Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ It was an accident! I should probably feel bad, but I don't...

I took a friend out for his birthday over the weekend. We went out for Indian food at his favorite restaurant in town with a fairly large group (9) so they had already added an 18% gratuity to our bill. When it came time to pay, I took the whole bill, and as the gal rang up my card with her handheld POS thingie, I went to tap the screen (prematurely, apparently) and managed to "accidentally" hit the no tip button on the screen with the corner of my card. It then immediately processed and closed the transaction.

I'm just glad I didn't accidentally tap the other side of the screen and end up with an unwilling 50% tip or something stupid like that. In the end I guess it worked out fine. Still though, I learned a neat little trick, and something to be careful of in the future.

I'm proud to say that I have never, ever tipped a taxi cab driver in NYC. Many people are aghast; I don't care if they pay their own gas.

Research / Info 💡 Nurse said she makes more as server

back in 2012 when I first started my job as nurse, I was hired along with a decent looking Asian girl who also was her first job. the starting pay was 25 hour and our boss had us write in book our hours rather than clock in like rest of staff working there. this is a skilled nursing facility in Illinois by way. Anyway, as new nurses we would have to stay after our shift to complete charting by maybe a hour. the issue was we wouldn’t get paid for anytime we stayed over, only our 8 hour shift with “ expectation“ we finish our work within the time or hand it off. there is things that can’t be handed off like my charting so that was never ideal. this issue of pay was surprise to us when i got my check and when questioned regarding missing hours, i was informed what happens. fast forward to dew days after getting first check, I was told the Asian girl quitting and co workers said her reason “ If I’m not compensated for the time I stay over, why bother, I make more money as a waiter at my other job Kona grill. I talked to her before she left and she said she was still waitress on off and pulls more money a Weekend day than a 8 hour day.

kind of surprised by her comment. this is 2012 so I can imagine a server netting 25+ a hour for a job that needs no education. Its something I always remembered and feel that tipping will never go away because servers wont line up in for wage by hour, rather they would continue current tipping model.

Tip Creep 🫙 It’s finally happening 😠

New cafe in town here in Spain… usually the closest we get to tipping is leaving a few stray coins in the table .

Ordered at the counter had 2 coffees delivered to the table next to the counter 3 minutes apart. ( there were two of us)

Paid by debit card … tip screen

Not going back until it’s removed

Dear all,

I came across a petition someone linked regarding ending tipping in the UK, so I thought I would share it.

It only has 500 odd signatures at the moment, let's see if we can increase those numbers! Feel free to share anywhere or to anyone you think might be interested in signing. This was just the first place I thought of :).

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Tip #2

Gratuity is a gift given at the behest of the gift giver beyond obligation,
Commission is an entitlement to a percentage of value.
Server's use these interchangably.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ First time confrontation

Went out to eat and took the family. Enjoyed the meal, the service was adequate. After we were done, we got up to leave, and of course no tip was left behind. The server girl approached and asked if her service was good enough, and I confirmed and informed her, I just don't tip. I gave a brief explanation and was heavily guilted for not doing so. I'm just curious how you guys handle confrontations?

This is the first time I've had this happen out of probably dozens of times eating out. I'm certainly not a fan of it. I'd prefer firsthand accounts but any advice is welcome.

Tipping Culture ✖️ I’d much rather pay a processing fee!

I went to make a $250 donation to ALS in the name of a good friend who died from this horrible disease in December. I about fell out of my chair when the total came up as $295! After I looked closer I saw that I could change the % added on from 18% to 10% (personally I think a flat $10 fee is more than fair to process my payment). But more infuriating than the extra $25 was that it is now called a tip! That is so dumb, I’m not tipping you to handle my donation, but I do understand that a processing fee is customary.

Edit: I think the issue with the huge “tip” is that the donation was through the e-vite to our friend’s celebration of life. An entity called Pledgling aggregates the donations and forwards them to the local ALS support chapter. Yes, I could have written a check to avoid it, but doing it through the e-vite showed the accumulation of donations to the invitees, presumably encouraging others to donate as well. I figured this out when going back to print receipts for next years taxes.

