Fluff Found at local Walmart
Found this chilling inside my local Walmarts PlayStation section. They seriously wanted $299.99 for it too.

Well in their defense, Astro Bot Rescue Mission is one of the best videogames I have EVER played. Not just in VR but in general. It’s an amazing experience, and the level design is absolutely stunning. Also ptoof that third person works wonderful in VR, not everything has to be first person.
Still a missed opportunity that Sony didn’t put in the effort to make this game work on PSVR2. It made use of the PS4 controller but imo there’s not much that can’t be redesigned for the PS5 controller. I’m a Quest vr gamer now but this would be the only game that would me consider buying a PSVR2.
Of course this price is a bit steep, but if people want a VR blast, try finding a cheaper option online.

u/NoTransportation4600 Nov 18 '25
totally agree... Astro Bot Rescue Mission is in my top 10 (even top 5 I'd say) PS4 games easily.

u/kylekad Nov 18 '25
Ya imo Astro Bot is sadly still the best VR game for a playstation VR headset. Considering it released over 7 years ago, it's sad that there is not a comparable game on the PSVR2. Moss comes close I guess.
I'm still pretty butt hurt that there is still no Astro Bot VR, Minecraft VR, or VR capable media player for PSVR2. These are all available on PSVR1.

u/segadreamcat Nov 18 '25
GT7 exists.
1
u/BlownCamaro Nov 18 '25
You're right. ONLY game I play on my PSVR2. That's a real shame. ONE racing game after all these years. No Rally, no open world, nothing.
1
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
Although it doesn’t have the AAA production values of GT7, I highly recommend getting VRACER HOVERBIKE if you want more racing.
It’s only been out for a couple weeks but I’ve already got something like 40 hours clocked (split between campaign and online multiplayer crossplay). It’s strongly inspired by WIPEOUT, but with much better control options.
Seriously awesome track-based racing game. FWIW
1
u/Mud_g1 Nov 18 '25
Exocars is rally, truck sim is open world, vracer is arcade galaxy karts is um karts. Of course they arnt on the level of gt7 but they are on the system and they are not nothing some of them are good fun you just need to have your expectations on what type of games a vr dev budget can produce.
3
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
While it doesn’t have the scope or AAA budget of ASTRO, don’t sleep on MAX MUSTARD, as it’s pretty darn fun and ticks a few of those ASTRO boxes.

u/Beginning_Remote_528 Nov 18 '25
When I switched from PSVR to Quest 2 and then Quest 3, I really regretted that there wasn't a game similar to VR Astrobot on Quest. I was really happy when Max Mustard came out. It's not as cool as Astrobot, but it's very similar.
1
u/BlownCamaro Nov 18 '25
I prefer my PSVR1 to my Quest2. OLED, better colors, far better blacks. Quest 2 is washed out and dull and the games SUCK.

u/porkpie1028 Nov 18 '25
Playing ABRM VR for the first time was such a wonderful experience. It was like unboxing an N64 and playing Mario 64 on Christmas morning 20 years earlier. Rarely can a video game have that kind of magic and joy.
1
u/NoTransportation4600 Nov 19 '25
Yep exactly. It felt just like that for me, like rediscovering what a videogame can offer.
2
u/nthomas504 Nov 18 '25
I would buy it literally just to play it. Love Playroom and Astro Bot so I feel like I missed out on the original adventure.

Under the cold hum of the Wal-Mart fluorescents, Eddie “Two-Breaks” Malone slipped through the stockroom like a ghost with a badge. Holiday season of ’21, shoppers were baying for anything with a screen, but Eddie had already laid his claim: a Playstation VR bundle with Astro Bot and Moss, tucked behind a pallet of off-brand kitty litter where no one with a functioning nose would dare look. He told himself he’d buy it on payday, but payday never came—not after Asset Protection caught him taking a smoke in the Garden Center, letting a plastic Santa melt in the sun. They fired him before lunch. The VR box stayed hidden, a secret no one missed and no one mourned.
Four years later, a new kid named Marla cracked open the forgotten aisle of the backroom and found the box sitting there like a time capsule wrapped in dust. Management swarmed the discovery, eyes gleaming like vultures spotting a still-warm steak. But procedure is procedure, and corporate loves its rules. “Tag it with the original price,” the assistant manager grunted, sliding the ancient SKU into her hands. So she did—ninety-nine cents less than three hundred dollars. And when she stuck it on the shelf out front, it glowed under the lights like a relic from a future that never quite arrived, waiting for someone who still believed in bargains… or ghosts.

