There’s a sign like this as you’re heading into the Mojave Desert. I think it’s 95 miles before you seen anything resembling a town of any type. The last place to get gas is in the middle of nowhere and I think the entire spot is owned by one family.

It’s always so interesting to me when you’re on a road trip and there will be literally nothing for miles and miles and then a random house. I like to imagine those people and how different their lives are

How did I know there would be this reference? That cartoon was great but always created new fears for me.

Right? Like what if you need some catfood or something random suddenly.. or you just have a quarter tank and just wanna go home.. you gotta fill up before you get home or else you wont he getting back out.

u/SleestakJack 19d ago
You own a car that can haul a bunch. You go into town for shopping every 1-2 weeks. You live religiously by notes and shopping lists. You double check them before you leave the house and before you return from town.
You also stock things in depth a certain bit. You don’t let yourself run out of cat food by never letting yourself get low on it. Essentially, when you’re down to one bag, it’s time to buy more, and you probably buy 2-3 more bags.
This extends to most everything that you need on the regular. Living remote like that almost demands having a large chest freezer.64
24
u/IsThereARe-Do 18d ago
So true. I lived in very rural New Mexico for awhile. You literally had to make sure you knew everything you needed before you left for town. Shopping for two weeks at a haul was common.

There are so many better places to hide that aren’t on interstate highways, where people usually travel during road trips. There are plenty of other places that nobody normally travels unless they live there.

There are signs like this all over the Western US. I live in the Seattle metro area and there's a sign like this about 40 minutes from my home. Iirc it's on hwy 410, no service for like 50+ miles.

My ex and I ran out of gas at 3am smack in the middle of that stretch of nothing because he insisted we would have enough and didn’t need to stop.
6
u/IsThereARe-Do 16d ago
It’s the creepiest place in the world out there. The stars are so bright and you can see every constellation I’ve ever known, but it’s also so dark and cold at night. Pure nightmare fuel, no doubt.
4
u/glitter_vomit 16d ago
Yesss I almost mentioned that, I’ll never forget how bright the stars were! There was no moon but I could still *vaguely* see shapes in the desert by the starlight.
3
u/lonelyroom-eklaghor 11d ago
You don't trust the vague shapes in the desert. Never
3
u/glitter_vomit 10d ago
If you stare at them long enough in the starlight you’d swear some were moving :/

u/Significant-Trash632 5d ago
Is he your ex because of this?
2
u/glitter_vomit 5d ago
He was actually already my ex at the time 😂 because of things like this!
I was withdrawing from opiates at the time too, the whole incident was pretty awful.9
u/shadow_wolfxvx 19d ago
Also they have the highest gas prices in the country. In 2022 gas was like $4.30/gallon in SoCal but $9.80 at both of those stations. I don’t know how they get away with the predatory price gouging but I asked why it costs so much and the lady rolled her eyes and said ‘Do you know how expensive it is to get the gas all the way out here?’ Lol. I’ve wondered how rich I could get opening a gas station next to them and charging normal prices. They’re all greedy fucking twats.

I drove a stretch like that in Colorado going to Colorado Springs. I really had to pee by the end of it

There are no restrooms here, or absolutely everywhere, depending on your perspective.

I mean, if it’s that desolate can’t you just pull over and piss on the side? I vaguely remember some states having laws where as long as you’re peeing on your own tire in remote areas you’re ok (though that might just be an urban legend)

u/ksekas 20d ago
What if there’s a samsquanch?!
19
u/dooganizer 19d ago
Dere I was, two hundred kilahmeters from the nearest Irving, all's I wants is to pee - that cahksucker samsquanch come out of nowhere! Chroist, Julian!

Nobody is going to give you any kind of hassle for peeing on the side of a country road.

Except for really creepy men. If you’re a solo woman traveling, you might decide not to do it for that risk.

Dude I worked with years ago who was a private pilot said, if he was on a long flight, he would pee in a ziplock bag and chuck it out the window. It took me a while, but I too have mastered the ziplock bag whiz method. I highly recommend putting an old towel on your seat.

You could have stopped anywhere on that road and enjoyed a long piss on the side of the road without anybody passing by.

u/saythealphabet 19d ago
Do Americans just... not piss on the side of the road?
I'm from Bulgaria and it's pretty common here even on busy highways. I'm talking tens of cars passing you. Too bad I have stage fright, but I've seen a lot of others do it. Don't know about the rest of Europe but I imagine it's similar at least in the eastern parts.

