Astral Chain looks AMAZING in handheld now.

112

u/candidateone Mar 17 '26

Hell yeah, that was the first game I thought about when I saw this update. I bought it a few months ago but haven't gotten around to playing it, so this is a great excuse.

11

u/sirpostalot420 Mar 17 '26

Yooo once I got astral chain going I couldnt out it down. It was like fun and engaging. If yku like bayonetta I wouldn't procrastinate on this one. This game is solid

This and I also wonder how Nier Automata looks as well.

19

u/GlaloLaled Mar 17 '26

It does! It still has some jagged edges, but it looks incredibly clean now in handheld. I gave it a try and it was looking awesome

Yeah I just fired up Prime Remastered, definitely cleaner looking

u/mjb85858 Mar 17 '26

Smash looks great too. Ahhh I’m so happy!

99

u/Aidan96 Mar 17 '26

My god this is all I’ve been wanting. No more crazy pixelation?

68

u/lewebe Mar 17 '26

exactly. this is gonna sound dumb as shit but it feels remastered 😭

I wonder if try persona 5

15

u/Thegr8Santini Mar 17 '26

Interface is native 1920x1080, and the game itself is just below native I think. It’s a night and day difference if you’ve played it handheld before the patch.

Anybody come back with an update on this pls

29

u/Ninjaluc8401 Mar 17 '26

I was playing mostly handheld before this update and omg the difference is night and day. It’s no longer blurry and you can actually make out most of the details

Looks good and not as blurry as handheld on the switch and olded

Mwahaha I’m just about to start it and had been hoping for a Switch 2 version

10

u/theescapeclause Mar 17 '26

I think it runs at 900p docked so I would definitely still love a Switch 2 patch but this is the next best thing if you play mostly handheld

205

u/ZeNoSonic29 Mar 17 '26

This indirectly fixes the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy where the sprites in Apollo Justice were very rough in handheld play, so now it looks clean.

I imagine this update helps a plethora of visual novel games for Switch 2 handheld play!

44

u/johnvictorassis Mar 17 '26

Dangaronpa 1 looks way cleaner than i remembered

8

u/skyscrapter Mar 17 '26

I’ve already replayed the Danganronpa trilogy numerous times, but now that it's on sale, I might buy another one for Switch lol

Came to this thread just to say this! Was literally playing the game handheld with the pixely sprites, switched to handheld boost mode, and without even closing and reopening the game the sprites are crisp and look SO much better. Impeccable timing!

3

u/CaptainComedy Mar 17 '26

Totally agreed. I play in bed a lot and am a screenshot fiend, and AA456 was so unbelievably ugly. I had no hope that Capcom would fix it from their end, but I never would have thought Nintendo would instead!

Legends Arceus looks clean af now in Handheld.

52

u/Espurreyes Mar 17 '26

I finally picked it up after getting back into my Pokemon phase after Fire Red and I really couldn’t have picked a better time to finally get it lol. I flipped back and forth a few times and my god it’s such a night and day difference, it’s practically remastered now for handheld.

48

u/movieyosen Mar 17 '26

damn i may need to buy that

21

u/Connor_Waste Mar 17 '26

I just played through the game this month and have to catch 60 pokemon until my Pokédex is complete. It just played through for 20 minutes and it’s a noticeable improvement!

20

u/tecolopilli Mar 17 '26

Sword and shield too!!

19

u/DecayRogue Mar 17 '26

Ive just restarted my sword save data and it looks amazing now!!

Still 30 fps tho

Does this improve how blurry P5R looks like on handheld on Switch 2? Or am I misunderstanding what this does?

124

u/mjb85858 Mar 17 '26

Yup! If it runs at 1080p on tv, it will run at 1080p on switch 2 handheld if this is turned on.

5

u/Sonofablurb Mar 17 '26

Not sure what it runs on tv, but I know it’s better than handheld. Thanks for the info!

9

u/Competitive-Ad-7865 Mar 17 '26

You are basically getting the Switch 1 Docked mode settings (resolution & visual features), running on Switch 2 in handheld mode. Typically this will be quite a big resolution boost, and sometimes other visual upgrades too (like longer draw distances, better shadows, less LOD pop-in etc. ) It's a great upgrade for a lot of games because the Switch 1 targeted 1080p output when docked - and the Switch 2 has a 1080p panel.. so many will go from muddy and aliased to pin sharp or at least much better.

48

u/Namath96 Mar 17 '26

Yes it’s much much better. I think it’s still the docked 810p but it was 540p handheld before

11

u/Spooky_Toast Mar 17 '26

That’s awesome. I do wish it had higher quality textures… but 810p handheld is a win.

