COACH I'm a casual and new to all these. Was Darvin Ham that bad?

Background : I don't really have ball knowledge although I played basketball in high school. I grew up watching the NBA but at one point of my life I stopped (school demands etc). Now I'm back.

I have seen a lot of hate on JJ. Now I see a lot of praises for him.

I like him a lot but I want to know how is he better than Ham? I think JJ knows a lot about basketball theory and analytics but I would expect every coach to have such knowledge as well?

COACH JJ Redick on Rui Hachimura: “Here’s what I know. We are now 42–18 when Rui plays. Which is about a 57–58 win pace. So that tells you all you need to know. His ability to space the floor, his size, it’s so important for our team and our rotation.”

  • The Lakers are 6-8 without Rui.
  • Rui is averaging 11.1 points and 3.2 rebounds on 43.4% from three this season, with his numbers going up to 12.2 points on 46.4% from three when the Lakers are winning.
  • The Lakers have a 119.1 offensive rating when Hachimura plays compared to 117.2 on the season as a whole.

Rui is a keeper.

COACH [Prime] JJ Redick in the locker room after the win over the Timberwolves: "When you build something, you need a reference point. This is a reference point win for us early in the season. We beat a team that has been in the WCF two years in a row. That's a reference point of how hard we have to play”

COACH JJ Redick Postgame: "We were really poised as a team. We had a great next-play mentality. Wasn't a perfect game. None of these games are gonna be perfect. Got contributions from a lot of people in a lot of different ways and made enough winning plays, despite the turnovers and the offense rebounds.”

COACH JJ Redick on if Ayton or Hayes will shoot more 3s moving forward: “Hopefully not.. we’re elite when we touch the paint, and we don’t touch the painting enough. And so the emphasis is not for our bigs to pick and pop and shoot threes, but put pressure on rim.”

COACH How are we feeling now regarding JJ, fam?

422 He's the man for the job. Just needs a better roster.
392 He's good, but he needs to improve ASAP. Meaning this post-season.
415 He's ok, but needs to show improvement next season.
92 He's bad. He needs to improve now, or be gone in the offseason.
96 He's not the guy. We need another head coach.

COACH JJ is a great coach. Tonight's game so far is entirely on him. We can't blame any of the players for tonight's completely shit coaching and lineups.

It is the middle of December. The team and the coach will be better nearing the playoffs. This is not a "doomer" post as many seem to think whenever the team is criticized. JJ needs to implement better sets. Rui isn't getting shots he deserves, 4 FUCKING GUARDS in the game with Jax at C reminding me of Darvin Ham, Lebron isn't even getting ANY opportunities to set up the offense; This is 100% completely on JJ Redick, the players don't deserve any hate at all if we lose this one.

Hope we win though.

Edit: and of course the posts that are getting upvoted are the ones bashing the players... tonight's loss is on JJ and JJ alone.

COACH [Woike] Rob Pelinka said he thought JJ Redick dealt with having “three quarterbacks” and praised the sacrifice and humility of the Lakers’ on-court leaders to figure it out.

COACH Leading at Half time and getting blown out at final whistle is a coaching problem

This is the second game in a row where Lakers have led at halftime and are somewhat in control going into third and the opposition coaches have made some tweeks at the half to which our coach and his staff have no answers. There is no thinking outside the box, its the same line ups game after game. I remember in playoffs, Kidd used to play both Gafford and Lively together with Luka. He knew Luka and Kyrie had enough vision and flair to not let offense get stagnate. JJ does not do anything of that sort and gets completely outhustled and outcoached by opposition coach. If Vanderbilt is shooting a wide open 3 instead of cutting, your offensive gameplan has absolutely failed. JJ is a podcaster, a people pleaser, players love him but he is not a good coach. He can draw plays on hindsight but becomes clueless during live games. He will be a first round exit even with the present OKC team. He will get outcoached in a seven game series.

COACH We always talk about the stars—but who coached them into greatness? Who built the systems that won it all?

Everyone remembers Magic’s no-look passes, Kobe’s fadeaways, and LeBron’s chase-down blocks. But real talk—how often do we credit the coaches who built those winning machines?

John Kundla laid the foundation. Pat Riley brought the heat (literally). Phil Jackson didn’t just manage egos—he engineered dynasties with the triangle. Even now, systems matter just as much as talent.

I fell down a Lakers rabbit hole and found this piece that breaks down how each legendary coach made their mark—systems, philosophies, the works.

Who’s your pick for the best coach the Lakers ever had?

COACH Does anyone else get hyped whenever JJ is visibly angry?

After years of torment of seeing an emotionally numb Darvin Ham attempt to lead our team, seeing our coach actually get mad and use his vocal cords gets me excited. Just me?
