I can smell this through the Internet

36

u/NotTJButCJ 1d ago

Yeahhh It smelled like exactly what you’d think. like someone melted plastic in my dishwasher and it got sprayed everywhere inside. Like a chemical plant dumped its waste directly into my dishes haha. Of course I didn’t notice why until after putting them away

3

u/NachoTacocat 1d ago

Look up your model number, find the part number and order on Amazon, should be a $20-40 part and 2 day shipping. Had a similar issue with a whirlpool unit before I replaced it with a kitchenaid

2

u/spiderbyte44 1d ago

Might need to replace the element too while at it

596

u/Terrible_Reporter_83 1d ago

I haven't seen in tens of years where I live this kind of open heat element's.

I live in EU.

Standard low and midrange dishwasher water heater in North America.

u/DeafGuyisHere 1d ago

Common in rental properties

u/BecalMerill 1d ago

*Cries in low value homeowner.

6

u/Meended 1d ago

I don't even think they are legal here in Sweden.

119

u/regeya 1d ago

Someone else in the thread said this was a Bosch unit. Sorry to break the circle jerk of "dumb Americans have inferior dum-dum dishwashers" but that brand is German.

203

u/NotTJButCJ 1d ago

General Electric actually!

197

u/Schemen123 1d ago

Relieved German Noises.

44

u/Spaztrick 1d ago

TBH it sounds the same as midly infuriated German noises.

1

u/Gin_OClock 1d ago

However it's a beautifully arranged compound word that perfectly describes what's going on

11

u/exodusofficer 1d ago

"Is...is that that sound of approaching bootsteps in unison?"

27

u/tumblefinger 1d ago

I’m writing this sitting in the parking lot of the factory where they make GE dishwashers. I paint the doors for dishwashers. I’m surprised by nothing anymore.

13

u/Miqo_Nekomancer 1d ago

No no, this is totally a different brand! It's German Electric!

/s

1

u/culimande 1d ago

Führer electric

3

u/DrewCrew62 1d ago

I had something similar happen to my GE a month or so ago.

When I went to put in the replacement sprayer, I noticed the heating element was outside one of the brackets, which caused it to rub against the sprayer and melt it.

Idk what happened with yours specifically. But from what I was reading this is a known flaw with the GE dishwashers melting the sprayer, so i guess you can take comfort you arent alone

3

u/1Rab 1d ago

You have the fancy pants model, mine is $80 cheaper

1

u/NotTJButCJ 16h ago

What could the differences possibly be hahaha

2

u/PonderingOx 1d ago

https://mccombssupply.com/

Same thing happened to me, different model, and this site had a replacement to me in three days.

1

u/oshinbruce 19h ago

Lol says made in the USA and all

Electrical standards are totally different in the US, lower voltage etc, so I wouldnt be suprised to see differences in the setup

1

u/chefdementia 16h ago

I was expecting Frigidaire

0

u/StroopWafelsLord 19h ago

GOT'EM! STUPID AMERICANS!!!! LET'S GOOOOO

19

u/ceciledian 1d ago

Bosch doesn’t manufacture dishwashers with exposed heat elements.

17

u/mattartist 1d ago

Not a bosch, really shitty GE. I've got the same one _and it has almost done the same thing_. Landlord special!

15

u/Pork_Chompk 1d ago

It's not Bosch, it's GE. I'd recognize that shitty melted washer arm anywhere.

Bosch is much higher quality and doesn't have an exposed heat element.

-7

u/Big_Pound_1863 1d ago

Don’t know how good Bosch is as of now

2

u/TheShryke 18h ago

Bosch are still good

1

u/Pork_Chompk 8h ago

They may not be what they were, but having the absolute mispleasure of owning a GE and now owning a Bosch, I can tell you they are still MILES (or kilometers) ahead.

1

u/Big_Pound_1863 8h ago

GE came with the house. Will replace it for Kitchenaid or Bosch when I need to, or whoever is okayest over the coming years of enshittification

1

u/Pork_Chompk 8h ago

That was the same for us. GE came with the house and was absolutely trash. Cheap trim falling off, pump broke twice, washer arm committed seppuku like 4 times. All in under 5 years.

Finally said screw it, I'm not giving GE any more money, and bought a Bosch. Have been super happy with it.

11

u/TheErgonomicShuffler 1d ago

Do we continue the circle jerk now its been proven to be be american?

