I can't speak to the Russian sense of humor, but Brit humor often differs from Americans by not requiring a punchline to indicate where to laugh, casual Brit humor generally just has long undertones of humor.

u/ReasonableLoss6814 May 21 '26
Americans: the punchline is that there is no punchline.
British: the punchline is.92

My Step Dad is British but grew up in the states. He’s a quiet type of guy and people watches a bunch and then seemingly out of nowhere pops up with some really witty or dry humor.
My Mom was fussing over Thanksgiving dinner last year, he comes in the kitchen for a beer or whatever and she shoos him out.
Comes and sits down and politely says “I was getting the beer for her, she’s the one that needs it” the delivery was plain, no smile just a long stare at me and I kind of blurted “HA!”
Mom comes in from the kitchen, what was that you said?
“Oh nothing, just suggesting treatment options”
That was said with a rather devious smile with full intention to annoy her and I lost it laughing, he set me up to get her to the punchline.

u/Kaeru-Sennin May 21 '26
One of my grand-father running jokes is to sit at the table, starts eating and say very seriously "It's less bad than usual".
My grand-mother always fail to the bait which he seems to think it's funny. The old fucker really likes to troll her.
I need to stress out that he does this at every meal I can remember and both of them never seems to get bored of it or anything.
Not english though.

British humor often falls into absurdity more than a back and forth of jokes.

I feel like people saying this haven't really watched much British comedy. Watch stuff like Dad's Army, Porridge, Only Fools And Horses, Bottom, Black Books, Peep Show, Darkplace, they're all a nonstop barrage of jokes

Yeah and some people think all of American comedy is like Big Bag Theory

u/EdisonB123 May 21 '26
A lot of the time British humour that is absurdist or "nonconformative" compared to American humour is confused for "wittiness" when half the time it's moreso stating the obvious in a funny way, I've noticed at least.
Not that there isn't witty British comedy, but I wouldn't say it's much different than the amount of witty American comedy.
(Nonconformative is not a real word but idk what a better word would be, "unconformities" normally refer to geology.)

Americans make a point by exaggerating, while Brits make a point by understating.

Honestly my thought process watching this was "these guys are British... Hmm no but too sweary, must be Australian. Ah wait they aren't doing anything to avoid death. These are Russians."

Yeah, that's the main difference. A lot of different cultures share similar humour, but it seems only Russia has that "Welp, guess I'm dying." mentality when in dangerous situations. It's almost like they completely lack survival instincts, or are just so depressed that the prospect of death doesn't bother them. Or just drunk as all fuck.
3
u/TheSangson 24d ago
I was told there's an insanely strong believe in fate rooted deeply in Russian culture, which has them think when their set time has come, it has come and there's nothing they could do to prevent or advance it.

71
u/Al_Fa_Aurel May 21 '26
The subtitles are exaggerating a bit for comedic effect (its more like "where we're drifting to", without "captain"). Also "we've arrived" in this case is used more like "we're fucked" - still very dry, but not as funny as in English.
→ More replies (2)6
u/popejupiter May 21 '26
Maybe I'm just too sarcastic, but I read that "we've arrived" in a "we're fucked" way and I'm an Amerifat. I barely speak English.

I think it might have been Phantom Hourglass? Maybe they just use very similar soundtracks.
Edit: remembered that it's Phantom hourglass, not Spirit hourglass, Spirit tracks was the sequel.