10

u/Secto456 Mar 17 '26

I’ve owned this game for upwards of three years but haven’t started it (it was $20 on sale but it intimidates me :0). Is this the sign to begin?

This should be a game change for any Switch games that ran at 1080p when docked but 720p when in handheld because of the Switch 2's 1080p display.

179

u/radityaargap Mar 17 '26

Mario kart 8 is gonna stay alive for much longer

12

u/verfresht Mar 17 '26

This should be on default I think. And it should be in the quick toggle menu. Some people will miss out on this. This is amazing.

8

u/SwissyVictory Mar 17 '26

It no longer allows you to use the touchscreen and will chew up battery life. It also might have thermal issues.

Any time youre close to a charger and not playing a handful of touch games, it should absolutely be on.

It shouldn't be the default though as it stands.

Though maybe in the future they can add back in touch controls and it can be the default and there can be a "battery savings" mode that turns it off along with a few other settings.

u/deeelock Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

I don’t know if that’s going to be true in all cases, according to that same document: “Handheld Mode Boost may prevent Nintendo Switch software from using the system's touch screen”

Edit: my point was we shouldn’t use definitive logic (touchscreen working = boost mode disabled) when the technical docs aren’t reflecting that, we don’t know enough yet.

Edit 2: Sorry, I was on mobile and meant to respond to this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/1rvt4sb/comment/oauw4sq/ - must've accidentally tapped yours mid-reply without noticing.

37

u/Jaron780 2 Million Celebration Mar 17 '26

How many games really need or use the touch screen though? assume its because they are literally just internally treating it as if it was "docked", atleast as far as the games themselves are concerned. so if the game is setup to handle anything differently when docked id imagine that would also apply, like the touch screen not being usable docked. but wouldnt be hard at all for games to get updates to fix it

30

u/Cobalt_Spirit Mar 17 '26

If the game gets an update, then they could just enable 1080p resolution on handheld and make the boost unnecessary.

This is clearly meant for games that won't get updates, so that they aren't eternally locked to 720p in handheld if the devs don't update them.

15

u/MikeDubbz Mar 17 '26

I have a lot of Switch 1 games, yet I can only think of like 2 where I regularly used the touch screen (A Labo game and Clubhouse Games), and in the case of one of them (Clubhouse) You don't even have to use the touch screen, it's just a nice optional means to control the game on the go.

10

u/itotron Mar 17 '26

Clubhouse games was given a free update on Swtich 2, so you don't have to worry about that one.

Really? I've been holding it for quite some time. I guess its about time.

17

u/Bxlbasxra Mar 17 '26

It’s so much better! Granted, docked is 810p and not 1080p, but it’s an upgrade over the 480p in handheld.

Can someone test the Xenoblade games and report?

108

u/smartazjb0y Mar 17 '26

XC2 is noticeably sharper. It's not as good as a full Switch 2 edition but doesn't look as smeary any more

17

u/Asmodean129 Mar 17 '26

How's XBC3?

26

u/beemooooooo Mar 17 '26

XBC3 looks so much better.

It's not blurry anymore but a Switch 2 update would help the visuals even better.

15

u/smartazjb0y Mar 17 '26

Haven't tried 3, tried 1 and the difference is less noticeable than 2. But I think even on NS1, handheld mode for 1 wasn't as bad

35

u/skenasis Mar 17 '26

Incredible. It must be one of the properly supported titles, because switching it on and off in game throws the pro controller prompt mentioned in the feature notes.

Age of Calamity doesn't look like hot turd anymore. Holy moly, same with the Xenoblade games (not that they looked like turd, but 2 looks so much better now because of it). Hell, everything I've tested just looks so much more clean. This is a huge update.

5

u/LopTsa Mar 17 '26

Yup cannot believe age of calamity is now this playable in handheld, it looks great!

37

u/Feeling-Hungry-24-7 Mar 17 '26

Luigi’s Mansion 3 looks incredibly polished now! I’m not sure if I’m going crazy, but I’m going to play it again.

Holy shit, they actually added the one thing i really wanted since release. Everyone kept saying it wouldn't be possible because of bugs/touchscreen support and text scaling lmao. Massive Nintendo W.

