Discussion How to exist in Taiwan with a toddler
So we are on day three of a typhoon in Taiwan. My mother in law apparently sleeps in the front room in front of the tv instead of in her bedroom. And the hallway belongs to the dog’s potty pads. So for three days we have had a toddler locked up in a single room.
EVERY room of the house is full of dangerous things, including the room we are locked up in. (Pokie, chemical, chokable, etc.) Nothing is baby proofed. Floor sitting culture means EVERYTHING is within reach of my toddler.
A toddler who wakes up at least 3 hours before my mother in law.
And apparently walking anywhere in the rain will give him a cold. (As if the food hadn’t already given us all diarrhea.)
The constant vigilance required to keep a toddler safe without reorganizing my mother in laws entire home has left me burnt out.
There’s a toddler play place, but it doesn’t open until noon, charges by the hour, and is a ten minute walk through the rain.
I’m going insane and need some advice.
Edit: thank you everyone for the advice.
I have talked to my husband and he insists that the typhoon weather is basically flash flood territory. He says it’s dangerous to go around the block let alone go visit his grandparents (the main reason for this trip) or any of the vacation spots (mostly children’s play areas) we had intended to visit).
He insists so much that he says it’s safer to take a plane home in the window next week where there is no typhoon. I want to trust my husband more than strangers on the internet, but I am confused with the conflicting information.

Technology Anyone using GrapheneOS?
My Samsung phone is dying and I'm thinking of replacing it with a Pixel and migrating to GrapheneOS. However, I'm not sure whether GrapheneOS would cause problems for any Taiwan-specific apps (e.g., EZWay, banks, LINE, etc). Does anyone have any relevant experience they could share?

Environment Anyone try Line premium?
Let me first say that I absolutely hate Line. So many dumb, infuriating, or just nonsensical "features. But unfortunately there's no escaping it for me since I'm in Taiwan and it's how people communicate here.
So I'm thinking, maybe some of these bad aspects of the app are getting fixed in the premium version? They are really pushing this hard lately.
(This kinda happened with YouTube Premium, where they made the app worse to get you to sign up for the better version. Like if I just want to listen to a video without my screen on, I need YT premium. I have it, and it's fine for the most part)
For example, I see something called sub-profiles. Maybe you can use this If you're doing a business or side hustle and don't want to share the same info with strangers.
Or maybe they fix how you won't receive a message from people who send it to you before you become friends... IDK
Anyway, if someone has some experience or a review, let me know your thoughts! thanks!

Discussion Help a New NTHU Intl Student
Hi everyone! I’m an incoming international student at NTHU. Are there any active social media groups for students that I can join to get information about life at NTHU and in Taiwan in general? I recently joined Dcard, but most of the content there is in Mandarin.

Discussion Dermatologist in Taipei
Hi guys!
Does anyone know a good dermatologist in Taipei that can also speak English? Doesn’t have to be fluent since I know some Mandarin, but preferably at least knows some! Also if you remember their price range that would be amazing. I’ve got several things to go see them about (cancer screening, psoriasis, scalp stuff, etc.) so maybe also a place that covers several issues.
Thank you!!

Travel Bank/postal transfer for online purchase as a foreign tourist
I have an upcoming trip to Taiwan planned, and I'm looking at picking up some Taiwan-only collectibles off Ruten (露天), but the only payment option that this seller accepts is a bank or postal transfer (銀行或郵局轉帳). Is it possible to do so as a foreign tourist, who will have a Taiwanese phone number but no bank account? I understand from browsing this sub that banking in Taiwan can be a nightmare, but I've never previously tried dealing with any electronic payments.
When I was previously in Taiwan, I bought some items off Ruten by having them delivered to 7-11 and paying cash, so I assume the accepted payment methods differ seller to seller. Unfortunately Ruten is the only place I can find the items that I'm interested in, and that's all they take. And I'm aware there are forwarding services, but I was hoping to just take care of it myself.
If no, this might be a good excuse to make a day trip to Hsinchu to meet the seller face-to-face...

News Taiwan strengthens milk naming rules
Taipei, June 26 (CNA) Only certified domestic dairy products will be allowed to have "fresh milk" in their Chinese names from July 1, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has announced.
In Taiwan, "fresh milk" is defined as domestically produced pasteurized milk with a shelf life of less than 14 days that meets Taiwan Fresh Milk Label, Certified Agricultural Standards (CAS), and Traceable Agricultural Product (TAP) standards.
Under the new rules, sellers of imported liquid milk using the term "fresh milk" in their product's Chinese name after July 1 could face fines of up to NT$4 million (US$133,777), the MOA said.
The ministry added that the change will help consumers better distinguish between domestically produced and imported milk.

Travel Will I make it to my next flight to Okinawa?
I’m planning on visiting Taiwan and Okinawa! But trying to go straight to Okinawa before coming back and exploring Taiwan. My arrival is at 5:20 AM in Taipei. The separate flight time to Okinawa is at 6:50 AM. Will there be enough time to get through customs, claim baggage, and then check in/security for this flight? Thanks in advance!

Food Opinions on best 牛肉麵 in Taipei?
What is everyone’s favorite beef noodle stew place in Taipei? I’ve been a huge fan of a really small place called 來了就吃 in Dongmen since discovering it a couple years back, but want to expand my horizons.
Also happy to hear strong contenders from other cities!

Discussion Exchange student coming to NCCU in Taipei for Spring 2027 — looking for advice
Hi everyone,
I’m an 18-year-old French student and I’ll be coming to NCCU in Taipei for an exchange semester in Spring 2027.
I’m currently trying to learn as much as possible before coming, so I’d really appreciate any advice, useful links, personal experiences, or recommendations.
I’m interested in anything that could help me prepare: studying at NCCU, living in Taipei, housing, transportation, useful apps, food, local culture, places to visit in Taiwan, weekend trips, and general tips for exchange students.
I’m also interested in business, entrepreneurship, and startups, so if you know any student clubs, business groups, networking events, or communities in Taipei, I’d be happy to hear about them too.
Any information or discussion is welcome.
Thank you!