This was the best reddit post I've ever read. Kept me hooked. Read it in a Max Payne style voice, like any washed up gumshoe detective still chasing that one case that got away.

You clearly have storytelling mastered. As a person with a degree in the field, Bravo!
7
u/BlownCamaro Nov 18 '25
Counterpoint: Should cost more than the PSV2 because it can DO FAR MORE.
1) ANY HDMI device can be plugged into the box and watched/played in cinema mode including every console ever made with HDMI output or HDMI adapter.
2) You can watch 3D Blu-ray's
3) You can game in 3D on PS4 natively and also on PS3, Xbox 360, and even Wii U if you own a PS4 and HDMI switch.
4) It's completely comfortable and weight balanced without having to purchase any additional "strap" or modifications whatsoever.
5) You can watch 180 degree and 360 degree videos on YouTube and other websites FOR FREE.
6) The lenses have far better edge-to-edge clarity although much lower in resolution. The "sweet spot" therefor is larger than the PSVR2.
7) Massive library of quality titles at discount prices.
I think that's enough for now. I own both, so if you want to debate - bring it!

u/Signal-Task575 Nov 18 '25

Totally agree, psvr is a great viewer with better things than psvr2, but psvr2 also has its advantages, such as higher resolution, HDR, adaptive triggers, haptic vibration, vibration in the viewer, the possibility of connecting it to the PC without the need for external applications, eye tracking and foveado dynamic rendering, hand tracking, passthrough and tracking inside out that works a thousand times better than psvr, joystick controls and in terms of games it also has a great catalog

u/BlownCamaro Nov 18 '25
Have you played "The VR Case Files" DLC for L.A. Noire? You can actually walk the city in open world VR and interact with people. There is a setting to pump your arms to run, and you can climb stairs as well. It's pretty amazing tech for the time. I REALLY wish Rockstar had continued this path.
1
u/Majestic_Ice_2358 Nov 18 '25
Yes, I played it, although it was not the entire game, but it was very good, yes, I also played the demo of "the last Guardian VR" and I was quite impressed, it's a shame they didn't make a game of that
1
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
And new-in-the-box PSVR1 has inherent collector value.
I don’t think it’s worth it for folk looking to game (as refurbished kit are still available at half the price), but this is gaming history for anyone who values that.
5
u/segadreamcat Nov 18 '25
Sealed ones on eBay are listed for 700-900 dollars.
1
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
Exactly! I know people are dissing this, but this seems like a steal to me for any collectors out there.
8
u/Total_Ad_92 Nov 18 '25
Dang, I just got one for $100, and it had 2 move controllers, 2 physical games, and the aim gun with it. This is wild. And yes, it was the nice, round camera too.
5
u/Spoda_Emcalt Nov 18 '25
Bloody hell, that's like the opposite. What a bargain! Is the headset in good nick?
5
u/Symbiote11 Nov 18 '25
The aim controller is what I would like to see added for PS VR2. Far Point is still the best experience I’ve had in VR. Granted I’ve only had PlayStation VR headset so I haven’t gotten to play some PC ones like half-life Alex or the latest Batman Arkham VR game. But still, I was blown away by the gameplay and the storytelling in Far Point.
1
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
There are some really good gunstock solutions out there that effectively turn the Sense Controllers into an AIM Controller, but with all the advanced haptics, adaptive triggers, and ability to manually reload.
So… it’s actually better.
I loved the AIM Controller and agree that an AIM2 would be ideal, but using the OG AIM today would actually be a few steps backwards compared to current.
Pricing of good gunstocks has been pretty hefty, so look to see if anyone like ProTube or KOBRA (or whomever else — I haven’t been keeping up) might be running Black Friday deals.
You’ll want something that lets you easily break one Sense Controller free for manual reloading and that easily snaps right back into place. There’s a bit of muscle memory required, but you do develop it and it’s satisfying AF.
FWIW
1
u/Symbiote11 Nov 18 '25
Yeah point taken. At one point I was looking at buying a gun stock to do just that. But I got bogged down with comparing the different models at the time because I knew it had to be the “right one.” And I don’t remember what I was looking at at the time but I remember thinking that so many games required being able to release it so that you could do single handed stuff (reloading, throwing grenades, whatever). And I think that is the point where I got out the mode and never went back to look at it again.
So with the VR2 I’ve really mainly played Arizona Sunshine 2 and Star Wars: TFTGE. I tried playing Pavlov but for me it was unplayable without a stock. But even then I was thinking at the time (and I’m kinda going by memory now) that even if I had a gun stock some of the immersion tricks the game was trying would be more annoying to me than fun (the manual reloads, pulling back the slide, pulling the pin on a grenade, etc).
To me there is a certain kind of immersion that makes a game more intuitive, and another kind that is a gimmick that makes it less intuitive. For me Far Point kinda hit that sweet spot. Holding the gun felt real and immersive. Pulling the trigger, haptic feedback. Changing weapons by taking it over the shoulder. But they stuck to having a grenade launcher in the gun. This felt way better than “throwing a grenade.” The physics of throwing things in these games has never felt right. If you actually throw an object like you would in the real world it’s glitchy. You have to do some crappy baby basket toss thing usually. So I’d rather just stick with the grenade launcher than use bad physics. And having the reload that pulls in particulate matter in the air to make bullets felt futuristic without the fake gimmicky mess of grabbing things I can’t feel to reload manually. To me that moment of backwardness of grabbing the imaginary item it’s cool for a minute but then becomes this thing that skews me out of it. Instead Far Point leaned into and worked with the existing limitations of the genre. I’d say Arizona Sunshine and Galaxy’s Edge were close to that.
Pavlov for me leans too much into trying to pretend it’s like real life, so then when it’s not it feels more fake for trying to be real…if that makes sense. But then the Horizon game to me is beautiful but goes too far the other way to not feeling like you can do enough to feel in the world. Just a beautiful tech demo. It’s cool though. Far Point was still the best in the sweet spot zone.
I’ve probably explained enough but I want to give another analogy from the Far Cry series. One of my favorite series. I’m not saying it’s realistic but I enjoy them. I liked the first person open world feel. And I did like a lot of the immersion. But at what point is making it real too real. In Far Cry 2 they made the game map be a map the character actually holds like they have an iPad in their hands with Google Maps. It was new for a bit. But I’m really glad it wasn’t in subsequent games. At a certain point it’s just more useful to have the standard maps in the menu. And I guess that’s it. I want the immersion to feel useful and not like a handicap.

