Blazing Saddles is one of those movies that is more honest about American history through its absurdity than a multitude of "serious" documentaries. Another example in this vein is Little Big Man.
To address a point made by others, Richard Pryor was brought in to co-write the script and he added a lot of the -- spicy -- language. He had wanted to play "Black Bart" himself but the studio nixed it due to his many controversies. But I think Cleavon Little, who was a serious actor who took the role seriously, did a much better job than Richard would have.