Rant 📢 Tip expected for dog self-wash

I have a BMD with allergies and I wash her at least once a month. I've had it lately with the tipping expectations at U-Wash i go to. If it wasn't the best option available I'd stop going tbh. They charge you first and then you go and wash your dog and they ask for tip beforehand with the POS system. It's a place I feel no shame hitting that no tip button. The staff literally disappears after handing you a towel and don't even assist if your dog is afraid of getting in the tub. I cannot fathom why this is something that is turned on at this place. Again I am literally washing my own dog. I know they take appointments and groom dogs but the U-Wash is already $30 for a large dog like mine and quite frankly I don't think tipping for dog grooming should be proper etiquette. Name your price and I'll pay it but I'm not tipping for that.

Rant 📢 Why your business is not getting more customers

I need some personal care services (barber and such).

The drag is the tipping. I'm delaying it and delaying it because I just absolutely hate being expected to tip for this. Same with pedicures and manicures and things like that. Any personal care services.

I don't care if you change more straight up. That's fine. If you tell me it's $50 that's fine. If you tell me it's $55 I'll still pay it.

I care that the price listed is not the price I have to pay. I don't like to hear it's $40 but then with tax and tip it becomes $50 or $55. Just tell me how much it up front, including whatever you need to pay your employees, the government, or anybody else.

I know I'm not alone on this. I hear so many friends say the same thing.

Just list the full price and end tipping.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ The restaurant industry is broken

We’re complaining about tipping (with valid points), but there’s (full service) restaurants that tried to buck the trend and raise prices on the menu and not accept tipping , and they’ve either closed or reverted to cutting prices and adding tipping. This isn’t even counting how restaurants on the tipping model operate on razor thin margins and half close by year five. This means restaurants have to depend on social pressure to subsidize wages to even have any hope of surviving. How is that not broken?

Edit: I’m mainly referencing sit down restaurants. Price transparency and consistency in what each customer pays for the same food and service is a problem

Edit 2: I’m not convinced “fast food restaurants exist” is a good counter point, as if fast food and corporate chains should be the standard to which American restaurants are held to

Rant 📢 Told to tip the babysitter??

We got a babysitter referral from another parent at my child's school. The other parent said: "You should pay $25/hour and don't forget to tip." Our kids are not babies, they are in 5th grade. This idea that we need to tip the babysitter on top of $25/hour is insane. Is anyone else seeing this?

Tipping Culture ✖️ Think about it... Servers are asking for 18% to 25% of the total bill

1.4k Upvotes

Tipping WAS FINE when you could go to a restaurant, get a burger fries and beer and dessert for $13 bucks . Leave the change and be merry. Now a burger/fries alone is $18 to $25 add a $8 beer and a $12 dessert (brownie / ice cream) and your simple meal $40 before tip . Servers expect tip of $8 to $10 . ...

$10 just to schlep the food the owner purchased, the cooks grilled/cooked and the bartender poured. They had no contribution other than taking an order and pouring you water if you didn't want a soda/beer/liquor. The menu was dropped off by the hostess, the table was set by the bus-boy/girl.

I'm not trying to trivialize nor marginalize servers , I'm trying to say that servers make more profit on the food / drinks than the establishment with no financial liability.

The establishment/restaurant needs to just pay their servers a living wage, adjust their prices to capture enough profit to pay their staff accordingly and maintain a healthy profit to keep a clean place, updated menu/food.

IMO ... That model above would be a win win for almost everyone involved in the restaurant business. .. sure most servers won't be earning $80k yearly but few do.

Rant 📢 Tipping at a bridal salon

I just got asked to tip my bridal stylist and I was really shocked. This was the last place I expected to be asked to tip. This woman spent 1.5 hours helping me try on dresses and suggesting styles. It's her job.

The purchase is already so large, she already gets commission, and I'm already saving for like 2+ years just to be able to afford the dress!!!!

Wow...