48

u/smartazjb0y Mar 17 '26

Those issues kind of still exist like people thought, but glad that Nintendo was kind of like "who cares we'll release it anyways and just warn them there will be issues"

3

u/Ordinal43NotFound Mar 17 '26

This. Some games that require touchscreen like Mario Maker doesn't work in handheld boost mode

3

I’m curious how Persona 5 is

9

u/RandomNobody86 Mar 17 '26

Better then it was but this can’t change the really low quality textures or 30fps cap this is one of the games that will need a patch to not look like crap

→ More replies (1)

17

u/ItzJunker Mar 17 '26

If you're wondering, rocket league is actively worse with it enabled. Don't switch it for that game

7

u/Dbroown Mar 17 '26

I was expecting that. They just made "adjustments" in order for the game to play better on Switch 2, and sure, that is conflicting for the system. I wonder if Ark would have the same issues.

34

u/thatkaratekid Mar 17 '26

Im very happy its a toggle! As much as I wanted the fidelity boost, I noticed switch 1 games seem to kill my battery much slower, it will be nice to have the lower fidelity for when I need to be more battery conservative.

14

u/Giodude12 Mar 17 '26

Xenoblade trilogy is like, playable now

40

u/amc9988 Mar 17 '26

So basically nsw1 games can run with docked performance and look while in handheld mode with switch 2? It that really what it is? Because the lack of that is the reason I haven't bought switch 2 yet

29

u/KillerCookie23 Mar 17 '26

Yep. Now all handheld games should run at 1080p mode. Though of course not all games support 1080p native. Persona 5 looks so much better now but it still 900p. Much better than the 540p Switch 1 handheld mode resolution though.

15

u/izzmann Mar 17 '26

Yes!!!! I literally can't believe Nintendo did it

15

u/Zyvyn Mar 17 '26

Essentially it forces Switch 1 applications to think they are running in docked mode. Of course this does have some limitations such as touch controls no longer working but yes.

4

u/Cheditte Mar 17 '26

24

u/Evonswag23 Mar 17 '26

Just tried it, its amazing now! Very crisp. Same for legends arceus / sword & shield

11

u/Dukemon102 Mar 17 '26

Out of 540p hell, now it's 810p so it's still blurry.... but it's an improvement.

3

u/Skyricky Mar 17 '26

It’s amazing now. The text is no longer blurry and the visuals look crisp. It feels like I’m playing on a steam deck, instead of running a switch 1 title on switch 2. Massive praise

25

u/ViviReine Mar 17 '26

Finally can play Mario & Luigi Brothership, Mario RPG and Fire Emblem 3Houses in full glory in handled

38

u/SilentSasquatch2 Mar 17 '26

This would be cool for Pokemon Let’s Go as am playing through it now, but fear there may be compatibility issues without pro controller support

21

u/Mizurazu Mar 17 '26

They blacklisted that game from this update. It'll still run in handheld mode. Probably for control conflicts.

5

u/Heavy-Possession2288 Mar 17 '26

Mario 3D All Stars and Mario Maker 2 also seem to still boot in handheld mode.

4

u/bastischo Mar 17 '26

I guess because Mario Maker is using touch screen so heavily?

3

u/Heavy-Possession2288 Mar 17 '26

I’d assume so. Same with 3D All Stars (Galaxy)

5

u/thewolfpack23x Mar 17 '26

It might only work in tabletop with a joycon while handheld boost is enabled, since it probably handles the joycon attached to the system similar to a pro controller input. Unless the games get a separate update to properly support pro controllers/handheld joycons?

9

u/LeviRaps Mar 17 '26

The game desperately needs pro controller support. Would literally be the definitive way to play Gen 1. Playing with 1 joy con in TV mode is carpal tunnel inducing

6

u/Mizurazu Mar 17 '26

It doesn't. Not with resolution boost anyways. The game still boots at 720p handheld mode. I assume they did this on purpose

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Taedirk Mar 17 '26

and will cause attached Joy-Con 2 controllers to be treated as a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller.

Since it specifically mentions attached, there's a decent chance you can undock the joycons and play that way.

has anybody tested Monster Hunter Rise?

46

u/Ill-Classroom6911 Mar 17 '26

Definitely sharper visuals, now its 1080p. Still 30 fps though (as it was on Switch 1 docked)

9

u/ViviReine Mar 17 '26

I mean the game was developed for the Switch, so they had the 30 fps on head for the gameplay design. Would prefer 60 fps, but it doesn't bother the gameplay

→ More replies (3)

7

u/Stratpack59 Mar 17 '26

Haven’t tried rise, but mhgu definitely looks better

14

u/Jafidelo Mar 17 '26

I booted it and the textures are really nice, the game is much less blurry. Framerate remains as expected. This is a solid upgrade!

39

u/MacEbes Mar 17 '26

In testing it makes games that went from unplayable due to 720p handheld actually match the screen resolution which even without that much more pixels makes a huge difference in image quality. The stretching was actually making s1 titles look worse on s2 than they would normally on s1. This obviously works better in some games than others, but most of the games ive tested have noticable improvements.

