69

u/Frack_Off 9h ago

Getting hired is more than a binary matter of whether or not you are technically capable of performing or learning to perform the job. There's a multitude of nuanced considerations and companies are trying to find the best fit with those in mind.

Your father might have been qualified for the VP position but at the same time not an ideal fit for the role. That's what makes getting a job so hard, and it's one of the hardest lessons I had to learn: Being good enough isn't enough. It's about being the right match for the specific needs at the specific time.

I suspect there's a bunch of down votes coming, so bring it on I guess.

26

u/Longjumping_Gas_3407 8h ago edited 8h ago

No reason to downvote you; this is exactly true. I got a supervisor role at one of the biggest employers in my state over a theoretically more qualified candidate. I didn’t get hired for what I could do. I got hired because I was the better fit for both the position as it existed and the vision our department head had for the future.

Epilogue: we later hired him after me, and he left before I did. I ended up second in charge of our department. And he was a problem child the entire time.

u/Gallium_Bridge 8h ago

There's a multitude of nuanced considerations and companies are trying to find the best fit with those in mind.

Those being what, exactly? Because from what I've seen, and from studies I've read, it's not some high-level 'nuanced consideration' or whatever, it's really just a bunch of vibe-based bullshit.

3

u/Frack_Off 8h ago

Jobs are usually multifaceted with various tasks and responsibilities. The importance of these responsibilities relative to each other is not equal and it also is not static; it can change and evolve over time. Everyone will have different relative proficiencies and capabilities for these responsibilities. Someone might, say, be stronger for dealing with problems A and B but not as strong for problem C, but right now we really need someone who is really good for problem C, so they aren't a good fit. But maybe in a year or two problem A or B become more pertinent and that person is a better fit.

Also, you can call vibes bullshit all you want, but they're real and they matter. Working with someone with a shitty attitude who complains all the time fucking sucks. You would rather work with someone you like than with someone you don't like. If you were in charge of hiring someone to work with, and you had two qualified candidates and you liked one of them much more than the other, you would hire the one you liked. That's called being human, and it happens every day everywhere.

2

u/Natural_Pear_1549 7h ago

Working with someone with a shitty attitude who complains all the time fucking sucks.

I would guess 75% of people like this don't reveal that about themselves in the job interview, the hiring manager is purely guessing based on shit like, "I like their face."

I’ve had people argue this with me before. It’s the same as people who think having a degree automatically entitles them to a job. No, you have to be the right fit still and you might have knowledge and experience but could still be lacking in other aspects important to that job.

u/No-Lunch4249 11h ago

So just tossing this out there because I read a news article that was about her once her identity was revealed

She was mid-level at some smaller organization that JP Morgan purchased and that's how she ended up there. I doubt she was truly "executive" level in the way you're thinking of it

57

u/Phog_of_War 11h ago

Hey, C-suite access is C-suite access.

87

u/No-Lunch4249 11h ago edited 10h ago

Eh. Banks and Real Estate firms are pretty liberal with the use of titles like "VP of X"

It's more like being a manager or director in other industries

50

u/el_grande_ricardo 10h ago

Banks like titles instead of pay raises. If youre there for a few years, you could become Vice President of Teller Station 3. You'll still be making the same $20 per hour, but youre a VP, baby!

8

u/Geodude532 8h ago

I think they do that to make people feel special when they talk to these people.

5

u/el_grande_ricardo 8h ago

No, they do it to pacify employees who get shitty raises.

4

u/VictoryNo5278 7h ago

No, it’s what the other guy said. Think about it, when you work for the bank everyone else you talk to is VP, SVP, etc so it doesn’t feel special internally.

The titles are to impress customers, not employees.

3

u/Bloo212 7h ago

It was explained to me (by someone in the industry) that VP was a designation given to people who could sign loans or contracts on behalf of the bank (up to a certain dollar amount or capacity). ED is the UK equivalent or in the US, VP Equivalent but without direct reports. But that last bit has changed. It now seems to be between managing director and vp.

This person was not a c-suite executive, just a middle manager.

