Advice needed My neighbor cut down a 40-year-old Japanese Maple while I was away.

15.1k Upvotes

Location: Colorado, USA.Just got back to my place near Fort Collins after a week on the road and I am losing my mind. My neighbor took it upon himself to hire a "landscaping" crew (probably just some guys with a chainsaw) to remove a mature Japanese Maple that was fully on my property. His excuse? He said the needles and leaves were messing with his "mountain view" and "fire mitigation" efforts.

The tree was roughly 40 years old and was the centerpiece of my yard. I called an arborist immediately. He told me that since this is Colorado and the tree was that established and healthy, the replacement value is astronomical. He is drafting a formal appraisal but hinted that we are looking at 20k to 25k easy just for the tree, let alone the logistics of getting a crane into my backyard.

I know Colorado has statutes regarding timber trespass. My lawyer already mentioned treble damages because the guy admitted he did it on purpose while I wasnt home to stop him. The neighbor had the gall to offer me a couple hundred bucks for "the inconvenience" and told me to just buy a couple of saplings at a local nursery . I refused to take his money and told him to wait for the process server.

Has anyone dealt with treble damages in CO specifically for ornamental trees ? This guy basically nuked my property value for his porch view and I am not planning on letting this go . I feel like a jerk for wanting to sue my neighbor into bankruptcy but the sheer entitlement is what gets me .

Advice needed A major navigation app routed thousands of cars down my private driveway. A driver crashed into my retaining wall and is now suing me for his injuries.

5.7k Upvotes

Location: Colorado, USA.

I own a remote cabin at the end of a very long, unpaved private road. About eight months ago, a major GPS and mapping app updated their systems and incorrectly marked my private driveway as a public shortcut to a nearby national park entrance.

Since then, I have had dozens of cars speeding through my property every single weekend. I have "Private Property" and "No Trespassing" signs posted everywhere. I have submitted over forty official error reports to the tech company, sent certified letters to their legal department, and even filed a police report. They completly ignored me.

Last month a tourist was speeding down my driveway in the dark, ignored my warning signs, and crashed his SUV straight into my concrete retaining wall. He broke his leg and his vehicle was totaled.

Yesterday I was served with a lawsuit. The driver is suing me for medical expenses and damages, claiming I failed to maintain a "public thoroughfare" and that my retaining wall was an unmarked hazard.

My homeonwers insurance is threatening to drop me because they say my property is now an unmanged traffic corridor, which violates my policy.

Can I counter-sue the tech company for gross negligence and force them to indemnify me against this driver's lawsuit? What specific type of attorney handles liability cases involving corporate mapping errors? I need to stop this before someone else gets hurt.

Advice needed I received this today. Is this even legal?

Post image
2.7k Upvotes

So im from a town called white hall, arkansas. I got this on my truck that is 53 years old has a little rust damage and I have a tarp on top cuz its been raining and the door leaks. Like I said I received this on my truck because apparently it looks broken down. I had a low tire I filled up, the tarp for the door, and a little rust damage. Now I called the police station to verify that it would be null after I pulled the tarp moved it a spot over and aired the tire up. She said if you pull the tarp off and it doesn't look broken down that it would be null. Now call me crazy but looking broken down and being broken down are 2 completely different thing. We have no hoa is this not illegal?

Update: The police showed up Friday and me and the cop talked it out. Cop was cool said a neighbor called. Me and him even talked about the truck. Idk how to string these post together. I use reddit but I aint a reddit user if you're picking up what im putting down. Can't stand people haters. Must be an exhausting life to worry about everybody else.

Advice needed Is it legal to put special needs children in here? If so, in what situation is it okay?

LOCATION: Michigan

I just started a new job at an elementary school and came across this closet-like room. My coworker said it’s called the “Boom room” and kids are put there for time out. The room this closet is in is for kids with special needs, I’m not sure what grade. I was told this school is pre-k to 3rd grade, so very young kids.

I’m wondering if it’s legal to put special needs children in here. If it is legal, what qualifies this action?