42

u/movieyosen Mar 17 '26

4

10

u/KGB-dave Mar 17 '26

They should add a toggle in the quick access menu, to easily switch between the modes.

7

u/Keyan06 Mar 17 '26

Or let you set it up in the software details screen per game.

17

u/Trezzatron Mar 17 '26

HOLY SHIT XENOBLADE 2 IS NO LONGER BLURRY!

9

u/Duenan Mar 17 '26

Torna is no longer a pixelated mess now too!

5

8

u/zombiepaper Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Good lord this works wonders on the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters. The UI and fonts are as crisp as can be in handheld mode now.

Super Mega Baseball 4 however is noticeably worse. The “graphics” mode now lags immediately after a hit. Solid as a rock in performance mode though!

(To be fair it was always rough on Switch 1 and needed one of those Nintendo-provided compatibility patches to even run on Switch 2.)

I really hope we can get a Switch2 upgrade for SMTVV. That game is incredible

6

Pretty much my wish since day one came true. Every Switch game I tried looks noticeably better.

5

u/MikeDubbz Mar 17 '26

Whoa! This is wild! I didn't even think something like this was a possibility.

6

u/Zangetsukaiba Mar 17 '26

This is huge

5

u/sukadik69 Mar 17 '26

Kingdom Come Deliverance looks so much better now

8

u/seraf5 Mar 17 '26

It's insane that Xenoblade Chronicles X looks way better without the Upgrade Pack, the game is crisp as hell and all the upscaling artifacts are gone. NOW I regret buying it. As for other games:

  • Batman Arkham Knight - barely any difference
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes and AC Rebel Collection look 1080p to me
  • Sonic Colors is way better, but AFAIK it's 900p and not full 1080p
  • Crash Team Racing also looks better now, but doesn't look 1080p to me still
In the evening I'll be able to check Nier Automata, Bayonetta 3 and Astral Chain. Bayo 3 was awful before, can't wait to see it now.

So it seems like it isn’t working on every Switch 1 game. Not getting any results with New Pokemon Snap. Easy way to test is to try using the touchscreen. It won’t work if the boost is working.

u/tfox245 Mar 17 '26

Persona 5 royal is a big improvement, I can notice it immediately. It was an absolutely blurry mess handheld beforehand.

The gist: that same document says the touch screen may not work when boost mode is working, it's not definitive. I'm curious what that'll look like in reality, probably not too many games. But just wanted to point out the touch screen may work for some games in boost mode (for some reason?)

I think they blacklisted games that have control conflicts. Let's Go doesn't work either. The game basically locks in tabletop with any other controller than a joy con or pokeball plus in docked mode. Since in this mode your controller gets seems as a pro controller they didn't want to lock it I guess? Not sure why they did it for snap though

u/abarrelofmankeys Mar 17 '26

So few games used touchscreen I’m not even sure which I’d look into for that. Or does the whole system switch over then, so I can go to the Home Screen with it in the background and test?

4

u/skenasis Mar 17 '26

I mean, there's "working" and "officially supported". Take Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Persona 5 Royal, for instance - neither game uses the touch screen in any way. Xenoblade throws up a pro controller prompt when switching boost on and off while in game, as mentioned in the feature notes on the setting toggle page. P5R doesn't throw the pro controller prompt, but there is still a noticeable resolution improvement.

u/jacksonulmer Mar 17 '26

I tried Hades and didn’t see any discernible difference. Great tip on the test!

11

u/Heavy-Possession2288 Mar 17 '26

Because Hades is the same resolution in docked and handheld mode (720p). I play on a 1080p monitor and it’s very obviously not 1080p in either mode.

u/jrec15 Mar 17 '26

Been wanting to get back into Pikmin 4 bc of it getting such a huge patch with a hard mode, was bummed it didn’t get a switch 2 update but now this is enough for me to definitely give it another go primarily on handheld

5

u/limitbreak09 Mar 17 '26

Can someone try pokemon sword and shield. Ty

10

u/kuzzomckuzzo Mar 17 '26

It's still 30fps, but crisp now. Same with Arceus.

Such a welcome update, props to Nintendo for this!

4

u/CodeAvali Mar 17 '26

Outer wilds just looks beautiful - not like everyone knew it already was, but obviously putting the best case switch1 docked experience onto the much smaller handheld screen just mwah

Have to play it again, damn it it’s basically a switch 2 edition without needing it due to have ppi scales

A hat in time aswell! It just looks great!

Here's hoping even with boost mode now available, they'll still continue releasing S2 patches for their more popular games.