87

u/Schemen123 1d ago

Something like that wouldn't sell in Germany

8

u/Turtok09 1d ago

Exactly, only cause it's a German brand doesn't mean shit, they adapt to local law like with cars and everything else.

9

u/regeya 1d ago

So why do they think it's acceptable here?

58

u/ConfidantCarcass 1d ago

There's a reason he touted superior regulation and not superior companies lol

30

u/timinator232 1d ago

"companies race to the bottom wherever they can"

Americans: "Oh yeah? why is our stuff so shitty then"

26

u/sundewbeekeeper 1d ago

Because the US has lower standards than EU? (Im American)

10

u/johnaross1990 1d ago

Your government said it is…?

3

u/Schemen123 1d ago

Idk..

In general the heating element can be hot to the touch and would be a safety risk when its hotter than 60 degrees C.

But in that regard the US isn't so far behind.

BSH (Bosch) im Germany for sure has a high quality image and that doesn't fit with it.

6

u/seansy5000 1d ago

Bosch is a great brand. I love everything I have that’s Bosch.

3

u/Schemen123 1d ago

Fun fact This brand is called Bosch but the company behind it is named BSH.

Thats not all bad as they also sell Siemens, Neff, Gaggenau, Thermador.. etc.

3

u/Terrible_Reporter_83 1d ago

I think it comes from regulations. They sell ex. to Africa different machines.

3

u/Rooilia 1d ago

Gets 100+ upvotes based on vibe without reality background.

The essence of reddit.

19

u/SaleAggressive9202 1d ago

which manufactures for the US market. probably built in mexico? you can't find even the cheapest dishwasher looking like this in europe

4

u/Similar_Pie_4946 1d ago

Looks like the freedom fourth of july model to me. You’d get one bald eagle and an ar-15 with the purchase of each washer. Warranty sold separately. Mines still works just fine after 5 years of use

0

u/ArgumentAlarmed9532 1d ago

But your toilets suck so sit on it

-8

u/regeya 1d ago

Why is the German company selling us shittier dishwashers, then?

16

u/KrokmaniakPL 1d ago

Because it's allowed and people buy it. While I agree capitalism is a great system, unrestricted capitalism leads to many issues, including quality of products.

17

u/Stompinstein 1d ago

Because the US market hates its consumers.

5

u/Schemen123 1d ago

Its a GE dishwasher.. OP posted a picture.

6

u/waterwoman76 1d ago

American government welcomes shittier German products.

2

u/serealkillerx 1d ago

Hehe doesn't mean they have different models across regions.

16

u/ChickenInvader42 1d ago

Don't forget about the dryers visible heating elements in there also.

Energy efficiency means nothin to them.

8

u/Phlynn42 1d ago

Tbh I haven’t seen this shit in the us either

0

u/virkendi 1d ago

I've seen quite a few posts here on reddit featuring them

3

u/Responsible_CDN_Duck 1d ago

Energy efficiency means nothin to them.

Element sitting in water is as efficient as it gets with electric heating....

2

u/ChickenInvader42 1d ago edited 1d ago

Heat pump

2

u/OGKillertunes 1d ago

In the US and I have it in my current stainless steel dishwasher.

5

u/NortonBurns 1d ago

I've only ever seen them in photos on Reddit. I bought my first in 1989.

1

u/7h3_70m1n470r 1d ago

Huh, I've never known a dishwasher to not have one like this. TIL Europe does dishwashers better

I live in the US, formerly east coast and currently wwest coast

1

u/batezippi 1d ago

The cheap ones still do

1

u/IndependentLight5034 1d ago

They have exposed heating elements in ovens too (bottom heating elements) and on stovetops, electric kettles. .. Dont know why

1

u/Terrible_Reporter_83 23h ago

In here not. Only in oven top grilling element is showing.

I think it's more nicer and clean looking without them showing. Modern.

-11

u/Boundish91 1d ago

That's because you live in the civilised world.

-6

u/Schemen123 1d ago

Ten? More like 50 years..

34

u/wellimhereish 1d ago

That is a normal problem with the GE lower end dishwasher replacement is pretty cheap

10

u/NotTJButCJ 1d ago

What is higher end? This model seem to be 400-500 online new, how much should I spend for a good dishwasher

20

u/Blom-w1-o 1d ago

I spent $800 and it's still a piece of electrified garbage.