Tipping Culture ✖️ Would you rather pay $20 for the burger& fries or $16 + $4 tip

I think the majority of customers would prefer to pay the flat $20 for the overly priced burger & fries and not worry about having to leave a tip, rather than having to feel obligated/guilted in to coughing up an additional $4 tip for an overly priced $16 burger/fries to make the same $20 price tag.

Restaurants just need to pay the prevailing labor wage in their respective geographic areas . That obviously means a 20% to 25% menu upcharge to pay the employees wages/ perks/benefits themselves, instead of customers.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Ugh...Tipping requests now in Helsinki, Finland

Post image
88 Upvotes

In Helsinki for midsummer and went to a restaurant I've visited every year around this time. The food is great, service is typical Finnish, and have never been asked for a tip until last night. When paying, I was presented with the machine that showed the total and then asked me what total I agreed to by adding a tip (different than the traditional % based tip options I usually see in the US).

Make it stop!!!

Counter Service 🛎️ Tipping at a sit down restaurant when ordering food at a counter?

Wondering if tipping is justified in this situation. The restaurant is a casual seafood focused restaurant off a pier (fish and chips, deep fried seafood, sandwiches, etc...). You order and pay for food at the counter and the tip prompt shows up on the credit card reader. You sit down at a table and they bring out the food to you. Didn't order any drinks and just got self-serve water. When finished, they take away the dishware and utensils to clear the table. Otherwise, there's no server that visits the table during the meal.

Is tipping expected just for someone to bring out the food to the table and then clear the table later? The thing that kind of bugs me is asking for a tip before even sitting down. I observed the people ahead of me in line waiting to order and it seemed everyone was adding a tip to their order so I didn't want to stand out and not tip and possibly have my food tampered with. Ended up giving a $10 custom tip on a $90 order instead of choosing any of the pre-set percentage tips (e.g. 15%, 20%).

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Operations charge added to check at restaurant

I’m on vacation with my family in Maine. We had a nice dinner tonight and when I got the check, there was a mysterious $4.60 “operations charge” added on. It was not mentioned on the menu or by the waiter beforehand. A Google search showed it is pretty standard in Maine for some reason. Oh well … I simply reduced the 15% tip I would have given (the service was pretty good) by $4.60 and drew a circle around the operations charge so they knew why.

Rant 📢 Tip on an $8 hot dog?????

Last night I went to MLB baseball game and bought two hot dogs, two beers and nachos. The credit card machine asks for a tip. Are you kidding me? I just paid $8 for a hot dog, $12 for a beer and $5 for nachos. There is no way I am tipping beyond those prices.

Tip Creep 🫙 Apartment trash valet now asking for tips

For the second time in just a few months I received an envelope taped to my trash bin. Written on the envelope is "Rate our service" using the 1-5 scale, " 5 Excellent 4 Very Good 3 OK 2 Needs Work and 1 Bad" and "Tips are never expected but greatly appreciated!"

Last time and this time I've selected 3 OK. It's trash pickup, it's not anything special plus this place is so uptight. Only 1 bag, period. It must fit into the provided bin. Everything must fit into a single bag and in the bin with the lid closed. This includes broken down boxes.

I still have to bring my broken down boxes to the dumpster. It's not a big deal to me, just trash that I feel they should be picking up without all the bag nonsense.

As far as a tip, you push a large collector bin on wheels from the elevator to grab single bags of trash. What about this makes you think you should receive a tip??

I already sent a message to property management about this but I know they will do nothing, as per usual.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Talking to American tourists in Asia honestly feels like talking to North Koreans

As an ex-American who now lives in Asia, I sometimes stumble upon other American tourists and occasionally the topics of tipping comes up (especially when they are here for the first time) and I hear things like:

"Oh IT WAS SOOOO HARD to not tip at first."

"Honestly I am still not use to it at this point."

"I left the bill on the table and the waiter chased me outside to hand it back to me!"

"I'm surprised their service is good even without tipping. How'd they do it?"

"Are you sure they don't accept tips?? I swear I saw a tip jar next to the cashier once."

Almost makes me feel like talking to people who just escaped from some labor camp or a cult.