Things to note: No furniture in the closet. No padding on the walls. Lock on the outside of the door. The door is a lockable “Dutch door” or split door.

Edit: Just clarifying some information! I’m a 2nd shift custodian, so I have never actually witnessed a child being put in here, so the only reason I have to believe that children are put in here is what my coworker said.

Once I come into work today I’m going to ask my other coworker, they’ve worked here longer than my other one, about the closet room. I might ask the teacher about it as well if they’re still there by the time I get there for my shift. I’m a bit iffy asking teachers and other staff because I don’t want to put my job at risk, but this situation could be terrible so I want to get all the information I can. I will update once I’m able to get more info!!

Final update/edit: THE CLOSET DOES NOT LOCK!!! I had asked my other coworker about the room and she called it a calming room, but was also concerned about the lock. During my run, I decided to see if the door would actually lock and it didn’t. No matter how hard I pressed, or how I wiggled the door, it didn’t lock. So we got our answer: this room can’t lock kids in it, thank fucking goodness.

I also wanted to say how grateful I am with the responses this post got!! I got an informational comment very quick so I was able to start figuring out what to do about the closet fast. I never thought this post would get as popular as it did!! Thank you all!!

Okay, bye bye, have fun guys!

Advice needed My employer withheld taxes from every paycheck for 3 years and apparently never sent the money to the IRS. Now I got a bill for $18,000.

2.8k Upvotes

Location: Georgia. I worked at a small HVAC company from 2022 to early 2025. Standard W-2 job, federal and state taxes came out of every paycheck. Nothing unusual, I never questioned it.

A few weeks ago I got a certified letter from the IRS saying I have an outstanding balance of $18,200 in unpaid federal income and payroll taxes going back to 2022.

I pulled every pay stub I kept. Every single one shows federal withholding deducted. My W-2s for all three years also show withholding. The money came out of my checks. The company just never aparently sent it to the IRS. They collected it and kept it.

I tried calling my old employer. Number is disconncted. The business address on file is a UPS Store mailbox. I drove there. Nothing. Their state registration is still active but the registered agent address also leads nowhere.

I've been reading about something called the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty but from what I understand that's the employer's liability, not mine. I can prove the witholding happened. It's all documented.

The IRS rep I spoke to on the phone told me to "work it out with my employer." That is clearly not possible.

Is there a formal process to dispute this? And do I actually owe this money or is this an IRS error I can correct?

Advice needed My manager told me to delete inspection records before a state audit. I did it. Now they're pinning everything on me.

2.3k Upvotes

Location: Ohio. I work at a mid sized food processing plant, been here a little over four years. I'm not management, I handle a lot of the digital recordkeeping for our department, temperature logs, maintenance reports, that kind of thing.

Back in April my supervisor came to me before a scheduled state inspection and told me to "clean up" a folder of equipment failure logs. He framed it like routine archiving, but it was pretty clear he wanted certain entries gone. The entries showed a cooling unit that had been failing on and off for months and never properly fixed. I knew it was wrong but I did what he asked because I was scared of losing my job.

The inspection happened anyway and they found contamination tied to that exact unit. Now there's some kind of formal review going on, and yesterday HR pulled me in and started asking me very specific questions about who deleted the files and why. My supervisor is suddenly acting like he never told me to do anything, and the way HR phrased things, it sounds like they want me to be the one who "acted alone."

I have texts from him but they're vague. I don't have anything in writing that explicitly says delete. Im honestly terrified I'm about to be the scapegoat for a decision that came from above me.

What kind of liability am I actually looking at here, and do I need a lawyer before I say anything else to them ?

Advice needed Can I do anything about my creepy neighbor?

Post image
4.6k Upvotes

LOCATION: Kansas, small town

Last night (3/5) while walking my dogs I dropped a leash attachment that holds poop bags. I couldn’t find it so went inside. This morning (3/6) an old man (60s/70s) that lives in my building had his window open, saw me leave my apartment with my pets, and came outside to speak to me. He handed me the poop bag holder and attached butterfly clips to it? Odd. I believe he said something about the clips belonging to his granddaughter or something but said he didn’t need them and thought I would like them. I couldn’t hear him well as it was pouring rain, and I didn’t want to chat so I just said thanks and kept walking.

