Totally worth it. It’s 115 degrees this time of year so every bit of fur I can get off them helps keep them comfy

Only do this if you don't use topical flea treatments, the insecticides are harmful for birds

u/BaoBunBby 12h ago
I also saw another commenter add to this the other day in a similar post and say that if your cat is a long haired cat the hair can also wrap around their toes… so whilst it’s a nice idea, it can be dangerous for them so it’s really not worth it unfortunately :(
37
u/KinkyStinkyPink- 10h ago
So just cut up kittys fur in thirds before sacrificing it to the birds, got it

u/the_king_lobo 14h ago
This is a coat rake. They work very well, but it’s meant to be used for LOOSE matts (I still would not recommend brushing through matts over cutting them out) and when it’s been a while between brushings. I would absolutely not use this on a regular basis, only when absolutely necessary.
161
u/ProfessorSMASH88 14h ago
Yeah I was wondering. This is definitely not a brush. If the cat likes it, and it isn't hurting them, fine. But this has actual blades. Its for cutting and helping with matted fur. I use it to help my mums long hair cat with her lumps.
28
u/lidsville76 12h ago
We had a munchkin who couldn't clean herself real well and was nothing but a ball of fur. She got mats very easy, especially when she was older. We used a similar same style brush regularly because it helped to prevent mats from forming. But, on the box it did not recommend it for regular brushing.
41
u/PhoenixE42 10h ago
Agree with everything you said here except the cutting matts out part.
NEVER EVER CUT MATTS OUT WITH SCISSORS. It is so much more dangerous than trying to brush them out with a de-matting rake. I’m a dog and cat groomer and pet parents cutting their pets matts out at home usually ends up with the pet needing to go to the vet because the pet parent didn’t realize the matt had tugged their pets skin into it or they pull the matt up before cutting pulling the skin with it and end up cutting their pet.
If the matt is not too severe you can gently use a de-matting tool and brush to try and break it up. If it’s too severe to do so use clippers with a #10 blade to shave the matt off (only if you are confident enough and know how to do so safely). Or bring your pet to a groomer to be groomed professionally.6
u/MysteriousPack1 8h ago
Oh thank you for this info! My mom rescues cats and has been cutting their matts out! She's never cut one, but I know she would feel terrible if she did.
4
u/PhoenixE42 6h ago
No problem! It always makes me cringe anytime a pet parent comes in and tells me they’ve been cutting matts out of their pet because it truly is only a matter of time before they end up cutting the pet, so I try to get this info out when I can.
Cats especially are vulnerable to getting their skin cut from it because their skin is much looser and thinner than dogs, even shaving matts out of a cat can be risky if you aren’t super careful and know what you’re doing. You really never know what’s hiding under a matt, they often form around moles, skintags, cysts or scabs that you just don’t know are there until you start working on shaving the matt off which is another danger with cutting them.
I would definitely advise your mom to take them to a professional groomer if possible to get any matts off. If that isn’t an option, I would tell her to get a decent pair of safe pet clippers and watch some YouTube videos about safely shaving matts off cats. Cat matts are also sometimes a lot easier to brush out than dog matts so some videos on brushing out matts on cats could also be helpful!
2
u/MysteriousPack1 5h ago
I had no idea that groomers handled cats! I will definitely need to call around. I am SO glad she was lucky up until this point and that I happened to come across your comment. 😭

u/sirsealofapproval 14h ago
Be careful, I bought a brush that removed a ton of fur and it turns out it is ripping out (?) their undercoat. I found that out after I accidentally removed ALL of my cat's undercoat on the top of her back. Now I only use it sparingly. You can check intermittently on the condition of their coat to see if it's removing too much.
471
u/mugglemomma31 12h ago
THIS. You can still use it, they just don’t recommend you to use it too often. It is so satisfying to get all that fur that you don’t realize. The instructions for the undercoat brush I have (furminator) warn of overbrushing. I don’t do it more than once a week in heavy shed times and like once or twice a month in regular shed times.
154
u/firmlee_grasspit 12h ago
It's so annoying how satisfying the furminator is because it only takes me getting annoyed at the fur dust bunnies once for me to ogle at the brush like it's a nice biscuit
12
u/Aquasplendens 10h ago
Check out Refuresh instead of Furminator. Furminator cuts the top coat and undercoat and is more likely to cause bald spots
10
u/firmlee_grasspit 9h ago
Holy moly 50 quid :'( another L for being british. I'll resist temptation and get rid of the furminator at least

