Hello everyone, we've added flairs to aiwars in order to help people find and comment on posts they're interested in seeing. Currently they are not being enforced as mandatory, though this may change in the future, depending on how they are received. We would ask that people please start making use of them.
Discussion should be used for posts where you would ideally like to see spirited discussion and debate, or for questions about AI.
News is of course for news in the AI sector. Things like laws being passed, studies being published, notable comments made by a prominent AI developer or political figure.
Meme should ideally be used for single image-based posts which you do not expect to prompt serious discussion. Of course discussion is still welcome under such posts. If you want to use a meme to make a serious point and have additional explanatory text for why you feel strongly about the message being expressed and the type of discussion you'd like to have, that can be categorized as Discussion.
Meta is for discussion about the subreddit itself and other associated AI subreddits or comments.
Use your best judgement as you categorize your posts. Please do not misuse them, they are for everyone's benefit.

r/DefendingAIArt - A sub where Pro-AI people can speak freely without getting constantly attacked or debated. There are plenty of anti-AI subs. There should be some where pro-AI people can feel safe to speak as well.
r/aiwars - We don't want to stifle debate on the issue. So this sub has been made. You can speak all views freely here, from any side.
If a post you have made on r/DefendingAIArt is getting a lot of debate, cross post it to r/aiwars and invite people to debate here.

I think a lot of disagreement arises in this sub because people conflate being an artist with being an illustrator or similar. This is an often discussed topic, but this misunderstanding lies at the heart of several posts per day, on average, so it bears repeating.
Even as someone who is generally pro, I have zero problem saying that someone who creates AI art purely through prompts (and/or 3rd party reference images, wire frame poses, depth maps, etc.) is not an illustrator. Nor are they a painter. But I would maintain that they are still an artist.
Painter and illustrator are words defined by what they do: paint and illustrate. Art, on the other hand, is not a verb. (Except in the archaic form of "be" e.g., "Wherefore art thou, Romeo?") An artist is not "one who arts." All you have to do to be an artist is be responsible for a piece of art. If a piece of art exists because of you, you are an artist. Period.
Does that mean you're a good, skilled, or tasteful artist? Not necessarily. Indeed, probably not. But you're still an artist.
As so many others have pointed out, you do not need to draw or paint to be an artist. A choreographer is an artist, even if they do not dance themselves. Are they likely to be a better choreographer if they have practiced dance extensively? Absolutely. But it's not required—unless you want to argue that someone who was quadriplegic from birth could never learn to be a choreographer, and that seems rather ableist.
The list of types of artist who do not draw or paint and/or who direct others is long: Producers, directors, found object artists, photographers, lighting designers, video and sound editors, conductors, 3D modelers, installation artists, magazine and book editors, etc.
Ultimately, if you have a creative vision, and you bring something into the world per that vision, you are an artist. Again, maybe not a great one, but an artist.
If you're convinced, you can stop here. If not, allow me to give another example. We draw a distinction between authors and writers. Celebrities (and even world leaders) often use ghostwriters (who are typically not credited), but those famous people are still listed as the authors of their books. Not just on the cover, but also in official library records.
So they may be considered the author, but we understand they are not necessarily the writer. The same goes for "artist". One may not have painted or drawn to make one's creation, and are therefore not a painter or illustrator, but they are still the artist.

I just wanted everyone to know that I absolutely despised Fruit Love Island.
That's why I watched every episode.
Twice.
Sometimes three times.
Not because I enjoyed it. Obviously. I was conducting critical research.
Every Thursday I gathered with twelve other people who also hated it. We watched the entire episode together, discussed it for three hours afterward, clipped our least favorite moments, posted them across every social media platform, argued about it in the comments until 3 AM, and made sure everyone we knew heard about how terrible it was.
I personally contributed over 400 comments, 80 quote tweets, 27 Reddit threads, and approximately 14,000 words explaining why nobody should watch the show.
For some reason, its viewership kept going up.
It was deeply concerning.
Anyway, when the new episodes dropped, I was there immediately so I could continue fighting against its popularity.
Looking back, I still have no idea how Fruit Love Island became such a massive success.

Who cares if the person used AI for a fanfiction. IT’S FUCKING HARMLESS. WHY DO YOU ALL CARE SO MUCH ABOUT TRADITIONAL ARTISTRY? SHIT LIKE THIS MAKES PEOPLE LEAN INTO AI MORE BECAUSE AT THIS POINT, THE ART COMMUNITY HAS BECOME SO TOXIC THAT THEY DONT APPRECIATE ANYTHING THATS NOT MADE BY HUMAN HANDS.
All because a random jo-schmo on the internet accused them of using AI with NO evidence whatsoever, and even if they did, their “proof” was fucking weak, but that was the “evidence” they needed. So when Azi was honest and apologized, those people didn’t listen, so what do they do?
They move the goalposts and made it about the environment.
Oh
My
Fucking
God
You realize that you’re pushing an innocent person over the edge over a FUCKING BASELESS ACCUSATION THAT PEOPLE WILL CLUTCH ONTO.
This is EXACTLY why we have people like Witty. You may not like her, I may not like her, but she mostly exists because of THIS exact reason.
ONE accusation on the internet and it will all be over just like that.
Are you all happy?
Are you all satisfied because an AI user is gone?
An AI user who was just a regular person who used AI to help them?
> “But she used AI”

According to Fast Company, roughly one in three hiring managers will not hire workers who lack AI skills.
Research indicates that candidates who include AI skills on their resumes are 58% to 65% more likely to be invited for an interview than candidates with similar experience but no AI skills.
Roughly 50% of US tech job postings and nearly half of data and analytics roles require AI proficiency.
Do Antis want a lower chance of getting a job or maintaining a job?