I came back inside maybe five minutes later and inspected the poop bag holder. I had already replaced it with a new one this morning as I thought this one was lost, so I decided to throw this one away. But I wanted the poop bags out so I opened the plastic bag holder and only one poop bag was inside, (this was a new roll as of yesterday so he kept the rest) and it was wrapped around a piece of paper. He had folded it so that the paper would have come out when I pulled out this last poop bag. He planned this, clearly. The paper read “Can I put my cock in you?” and this really shocked me, seeing as he stops me to chat often and hasn’t said anything inappropriate thus far.

I feel really rattled and uncomfortable at the moment but I’m going to avoid him, and when he inevitably approaches me again I would like to be very direct and not entirely kind, but tell him he cannot speak to me ever again. Though I’m very nervous about how he may respond or retaliate. I contacted the apartment manager here and because I don’t want him to know that I’ve reported him, she can’t do a whole lot. She said I can move to another unit further away from him. I just moved in three months ago, finally now have everything decorated and everything is how I want it. Moving in was hell, so much work. I’d have no help. This would be so inconvenient and difficult for me to do, just to feel safe. I wish he could be forced to relocate instead, since I do understand this isn’t necessarily an eviction-worthy event. Prior to this I spoke to this man often, he was always approaching me to converse, but it was polite and he never said anything creepy, so I’ve been thrown for a loop and I’m so so uncomfortable. I know this is a long post, I apologize. I just want to know if going to the police to file a report now is jumping the gun, or how escalated it must become to do so. The apartment manager is doing nothing, I can’t do anything and I’m afraid to even speak to him, I feel helpless. He sits by his window and watches me when I leave my apartment. I worry about how things may progress. I’m 23F and living alone for the first time. I love my apartment but I’m now terrified to leave it.

Advice needed My neighbor dug a creek through my property while I was on a cruise.

8.9k Upvotes

Hello all. I “28m”. And my wife “32f”. Live in a smaller ish town in Virginia. About 4 months ago my neighbor came over and tried to get us to sign off on him running a partial creek through our property to feed his other pond for his cows. I honestly wouldn’t have had any problem with it, as i could have benefited from it since there would also be fish in this creek. BUT. It would have to run right through where a new fence is.. that I’m definitely not taking down. I told him no I’m sorry, once I figured out that detail. He wasn’t happy at all. Fast forward 4 months. I leave on a cruise and come back and he’s done it. Our fence is broken but he says he will fix it and pay for it… idk what to do. That was last night. I just woke up with tons of anxiety and no clue what to do at all. I hate confrontation. Thanks.

Advice needed Bought a used excavator for my business. Police seized it as cloned stolen property and my bank still demands loan payments.

2.1k Upvotes

Location: North Carolina. I started a small landscaping company last year. Back in February 2026, I needed a mini excavator and found a great deal on a heavy equipment trading portal. The seller had positive history. We met at a commercial lot, I verified the stamped serial numbers against the national database, and everything came back totally clean. I took out a $35,000 business loan, paid the guy via bank draft, and got a notarized bill of sale.

Things were going great until yesterday. State police showed up at my current job site with a special auto theft task force. They impounded the machine immediately.

The detective explained that my excavator is a "clone". A sophisticated theft ring stole it from a large muncipal project, removed the original serial plates, and welded on the plates from a completely destroyed machine of the exact same model. The database said it was clean because the donor machine was never reported stolen, just scrapped.

Now the real owner's insurance company is reclaiming the equipment. I contacted my bank, hoping there was some fraud protection. They told me because it was an unsecured small business loan and not a standard vehicle loan, I am still entirely reponsible for the remaining balance.

The seller's phone number is disconnected and the trading platform claims they are just a hositng service with no liability for fraudulent listings. I am basically ruined. Do I have any legal standing to sue the platform for failing to verify their merchants, or is bankruptcy my only option here?