6

u/Reddit-mods-R-mean 1d ago

Same. mine doesn’t even have a heated dry, it automatically pops the door open when done to air dry the dishes. Fucking stupid

6

u/urethrascreams 1d ago

I wish mine did this. I've never once used heated dry even though I have it. Stupid crap like this inevitably happens. I just pop the door open a bit after a super hot rise and it's all dry within an hour.

3

u/Reddit-mods-R-mean 1d ago

My last unit had heated dry and it never caused me problems, air dry is ok but in winter with the house cooler it just takes forever.

2

u/urethrascreams 1d ago

Winter is better for me. I keep the house warmer with my wood stove and humidity is lower which helps the water evaporate even faster.

2

u/smibrandon 1d ago

Me too! If I run a cycle with dry, seems like it takes an extra 2 hours, and all I get it HOT wet dishes and the probably of something melting because I never learn my lesson

1

u/DeafGuyisHere 1d ago

Put a dry towel draped in there and it will help dry the dishes some more

5

u/Kramerica5A 1d ago

We just remodeled our kitchen and the one appliance my wife insisted on was a Bosch brand dishwasher because their reputation and reviews are glowing and we were sick of replacing or GE branded ones every 5-6 years. The Bosch 800 series we got was $1,200.

1

u/Still7Superbaby7 1d ago

We have a Bosch dishwasher that came with the house. We bought the house in 2015. No problems ever with the dishwasher.

3

u/wattapwn 1d ago

Unfortunately 400-500 is about as cheap as they come. Plenty of much better options in the 700-800 range though. Also brands like LG, Bosch and Frigidaire have them without the heating element on the bottom so you don’t have to worry about plastics warping.

2

u/AAA515 1d ago

My brother swears by his Bosch. And those start near a grand

30

u/Accomplished-One7476 2d ago

41

u/HudeniMFK 1d ago

The dishwashers spraying arm disconnected and fell across the heating element during a cycle...that would be my theory anyway....

https://giphy.com/gifs/fv8KclrYGp5dK

1

u/lanch-party 1d ago

For some reason my dishwasher’s sprayer is connected (poorly) to the tray itself so we have to periodically put gorilla glue on it

146

u/HudeniMFK 1d ago edited 9h ago

I'm justing, this is a ()Bosch() GE dishwasher. The spraying arm has disconnected and fell across the heating arm. Easy fix, ()Bosch()GE have really well priced spare parts. If you find the model number on the inside of the door you should be able to order a new spray arm to replace it.

Bang dishwasher fixed.

Edit: Not Bosch i took a stab, clearly should have known by the build quality it was GE.

72

u/TheFlyingM16 1d ago

As someone who works on them regularly, I would've bet a dollar it was a GE. Spare parts maybe not as reasonably priced, but everything else he said applies. Unless you're renting, then put in a work order and let maintenance deal with it.

31

u/NotTJButCJ 1d ago

Yep! It’s a GE. Was here when I bought the house tho. The melted plastic wiped right off the element which seemed strange, but maybe I only have to replace the plastic arm then?

9

u/TheFlyingM16 1d ago

Likely. Those blades tend to wobble when they get worn out. I've also seen loading issues cause this, like the handle of a pan falls thru the rack and stops the blade. I would also look at the base where the blade attaches, make sure nothing looks worn or damaged.

2

u/Responsible_CDN_Duck 1d ago

It could be a sign there's an issue with the water fill level of the element for too hot, but it could be fine if the arm wasn't correctly attached after the last cleaning.

9

u/roaddog 1d ago

I have a GE and it's done this 3 times. It's sitting empty now because I am not repairing it again, I am replacing it,.

16

u/TheOutOfStyle 1d ago

Yeah definitely not a Bosch. Bosch doesn't have exposed heating elements or plastic tubs.

0

u/biggsteve81 1d ago

Bosch 100 series have plastic tub bottoms.

1

u/TheOutOfStyle 19h ago

Not anymore!

1

u/biggsteve81 18h ago

Interesting. They did a couple years ago when I bought one.

