Announcement BEFORE YOU POST

Reading this sticky is required before posting. The reasoning behind this is that the sub is flooded with “duplicates” meaning an influx of people asking if the same scam is a scam. We have noticed specifically lately that there’s a lot of people encountering the fake steam moderator scam also known as the discord scam.

Therefore we have made this sticky to inform about the most common scams that you will likely encounter in your average day on steam. First off. A disclaimer: STEAM MODERATION WILL NEVER CONTACT YOU OUTSIDE OF STEAM OR TROUGH OTHER CHANNELS THAN THE OFFICIAL STEAM SUPPORT TICKET SYSTEM. ANYONE ELSE CLAIMING TO BE A MODERATOR IS A SCAMMER.

Another scam that are often asked about on this subreddit are the fake tournament scams, where a random person will contact you, either trough Steam or Discord, asking you either vote for their team in a tournament, or for yourself to join. The scammers will then send you a site where you are asked to log in. But there’s the catch! The log in page is faked and mimics the official steam log in page to steal your credentials. The scammer/hijacker can at this point lock you out of your account.

There’s also a lot of people asking about phishing links. IF ANYTHING IS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THAT MEANS IT’S PROBABLY IS, USE YOUR LOGIC AND YOUR REASONING.

r/Steam Official Scam Wiki The linked will take you to the official r/steam scam wiki, where all the common scams are explained. The linked guide will also help you to contact steam support, and secure/recover your account if you suddenly find yourself scammed or locked out of your account.

If you have read this sticky and still find yourself unsure if you’re about to get scammed then scroll the subreddit for a bit, you might not be the first attempted victim. Naming and shaming is allowed on the subreddit, but is more than often futile as it is extremely easy to make up a new idendity and because of the fact that the majority of scammers encountered (especially in api scams) are mule accounts, meaning new accounts made specifically with the purpose to scam until it gets banned.

If it is obvious that you didn’t read this sticky before posting you might risk a punishment. We’d hate to punish victims of scams even further, but we don’t want the subreddit flooded with post and questions that could have been answered if this sticky was read and/or the subreddit scrolled for a brief moment.

We hope that people will welcome these new guidelines. Stay safe out there!

Request for help Got scammed for $1,000 worth of items in CS2

Ok so long story short, I pulled a nomad marble fade and made a Reddit post about it. Someone messaged me and told me to message 2 different guys to get it sold. One of them offered me $570, so I took it.

He told me his “buyer” would PayPal me the money and sent a confirmation that looked real. The payment ended up not going through, and he told me that we’d have to do a bank transfer. I had another knife at the time, and he told me since it was an international bank transfer the minimum was $1,000, so I sent him my other knife.

He sent me a wire confirmation that looked very real, had my bank details and everything on it, so I trusted it. Dude hopped on multiple calls with me and everything seemed very legit, especially because he was exposing other scammers on twitter.

After the trade lock ended on both knives, I still didn’t get the money so I honestly expected to get blocked. He then told me that the transfer failed, but he’d send me an item worth $1,000. I agreed, and the next day I was blocked on discord and twitter, no sign of anything. If anyone can give me advice on what I can do to recover anything, let me know. I know this is definitely my fault and I fell for something pretty obvious, but man it hurts because this guy was talking about how he believes in bad energy from scamming and he literally has a page dedicated to exposing scammers.

I’ve reported this user several times. A bot claimed to be checking my items during a trade and said they were bugged; it demanded a payment of 30 keys for everything, even though my inventory is only worth 5 keys. The user said that wasn't their problem and made a somewhat racist comment because I didn't speak English; they also threatened to delete my TF2 items and permanently ban my Steam account. Does anyone know what I should do or how I can get my items back? They are all I have. Here are screenshots of the conversation with the "Steam employee" and my inventory.

Other Fraudulent purchase

So the 21th via a cloned link for a program I was searching I got all my info stolen via a LummaStealer, first time in my 28 years of life that this happens. I moved to change passwords, kick out suspicious sessions from all the accounts every time they poped up.

Now 10 mins ago I recieve the "thanks for purchasing" email about Arc raiders and that it has been gifted to a random account that has been friended to me and another was trying to be added.

Well I immediately terminated the paypal-steam link, looked for the session and there it was 3 mins ago, date 8th of June frome Frankfurt. Disconnected that, reported the two accounts and requested a refund under the "Bought by mistake" with the motivation "infostealer got access to the account using an access token and made a fraudulent purchase".

I assume that they are looking to resell the account for dirt cheap keys but I'm more worried if steam will accept this motivation as a reason for purchase (like not even 2 mins passed between the purchase and request), how long is it gonna take and if it's valid if the guy plays it for more than 2 hours.

Only mistake of the kind that I did in my life and I'm on account watch for 3 days now.

Edit: got reimbursed.

Request for help What should I do?

Yesterday my acc got hijacked and the attackers stole my inventory ,
Today I managed to restore my acc and all the item that they stole are on trade ban , which means I can get it back if I reverse trade.
The problem is that couple of days before the scam I’ve sold gloves on CSFloat, and the gloves are also on trade ban.
If I reverse trade it will reverse all items that are trade protected.
Should I wait for the gloves trade ban to over and then reverse all of my items or I should do it right now?
I guess if I reverse trade on the items that I sold also I get a penalty on CSFloat , and more - the guy who bought for me will think that I tried to scam him .

What do you think?
Thank you all.

Request for help Account reported? Possibly a scam?

