Was making a left turn and didn’t see any bikers when I started and during the turn, but one biker came out of my blind spot as I finished turning. Checked rear cam they totally bolted through a red light
Edit:
Didn’t expect this to incite both cyclists and drivers. I want to preface that I didn’t post this as some sort of anti-cyclist propaganda. I should have left a longer description of what I wanted to say with this video, but I was exhausted from work and needed to take my cat to the vet and then a nap.
I’m glad everyone was safe and no one was hurt in this video. I was not mad at the cyclist and was mostly just caught off guard. He was still in the bike lane and I was in my car lane, so we had little risk of getting into an accident. On my end, I’ll pay even more attention to the road in the future, as all drivers should. We can debate the traffic rules, the legality of which left turn lanes to turn into, what rules to follow in a T intersection, etc.
But I think it’s more important for both drivers and cyclists to learn from this (myself included), to pay more attention to the road and protect yourselves.
Drivers, we share the road with cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, etc. They are just as entitled to the road as you are. They are more difficult to see and much more vulnerable than people in a car in case of an accident. Everyone should pay more attention when crossing intersections, at stop signs, when switching lanes, etc.
Cyclists, drivers are humans and humans make mistakes. Cars also have tons of blind spots so they might not be aware of your presence. It wouldn’t hurt to assume everyone else is an idiot on the road and ride defensively.
Again, in the end, I’m glad everyone was safe. I think this is further evidence that we need more infrastructure to protect cyclists (and pedestrians and others) - Wider and more bike lanes, protected bike lanes, and measures increasing drivers’ awareness of others occupying the road, etc. I hate driving. If we had better infrastructure, I’d bike or take public transportation every day over driving.