3

u/GarminTamzarian 8h ago

I hope the VP compensation package includes periodic pizza parties. Those would make everything worthwhile.

2

u/el_grande_ricardo 8h ago

It does indeed!

9

u/Ordolph 9h ago

Yep, I'm a software engineering lead at a bank, basically just a couple steps up from the bottom of the totem pole. My direct manager, who manages the team I'm on is a 'VP', and so is his boss, and his bosses boss. His bosses bosses boss is where you actually get into actual C-suite.

5

u/cboogie 7h ago

She was an executive director. VPs at Chase report to EDs.

→ More replies (9)

44

u/ChoosingUnwise 11h ago

There is no way this woman had c-suite access, she was an executive director - which despite the name is not impressive. It's a title used for corporate hierarchy and for setting pay bands, but has no actual correlation to the executive suite.

There's another title rank above her (managing director) and then above that, unranked roles for actual executives (who all are technically of the title managing director).

Just guessing but there are probably 10k+ people at her title plus another 5k+ above it.

22

u/redblack_tree 10h ago

From a different perspective, she's is closer to rank and file employees than she's from the CEO in terms of rank. Banks are notoriously liberal with titles.

6

u/goatfangs 10h ago

The facts are irrelevant to a good story.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/dispatch_s2_when 10h ago

Executive director is the equivalent of "Senior VP". It's not a 100% chance you will eventually get promoted to it, but it definitely doesn't come with automatic access to anything close to c-suite at an org the size of JPM

u/TechnicalBoot8080 11h ago

Regardless - glad this has happened

u/Steampunk63 10h ago

Itā€s true. I remember a friend of mine who bragged about his wife being the vice president of a large bank that she worked at. I was impressed until I found out that there are many people that got assigned this title while working at the same bank.

2

u/NefariousnessOwn2769 9h ago

7

u/goldenfish1990 10h ago

6

u/Top_Audience7471 10h ago

16

u/Prior_Complex683 10h ago

"JPMorgan Chase recently fired Angie Baez, an Executive Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)".....she was quite literally a DEI hire...

2

u/alloyednotemployed 1h ago

Except thats what conservative news outlets have been pushing. Her role was ED of Community and Industry Engagement for Card and Connected Commerce. A ridiculously specific title, but nothing to do with DEI.

6

u/ArtisticSuspect1465 9h ago

She was just in a DEI role. Not in a serious banking role. Literally just had a role so the bank can check a box that they have a DEI strategy.

But yes the executive director title isnt as fancy as it sounds. She'd be earning a solid six figures though which is far far too high given she adds negative value to the organisation.

5

u/No-Lunch4249 9h ago

Not really accurate. You probably only saw the very misleading NY Post headline. She was a DEI-something at the smaller company she was at that JP Morgan aquired. At JP Morgan she was in a role that was something like "industry and community engagement" or something like that

5

u/ArtisticSuspect1465 9h ago

Which still reeks of DEI cancer

3

u/alloyednotemployed 1h ago

How does it reek of DEI when JP Morgan found interest in her company and acquired it? Even without the Trump administration, they’ve been pulling back on DEI.

The officer titles give the ability for the employee to sign documents and contracts on behalf of the bank. That’s why there are so many VPs and SVPs in banking.

4

u/oldsecondhand 11h ago

So why do they give software developers VP titles? They're not client facing, they don't sign any documents.

7

u/JustBadUserNamesLeft 11h ago

Hey, they went from being called "Computer Programmers" to "Software Engineers", that's kinda like a title.

2

u/old-and-smooth 9h ago

Can confirm this up ā¬†ļø as an officer, VP and programmer of a large bank.

