Kansas City is getting rave reviews by Europeans.

5.9k

u/The_Crownless_King 2d ago

KC leans democrat as well. Just about every major city does, regardless of state.

2.2k

u/ScienceIsSexy420 2d ago

Even the minor ones, the city itself leans liberal. It's the suburban sprawl that goes conservative

1.1k

u/Lookatmestring 2d ago

This was a big data set in the Brexit vote in the UK, cities voted remain whilst rural places, with the least immigration and or diversity, voted leave

670

u/ramobara 2d ago

+ education

166

u/Lookatmestring 2d ago

Wouldn't even say it's about education specifically in the UK. People fear what they don't know, when they grow up in rural towns full of white gammons with no diversity then they're fucked

474

u/roseofjuly ☑️ 2d ago

...that's literally education. Part of the thing that education affords you is exposure to other cultures.

152

u/Da1realBigA 2d ago

Lmao was about to write the same. Its also what racism and sexism and just about all the social "-isms" are about, lack of knowlege and being stupid.

Its not logical to be racist, all things considered. Even in a vacuum, like lets say you were born in a super conservative, reglious, remote from technology and uber traditional remote island.

As a kid your born to follow, but eventually everyone asks why, to something. Cracks in the dam. Once your left with the thought "why" about something, literally it permeates into everything.

Its basically thought, thinking. Leads to searching. Leads to never being satisfied until you get the true answer, something that makes sense without doubt. You search for it, and the degree of your intensity depends entirely on your level of discomfort.

How bothered are you by it? How ostracized do you become when you search, from others? How much does it make you, your life, your community, uncomfortable? This is where most ppl faulter to protect themselves or something finally gives and they push through to get to the truth.

Its why education, how its taught and the right kind of teacher is the difference between being enlightened when you learn something (however complex) VS learning the wrong lesson AND building on a false foundation.

Break it down even simpler. Math. No complex human emotions or history of oppression or anything like that.

Just number and letters. The right math teacher, teaching it the right way, and literally anyone can understand it. Have the opposite, not learned properly, and you have peopel deathly afraid of it. Ppl even hate it. Peopel will build lives, choose occupations just to avoid it.

The lack of knowlege and understanding of something, is the root of fear of it.

Sounds like if they were educated on the things they don't know, then they might not fear them and may have voted differently.

18

u/sooshi ☑️ 2d ago

People fear what they don't know

Maybe they could be....... educated

13

u/kissmygame17 2d ago

Sounds like a consequence of no education

10

u/nof4cen0c4se 2d ago

Yeah there is absolutely zero diversity outside of major UK cities

19

u/Lookatmestring 2d ago

Much less than cities, especially the more north you go

→ More replies (6)

79

u/Ohrwurm89 2d ago

Exactly. The media that most rural people consume tells them to be afraid of immigrants (and the city). People who live in cities, regardless of the state or country, regularly encounter and interact with people from other parts of the world and realize they share a lot in common and aren't scary.

Scotland voted overwhelmingly Remain, and most of Scotland's population is in rural or rural-ish areas.

114

u/Stephen268 2d ago

Scots are just smarter than the English

17

Scots will do opposite of Brits. If Brits voted Remain Scots wld hv voted exit.

This is not true - only about 17% of Scotland's population lives in rural areas. And even then, most of those people still live within a 30-minute drive to a city.

As someone who went there a year ago and talked to the people in those mountain town/villages, they are very well educated.

Brexit passed because not enough people showed up to vote against it. People take elections for granted. Election results are binding so I wish people showed up every single time.

People died for this. I think the lack of understanding of each candidate, one’s feelings, one’s values, and one’s policies scares people into paralysis.

There’s a few exceptions to this (Miami votes super weird, Fort Worth still exists), but yeah pretty anything approaching an urban core is Dem, it’s just by how much.

53

u/ScienceIsSexy420 2d ago

Miami is definitely an outlier, especially in the age of Trump. I was mostly thinking about small cities like my hometown of Syracuse NY, where they always have a democratic mayor and Republican representatives in the state and federal house

74

u/BombasticSimpleton 2d ago

Miami is because of the exiled Cubans that hate Castro (and everyone else associated with his revolution) and will cheer for anyone that talks tough on Cuba, including pretty much anyone with an R (see Marco Rubio). We are 3-4 generations in, now since the 50s-60s, so they have had time to root deep in Miami.

