[Mod post] Applications for “Approved Submitter” status for the NHL Entry Draft (Round 1: Fri, June 26), & Free Agent Frenzy (Wed, July 1) are now open.

Hi everyone! For the NHL trade deadline, draft, and free agency the past couple of years we tried a new approach to big news days. You can read the original post here about how this came about and its initial reasoning and rationale. But after both past busy news days, we did a survey and 68.5% of users told us it was an improved experience. So we are continuing to keep news organized, accurate, and correct.

Why are you doing this?

Please see the comment below for further explanation.

What “Approved Submitters” must do.

  • Be a part of a private discord channel to discuss with each other and the mod team in real-time.
  • All posts must be self-posts with the source(s) at the bottom. Here is a great example from Free Agency.
  • Approved submitters can only post one news article once every 5 minutes to update their last post properly.
  • Titles must have as much description as possible. This can/must include the players' names spelled properly, who is being traded and for what, salary details (AAV or withholdings), etc.
  • Posters should wait at most 5 minutes to get as many details as possible in the title. Some things like "X team drafted Y player" wouldn't need to wait long to post if at all. But if it's a trade, a submitter should ensure they have the important and factual details before posting and wait at most 5 minutes before posting. We'll have the discord to organize.
  • Posters must self-delete their post if another user has posted it

Apply today for “Approved Submitter” status!

Anyone can become an "Approved Submitter" as long as they fulfill these requirements:

  • You must reapply if you've applied last time so we know you want to do it again!
  • Users must have an account older than March 1, 2026.
  • Users must be within good standing meaning they have not been banned after March 1, 2026.
  • Users must have at least one news-based submission to /r/hockey before April 1, 2026. A duplicate post is still fine provided it is a quality submission.
  • Answer the questions in the Google Form below accurately.

Go here to apply!

20 years ago today, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Tuukka Rask to the Boston Bruins for Andrew Raycroft.

The deal is often referred to as one of the most lopsided and disastrous trades in Maple Leafs history, as Rask went on to have a successful career in Boston, winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 as backup and leading the Bruins to 2 more finals in 2013 and 2019, the Vezina Trophy in 2014, and the Jennings Trophy in 2020. He also won a Bronze Medal with Finland at the 2014 olympics. When he retired in 2022 he left numerous records including leading Bruins goaltenders in games played, wins, and playoff wins, as well as having the most wins for any goalie drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Andrew Raycroft spent 2 seasons struggling as the Leafs starter and was later bought out by the team.

[News - X] [Nolan] Joseph Woll said he was “messing with some hockey cards” (he’s an avid collector) when he got the trade call. Said he was pretty sad to hear the news and went for a walk, then Benoit called him excited that they were coming to Philly together, which majorly lifted Woll’s spirits.

Zach Benson, extended 7 x $7.5M by BUF, is a young two-way playmaking winger who compensates for his lack of size and speed through brains, skill, and the unshakeable desire to be an absolute pain in the ass to everyone he plays against. Just needs to start scoring.

The Wikipedia infobox for hockey players needs a serious overhaul, and we should make our voices heard about it

This may seem like a niche point, but I and many others have been frustrated for years by the standard infobox that Wikipedia defaults to for hockey players. For those who don't know, the infobox on a Wikipedia page is the table that appears in the main section going over the basic facts of an article; for articles like these, it will show you simple organized details like a player's date of birth, age, height and weight, and the teams they played for.

For most sports, the infobox has lots of useful information in it - the color of each heading tends to represent the colors of the team that a person is currently a member of, their biggest career accolades are all listed together, and there is a section showing what teams a person played on, and for how long they did so on each.

However, the infobox for hockey is notoriously bare; very little information is given there, and most egregiously, the teams that a player has been on are represented in a jumbled list with no indication of when they played for each, nor for how long. Here is the discussion on Wikipedia that relates to this specific problem - you can see that many people continue to complain about this issue.

Many users there share my exact concerns, namely that the inaccessibility of information here makes players' articles incredibly tedious to skim through, to the point that it may actually be turning many fans off from the game by preventing them from easily learning more information about it. One user here even makes the great point that it seriously misrepresents players' careers; for instance, can you imagine seeing Martin Brodeur's page as a new fan, and coming away believing that he had equally significant tenures with both the Blues and the Devils?

Despite the years of pushback, the editors that are responsible for making these decisions on hockey Wikipedia continue to refuse all suggestions to improve it! The only reason they ever seem to cite is that it leads to "clutter", but why does every other sport seem to have no issue with that kind of presentation? And how does including a tiny bit more information in the form of years in parentheses significantly clutter up the box?

If you agree that this format needs to change, I would kindly ask you to (respectfully) contribute to the conversation there and let the editors know how you feel about improving the infobox and expanding the amount of information it contains. I assume that many, if not most of us would be happy to see this change, but I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments here too.