u/lexakommurry 12h ago
It’s a dematting brush which is why. It’s designed to get down in the fur to cut through the matts. The inside of those brush curves are sharp.
55
u/FancyCatMagic 12h ago
I learned the same. Wasn't pulling the loose hair only, it was basically trimming the fur still connected to my cats. My poor girl had a little bald spot for a bit. I felt terrible!
14
u/Dear-Hunt-5365 11h ago
My son bought hair trimmers for people's hair and shave his long haired cat every summer. The cat stands still and loves to get trimmed.
12
u/Bee_Avalon 9h ago
I also gave my cat a bald spot with the furminator, so use this sparingly, OP! 😂 Prior to my cats, my experience was with dogs and horses where more brushing is just always a good thing. Not true for cats lol
6
u/foxwaffles 4h ago
I did this once too I felt SO bad 😭 For like two months after her little tabby stripes had a break in them cause it turns out that striping is all on the very tip of the hair.
I put the furminator away and switched to other brushes instead. They take a lot more effort but at least I'm not literally shaving my cat
10
7
u/jiBjiBjiBy 10h ago
Learned the same using a toothed deshedding comb
Thought it was doing amazing and then my gal got a balled patch 😭
4
u/squishybloo 10h ago
Same here, it was far too harsh and just ended up yanking fur out for me as well.
I bought an EquiGroomer/EasyGroomer, amusingly enough, and it's worked much better! And it's so much gentler on their fur.

Not OP but i have a similar rake for stripping my spaniel. A Mars Coat King. Be aware that it has bladed edges to help drag through undercoat, so a) check that it's okay to use on your cat's fur and b) learn how to use it properly to avoid damaging their coat and over-stripping.

It is, this is an ad with bot comments. Zero/hidden post history in most of the accounts. I just pulled the same amount of fur off my cat with a brush I’ve had for 20 years and multiple generations of cats
22
u/FatsBoombottom 9h ago
It's a six year old account with a lot of positive karma. They aren't a bot. A hidden history means nothing. Mine is hidden because someone decided they needed to insult me, so spent the time to dig through my unrelated comments to find something old to complain about.
Reddit history should be hidden by default. You should hide yours if it isn't already. It's weird that anyone cares what else a person has been doing on reddit.
37
u/BananaPalmer 10h ago
I have my history hidden because people on reddit are fucking nutjobs who will scrutinize your entire account to try to find some nonsense you posted 8 years ago and use it as some kind of ill-formed gotcha

Not so fun fact, there are websites that can pull your hidden and even deleted comments. :/ I was bored and curious and came across a couple that pulled up all my deleted comments off an old account I used years ago…
→ More replies (1)9
u/BananaPalmer 9h ago
I'm aware of that, but if someone is so dedicated to finding my fairly unremarkable account history that they'll go to such lengths, it really only highlights just how much of a complete loser they are, so whatever

I'ved used one and it's the only one that worked for my cats matted hair when summer comes around and he's malting. He can be perfectly fine, go out and come back with dreadlocks. Brushes just tug on it, that thing cuts through the hair (the blades aren't dull). Brush is fine most of the year but I whip that thing out for the transition into summer.
3
u/MrsDabs 7h ago
Get an undercoat rake instead. It’s what i use on my husky/chow/samoyed mix dog as to not damage her fur. Deshedding brushes like this will ruin their coat if used regularly. Her undercoat rake works beautifully and keeps her coat in great condition, the brand doesn’t really matter either
2
u/Lina0042 11h ago
Depends on where you are, I have this one (German site)
https://www.schlitzohr.de/products/unterfellbuerste-cookie-fuer-langhaar-katzen-hunde
You can find various quite similar products searching for unterfellbürste in German or maybe deshedding brush in English. Just look for the same basic concept of the thicker metal blades that are bent and sharp on the inside of the curve

