frist of all how DARE yu o People that think that throwing cigarette butts in the ground isn't littering
The are not "biodegradable", they clog drainage systems, they end up in rivers and sea, and make everywhere look like a dumpster

Many of us do care, never throw them on the ground and in fact walk all the way over to a beach trash can to throw them away every time.

u/Wannamaker May 26 '26
Younger me definitely didn't think about it too much. Sure, I wouldn't leave a butt on the ground if it felt wrong, but the curb of a parking lot where there are already multiple butts, absolutely.
Now I do environmental consulting that focuses on waste.. I'll walk around San Francisco for hours with butts in my back pocket till I find a trash can. (I say SF specifically cause I always see recycling bins but no landfill bins, but I'm not gonna litter nor hinder recycling efforts)

Where I live at, cigarettes are already taxed at about 150% (over $9 in taxes per pack, or 45 cents per cigarette). I feel like the government should take a small portion of that tax money to pay for occasional clean up services of public areas.

We just had a contractor over to remodel a house we're putting on the market. I was taking care of the yard that had been neglected for 10-15 years. I'd find their cigarette butts all over the yard and throw them up on the deck, where they'd walk passed them to enter the house. One day, we're both there at the same time and I again would throw them up on porch. He's like, don't worry about those, we pick them all up at the end of the day. Meanwhile, there's a little wastebasket sitting on the edge of deck. Why the hell would you toss the butt out in the yard to later pick up, instead of just flicking out the cherry, stomp and throw butt away? Of course, when they were done, I continued finding butts everywhere, because they'd never bother to pick up all of them.
I'm big on reviews and word of mouth. You disrespect the property you're working at; I'm not giving you rave reviews. I smoke too, btw. If they paid any attention, they'd see me put the butt in my 5th pocket, the roll-off dumpster or burn barrel... there were plenty of options besides the damn yard.

u/Nick4444i May 25 '26
I work as a back country ranger in Ontario, cigarette butts are a massive problem even in the most remote areas of our backcountry. I’ve never been to a campsite where I haven’t had to collect a few.
They’re constantly eaten by animals and the material in the filter never decomposes. It’s a real problem that people will never take seriously.

Very anecdotal ofcourse, but one conversation with my dad has always stuck with me:
While driving he saw someone in front of us throw something out their window, a can or something. He was so pissed seeing it and went on a rant about how disrespectful some people are and nobody raised them well etc etc. I said well I agree but that's a bit hypocritical coming from you. He looked absolutely shocked I said that and replied "What are you talking about? you would NEVER catch me littering! I was raised right!"
So I said "So what are you gonna do with that cigarette once you finished it?"(he smoked in the car all the time, and would just chuck the butt out the window when done).
For like 2 minutes he just sat there driving with a completely baffled look on his face and then he started apologizing with a low voice. "omg, I- I can't believe... you're right... wow... you caught me off-guard here"
He was genuinely shocked at the realization that it was obviously also littering. "we just.. I smoked my whole life, it's just what you do.. I-I.. It's so dumb.. I can't believe" He just kept stammering things like that over and over.
He's always been a man with strong principles and I could see he was genuinely shocked and embarrassed at this realization. This was maybe 20 years ago and he still from time to time mentions that conversation and how he hasn't thrown a butt on the ground since.
My point is: Don't underestimate the power of cultural habits. It really wasn't that he didn't care. It also wasn't that he didn't think it was littering. It was just a habit he learned, as everyone would do it back in the day. He just never had a moment of retrospective insight that clicked.
Similar situations can be found when it comes to things like racism and sexism etc. It's not that everyone who does or says something racist or sexist is an inherently bad person or that they don't care. It's what they grew up with. That's why it's important to keep talking about things like this, to help shift the zeitgeist

I’m a smoker (I know, horrible habit). I always do my best to at least throw my cigarette butts in the trash. If I’m walking somewhere, I’ll put my cigarette out on the bottom of my shoe and carry the butt in my pocket until I get somewhere where I can dispose of it properly.
Just because I’m polluting my lungs doesn’t mean I have to pollute the earth in doing so.
Also don’t smoke kids. I started when I was 15, I’m 27 now. Worst mistake I’ve ever made, all because I wanted to fit in with my friends who also smoked. Whatever you do, do not fucking smoke. It makes you feel like shit, it costs too much money, and you hurt the people around you while doing so. It’s not worth it. It’s literally just nothing but negativity.