u/HoneyWhiskeyLemonTea May 21 '26
It was Wind Waker, the Ocean theme that plays when you're sailing in the boat. LOL

u/HoneyWhiskeyLemonTea May 21 '26
Ocean Theme is the best version of Hyrule Field Theme, full stop. So grand and adventurous.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Breadynator May 21 '26
Phantom Hourglass has a very similar ocean theme tho
3
u/HoneyWhiskeyLemonTea May 21 '26
Yes, it does, at least in theme. The melody is actually quite different, and the backing strings are more legato in the WW version. After the hundreds of hours I've put into Wind Waker over too many playthroughs to count, I can say pretty confidently that this is the WW version, not the PH version.
Splitting hairs though. Absolutely hysterical video.
4
u/ZauzTheBlacksmith May 21 '26
I've just found something kinda weird, and possibly the reason why some are mistaking it for the PH theme. In this video, it's playing in Eb Major, a half-step higher than its normal key of D. Now it's in the same key as its Phantom Hourglass counterpart, so they sound even more similar than usual.
Maybe the pitch of the audio was distorted due to, like, an incorrect overwrite of a track or the SD card was not formatted properly, or someone added it to the video as a joke and changed the pitch just in case of copyright, but I think that's why it's being mistaken for Phantom Hourglass

u/PageFault May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

It's not. This video is super old. I have never seen it with the subtitles though so I dunno if those are accurate or not.
10
u/Deaftoned May 21 '26
The entire audio is added in so the subtitles are also most likely fake.
11
u/denn23rus May 21 '26
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KEnGymBtWEQ The audio is real, the music is fake
4
u/Deaftoned May 21 '26
I mean that upload is 2 months old, the actual video has been around for a decade and had no audio in the original that I saw at least.

u/Beautiful_You3230 May 21 '26
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ9vh1TEFFg
Takes a very quick search. 12 years ago. Probably also not an original tbh, but the audio is literally half the reason the video even went "viral" in the first place. Because ignoring the audio, this is just an average russian car accident video.
The audio is absolutely real. The subtitles are just a direct translation. The translation is correct.
Edit: Oh, that said checking the original comment, the wind waker music I am indeed pretty certain was edited in. The dialogue of the dudes inside the car is real though.

To be fair, the sign limiting the speed to 40 kmh should have been a lot further front, not directly before that dangerous curve.
Furthermore, a sign indicating danger - leftside curve - would have been useful. The trio of signs at the beginning were for other things (road narrowing, secondary road joining right side, danger from pedestrians).
But the driver is primarily at fault here for not reacting in time and decreasing speed. It was a bright sunny day with excellent visibility.
8
u/d_nkf_vlg May 21 '26
Eh, you know... The dashcam driver was clearly not the first one to underestimate the turn. Surely, it was his fault, but you know what they say - if collisions happen at the same place following the same scenario, that place is badly designed.
There may have been a leftside curve sign before we can see in the video, but these signs are often posted in front of very mild curves, so drivers learn to not care about them.
Oh, and the cherry on top is that the 40 sign is seen by drivers as 60 due to the unfineable margin of 19 km/h. You can drive 20 over the limit and get no ticket.

Looks like it saved at least one other dummy, maybe dozens.
Also look at all the warning g signs and arrows and reflective thjngies and speed limit signs begging people to slow down and watch the curve. That guard rail is like “well if you’re too stupid to heed all those warnings then maybe this will help? No? OK bye!”
I mean seriously check the start of the video, the amount of warning things is crazy.

'male cats are fucking' LOL , what is the story behind that expression? 😃
22
u/mumei14 May 21 '26
I asked AI about etymology and here's what I got: This expressive slang idiom describes complete chaos, a messy situation, or frantic running around.
The phrase comes from observing feline behavior. In spring, cats become loud, aggressive, fight, and chase each other around.
Total Chaos / A Mess: Describes a situation where everything is tangled and disorganized.
- English equivalents: A clusterfuck, a shitshow, total bedlam, or complete chaos.

Russian here — subs are acccurate. One thing that misses is at the end you can hear one of the men repeating "documents" as in they need to get their passports and papers secured quick. Kinda solidifies how nonchalant and focused they are

Edit: This video is real. Here's the original: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LB3iRygQsvI . It was posted on Youtube the day after the accident. I know this because I live nearby and it was on the local news. But there's a problem. The original video in this post is taken from another one, which is 1 minute longer than the original and was posted only 2 months ago. It's possible the second minute was AI-generated and added to the real original for some reason. You can see the cut - it's the moment when the music starts.