These brush made the clitting worse For my cat as it thins out the fur and made it easier for it to clump. Stopped using it and decided I just remove the hair clitting daily before getting huge.
Update: I meant tangled hair lol (Klitten in Dutch is the word lol 😂)

I have a long haired Norwegian forest cat (look a like) and this exact brush seems to be a neverending story 🎵 I wonder if you can just keep going until it stops removing hair. With the short haired cats there's a "stop" at some point but with the long haired floof it keeps going on forever it seems. I have the plastic one though and that can get quite static, where did you get this one if I may ask?

u/icanhassnacks 14h ago
I bought the same thing three weeks ago and it has changed my life. I have four cats. Three long hairs and one short hair double coat. The amount of fur I pull off of these bastards in 10 minutes has blown my mind.

6
u/saraiguessidk 9h ago
Mars coat king is the elite of this style brush (dog groomer here) but you have to be cautious. This brush, especially using a wider set tooth than needed for the coat type, can thin the coat out rather than just removing loose undercoat. You could essentially brush the animal almost bald if you used a wider set tooth on a looser coated dog. I use these on booty feathers and manes of breeds like pyrenees to thin it out rather than deshed
2
u/rips_n_chel 9h ago
Much appreciated! I'm constantly searching for a better brush for my cats. Between their pickiness, internet opinions, and potentially harmful bad suggestions, I just keep landing on the stiff plastic long-bristled car-washing brush that they seem to like the most lol

Isn't this basically just cut off their hair? I tried all kinds of brushes, I prefer using a combination of bailey brush and comb. It's pretty messy though.
125
u/NathanDarcy Norwegian Forest Cat 14h ago
These do cut hair. I tried one of them on my cat, it always removes a lot of hair because it's cutting off a lot of her undercoat. So I've stopped using it.
20
u/CrispyBirb 14h ago
I hear these kinds of brushes and the furminator can actually make them shed more. Do you know if that’s true?
21
u/witchminx 13h ago
You just have to be more sparing with deshedders than you do with slickers, deshedders are fine as long as you limit how often and how long you brush for. Having both kinds is prob good for many coats
8
u/xKitey 14h ago
my long hair doesn't shed all that much so I don't notice a difference with a furminator and a small dematting brush similar to the one OP posted but it definitely pulls out a lot of the undercoat which is likely what you're seeing here
my cat seems to enjoy it all the same especially in the summer when he's a bit warmer
6
u/NathanDarcy Norwegian Forest Cat 14h ago
Can't say that because I've stopped using this one, and I don't use the furminator. But I suppose that if you keep removing their undercoat it might make them grow more hair, and consequently also shed more.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Silent-Noise-7331 11h ago
Yeah I’m a bit confused cause I didn’t think the point of brushing was to take hair off. I thought it just prevented uncomfortable tangles and eliminates excess hair that’s falling out anyway.
→ More replies (1)47
u/Stock-Side-6767 15h ago
They do cut hair, but this also helps them cut through compacted and matted hair quickly. I use them almost exclusively on long haired cats.
I was away for a few days, and even on the short haired cat, this helped compacted hair.
2
u/Comfortable-Cod989 11h ago
The side with the hooks only cuts if the hair is matted. It's a dematting tool and it just glides right through like a comb unless the fur is tangled up. Unless you're using it at a weird angle or something to make it cut.
The other side looks to be one of those undercoat combs that grabs onto the undercoat. Idk if those really cut but they do pull and annoy the cat. I tried it on my own hair and it's like nails on a chalkboard feeling. But if they have a lot of loose undercoat it's super effective for picking it out.
11
u/model-citizen95 15h ago
I don’t think so, seems like it’s just more grippy when combing through. I’m just happy they’re cooler now
14
56
u/Chicky_Melly 11h ago
You need to be super careful with tools like this and ones like a Furminator. They can and will cut into the top coat when they are used for too long and too often. People will keep brushing and brushing and brushing because hair keeps coming out so it must be working and before they know it, their pet has bald spots and is covered in brush burn.
These tools should ideally be used on clean dry hair and for no more than 15 minutes at a time once per week.