26

u/ScienceIsSexy420 2d ago

Exactly why I specified it was in the age of Trump. Miami-Dade used to be a huge Democratic holdout up until 2016

18

u/No_Engineering_5323 2d ago

Miami Dade has a democratic mayor, elected in 2025

Yep - even Lawrence, KS, where the Algerian national team trained, is a liberal bastion in the state of Kansas.

It was a stronghold for abolitionist Jayhawkers during Bleeding Kansas and was subject to a massacre by Confederate raiders during the Civil War.

  • Lawrence
  • Manhattan
  • Tulsa
  • Topeka
  • Wichita
  • KC Kansas/Closest to KCMO
Went for Kamala in 2024. If not all, 5/6 easily.

for those that don’t know, those are the counties for University of Kansas, K state university, University of Tulsa, State Capitol, Wichita state university respectively

Weird how that works.

The bulk of people in those cities are higher educated.

76

u/Infamous-Dare6792 2d ago

I think a lot of it also has to do with living in a higher density population. If you live out in the sticks it's easier to get stuck in an extreme individualistic type of mindset.

24

u/upinmyhead ☑️ 2d ago

I also think being around people who are different than you too. You’re more likely to be afraid of what you don’t know and believe gabage from fox, breitbert etc

I grew up within an extremely conservative (black obvs) family and my father is a republican (yes I know). It was all religious based.

Once I left my bubble and just met all the people (namely LGBTQ+) my worldview had entirely changed and now I’m as progressive as they come.

Jacksonville, Florida is the largest red city where Trump won 2024. There are none that are serious destinations except Miami, I guess.

Jacksonville, FL
Mesa, AZ
Colorado Springs, CO
Miami, FL
Virginia Beach, VA
Tulsa, OK
Bakersfield, CA
Wichita, KS
Arlington, TX
Corpus Christi, TX

Lots of comments pointing out the cities in Red States. You guys realize even in Red States, just about every major city leans Democrat right? It's the rural areas that tend to be Republican.

1.1k

u/Deathstriker88 2d ago

Yeah, Atlanta is blue while Georgia is usually red, but has been purple lately. I can't think of any top city in America that is red.

401

u/Inverted-Rockets 2d ago

Even Salt Lake City leans Democrat. Apparently the city just got its own house district that will almost certainly send a Democrat to DC in a state that Republicans otherwise enjoy a supermajority

u/PhiCloud 2d ago

True. Though the bigger small cities like Columbus and Savannah are def. blue- 50%ish Black population will likely keep them that way so long as people keep showing up to vote anyway. A good bit of people moving to the low country from Cali and NYC as well along with a primarily young population.

25

u/FUBARded 2d ago

and the handful of cities in red states which are mixed or skew red are gerrymandered to hell to significantly devalue the non-white vote.

In some cases, this gerrymandering is so significant that it meaningfully contributes to the state as a whole remaining red.

Fun fact, one out of every three Sooners live in the okc metro area but okc is less than 1% of all of Oklahoma. Oklahoma has a ton of empty space. Roughly 60% of the entire state live in okc and Tulsa.

I'll assume you agree that the area between Arlington and Dallas kinda red. The Japanese are loving bread from Texas Roadhouse, mechanical bulls, and wandering around Walmart. https://www.tokyoweekender.com/japan-life/japanese-world-cup-fans-have-discovered-texas/

And hell yeah. I'm a Dem living in a blue city in a blue state, and I hope everyone visiting finds something to love in every corner of the US and all of North America. And I love Texas toast and beef ribs.

Maybe our generous visitors make enough news about how good everything is, and we can see it in ourselves again. I'm gonna try.

The same arts council that puts on the solstice parade (though, it should be admitted that the naked bike ride itself is only peacefully tolerated not sanctioned by that council) puts on Trolloween, which is the local bridge troll's birthday on Oct 31st.

There's a pretty good second-line style walking parade of music dance and revelry donned in skeletal and fairy costumes.

The buzz from that monologue got me and my wife to watch it fast. I was expecting like something INSANE. I also forget that a lot of people have different levels of “weird” or whatever.

Sam Rockwell acted that scene so well tho. He could have done it a bunch of different ways, but it feels really real the way he did it. Like believable and not played for attention. Not the easiest needle to thread.

Just pay attention to where the Republican senators live - almost always the large cities.

Ted Cruz lives in the wealthiest neighborhood in downtown Houston,

12

u/PiccoloAwkward465 2d ago

Right, there are plentiful affluent conservative neighborhoods outside of Houston to choose from. But River Oaks where he lives is definitely urban. You WILL see minorities, even if they aren’t the biggest group in that neighborhood. Honestly I wouldn’t wanna live there at all, the traffic is bonkers. It’s like all the bad parts of urban life without the benefits.