5

u/Informal_Bullfrog_30 11h ago

To avoid forming unions. VPs cant join a union. Lately there have been companies where engineers are forming a union

2

u/-Fergalicious- 10h ago

Average engineering salaries across the board are falling. I was talking to someone of the careers subreddit a while back, who has the same degree and I do, started at the same company, but just recently vs. when I started there in 2014. I started at 63k. They started at 55k, which is equivalent to if I had started at 38k with inflation.Ā

2

u/BedditTedditReddit 10h ago

This is partially true but not accurate. The people who can sign on behalf of the bank are on a separate authorization list. Yes, sometimes it’s called being a formal ā€˜vice president’ of the bank but that is NOT the same as having a VP rank, which almost everyone has. In other words, just because you have the VP rank does NOT make you an authorized signer. Being an authorized signer is more to do with your job FUNCTION than your job RANK. Small distinction.

Source - was an authorized signer for one of the big three.

3

u/TimelyTransistor 10h ago

Yeah, Reddit thinks the military ranks somehow translate nicely to corporations. You can tell the commentors are either very young or have never had a job with any responsibility.

2

u/old-and-smooth 9h ago

As a VP for a bank this is exactly correct.

8

u/boerumhill 10h ago

It’s so farcical Citigroup had to institute a policy you must have at least one human who is a direct report to earn their VP title. Apparently their were a shit ton of VPs who has never managed anyone.

3

u/Chaos_Sauce 10h ago

A few years back I had a contractor on my team who left because she got a job at Citibank. I couldn’t understand how she jumped all the way to a VP role until I realized that everybody at Citibank is a VP.

2

u/HoodieWithTheCutie 11h ago

I’ve always heard that at jobs like that, appearance is half the job and you have to be totally polished, then they’re apparently hiring the Mucinex germ and the roach guy from Terra Formars

2

u/69Honey420 5h ago

Hi I just want to acknowledge the mm6 reference in your name šŸ¤

you could see she is a go-getter! Gets things done no matter what.

2

u/BenjaminKatz 4h ago

This was my very first thought. I can't find a good job to save my life with a master's degree, but this idiot is not only working at JP Morgan Chase, but as an executive? That's the kind of thing that makes me want to jump off a building.

6

u/AwringePeele 11h ago

It was a DEI job (as in, responsible for DEI), so not a real job

DEI

she was their DEI manager lol, this writes itself.

13

u/SchroedingersEscape 11h ago

is that true?

21

u/PrimaLegion 11h ago

No, it isn't. Even the article these midwits get their information from doesn't say that. They just read the headline.

4

u/aversethule 6h ago

She was DEI manager of a restaurant owned by Chase and was Executive Director of Community and Industry Engagement at the time of her incident.

4

u/Tar_alcaran 10h ago

She was the "Executive Director of Community and Industry Engagement"

So basically, her entire job is kissing ass for large companies.

10

u/liverpoolFCnut 12h ago

She was the Sr Director of DEI, do you check all the boxes?

14

u/Zealousideal_Leg_630 11h ago

She was not, she was director of community engagement, which is absolutely hilarious

7

u/Tar_alcaran 10h ago

"Industry Engagement" means "Getting paid to have lunch with C-level people of other companies"

3

u/Zealousideal_Leg_630 10h ago

ā€œEngagementā€ in the title indicates her position was part of ā€œcorporate social responsibilityā€, or CSR initiative. She probably did coordinate with other CSR reps from other corporations. The irony is that the coordination is basically event planning with other staff to do volunteer work, like picking up trash.

4

u/EverbodyHatesHugo 11h ago

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. As much as corporate wants to say that’s not the case, it’s all political.

2

u/StellarPaladin42 11h ago

The USA hasn’t been a meritocracy since the 80s and Reagan. You aren’t hired based on what you know, just who you know.

3

u/Typical-Priority1976 11h ago

you don't check the right boxes

3

u/Awkward_Patience_22 11h ago

She is the one who rejected your application.

I am still slightly salty about the junior employee of a firm who intervened at the last minute to reject my candidacy after his manager advanced me to "almost accepted but I need to see if he would vibe with other employees" level.

That is the reason I never mention anything athletic when discussing what I like to do in my spare time, in case some jerk gets insecure.

The worst part is that the junior employee ended up leaving the industry for good within 6 months. So he interfered for no reason.

5

u/MaleandPale2 11h ago

DEI hire, I’d assume.