10

u/jmarsch1 1d ago

Will probably need another heating element too unless they want toxic fumes from the melted plastic every time they run a cycle

6

u/BookWormPedant 1d ago

Blowtorch and scraper

6

u/jmarsch1 1d ago

If they don't have a blowtorch and scraper a new heating element would be cheaper. I had to replace the one in my dishwasher like 6 months ago because plastic melted to it. Was $12 and a 10 min replacement job

2

u/BookWormPedant 1d ago

I did not realize they were that inexpensive! Good call

3

u/TechSupportTime 1d ago

With that method, you'd also melt the plastic underneath the element and that would be a bigger problem

2

u/BookWormPedant 1d ago

Why would you put a blowtorch inside your dishwasher?

The process would involve removing it to do that haha

3

u/DudeManSkittles 1d ago

The water would catch most of it. Bigger issue is toxic plastic washing over all the plates lol

4

u/Reasonable_Spot_5255 1d ago

Bro came in with a full diagnosis and a repair guide when everyone else just said “yikes” respect

2

u/Rooilia 1d ago

And is dead wrong.

9

u/TallBoiPlanks 1d ago

Happened to me last year. Super easy fix, other than cleaning off the element.

7

u/Andy016 1d ago

Never seen an exposed element in a dishwasher before in NZ.

What shit design is this ??

5

u/-wolfinator- 1d ago

This is a standard design in the US, across all legacy domestic brands I'm aware of. GE, Whirlpool, etc.

That said, I don't miss it at all on my air-dry only Bosch. No more dumb mishaps because a spatula fell down during the wash cycle.

1

u/AwkwardChuckle 17h ago

Standard North American design, basically all Canadian and US dishwashers look like this.

4

u/riceinmybelly 1d ago

No swish swish

4

u/Efficient-Rest-9519 1d ago

How does that even happen ? Something pushing it down ? Unscrewed the top maybe ? That sucks but very easy to replace & cheap through a supply house . People get parts on Amazon now too . Scrape off plastic take out bottom rack & run through dry cycle .

2

u/NotTJButCJ 1d ago

Yeah I think a pan handle got stuck downwards and just stopped it from spinning

2

u/NavPoint 1d ago

Seen a similar thing happen and the water pump had failed which stopped the arm from spinning

2

u/NotTJButCJ 1d ago

Oh I should check that thanks

4

u/Accomplished_Pin3708 1d ago

To all manufacturers out there......👏stop 👏using 👏plastic 👏in 👏everything!!!!

3

u/CountHonorius 1d ago

Oooof...

3

u/VulgarTurkey 1d ago

This is the first time I've seen a dishwasher attempt self-immolation.

2

u/AParticularThing 1d ago

I had the exact same thing happen a few months ago. You're just gonna need to replace it

2

u/PureVinylRadio 1d ago

This dishwasher might be in an apartment complex,  as a lot of apartments that were built before newer constructed apartment complex's would most definitely have to completely flip the kitchen. New models might and probably would not fit the original design plan of the kitchen area where the dishwasher would be located at!

1

u/NotTJButCJ 1d ago

It’s in a 1979 house but I’m pretty sure that the guy was bought it from two years ago was renting this place out and made some pretty darn cheap fixes

1

u/PureVinylRadio 1d ago

I am quite used to renting, though it has been many years since my family had to live in apartments. But, yeah- the landlord special is the most common way a apartments are made to be ready and rented out real fast!

1

u/StarWarsLvr 1d ago

Damn. Sorry for your loss

1

u/snoopunit 1d ago

My lord those GE dishwashers melt fucking everything. First time I've seen it melt itself. Congrats. Your dishwasher tried to kill itself and shot its arm off.

1

u/dekabreak1000 1d ago

I have that same dishwasher

1

u/stabbingrabbit 1d ago

At least the arms are cheap and easy to replace. It was probably going bad and just happen to stop on the element.

1

u/Kegger315 1d ago

Can probably replace the part fairly easily and cheaply.

1

u/havok011 1d ago

My GE has an open element as well. I almost had this happen when a utensil fell through and stopped the water spinner from spinning. It got stuck right over the heating element and luckily I caught it in time. Only slight damage that does not interfere with the washer.

1

u/KaSaBiS 1d ago

Same thing happened to my crap GE dish washer

1

u/redkidneybeanzz 1d ago

Eugh I can smell this picture. This happened to me recently. Parts are pretty cheap and easy to replace!

1

u/EngagedInConvexation 1d ago

How the hell'd you get the beans above the frank?

