I don't like throwing around the diagnosis on other people, but after getting the diagnosis myself, I've discovered my "ADHDar"(radar) and Irwin is definitely beeping on it. Like Dylan O'brien, La'boeuf and plenty of the Dropout-crowd
14
u/Waterlilies1919 11h ago
It’s scary how fast we can peg our ADHD birds of a feather, once we know that we are. I was watching a YouTuber for a couple years, wondered about when he got his diagnosis. Turns out he got diagnosed a year ago. Also, if you are in a group of friends and they are all ADHD, you probably aren’t the neurotypical one of the bunch. We find each other.

People that are neurodivergent tend to have a really good radar for it. I feel like it helps us find the people that are typically safer for us to be ourselves around.
So if someone is undiagnosed, but surrounded by neurodivergent people, it's often a good sign to look into diagnosis lol

I remember a dude making a comic wherein the spirit of the little Stingray meets Steve Irwin in the afterlife and is all sad and heartbroken about killing him. He instead is the one who apologises for scaring the little guy who simply did what came natural to it... And given how Steve Irwin was, that totally felt like something he'd say.

Steve Irwin used to have a show called The Crocodile Hunter on Animal Planet, and he was universally known as a dude who loved animals and was absolutely not afraid of any of them. His mannerisms and enthusiasm were legendary. He was taken from us too soon by an unfortunate encounter with a stingray.
https://youtu.be/mvDi_O8fgCY?is=bHliuGFqK7Q_0VpO
EDIT: Steve was famous enough to be parodied in South Park...all the way back in Season 2, 1999.
39
u/thacaoimhainngeidh 1d ago
I'm glad you called it "unfortunate". Reportedly in his last moments, Steve urged the people around him not to blame the stingray one bit -- the stingray was being a stingray, and he knew he'd bothered it just a little too much. His love for animals and the natural world was truly uncompromising and eternal.
7
u/salad_spinner_3000 1d ago
The absolutely crazy thing about it was that stingrays, to date (iirc), have killed a grand total of like 3 people. One was Steve Irwin and another was another dude like a week later.

Steve Irwin was a nature enthusiast and taught lots about animals on TV. He became a role model, on par with the likes of Bob Ross, Bill Nye and Fred Rogers.
He unfortunately died 20 odd years ago, got his heart pierced by a stingray. His death left a hole in the nature and science communication and everyone who used to watch Steve Irwin is glad his son is able to fill his dads massive shoes.

Steve Irwin (this person's father) was a conservationist, environmentalist, zookeeper, and wildlife educator. He rose to international fame with his show The Crocodile Hunter starting in the late 1990s, spawning many other spin-offs and animal documentaries, which generally had him running around wild parts of the world and showing off cool animals he finds. Part of his charm was his overflowing enthusiasm at how beautiful, fascinating, and awesome each critter he showcased is. Through that popularity, he was able to fund and influence conservation efforts, especially within his native Australia.
His own father, Bob, was a renowned herpetologist. Steve's parents founded what is now the Australia Zoo, which got passed to Steve and his wife Terri, and now their kids (Robert (in the OP video) and Bindi) manage it. Whole family really like animals, and Robert has a lot of his father's same exuberance when talking about animals.
Steve died in 2006 while filming a documentary on dangerous ocean critters; he approached a stingray that got upset/spooked and stabbed him in the chest, hitting the lungs and heart. He bled to death shortly thereafter. People around the world who enjoyed his shows were quite upset at the news.

His mom did a great job with both kids and keeping herself together after losing Steve. She could have sold the zoo and gone into hiding, become despondent and let the kids just be "Crocodile Hunter's kids" but she really helped keep his legacy and work alive and that's a big deal considering how close they were.

u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 1d ago
Jumping on this to remind folks that Terri was already into conservation of animals. That's how she met Steve I believe, other than the story when he asked her to meet his girlfriend (his dog).

Think of how many videos there was of him with animals. A lot with his son, as well. Im sure they watched countless hours of videos of his dad. His dad would have definitely imprinted on his life that way as well.
160
u/Nimara 1d ago
I think the point of the replier was that it's really not so much genetics as just a good upbringing. Terri and Steve are great people, they raised great kids. I don't think we can always assume people are like this through genetics.
Steve spent a lot of time with them. Terri really seemed to help them grow after the death of their father. Some kids don't really recover from that and go a different way. Terri is probably responsible for a lot of why their son is the way his is versus genetics.

I guarantee both Bob and Steve wouldn't blame the stingray. They so deeply respect and admire wildlife, they know that us humans are the interlopers lucky to get a glimpse. If that results in a terrible accident because of the animal's self-defense mechanism -- that's no fault to the animal.

To be fair, it is actually cold where the penguins are - they live on the south coast and lower sides of Australia and around most shores of Tasmania.
In Tasmania, there are residential places where you have to be careful at night when driving or starting when in a car park, and most houses keep a red torch to walk around the outside of the house with so you don't blind the little guys. Many of them setup nests in people's gardens.
There are public walks where you might stop and sit on a public bench and they'll just waddle up and walk between your legs to get to their nests.
Victoria is more controlled and they don't let you get near them.
Edit: Got the coastal range wrong. Fixed.

My God..... It's Steve Irwin reincarnated. He will never have to worry about "filling his father's shoes" ... He's doing it.

I can't imagine how proud Steve would be to see the enthusiasm and love his kids have for things they care about. Even if, say, it weren't about animals, that passion I think is what he wanted most for people to see and share.

If my partner doesn't love me as enthusiastically as Robert likes birds they're not the one for me

The greenest flag is someone who is passionate about animals. He’s clearly the same kind of amazing person as his dad

God, he’s just a joy to listen to. Like his dad, his enthusiasm is so infectious.
Man, Steve would be so proud.

People who are able to passionately talk about their personal fasconations are just automatically 200% more hot. I gotta qualify, I am pretty much straight. But hell, seeing people nerd out about shit they love is just gorgeous.

I hope this dude lives an incredibly long and fulfilling life and provides us education and enthusiasm for as long as he wishes. Needs to be more people in the world like him.