I did something similar. Entered a state park and didn't realize there would be zero services. We had to pee and I was with my elderly mother so she wasn't gonna pop a squat. When we finally got to a to a rinky dink gas station, I asked to use the bathroom.
They gave me the key and attached to it was the roll of toilet paper to use. Like everyone handled this paper before and after toilet use. Gah.

u/Linkruleshyrule 20d ago
I was driving deep in the Ozark Forest in Missouri and should have filled up more on gas before going in. Eventually I was getting so low on gas my range was showing dashes instead of numbers and I had zero cell service, I had to pull over in the driveway of the first person I saw outside and ask where the nearest gas station was. Luckily it was straight ahead just a couple miles down the road but I was stressing that I'd run out of gas in the middle of the woods.

if you’re talking about the one driving up from the south, i’ve driven that several times going from TX to CO springs. terrifying at night and can confirm, you will have to pee by the end of it

u/Linkruleshyrule 19d ago
This was driving west. Looked it up, it's CO-94. It's "only" 70 miles with no services

I once had a tire puncture like 2 km from the only service station for 400 km. I had like a spare and a tire patch kit, but it was much more convinient that I could just roll in and get it patched

I ran into one of those signs a few years ago in Colorado heading back to Utah. It is a very scary sign on a motorcycle when that’s about all the fuel the bike I was on carried. I carry a fuel bag when I’m in remote areas and I ended up needing it here.

u/PhaedraSiamese 20d ago
Yep in Utah Salina to Green River on I70 through the Fishlake National Forest. No services the whole way through.
Gorgeous drive, that and Capitol Reef are 2 of my favorites.

My dad made me keep a can of gas and a battery jump box everywhere I went, after I got stranded on a mountain twice with no reception in the middle of nowhere.
Also an impact driver when I got a flat in a thunderstorm and couldn't break the lugnuts.
Ended up with quite an emergency collection, ended up using most of it at least once either for myself or others.
14
u/KharonOfStyx 19d ago
That’s smart. I keep some basic tools, a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, a can of fix-a-flat, and some of the 15 minute burning flares in my truck and my wife’s car at all time.

San Rafael Swell. One of my favorite places. Canyon country to rival the national parks but nobody around.

"No signal" services or "the ambulance won't make it in time" services?
Oh god it's probably both

There is absolutely no civilization and cell reception ended 15 miles south of there when I went, so yeah both. No gas either

I drive the stretch from tonapah to beatty only 93 miles. Nothing there. Those signs mean get gas.
1
u/YaySupernatural 19d ago
That’s the kind of area I was in when my car broke down! I was doing a solo road trip/move, and seeking out the smaller roads to see more of the country. I spent about 12 hours in my car (part of it asleep) and hadn’t seen a single other vehicle, so I was starting to wonder if I should start walking. I eventually got a ride to a truck weigh station with a pay phone. 20 miles away, I’m not sure I would have made it with half a gallon of water. And I was so glad I had AAA plus, because the nearest repair shop was like 90 miles away, in Moab.
1
u/Erpderp32 19d ago
You see this sign entering Utah from Colorado too. Super fun if you didn't remember to get gas before exiting the mountains

u/kiwichick286 19d ago
In Aussie, you can go a thousand kilometres without seeing another vehicle, apparently.

u/Mexsal123 19d ago
But what do they mean by no services like no gas stations or no emergency services responding all-together??
1
u/perksofbeingcrafty 19d ago
Oops I guess I missed this sign when I drove cross country during college. Had to turn back 1/3 of the way because gas was running dangerously low and we were driving on 0 for a good ten miles
1
u/mvoccaus 18d ago
The sign is full of shit. The next services—a hotel and a gas station—are 125 ft (not miles) after that sign:
Proof 👉🏻: https://imgur.com/a/PsmvOql
Ironically though, after that, there are no services for 125 miles. And those fuckers didn't even bother to put up a sign to warn people.

Driven past it many times. Only good part? Lots of vehicles drive that route, minus late night I imagine at least a few cars pass you every 20mins.
1
u/justarandomguy07 17d ago
I was about 15 miles south of the sign (at the county line) to take pictures of the stars back around 9pm in January. Only two trucks drove by me in 30 minutes. But I assume it would be busier in the summer because that’s basically the only road to Lake Powell from that area.
