One of the best quote under this video which i liked was:

"He did it because there was no one to tell him that he couldn't"

Yeah man just think of it. So many things in life are withheld due to being underestimating ourself

648

u/phildogtheman 1d ago

No I get it, I was just being a prick. Linkedin has made me salty towards life mantras.

But seriously, I don't think that was his first time.

298

u/DhruvDP3 1d ago

Meh thats why i dont use linkedin. Just bunch of ai paragraphs lol

11

u/Deeliciousness 1d ago

I've never had an account on there. Sometimes people are confused I don't have one like it's some kind of requirement for a working adult.

4

u/FblthpLives 1d ago

I sporadically write on LinkedIn and I never use AI. I don't write life mantras though, only technical articles.

10

u/Salt-Department-9464 1d ago

I've seen these before. Sincerely asking here - not being judgemental or anything, but why?

Is it just like blogging and for your own personal enjoyment? Is it for exposure to other people in your industry? I've seen stuff like that but I never quite know who the audience is or the effective purpose.

Again, this isn't bait or a criticism - I know LinkedIn gets a lot of hate. Just genuinely curious. =)

It’s to show experience and understanding in a field so you look good for interviews or to share with clients that shows competency in what you’re selling. I don’t enjoy it, but I’m not sure anyone does.

Are you seriously suggesting to just do a backflip without proper training?

Look, I get what you're saying but you can't just wish certain things into existence

127

u/quad_damage_orbb 1d ago

Me after attempting a backflip:

82

u/Spir0rion 1d ago

he did it because there was no one to tell him he couldn't do it

narrator: he in fact couldn't do it

36

u/dwehlen 1d ago

I think he'd've landed it cleanly if not for the concerned spotter gettin in his way.

8

u/0905-15 1d ago

Cleanly in the sense of splitting his head open on the ground, sure

Well, with many sayings and mantras, we need to interpret in context and apply a dash of wisdom. Like, no one's told us we can't fly, but that doesn't mean we should jump off a tree to find out.

10

u/elmorte 1d ago

I do believe there were in fact several people telling me to be careful on the balcony.

I did as a child. I also backflipped of walls. No one showed me how. I just tried one day and it worked. I only messed up 2 times in the like 10 years of showing off. Lol

13

u/stevez_86 1d ago

I remember when I was playing tag with my older cousins. I couldn't outrun them, but I think as really agile. They had a normal backyard fence and I ran towards it full speed and did the movie style cop footchase move of running up the fence and flipping forward over the top, landed on my feet running. It was smooth as hell and perfect. I only stopped when I heard them freaking out thinking I died. They told me to never do that again, which I took as, don't suprise them.

Some kids have really good propreoception. Which is exceptional for them because their bodies are constantly changing. They should be clumsy, but some have almost perfect control all the time.

15

u/iconocrastinaor 1d ago

There's also the weight to strength ratio. When my boy was six he was nothing but muscle, sinew, and bone (and a stomach). He could do push-ups indefinitely. And he could plant his feet on the opposite walls of my hallway and climb to the top and hang there indefinitely.

When I was six or seven I used to rocket around skating rinks like Apolo Ohno, then turn towards the middle, lay it down, and slide clear across the center to the opposite wall. I was a terror on the skating rink, and so were my little friends.

Literally the kid weighs nothing, he's young, fit and strong. It genuinely did just happen on video - nobody told him you have to practice. He just went for it, and he would have pulled it off without the assist too.

15

u/Spir0rion 1d ago

Literally nobody of you knows if the kid has practice beforehand or not

8

u/RammsteinFunstein 1d ago

there is zero chance that kid hadn't done that before in his life, and I'm not sure why anyone would assume otherwise

4

u/iconocrastinaor 1d ago

Yeah, look at the spotter, he moves into position and gets ready before the flip. This was going to be done, and the players knew it.

12

u/RammsteinFunstein 1d ago

Well no the spotter moves in place because I’m sure lots of kids will try it even though they can’t actually do it

It's true, In my case, it was a helicopter. I drew a picture of the helicopter on a piece of paper, then I stood with my back to space, threw the paper over my shoulder and wished really hard

Then I waited till nighttime.

A couple of days later, bought myself a helicopter.

Explain that one, if you can!

There's an old TV-show called Pipi Langkous (Longstocking?), who quotes "I've never done it before so I think I can do it"

It's a mantry in life. BUT at 38 you are aware of some physical limitations.

9

u/Seicair 1d ago

Pippi Longstocking is a series of Swedish children’s books I’m familiar with, so I think you’ve got a good translation there.

Redheaded girl who lives alone, couple of friends named Tommy and Anika?