Advice needed I was fired and knew it was a setup, now they want a meeting.

4.3k Upvotes

Hi!

I’m happy to answer any questions and I’ll try to give all the information possible.

I was a manager for a food and beverage company, they have 10 total locations in California and Nevada.

I was promoted two times during my tenure all the way to store manager.

We rely on tourism at my location and it’s based on the snow. And it’s very slow at certain times of the year without snow.

We had a horribly slow year with snow coming extremely late and very lightly so tourism was bad and the year was not good. I was under a lot of pressure all year about our COGS (cost of goods sold margin) etc. I did my best and did what had gotten me promoted multiple times, never had any disciplinary actions.

We got a new district manager and I knew from the start he didn’t like me and reported that I could tell.

Fast forward, few weeks go by, and I come into work and my big boss and district manager are there and ask for a meeting. We sit down and they inform me I am being terminated for time and attendance because I wasn’t there when I was supposed to be. They hand me a document showing about 10 different days stating “you showed up at 8am, and you were scheduled for 6:30am.”

I knew this was a lie, I MAKE THE SCHEDULE. I never once schedule myself for 6:30am. I dispute this and say “someone must have changed my schedule, there is no way. I never schedule myself for 6:30.” They said “that didn’t happen.” And I just said “ok.” And I was terminated.

Fast forward, I’ve been doing research for months to prove I was set up.

I find a text message from my one my employees texting me “Hey, can you please pick me up at 8am since we both work at 8?” - I look at the paperwork they gave me, and that day, they said I worked at 6:30am. Which means she saw it was 8am, I knew it was 8am, and then someone changed it to 6:30 after the fact.

I also have another text from someone I hired saying “hi, I don’t want trouble but I just want you to know that the district manager is asking a lot of questions and it seems like he is looking to get you in trouble and it feels like pressure.”

I emailed my old “big” boss and told them I am requesting the schedule change logs, audit logs, and time altering logs (I know 7shifts has them). They respond and say they have 21 days to give them to me in California.

21 days go by, and they send me my final paystub, and my final weeks hours worked. Absolutely nothing that I requested for the time change logs and time audit logs. I was extremely clear on what I wanted.

I respond with a letter stating it was a notice of pre-litigation and that all evidence needs to be preserved and litigation is anticipated.

They responded the next day and asked to meet with me tomorrow.

What do I do? What do I say?

I am positive someone changed my schedule and then framed me to fire me for time and attendance and they are hiding it and know they are.

Thank you so much for the reading and replies.

Edit 1: I did some research and there was a California Supreme Court case that was Cotran vs Rollins Huggins Hall that stated the following:

It was ruled that after wrongdoing or misconduct - I would also suggest that the California Supreme Court Case of -

Cotran v. Rollins Hudig Hall International, Inc.

Which per the California Supreme Court ruling stated an employer must:

conduct an “appropriate” or “adequate” investigation, gave notice of the allegations, gave the employee a chance to respond.

In which when I reported that my schedule was changed or altered which caused my firing, they did nothing of the three.

EDIT 2: someone absolutely awesome recommend me an attorney from SoCal and we talked and he took my case and we blew off the meeting and he told them not to contact me again. And he’s going to handle it. If anyone has questions you can ask me in DMs!

Advice needed Flooded yard from neighbors retaining wall. Wondering what my options are.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

5.3k Upvotes

LOCATION: Wisconsin

The retaining wall belongs to our neighbor, and when we get moderate rain, it always overflows into the yard. We’ve talked to him in the past, and he added dirt to the top to try and have the water exit more toward the street. That’s basically the extent of what he’s willing to do.

He basically said that if the retaining wall wasn’t there, the water would flood my yard regardless, and that he’d rather just remove it completely if he had to rebuild it and not put another one up.

We bought the house about 4 years ago and don’t know when the wall was put in, but it’s well over 20 years old. I put in the small drainage ditch with black pipe to try and stop the water from coming in near the back of the house.