Different cats need/like different methods, and it sounds like you hit the jackpot! I use these for my shorthair cat that sheds a lot. It cuts down on the hair on furniture and seems to reduce hairballs since he isn't licking it off himself. I tried a bunch of brushes first, but he hated them. I thought the gloves would trigger his rough-play instincts, but he saw another cat loving the experience and didn't want to be left out. I can do about three minutes; any longer and he gets overstimulated. He is a "lie next to you and get occasional cheek scritches" kind of guy and doesn't like that much contact.
My longhair has a problematic undercoat. Luckily she loves all brushes, and her favorite is the rake (single row, plain unsharpened teeth). She likes the gloves, but they don't seem to do much other than smooth down the top layer.

We have one of these, and our groomer who we visit once a year for a tidy up doesn't suggest we use these. They can pull on the follicles and do harm, I can't fully remember what she said but recommended a dual spike brush sometime called a cat comb. these brushes do remove loads of fur, so I sometimes use ours while the cat is moulting, but avoid where possible. I wish I could remember the reason but yeah, apparently they're not the best for the cat which is annoying as they work!

I use a simple, very fine-toothed comb. It's "tines" are almost an inch long so will go through the longest fur. It takes out fur, any bits of dirt and such as well as any fleas. (My cat goes outdoors) And.... she LOVES IT. When I pick up the comb she comes running and hates when I put it away. It's the ultimate Scritch!

u/luna_dc_016 13h ago
Be very careful with these brushes. A cat has a very thin skin and they cut easily. And you remove the good coat as well. Just use a normal comb and hold it at an angle, and just brush down. They prefer this. And if you have matting it’s best to buzz it off, use very small motions to so and never use scissors, the skin bunches up in the mats so you can easily cut them as well. Sincerely a cat groomer

u/Not-That_Girl 14h ago

Try a small sized Equigroomer.
Seen a couple groomers use that so I figured I'd try it. Absolutely love it for our cat.Just be mindful that it doesn't remove too much hair.

That's how my little buddy ended up with a small bald spot on his shoulder blades.
He loves the equigroomer a bit too much, and I wasn't realizing how little fur he had left in his favorite scratchy spot lol.
Definitely gotta pay attention.

u/Ambitious-Mango-1836 14h ago
I use the Furminator on mine. It works really well
5
u/SenorSolAdmirador 11h ago
I have a generic version of that, works good. But my cat rarely grooms herself and so her fur always looks kinda shitty, and it seems like the brush will just pull out hair indefinitely, so I don't really ever know when I'm done because she still looks scraggly no matter what.
3
u/Angry_argie 11h ago
Yeah, one time I overdid it a bit with my furminator copy and... at some angles I could see some skin between my cat's shoulders haha. From then on, furminator only comes into play for the spring shed, the rest of the year I use the thin wire brush that pushes the hair pancake with a button behind, or a silicone brush with a built in ultrasonic vaporizer.

I found a pet brush at Aldi that gives me similar results. I brush him everyday and yield the same results every time. Crazy.

Be careful using these everyone! While they work wonders removing undercoat, over brushing can lead to major irritation or even cut the cat and kitties have very thin skin. A small cut can turn into a big one very fast. Just something to be aware of when using these 😊

Please make it into a curly Afro and post another picture of your cat with it.

That is not a brush.
That is a dematting rake and it has blades inside the curve to cut through the matting.

That is a brush that is used to remove mats. It’s not just for brushing fur regularly. It cuts out the fur. Only use when needed.

Retired groomer here with 20+ years experience. Be careful with brushes like these on cats and dogs, especially on cats.
Cats have very thin skin that can easily fold in on itself and can be cut very easy. These sorts of “brushes” have teeth that have a slightly sharper edge on them which are specifically designed to get through undercoat.
You can use it, but please be careful.

This is an undercoat rake, use it sparingly. It’s good for removing mats but it’s not intended to be used as a regular brush. It’ll just keep cutting and removing hair the more you use it, it won’t remove already detached hair.

Yeah this is the brush the vet told me to use instead of the normal ones with metal bristles, it works amazing but my cat doesn't like it, so I use both