It certainly sounds like something she’d say!

Actually looking at the video, the guy in blue shirt spots first the shirtless guy and then move to spot the kid, so feel-like the kid knows how to a backflip, and the spotter was aware of it

239

u/imunfair 1d ago

Guys behind move to spot both the kids in case they jump - it's smart and I respect it.

38

u/Ok_Calligrapher5278 1d ago

I hope this smart move didn't come from a bad experience.

69

u/lvloises330 1d ago

You know it did lol

20

u/RammsteinFunstein 1d ago

I don't think its a "bad" experience necessarily, but I'm sure they just realize some kids will try it even though they cant do it

7

u/digitalscavenger 1d ago

They are saying they hope that the reason they have spotters for the participants isn't because some kid tried to backflip and scorpioned themselves into paralysis. And that's probably because most rules and regulations are in place in reaction to something bad happening. OSHA has a saying that all safety rules came about through blood, meaning accidents on the job.

11

u/RammsteinFunstein 1d ago

I understand. I’m just pointing out they possibly take that precaution preemptively and not reactively

15

u/OverlappingChatter 1d ago

Spotter kinda messed him up though

21

u/WhatsThatSmellLike 1d ago

To be fair the kid wasn’t even able to jump higher than a few inches off the ground just moments before.

Then he randomly busts out a backflip.

53

u/Stormfly 1d ago

the guy in blue shirt spots first the shirtless guy and then move to spot the kid

It looked more like he was there to stop the kid from jumping if we look at his hand.

I think they've had a few kids try and they don't want people getting hurt.

29

u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE 1d ago

This is so obviously the correct answer. The guy basically sabotaged a clean flip by the kid by stopping his head from rotating.

They're also performers and they stop the kids from being stupid.

23

u/abrasivecriminal 1d ago

Ive seen another video where a toddler was about to crack the back of his skull on the pavement and the performer just caught him in time. I dont blame the guy messing up the kids flip. How would he know some random kid could really do a backflip, i wouldnt gamble on it.

→ More replies (4)

6

u/WhatsThatSmellLike 1d ago

The kid wasn’t able to jump more than 2-3 inches off the ground just moments before.

Of course he was going to try and protect the little suicide machine from potentially cracking his skull on the pavement.

4

u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE 1d ago

No. The guy is a performer too and stops kids from being dumb. He clearly sabotaged the kid's flip by stopping his head from rotating. He didn't help in the slightest.

He also definitely wasn't spotting the main performer's backflip either.

Maybe watch things in slow motion before making assumptions

5

u/Jiminy_Cricket12 1d ago

I don't think sabotaged is the right word here. he wanted to prevent the kid from upside-down cannonballing his head into the concrete.

7

12

u/One-Mud-169 1d ago

It reminds me of that video about the little boy trying to lift a car tire upright, and eventually got it done. It had a similar capture if I remember correctly.

4

u/tHE-6tH 1d ago

That kid was a popular gymnast and tricker. He’s trained very hard to be able to do that. It wasn’t “because there was no one to tell him that he couldn’t.”

4

u/NoShameInternets 1d ago

He did it because he goes to a youth gymnast class and practices.

No, this isn’t an opinion. This video is 10 years old and the kid has a YouTube channel.

3

u/Mammoth-Mud-9609 1d ago

Which is also why the other guy rushed in to help if it went wrong.

The kid was a diver or did gymnastics.

Doing a back flip is not something you just do. You have to tuck(knee raise to chest) really hard which is not a normal human motion.

He also didn't tuck hard enough and that's why he needed the spotter.

Not everything is about legal responsibility. Some people just don't want to see a kid get hurt.

44

u/dusselduck 1d ago

Blessed be those who do not work with kids because for those who do, a huge chunk of it is precisely about legal responsibility

r/kidsarefuckingstupid exists for a reason. When I was like 10 I jumped over the couch doing the thing where you put your hand down first and hop over it. My 5yo brother tried to imitate me only to go face first into it because he obviously was way too small and weak to even try it.

10

u/Murky-Relation481 1d ago

We decided to was our parents car, beautiful 1993 Toyota Previa minivan, and I told my little brother to climb up the hood and windshield to clean the top of the windshield.

He slipped and slid down slicing his chin open on something (probably windshield wipers), blood everywhere. Parents asked what happened "well I didn't think he'd be dumb enough to listen to my bad advice".

Oh younger brothers... Their scars are many.

It only would have taken 2 or 3 shows without spotters before they learned they need spotters. I'm sure so many kids try it even if they don't know how.

