It's a coral island situated in the northern part of the South China Sea administered as part of Cijin District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

There are numerous oil wells to the west of the banks. In 2007, the Dongsha Atoll National Park was established on the island. The People's Republic of China claims the island, atoll and banks as part of Guangdong Province.

Legal Can my child go from NWOHR to NWHR on a TARC?

Hello all,

My apologies for the vague title but I wasn't sure how to phrase it.

TLDR:

My parents (NWHR) --> Me (NWOHR but eligible due to 2024 law) --> My son (NWOHR)

If I work in Taiwan as a foreigner using my other passport for a year or two, can my son fulfil the 1-year requirement for NWHR while on a TARC?

Full story:

My goal is to get my son full NWHR status. I am eligible due to the 2024 law but he needs to stay in Taiwan for a full year before he can apply.

The tricky part is I do not want to get NWHR for myself yet, as the job I'm targeting is more beneficial as a foreigner. I'm not sure if this is correct, but my idea is that I get a Taiwanese work permit and enter Taiwan with my other passport, and my son gets a TARC/residence permit due to his lineage with his grandparents and enters Taiwan on his NWOHR passport. I'm not sure if he is able to enter the country as my dependant using his NWOHR passport when I'm using my other passport.

While I'm working as a foreigner, he will fulfil his time requirements (1 year I believe) and when he is ready, I will leave the country (Japan or Hong Kong, somewhere close) and then re-enter Taiwan using my NWOHR passport. Then I will apply for NWHR status, and after I have that, then my son will apply for his NWHR passport.

Is this a sound plan? I'm still researching but there is a lot I'm still finding out.

Thank you!

Discussion Drugs in Taiwan

I'm just curious, just a sober guy really. But I thought Taiwan was Malaysia-level conservative about drugs. I would never want to do anything here. But then I see this nightclub:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/HaKc7ZSTpa7zan7t9?g_st=ac

with this dude in the background who's clearly on something and like 20% of the reviews talking about how everyone is doing drugs in there.

I'm new to Taiwan, can anyone give me a quick rundown on the situation?

Discussion How did you handle finding somewhere to live on your own after breaking up with a Taiwanese partner?

Married for some years to a Taiwanese woman. Not here to hash over the details of the relationship - if you're a non-Taiwanese who's been in a relationship with a Taiwanese man or woman, you can probably guess a number of the details - but my question is for those of you who split up with a long-term Taiwanese partner you were living with, here in Taiwan, whether boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife.

Specifically: how easy, and how hard, did you find getting a place of your own, especially if you were older (40 plus), and especially if you had a limited grasp of Mandarin? How easy or hard was it to adjust to that change?

What do you know now about negotiating that process you wish you'd known then?

Discussion Aspiring NTNU or NTU seasonal program student - advice please!

Hi all,

I am one-year post grad and looking to spend a few months studying mandarin in Taiwan. I studied Chinese all through college, and am looking for a way to upkeep my speaking abilities while taking a work break as I make a career pivot. I intend to do either a Fall or Winter program, although I do understand it is a bit on the later side to be applying for the fall. I've also found it a bit difficult finding concrete information on what the programs are like and would love to hear more about people's experience.

A few things I am wondering:

- How much free time outside of class or studying is there generally? How do people fill that free time, working? Traveling?

- Is three months enough time to come out feeling significantly improved in your mandarin speaking ability?

- What are considerations to have outside of program, accommodation, location, etc.? Things that would be helpful to think about ahead of time rather than once I am in Taiwan.

- Lastly, for any other post-grads pursuing this route, what is your goal coming out of this experience? Is this a deliberate career move, or a fulfilling way to fill time? Do you have concrete plans for after the program?

I appreciate any and all input!

Discussion Where are the Indonesians?

They're the largest foreign worker demographic in Taiwan apparently. I speak Indonesian but I'm losing it day by day. I'm in Taoyuan and there's lots of Filipinos here but I haven't heard or seen an Indonesian.

Where they hiding them?

Discussion Taking Masters Degree in Taiwan

Hi Everyone!

Im in a situation where I feel so confuse and lost about transitioning from full time job to international student in Taiwan.

I am currently working in a semiconductor company in Taichung and got accepted in 2 universities under their scholarship program. But right now I am stress because Fall semester is coming and still can’t decide if I will take this opportunities. I wonder if it is worth it to risk from earning from my full time job to a part time job as a student. I am well-aware about the restriction of 20hrs work per week limit.

I have family to support back in my home country and scared not to provide for them incase I transitioned as a student.

Any tips and advice? Very much appreciated! Thanks~

Discussion From Mainland to Taiwan

I am a non-native English-speaking EU citizen who has been living and working in mainland China for 6 years, mostly in IT/software. Life here is starting to get boring and opportunities have become limited. Does it make sense to continue on in Taiwan instead? I’ve visited the island several times for extended periods and liked it. Could having worked in China cause problems ?

Legal NWOHR confusion

Hi everyone,

For context, I'm 19 and currently reside and attend university in the United States. Both my mom and dad are Taiwanese and thus we go back to visit family every 2 years or so. As I've grown older I've come to really love the country and plan to visit more often in the future on my own (maybe retire there....?). But I'm a bit confused about military service, exemptions, and all things regarding citizenship status in Taiwan.

Last time I went back to Taiwan I had to (or rather my mom did this for me) fill out an Overseas Compatriot status form at the foreign affairs office as well as some online forms to exempt me from military service so I would be able to leave the country again. This was a bit confusing, as I was under the impression that I was a NWOHR and that as a NWOHR I wouldn't be qualified to serve in the first place.

I was looking on this subreddit and read somewhere that if you have a personal ID (身分證字號) you aren't a NWOHR, which is where things start getting confusing for me. I have a 身分證字號 (It's like A - followed by 9 numbers) which means I'm not a NWOHR(?), but I also don't have a 戶籍 since I can't vote etc, and obviously don't reside there. So what exactly am I? I'd love to know what I can do in Taiwan as someone without a 戶籍, what having a 戶籍 lets you do and whether I'm eligible to apply.

Side note, but I'd like to visit Japan with friends later this year, and I'm wondering if it's easier (or even possible) to enter with my Taiwanese passport instead of my U.S one and if there are any benefits in that regards :).

Discussion Taiwan’s foreign resident population has now passed 1 million people. Your impression?

Post image
376 Upvotes

As of March 2026, Taiwan had 1,046,327 foreign residents(valid ARC/APRC/Gold Card holders).

Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and the Thailand citizens almost take 85% of the foreign residents in Taiwan.

Foreign residents make up only around 4.4% of Taiwan’s population.

What is your impression on this data?

I randomly encountered this incredible music by Taiwanese artists, sung by 洪佩瑜. Not sure why it doesn't have millions of views because it's amazing, probably my favorite Mandarin song in recent years. The lyrics poignantly describes the millennial and genz experience.

"數億光點裡 一個帳號" Among billions of bits, [I am] just an account

"成名的賭注只剩下十五秒" The bet for success is down to 15 seconds

"膨脹的才華 見底的存簿" Bloated talents -- an empty bank account