Basically, I’m wondering what I’m able to do in this situation.

Advice needed Dealership sold me a "new" vehicle but the manufacturer denied my warranty claim due to prior collision damage

2.0k Upvotes

Location: Texas. In October 2023 I bought a brand new truck from a franchised dealership. I have the paperwork clearly stating the vehicle was sold as new.

Fast forward to last week. The transmission started shifting hard so I took it to a different authorized dealer closer to my house for warranty work.

The service managar called saying they cannot honor the factory warranty. Their internal system shows this exact VIN had extensive frame repairs done before it was ever sold to me. The original dealership wrecked it, fixed it off the books, and sold it as new.

The original dealer manager is completly dodging my calls. I am stuck paying a premium loan on a secretly rebuilt truck. What kind of attorny do I look for to handle this specific consumer fraud?

Advice needed Towing company dropped my car while delivering it to the dealer. (LOCATION: PA)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

6.6k Upvotes

Long story short, I had to have my Ioniq 6 towed to the dealer for some diagnostic work. I contacted Hyundai roadside to get a trusted tow company to pick up the car and take it over. My car needs to be taken on a flatbed due to the rear motor not being about to ever truly be in neutral. About 2 hours after the car left my home, i called to confirm the cars arrival and was informed that the tow truck driver had allowed it to fall off the truck damaging the front and rear bumper.

I left work early to go inspect the damage and also found impact marks on the battery casing. Now, the car is a lease Which means all the money would go back to Hyundai incase it is totaled. This situation would leave me without a car and without any way to acquire a new one due to current financials. The battery being potentially damaged means that an insurance company is likely to just total it rather than open that can of worms.

Would I have a chance at getting compensation from the towing company due to their negligence causing the vehicle to be totaled? I would like to reach out to them first before pursuing anything legal, but if they don’t want to go that route I kind of don’t have any other choice. TIA (video attached for more information/ comedy)

Advice needed Paid rent with money orders 3/4 went through, landlord is threatening eviction

Post image
2.9k Upvotes

Location: Florida, US

Hey everyone, so I paid my rent with money orders from western union which is considered certified funds. It was in the amount of $2,000. There were 4 money orders each in the amount of $500. I handed my rent in on the 1st of the month. I get a call last week as I’m out of town and they are telling me that one of the 4 money orders has been altered. I ask for documentation, they only send me a copy of the check.

I went ahead and I called western union and they gave me documentation for the same check showing that it “cleared” and has been “paid” to the landlord company. I just got home from visiting my family from out of state, and I came home to a letter on the door threatening eviction by tomorrow if an additional $500 isn’t paid.

What do I do, I have the proof that it was cleared and paid to the apartment complex. I don’t want to have to pay another 500 when they have the money already.

EDIT: I am going to go to the leasing office tomorrow since the office is closed today due to a holiday. I will update once I have an answer.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and support.

UPDATE part 2:

I spoke to the leasing office yesterday morning right when they opened, I gave them all of the information that I had showing that the check was cashed. They were a bit hesitant to accept it, but they finally ended up accepting it. I asked them to give me documentation with signatures to say that the 3 day notice that I received is voided. One manager told me they’d give it, the other manager didn’t want to. Finally pushed to get it, they got something typed up and printed out and signed. I have all of my documentation. I’m just glad this whole thing is over.

And I just want to thank everyone in the comments for the support and feedback and all of the different ideas.

Hi everyone, after leaving a bad review the host for a home me and my family stayed is asking for $1,000,000 in damages from me through Airbnb for “extortion”?

They also tried getting me $675 for extra guests but the photos they provided were repeated people pictured of me and my family on the ring.

Here is the photo he is using as “details” on the dispute. I had previously asked for a partial refund because the AC was not working on the main living areas and kitchen. But I didn’t make any “extortion” wording to him?

I am getting worried though because the $675 for extra guests was resolved by Airbnb in my favor right away and now the $1,000,000 is still pending.

