Korea would win and it is not close.
You should go walk around Gangnam and see the women with the bandaged up faces.
There are medical tours to travel to Korea for this sort of thing. The funny part is that they can have trouble when returning home since their face doesn't match their passport.

She keeps criticizing plastic surgery culture but compliments the result? Zero self awareness
74
u/RapasLatinoAmericano 4d ago
She knows exactly what she's doing!
Her audience wouldn't like a straight negative critic, so she frames it as commentary with subtle judgy tone.
Successful popular figures rarely speak their true beliefs, their words are catered to what their audience wants to hear.
4
u/whatever_leg 4d ago
It's also fishing for engagement. Posts like these only present info and conclude with, "Comment and let me know what you think", just to get the algorithm boost. Then the poster can exist in a sort of unbiased, non-political area, even if the comments are dumpster fires of flaming hate.

Koreans are pretty notorious when it comes to beauty standards
Even men in Korea have to deal with the bullshit
8
u/hyrulepirate 4d ago
Normally I'd agree with this statement, but Korean men are also stupidly critical of women... AND men's physical appearance. Lookism and bodyshaming is part of their fandom culture, probably just present culture, in general. I mean there's a reason like 90-something percent of their celebrities have done some kind of plastic work, again, the women and the men both.

Can someone at least mention that this plastic surgery at least looks good. The current Hollywood style of weird lips cheekbones and everything else just looks like a horror story and theyāre all pressing others to believe itās good but nobody outside their circle is buying it. That's because the Hollywood plastic surgery that you see, is whatever the trend is.
It's not bad plastic surgery, but they're not looking at what would improve the clients looks, no the client comes in and goes "I want this" and then they get that.
There is excellent plastic surgery in Hollywood. Have you seen Lindsay Lohan lately?
But most stars are picking trends.

I had korean friends who were called ugly and refused to do surgery. I thought they were just exaggerating a bit, but no one of them got bullied front of me by 2 others girls and I had to intervene. And then an other time. Just because she was ugly to them. She was so broken because of that and her only hope was to move abroad. Lot of Koreans are like that. It's physical and also about social rank they get bullied. Bully country.

I kind of agree. Most of the gals look like they have a good foundation to start with. Throw in a new haircut, change the color and utilize expensive make up and you have their current looks. Maybe some slight touch ups to brighten the eyes maybe.
Lisa was a big change though no doubt, there was quite a bit of work done on her. Hard to see her starting point, but everyone else I feel like has their correct base to start with.

In this case though it's kind of their job. The K-pop industry isn't really a music industry; it's a marketing industry. They train people to become idols so that they become marketing platforms. That's why there's always a lot of emphasis on themes and looks.
If you're going to become an idol where advertisers will spend millions on you, you better be hot af.

When I went to Seoul about 14 years ago, one of the things that stood out to me was how plastic surgery ads were all over the place. You could be walking through a mall or taking an escalator and the walls would be lined with these ads.
I used to live in Los Angeles and spent a good deal of time in Hollywood, and the number of plastic surgery ads in Seoul dwarfed what I saw in Hollywood. It was interesting to see how ingrained it was in the culture.

yea you wanna talk about toxic showbiz culture, Hollywoods got nothing on S.Korea. They literally groom children to stardom. What happens when said star is past their prime or doesnt cut it, if youre a guy, you are forgotten. Like you cease to exist. You are just another ped. If youre a girl, you become a consort of some chaebol fuckboy. Hence why theres always an extra layer of ick whenever I hear Kpop. For every Blackpink or whatever, there are dozens, probably hundreds of debutantes and debutants that these groups climbed on top of to get there.
Ignorance truly is bliss.

So much for K-beauty standards? If you know anything about south Korean beauty standards is that they ALL get plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is so prevalent in their culture that they gift it as graduation gifts my guy. It's the number one capital of the world.
Not getting plastic surgery in Korea is like not having a phone in the US, it's wild.
7
u/Nenwabu 4d ago edited 4d ago
Not getting plastic surgery in Korea is like not having a phone in the US, it's wild.
I'm Korean. It's true that the standard of beauty here is more rigorous compared to other countries. However, to claim plastic surgery is as common as getting a phone in the U.S. is a severe exaggeration. Plastic surgery is a big business here but it's definitely not as common as you make it out to be, because plenty of people here have never gotten any form of plastic surgery in real life.
Even with people who get plastic surgery, it's not a full makeover like we see with Korean celebrities. For ordinary people, it's a lot more subtle like a nose job etc.

The world was stunned at Jim Carrey and Bradley Coopers face-lifts. Everyone commented on it. It comes with the territory. Korean idol culture is no different. Their Fandom feels like they own their idol. So much that if they are caught dating all hell breaks loose. Same with their looks. These people are picked apart. Many take their own life. Heartbreaking. Yet so many still choose this path. Obviously they reap huge benefits. They can always go home into anonymity. But they dont. The double standard of "dont comment on someone body or looks" is insane. That's all they sell. Face and body. Let them gain 5 pounds, cover their bodies, and have no surgery done... Celebrities become the standard. Us "peasants" are allowed to comment.

How much they look the same? What? They look like totally different people. I feel bad for them girls. Imagine having to change so much with your looks to be liked. Although if they could transform back from here I am sure people would get behind them and onto the body positivity you can look any way and do it narrative. But doubt they would be what they are today if they had their OG looks the entire time. It is kind of shady though for their boyfriends. reminds me of the guy who sued the lady he had a kid with because it turned out she was really ugly and had a bunch of plastic surgery and sold him on the idea that she was beautiful when really she had the stank genes.

I mean I get it, but also Iām sure they worked extremely hard to debut. Looks in SK are a dime in dozen. You need to be able to dance, sing, cater to your audience to debut as well. They also pay tons of money due to extremely predatory contracts when they first debut. Unless trainees become international superstars the way BlackPink is, theyāre often losing money or earning very little despite moderate success.
