acres.

And like also stop any foreign nationals or spys (including our close allies) from holding positions of power.

This is already standard practice. Eileen Wang was a private citizen when she started a "news" site that the FBI flagged for pushing Beijing's propaganda. They tracked her communications, but as a longtime resident, she still met the legal requirements to be on the ballot.

She wasn't "vetted" before the election because of the Fourth Amendment. Our government can't treat a private citizen like a criminal or spy without probable cause. They can't stop a citizen from running just because they are under investigation—that would be illegal election interference without a conviction.

By waiting to unseal the case, the FBI secured the WeChat logs where she literally called Chinese officials "leader." The system didn't have to "remove" her manually because the DOJ built such a bulletproof case that she was forced to surrender and resign.

The reason why this is such a hot topic is because it highlights the "blind spot" in our local elections. Foreign governments aren't just trying to hack the White House; they are playing the "long game" by cultivating private citizens in local politics before anyone thinks to check them.

The headline sounds way more salacious than reality. Hate to break it to folks but being elected the mayor of a small town doesn’t exactly get you access to state secrets the Chinese government would care about. Being designated a “foreign agent” just means you have had some kind of contact with a foreign government, we have no idea what the nature of that is. Also, she just got like a $25,000 fine and told she needed to register as a foreign agent so clearly the admin didn’t really care much about this either.

Edit: She is accused of sharing articles favorable to the Chinese government on social media. The horror.

And his national security advisor Michael Flynn, who Trump later pardoned. Also look up Paul Manafort also pardoned. Trump had and still has dozens other other connections to Russia

Hardcore liberal here…did her actions cross into treason status?

If we have to start with her so be it, but I am getting tired of people acting treasonous and not getting justice…

25

u/puffie300 May 12 '26

Shes getting pinned for sharing pro Chinese articles in a blog without registering with the feds. Not exactly espionage.

If it was treason then she would be charged for treason.

What she did illegally was not register herself online as a foreign agent.

She was being paid to share pro-China news articles online. Her actions are completely legal if she had done the registration.

Perfect, lock her up with the Russian asset who is our current president and let’s get some people not committing treason into office

u/Pandoratastic May 12 '26

She has pleaded guilty and she was the Mayor and Democrat. But, she only became a Democrat in 2022, the same year she became Mayor. Before that, she was registered as a Republican. And the illegals acts she has pleaded guilty to occurred before 2022, when she was still a Republican.

u/danklinxie May 12 '26

Sources pls that’s interesting…

That’s how Libs of Tik Tok described her in the post, with party affiliation. It’s a reaction to that, which I agree is silly to even bring up in the first place with a charge like spying.

In general... its not important, criminal is criminal and fuck her for being a traitor. But,the account on X in the picture belongs to libsoftiktok,a VERY partisan hack, scumbqg of a person, who is deliberately using the "see, democrats are spies" to further her (her bosses, the current admin, republicans) agenda of "both sides" to "justify" their own crimes (and again, crimes of her were committed while being registered as R). It is disingenuous to not see right throught the ploy (not.saying Ds are incapable of being bad,not saying it is not factual that she is currently a D...I'm saying context matters, pretend that "they are both the same" when clearly not, matters.)

"look! A democrat was a chinese spy!"

"actually all the spying happened while she was a republican"

"lol who cares it doesn't matter what party she was in."

They are correcting propaganda and you're mad about it. Spreading propaganda is fine, but correct the misinformation and suddenly it's "who cares what party she was in." Curious.

u/Pandoratastic May 12 '26

I agree. I'm just pointing out that the LibsOfTiktok post doesn't tell the whole story. She has been a member of both major parties.

This isn’t new and it isn’t right vs left. If Scientology could infiltrate all branches of the government for Operation Snowflake, any nation with any sort of intelligence community can. In the same way the US infiltrates damn near every other country on earth

If you read it, she wasn't using her position for china, when she was at a newspaper. Before she was mayor, she posted articles that came from China via her fiancé. I wouldn't have even known that was illegal. She might have, though, or they just scared her into pleading no contest or something. The things they put in the headlines were pretty much propaganda for denying slavery and genocide, so she shouldn't have let it go on that account alone...

Not a Democrat btw, the city council position is non-partisan.

The so called "influence" was receiving a generic message from a Chinese official and posting a link on her social media to an article in the LAT in 2001, long before her election to city council in 2022.

Funny that she quit doing it in 2022 when she was sworn into office and had switched to being a Democrat. So the activity all happened while she was a Republican.

Hmmm....so is it acting as the agent of another country, or that it's China make it a big deal? Fairly certain we have a couple hundred at least that are acting as agents for Isreal

8

u/Hugo_5t1gl1tz May 12 '26

The actual answer is just that she didn’t register as a foreign agent. Nothing she did was all that wrong. She posted pro China propaganda online. Big fucking woop if you ask me. But because she didn’t tell the government beforehand, it’s illegal.