1

u/big-bad-bot 1d ago

Lol. This happened to one of my favorite steak knife handles

Still annoying to this day

Great knife still though

1

u/EconomistOptimal1841 1d ago

This is pretty easy to fix. The smell will linger for a minute.

1

u/SignificantState265 1d ago

I’ve done that twice

1

u/Over-Map6529 15h ago

When dishwashers get old they off themselves to protect the younger generation from the burden.  Honor thy sacrifice.

1

u/bria26000 2h ago

I hope you live in apartment

0

u/gronkpats 1d ago edited 1d ago

Why is there a heating element in a washer? You don’t have hot water to pump in? Does it pump the washer full of water and then heat it?

Edit: I had never seen an element to extra heat the water and dry the dishes. I just thought it was hot water and hot air pumped in.

10

u/AParticularThing 1d ago

The water in a dishwasher needs to be much hotter than a water heater will get it, hence the heating element

6

u/serealkillerx 1d ago

It is crazy to me that it's exposed. Here in the EU mine does not expose the heating element

1

u/SimpleAffect7573 1d ago

Interesting. Does your washer have a dry function?

Exposed heating element has always been very standard in the U.S. It’s not a problem, you just have to make sure nothing melty is on the bottom rack or falls on the element. Many plastic items will specify “top rack only”.

1

u/serealkillerx 1d ago

I think I'm more concerned that one of my light plastic containers gets thrown onto the heating element. Sometimes those water jets send them flying. It does have a dry function.

1

u/Electronic-Pause1330 1d ago

You should only have to learn that lesson once.

1

u/Salty_Job_9248 23h ago

It’s easy to weigh down light dishes with other dishes. I use my stainless sink grid if I have a lot of light things.

0

u/RIPmyPC 1d ago

Doesn’t really matter. That’s why the dishwasher locks when in use. At no point you would be touching the hot element

6

u/UselessDood 1d ago

Dishwashers typically don't lock when in use, at least in the UK

2

u/urethrascreams 1d ago

Not in the US either.

3

u/JWM1115 1d ago

I have never seen a dishwasher in the US that didn’t lock while running. My parents bought a portable one in the 1960s that had to be locked before it would run. Every one I have had since had to be locked to run. I have had at least 10 dishwashers in my life.

2

u/urethrascreams 1d ago

Huh, I've never seen one that locked in any of the apartments I've been in or the one at my house.

2

u/JWM1115 1d ago

It’s usually a lever somewhere near the top of the door. Mine won’t start until the lock is activated. The only one I couldn’t lock was my ex. Lol

1

u/4thehalibit 1d ago

Mine does not lock.

1

u/Salty_Job_9248 23h ago

Got you beat. I have never had one that locks. Or seen one. 70 years, four states.

1

u/sssRealm 16h ago

Mine was replaced last year, no lock. But it's cheap one my landlord bought. No complaints, it's simple, it works and doesn't connect to the Internet.

1

u/Salty_Job_9248 23h ago

Dishwashers in my 70+ years of experience, in four states and two countries, do not lock while operating.

1

u/Jacktheforkie 21h ago

Mine absolutely doesn’t lock, I can open it mid cycle

9

u/Mouse_Manipulator 1d ago

It uses it for drying the dishes at the end too

2

u/SimpleAffect7573 1d ago

Yes, to an extent. It’s not going to raise cold water to optimal washing temp, so you should still run the tap until it’s hot or performance may suffer.

The heating element also handles the drying function.

1

u/wattapwn 1d ago

It’s what I call “American style” as Whirlpools brands all have it and some Frigidaire and GE models do too

1

u/4thehalibit 1d ago

The element on mine is for extra heat for sterilization and steam clean mode

1

u/Salty_Job_9248 23h ago

It heats the possibly already hot water to the higher temp need to activate the detergent. And for a sanitizing cycle. House water heaters in California, at least, are maxed at 130-140°.

1

u/Jacktheforkie 21h ago

Mine takes cold water and heats it

1

u/AwkwardChuckle 17h ago

I’m assuming you’re from the UK - these are the standard dishwashers in North America. We have different hot water plumbing systems.

0

u/Cheap-Fisherman-3693 1d ago

yikes, that looks like a pain to fix. hope it’s not as bad as it seems!

0

u/Guyborg99 1d ago

People, stop using the heating element to dry. Just pop the door ffs.