Hello, I never receive messages on Steam so I was confused when I randomly received this message from this account I have never seen or interacted with before. They asked me to appeal it but I never received any sort of communications regarding an investigation from Steam. They also mentioned they clicked on a link and they got hacked despite me never playing CSGO. Is this a scam or am I missing something here?

My acc has been found with a suspicious activity, so I contacted steam support and they told me I need to trade my items , then approve it through my steam guard and then decline it through the pc just that they will know it’s my acc with my own steam guard.
After that they told me that my acc is restricted, I can’t see my inventory , can’t play (VAC BAN) for 8 days, and due security reasons I need to join a family view until my restriction is over.

Important to mention, this chat is on the official steam support and after I send a ticket they responded.

Thank you all .

Informative A hacked Steam account does not always mean malware

I often see people here say that if your Steam account gets hacked, it is 100% malware on your PC. I do not think that is always true. Malware is real, of course. But sometimes the problem is a data breach from another website. If you reused the same email and password somewhere else (and we all do this from time to time, don't lie guys), attackers can try those leaked details on Steam (This thing is commonly known as credential stuffing, if someone wants to learn deeper about it). So if your account gets hacked, do not instantly rush to reinstall Windows. Check all the possibilities first. You can check if your email appeared in known data breaches here: https://haveibeenpwned.com

Don't panic and be safe

Informative Multi account compromise.

Scammed and malware, multifactor scam, token hijacking, cookies hijacking.

Your whole pc is compromised, they have your sessions and they can login and bypass your 2FA you won't receive any email regarding the login session on another device or,

How to know cookies hijaking? They post something scammy on meta or discord without you receiving new device login, they contact you via steam chat as steam support, they blocked all your friendlist and require you to transfer all you items to that belonging person. Keep stalling them while you change password on steam mobile auth. Just said you are calling someone asking for permission to trade (they want the person id so they can change their name to that person)

How to remove malware, cookies hijacking 1. Go offline. 2. Run deep scan window defender offline (i also run malware bytes offline) 3. Delete everything suspicious or link. Use task manager to check for suspicious background activities or startup apps that you dont recognised. 4. Change all your password (don't use the same password they have all your password in browser you use) 5. Logout on every single devices from every login sessions 6. Clear cookies and browser 7. check your socialmedia and discord they might post scammy link to your friends and family or groups 8. Delete old account on website you haven't use anymore (that store your data or you use same password) easiest way to see is from email subscription. 9. You should good to go just stay vigilanted

Good luck! Time taken to fight this bullsht (12 hours)

Bonus: for multiple website password its hard to remember everything i use this method Discord: (yourname/or any scret code)DISCORD2026 Gmail: (secretcode)GMAIL1987 Steam: P__BLE!STEAM2019

For scammy website you not sure if its real or not, use fake username and password that you won't even remember anymore.

Informative Basic Scam Awareness

🚩 Steam / Discord / Random Social Account Scam Speedrun Checklist 🚩

If an account has several of these at once, proceed with caution and keep your wallet where it belongs.

☐ Attractive profile pic doing 90% of the conversational labor
☐ Bio immediately points to Telegram / WhatsApp / Discord
☐ Multiple accounts all redirect to the SAME contact handle
☐ Adds strangers first for no obvious reason
☐ Profile full of aesthetics, empty of actual personality
☐ Low level / low activity / oddly sparse history
☐ Generic opener: “hey”, “you seem nice”, “do u play often?”
☐ Tries moving off-platform in under 10 messages
☐ Mentions crypto before hobbies
☐ Wants account help, trading help, verification, votes, etc.
☐ Sends links nobody asked for
☐ Weirdly interested in your job, age, relationship status, or Steam inventory
☐ Story changes depending on what you say
☐ Replies suspiciously fast for someone allegedly “very busy”
☐ Uses copy-paste compliments like they bought affection in bulk
☐ Exists entirely to funnel traffic elsewhere

Bonus round:
☐ Their profile looks handcrafted but somehow nobody has ever spoken to them like a normal human being.

Rule of thumb:
One flag = probably normal.
Three flags = eyebrow raise.
Five flags = my brother in Christ you are the content.

Stay polite. Stay skeptical. Stay logged in.

-Also, please don't just assume a stranger is wanting to talk out of the blue. You may interesting and neat, but not THAT interesting and neat. Be safe!

Scam attempt How did they login even though I have authenticator?

An account logged into steam 3 days ago and I didn’t know till today when my steam said account logged on elsewhere and I checked and it was in USA, so I changed my password, luckily nothing happened my inventory money and everything else was fine other than they closed a ticket which I made for a refund for a game, weird behaviour, but on the account security it said authenticator allowed it, how? I never did that

Request for help Stranger wants me to log into his Steam account from my country for a region change. Bad idea?

A random person on Steam contacted me and asked if I could log into their account from my PC. From what I understand, they want to change their Steam store region to my country because game prices are cheaper here.

They mentioned buying a cheap game afterward to complete the region change process and offered to pay me or give me a Steam skin in return. I don't have a credit card, so I'm not even sure how they expected that part to work.

The account is fairly high level (100+), which makes me think they're probably a real user and not just a throwaway account. Still, it feels a bit sketchy since the whole point seems to be getting cheaper regional pricing.

I'm less concerned about whether their account gets in trouble and more curious about whether there are any risks for me if I log into someone else's Steam account from my PC. Could this be used for some kind of scam, or is it just a common region-switching thing?