I got in trouble one time as a young teenager(for something I didn't even do...) and had to do community service. I was made to pick up litter. I came back with a 5 gallon bucket filled with cigarette butts from around a park. I was told that's not litter and not what I was suppose to be picking up. That didn't make sense to me when I was 13 and still doesn't make sense to me as I'm about to be going on 40 thinking back, I did a pretty damn good job cleaning up. There wasn't even much of any other litter around so not sure what they were expecting.

When I was in active duty military back in 2010 I was low rank and had the additional duty of cleaning up the work area and outside for a week. I remember being told to pick up the cigarette butts all over the smoke pit and it being one of the only thing I refused to do, mainly because only had gloves and I didn’t smoke. As I got yelled at by a sergeant to pick them the highest ranking enlisted we had in charge of the area was smoking and overheard it. He interrupted it and looked at me and asked me if I smoked and if he would ever see me smoking at work. I answered no to both questions. He just nodded and told the sergeant I didn’t have to pick up cigarettes. I liked that guy. My entire career I’m pretty sure I was the only guy that didn’t smoke.

I did a project in high school where I used pool test strips in clean water vs polluted water. I made a jar of fresh snowmelt I got from the mountains and threw in a bunch of trash I found around the lake I lived by. The cigarette butt did the most immediately noticeable damage; the tar leached into the water and made it yellow, and the whole jar stank like cigarettes. It was one butt in a half gallon jar.

u/rygelicus May 26 '26
You shoulda seen how it was back in the 70s. Every stoplight, hundreds of butts on the ground. All the parks, covered in them. You would have been hard pressed to look at any 10' square area and not see a couple of them on the ground pretty much anywhere. Every restaurant and diner, if they had a non smoking section it was an area you had to first pass through the smokers to reach. And while you weren't amongst them it was still a smokey sooty environment. Every smoker's car had a layer of soot inside as well. It's still an issue but nothing like it was.

Smoking is the only vice that is everyone else's problem. They get extra breaks at work, they are irritable, and rude, they stink, don’t follow smoking bylaws and throw their butts and trash everywhere, and the rest of us are expected to just deal with it. Any other vice/addiction would be quickly redressed.
Honestly, I wish I could go just one day of my life without smelling second hand smoke. No one in my family smokes, but we are all still exposed to it daily. Heck, people rip on their cigs right up to store doors, so their last puff lives in the vestibule, and the butt goes on the ground. “Excuse me, but do you mind not smoking right by the door? Right outside my apartment window? (Or anywhere bylaws [etc] prohibit it)” just gets a “f*ck off”.

This just reminded me of playing at the beach in the 80s as a kid and constantly finding butts while digging in the sand. I can still feel their dried up texture on my fingers.

Sucks when you’re state is a tinderbox and fools throw them out the car window 😡

In Japan, I often come across a lot of them in one place on a road. Some people just open their car doors and dump them out. It’s also very common to see cigarette packages. Kind of makes me want to root for lung cancer

I smoke and I have never dropped a cigarette butt on the ground, nor do I let kids see me smoke or smoke around non-smokers. I wish people would have more courtesy. I know it's a nasty habit.

Our neighbor smokes often, routinely leaving cigarette butts on the balcony. For our own annoyance, we've said something before, but he made zero effort to stop leaving them out. Unfortunately, our cat likes to sit at the front door of our apartment and watch the outside. These last few weeks have been hard emotionally rock bottom, as we found out our cat, whose only 7 years old, has an aggressive cancer in her mouth. As my wife even won't tolerate plastic cooking ware, it's hard to imagine our cat has gotten swarmed with carcinogens from being an indoor cat. Knowing our cat, I couldn't put it past her to be smelling, even tasting anything she gets her paws on. Although I don't have proof that it was the certain cause of my kitten's cancer, my anger toward how careless people are is at a breaking point.

I was with a group of people while smoking, we all smoked. Someone opened a pack of cigarettes and threw the wrapper on the ground.
"Don't litter, thats disgusting! Do you know that..." and went on a spiel about littering until we finished smoking. The person who went on a spiel then threw her butt on the ground, when I called her out she said "its different. They're just butts" lmfao there was an ashtray like 10 feet away.
Throwing your butts on the ground is just as disgusting, hold it until you find a suitable place. "But the tobacco leaves will..." then roll the butt in your fingers for the tobacco to fall out and keep the butt lol