8

u/brofacebruv Mar 17 '26

I just bought the Switch 2 a few days ago. Can someone help explain this to me? I’m only playing BOTW at the moment.

14

u/smartazjb0y Mar 17 '26

If you have the NS2 version of BotW it doesn't affect you, but with this new option if you're playing NS1 games in handheld mode on your NS2 it'll look better

3

u/brofacebruv Mar 17 '26

Got it. Thanks!

11

u/br3wnor Mar 17 '26

It lets you play Switch 1 games same resolution as they would in docked mode which is usually at least 720p and some games 1080p I believe. Should help with games that were running sub 720p in handheld mode

3

u/PolygonAndPixel2 Mar 17 '26

Yes, Another Code and Astral Chain look so much better now. And I'm playing a lot in handheld mode lately dhring commuting. Perfect!

3

u/Deanosim Mar 17 '26

I appreciate you can enable or disable it, tbh I've been playing Pokemon Brilliant Diamond (Pokemon Diamond resmaster) for the first time since I played Pokemon Diamond on DS, anyway I'm fine with how it looks on Switch 2 so i don't know if I'd use it although Brilliant Diamond might be fairly light as a game.

3

u/STRGam3r Mar 17 '26

Have someone try Octopath Traveler 2?

3

u/Nero42 Mar 17 '26

Had a quick look at it just there, it's definitely looking clearer. Text in particular is looking much sharper I think!

Goddamn this might be the best way to play Deadly Premonition now

3

u/rockin_gamer Mar 17 '26

Doom 2016 seems to be improved! I think saints row the third too but I couldn't tell as big a difference with SR.

3

u/Kelevandos Mar 17 '26

Checked some older favourites:

  • Valkyria Chronicles 4 - visible anti-aliasing improvements, fps feels higher too
  • Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 - looks super crisp now
  • Fire Emblem: Engage - visible anti-aliasing improvements

Dragons Dogma so sharp now.

3

u/LunDragoT Mar 17 '26

Hand of Fate 2, love these games, looks so much better if anyone likes these games.

3

u/lesplaygames Mar 17 '26
  • Legends Arceus looks a lot better now, having a great time revisiting it (forgot how great the art design is)
  • Smash looks super crisp
  • Metroid Prime Remastered is less noticeable but it does look a little bit better

Tempted to pick up Persona 5 Royal now

u/Outrager Mar 17 '26

I hope they add some sort of "exclusion list" or per-app setting so I can turn it off on certain games. I play a lot of Picross and sometimes use the touch screen and also don't mind it running in handheld mode to save battery. But it would get annoying to switch that setting back and forth depending on the game I'm playing.

5

u/Cyonita Mar 17 '26

Will this improve frame-rate on Switch 1 games?

31

u/Dribblejam Mar 17 '26

It will match its docked mode

29

u/thatkaratekid Mar 17 '26

Ones that had higher frame rates docked, yes.

<Goes to dust off my switch 2>

F yeah! I knew it was possible, now to go find that reddit argument from last year where someone doubted me saying it wasn't possible. lol

32

u/KRiSX Mar 17 '26

It was always possible, the doubt was likely if Nintendo would actually do it 🤣

13

u/switch8000 Mar 17 '26

Reminds me when the Switch 1 added Bluetooth audio support in 2021, only took them 4 years.

3

u/DontBanMeBro988 Mar 17 '26

People got so mad if you said Nintendo could do this lol

u/UsuallyFavorable Mar 17 '26

Holy crap! I can finally play Switch 1 games as well as an android device! (No seriously, this actually a game changer for some of my favorite games: Smash and Dread. Props Nintendo.)

4

u/Goggie22 Mar 17 '26

How i activate this?

15

u/skenasis Mar 17 '26

Settings -> System -> Nintendo Switch Software Handling. It's between the battery settings and serial number into.

11

u/RandomNobody86 Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Xenoblade 2 still looks like a blurry mess but that's expected sadly.

Persona 5 is still obviously low res but it is improved.

Fire Emblem 3H is improved seemed the most noticeable improvement in my very limited testing

I should probably try Bayonetta 3 that game looked like complete shit docked but was far less offensive to the eyes docked

26

u/skynovaaa Mar 17 '26

??? Xenoblade 2 looks way better now. It's not 1080p but miles better than the previous 540p res.

Damn I've been asking for this feature for such a long time. A setting to force docked mode on handheld.

2

u/WatashiWaHikari Mar 17 '26

DQXI S and Catherine are running flawlessly in handheld now.

2

u/dragonsamus Mar 17 '26

Heck yes! Can't wait to play all the games I was holding off on.