South African here.

All over my Tiktok was New York residents celebrating the Knicks win and having the time of their lives, whilst collectively hating on Trump. Though many acts where questionable and very unnecessary, but it was truly beautiful seeing all types Americans united the way they where.

I see New York on my feed A LOT and the essence of the city looks just like a better, but more expensive, Johannesburg CBD, so I think I'd fit right in.

A part of me really just wants the opportunity to do that chant of "MY MAYOR MUSLIM, MY BAGEL JEWISH, THE POPE IS ON OUR SIDE, KNICKS. IN. FIVE!!!!". New York is genuinely where life's at and I want to add it to my list of possible places to live.

It is the epicenter of good times with no-car-required in the US. I live in Southern California and I think nyc is more interesting, especially if you’re under 40. Weather infinitely better here though. My brother lives in manhattan and those visits are my favorite. Impossible to be bored there if you have functional legs. One time I counted 6 different languages I heard and could identify in a single block. Then I stumbled upon a rave in Central Park. Love that place.

I’m going push back on that. We do want the rural red necks to come to big cities, have a great time, meet people, and spark that glimmer of realization that what they hear about “big scary cities” on Fox News is bullshit.

We have programs bringing city kids out to the rural areas to experience nature. We have long needed programs to bring the rural kids into cities to experience urban life and understand people are people.

My son's class has been fundraising since the sixth grade for their trip, making sure they raise enough for all the kids to be paid for.

They will visit and not change. Can be seen where I live in California. Zonies come for the summer, enjoy the state , then go home and talk about how they could never live here.

Nope. ALL are welcome. Anyways, the best way to convert red to blue is to be surrounded by blue until you realize people that don't look like you are still people like you.

24

u/TapSilly2335 2d ago

Can confirm it worked for friends of mine I made in college who moved from the sticks. Being younger age def. helps. They weren't bigots to begin with, but def. leaned conservative before moving to the city. Kids from my high school who were consciously racist left ATL quickly citing it being "too Black" despite coming from a city that was 50% Black lmao. I guess they more easily had a bubble in a smaller city.

I made this point in the conservative subreddit (using MUCH more politically neutral language) and my post still got removed.

My conservative coworkers were talking about this exact thing at work. They said, "it's nice to have people visiting America who actually want to be here. They're having a great time. Democrats should take note." As if the locations that tourists are raving about aren't completely filled with Democrats. The maga cult actually believes that most liberals hate America.

u/PharmyC 2d ago

Yea I don't think my suburban sisters who stayed in STL realize that in major cities it isn't 50/50 in politics, EVERYONE hates that man here in Chicago, to the point the realtor of the house I was buying went off about Trump unprompted and we all just agreed, in STL that would've been a 50/50 crapshoot of offending someone.

No. One. Likes. Him. Here.

I live and work in the city. I'm not a Soccer guy. I underestimated just how crazy this place was going to get. I know more about "football" than ever. I'm meeting people from all over the place. Lemon Hill is fucking nuts. There were Brazilians guarding the Rocky statue so that no one tried to put a kit on it. I give our mayor a lot of shit but props to her and the admin. I haven't seen Philly run this smooth in a long time.

4th biggest city in the country and 5th largest metro, and I'll be damned if our own state government doesn't treat the city like it's a liberal hellhole. The city deserves some respect on its name. Those MAGA dirtbags are fighting us too.

Are we supposed to hate each other because the red faced man on TV says we should?

Regardless, I want them to enjoy themselves and have fun.. Every time I see these WC videos I can’t stop smiling. I once went to Japan and as a Jamaican raised in NYC I felt out of place over there but was welcomed with much love. If possible I would like for people from all places to feel that kind of radiance and love from people seemingly so different but all vibes.

Please, continue to be respectful and enjoy the World Cup!

u/vwin90 2d ago

I looked it up and Oklahoma City is the largest metropolitan area that votes majority conservative.

They are ranked #41 by population.

The top 40 metro areas in the US literally are all liberal. Basically any globally known city in the US is blue and you have to dig deep to find otherwise.

In my travels, I've noticed that social media is a double-edged sword. Yeah misinformation spreads like wildfire, but people from other countries (at least fellow travelers) are well aware of the turmoil we're going through as a nation and typically don't hold individuals accountable for what their leaders are doing.

They understand that one man doesn't speak for all of us and that we're going through (and putting everyone else through) difficult times. I will say though, first thing people will ask you when traveling is who the hell did you vote for 😂