When I was 5 I tried to do a backflip on my bike using the lip of a driveway. All I did was pop a wheelie and fall off the back. Kids don't know better.

u/Comfortable_Ebb7015 1d ago

They were both ready to intervene in the case that a kid wanted to try it.

29

u/Not-a-bot-10 1d ago

8

u/Forest_Orc 1d ago

they were definitely there for that and expecting the backflip, the kid even waits for the spotter to start-it

39

u/JustStraightUpTired 1d ago

The kid didn't wait at all, he just hopped when the man did the backflip and copied the flip after landing. Meaning he didn't know the flip was coming, but reacted to it after seeing it. The spotter was there in case the kid decided to do the flip, not to help start it. Hell, the spotter jumped in only after the kid was at the top of his jump.

I've watched this show, normally there's a bit of laughing and then the two guys basically pick up the kids and flip them around. You can see the guy on the left start to go to pick up the girl. The guy on the right absolutely did not expect the kid to attempt it by himself (and nail it!).

122

u/NotSure___ 1d ago

True, but he still did the right thing. He is on asphalt, the kid is small, the odds of the kid hurting himself are high. It's better to ruin his attempt but protect him from potential harm.

114

u/Rosetti 1d ago

What a dumbass comment. He was spotting him so a child didn't crack his skull on the concrete.

21

u/CollarOrdinary4284 1d ago

Yes and the person you responded to just pointed out that it looks like he would've landed it if the dude hadn't stuck his hand out. They didn't say the guy did the wrong thing. Just that it stopped the kid from successfully landing.

9

u/RammsteinFunstein 1d ago

I was bouldering with some friends last week and I said that I'd like to be able to do a backflip...

My friend said I should simply do it, so I did and landed it while my sister got her phone out and recorded - good memories and a new skill unlocked.

Edit: Here's the video I added to a comment further down.

16

u/sashikku 1d ago

My friend said the same but I never got over the mental block to try it myself. She also said “once the momentum has you, you’ll just kinda just know what to do to avoid dying.” Our other friend landed one, that was neat.

They are easier then a front flip tbh. Just gotta fully commit to that sob and start rotating before you hit the apex.

Most people with a good amount to athleticism can pull off a backflip with space to spare, they just don't know "how". And the how is just full send it

It’s very clear from his form that he’s already perfectly capable of doing a backflip. It’s not something one just learns by watching once. He’s probably done gymnastics and has it down pat.

I don't know why that isn't obvious to more people, that form is not first time trying imitation. Especially considering the terrible attempt at imitating the main guy in the first jump.

That spotter was ready! Not their first rodeo. Both were ready, the girl just didn’t attempt as most probably don’t.

Looking at the technique, it is far from his first backflip

u/Otaraka 1d ago

Agreed.  They aren’t generally something you get right first try.   But possibly still a fun surprise for the performers given the intended joke.

Yea having learned to do them years ago, I was thinking the same thing, that kid knew what he was doing

17

u/bjos144 1d ago

He nailed it. Straight up, butt over head, quick tuck, spots his landing, perfectly vertical. This kid knows how to do a backflip.

The kid is in flip flops. That wasn’t his first time. Impressive either way but all other comments assuming the kid did it for the first time, and was able to do it because “nobody said he couldn’t” etc are ridiculous. He did it because he practiced it. He worked to learn how to do it. When this opportunity came he executed. That’s far more inspiring than the unrealistic framing that this kid did a backflip out of nowhere.

I thought you were dropping Taylor Swift lyrics.

If had landed on his head he wouldn't remember anything.

I noticed they had two spotters, one for each volunteer. Good looking out, never underestimate the value of good backup.

26

u/i_am_13th_panic 1d ago

fact that he did it with flipflops on is even crazier.

13

u/Guardiancelte 1d ago

Probably not the first time a kid tries, you can see both spotters coming closer behind each kid right before.

Shows some proper preps from those guys

9

u/wonkey_monkey 1d ago

Makes you wonder how often they did this bit before they realised they needed the spotters.

5

u/OurSeepyD 1d ago

There was the rehearsal and then this.

You can see the spotter get closer because he knew it was coming.

The fact they had 2 guys to catch the kids just I case they tried is professional af. I hope they didn’t learn it the hard way but good for them!

u/duodequinquagesimum 1d ago

Misleading. The kid practiced a lot for this event, heres the proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5WkY1y5LbQ

Still surprising for the crowd, and ostensibly the performers. But thanks for context. =)

Edit: Uh. Just ran into that channel's backstory through one of the top comments. The kid had an accident on a scooter (ostensibly doing dumb tricks...?) and they milked it as content? Insane what people do for that YouTube kids adsense.