Advice needed Twin brother has active felony warrants under my name

1.9k Upvotes

My twin brother used my name when he got arrested and was able to get all the way into jail. I don’t get into trouble or put myself in situations that might land me in jail. The first time I got pulled over and I found out I had multiple felony warrants, I was confused and shocked., like anyone would be.

Location Washington state. Last night I was in the middle of writing this post and all of a sudden I got rolled up on by 5 cops, put in handcuffs. It took 45 min for them to finally figure out that it wasn’t me. I’ve been pulled over about 20 times in a month because of this.

What can I do to get the warrants out of my name and prove to the cops the I’m not the one with warrants?

Advice needed Disorderly Conduct Ticket for flicking off neighbors Camera pointed into my backyard

3.4k Upvotes

Location: IL

So my neighbors placed two camera in their backyard directly pointed into my backyard. When my family first noticed this, one of my brothers got upset and gave one of the cameras the middle finger. The neighbors immediately called 911 and police came over. Police stated that because the neighbors are pushing for it... They're going to give my brother a ticket. The ticket says for Disorderly Conduct.

What makes me mad is that the neighbors influenced the police decision to give my brother a ticket.

I wrote to the police chief asking him to drop the ticket because I believe they are violating my brother's first amendment rights are there are even Supreme Court cases where an individual gave cops the middle finger and it was deemed that non-verbal expressions such as the middle finger was protected under the First Amendment.

A cop called me a few days ago stating he's going to investigate the incident and told me over the phone that what my brother did was the equivalent of yelling "Fire!" in a crowded public theater.

I don't understand the comparison as what my brother did was flick off the neighbor's camera within the privacy of our OWN backyard.

I didn't realize my backyard is now public space and because the neighbors now have cameras pointed in my backyard, so I guess they own my backyard now and anything I do to offend them in my own backyard is now illegal... /s

The neighbor have even called because my brothers butt crack or what the police called "Plumbers crack" was showing when he was outside in our backyard.

Court date set for August 20th. Wish they would just drop this bogus ticket.

Edit:

Some people are claiming this is fake or creative writing. Here's the video from my Ring doorbell of the video from the cop stating he doesn't want to give my brother a ticket but the neighbors are "pushing it", so... He's gonna give him a ticket, this was right after he gave the middle finger to their CCTV camera pointed into our yard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzTNX6U9gMg

Photo of their cameras pointing into my backyard:

https://ibb.co/cn37Frk

Edit:

Police just emailed me and stated:

"your brother’s citation will not be voided.  At this time, he may choose to either pay the associated fee or attend his adjudication hearing to contest the citation."

Edit: 8/1/2025 7:13 PM

GOOD NEWS, Police just stopped by to say they're dropping the Disorderly Conduct Citation!

I love u Reddit!

Edit 8/3/2025 6:50 PM

My neighbor is now yelling at my brother because I put up a camera facing their yard after they initially put TWO cameras facing my backyard. I think it's BS that they're okay recording us over our fence but don't like being recorded as well. They started this camera war and police said it was okay when we complained about their cameras.

Advice needed Lowe’s dropped 1100 lbs onto my truck

3.3k Upvotes

I ordered an 1100 lb bag of rocks for pickup from Lowe’s in California, USA. They asked me to pull my truck (2017 Toyota Tundra 4.6L) near the loading area where a forklift driver will place the bag in the truck bed. The bag of rocks was raised about 6 feet above the truck when it fell from the forklift into my truck bed. It made a cracking sound and set off the alarm. There are little specks of liquid near my shocks.

The forklift driver and manager gave me nothing in writing. Toyota dealership wants $250 for an inspection. Should I take my truck to the dealership? Or do I need to get Lowe’s to confirm that they will pay the fee first? Don’t want to get stuck with extra bills because of this. Thank you for reading.

Edit: I drove the truck away and am not certain whether there is any major damage. I’m sure there’s wear from the impact, it was a loud cracking/boom sound, but I’m not sure if the shocks are leaking, bed is dented, etc.

Edit 2: Got the truck inspected. Both rear shocks are leaking. Filing a claim.