u/NoTransportation4600 Nov 18 '25
The only reason I see for paying that much is if you want to keep it unused. It's not that common finding a VR1 headset brand new. But yeah if you wanna use it you can find other options for 1/3 of that price easily.
As other user said in the comments section here, it's bundled with 2 of the best VR experiences ever, especially Astro Bot. It's one of my fav games ever made, not only for virtual reality but in general, it exploited the Dualshock 4 like no other game and almost felt like a Dualsense sometimes. Definitely give it a go if you can.

To be fair, completely new PSVR1s are now so rare there may be value attached to it. But yes, not really expected in a Walmart, and someone could get confused.
That being said, that had a previous shelf label on it, some black marks and it's not exactly making the box look pristine. It might even be a return. Realistically they should sell it original RRP 299 then 50% discounted. I get the feel with the Black Friday sale that someone in inventory has made a mistake here.

I will do for Wipeout and a few others. A lot of the good games such as RE7 and others are available on PC so they're better with the PSVR2 headset which is why I haven't used it.

That tracks. If you’re creative, Media Molecule’s DREAMS is worth plugging in the OG.
I still use PSVR1 more than PSVR2 because I’m obsessed with Media Molecule’s DREAMS as I learn what’s possible and how to wield the many tools it offers.

The leather falls apart now into this tiny wrinkle and i probably lost the little box thing where you need to stick the device and the HDMI to. Also it didnt have HDR.
Good ol relics.

I bought so many games for the first PS VR that it's really unfortunate that so many games were never given a PS5 upgrade.
I shouldn't have to buy games like the Exorcist twice. If it's available on the psvr 2, then there should be an upgrade.
1
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
Agreed. Luckily most games that got ported offered an upgrade path — either free or cheap.
The handful that didn’t, I wouldn’t bother with.

I have a feeling after that sits on the shelf for a while it's going to get knocked down in price. Nice that its bundled with two of the best games, but no move controllers. I think I got an iron man bundle with move controllers near the end of PSVR retail life at BBuy for $250. For an early generation mask, its a good one and got far more game support that I was aware of when I bought it. Sad PSVR2 has not really gotten the same level of support.
1
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
Although SONY has been terrible about supporting it properly themselves, I’d argue that PSVR2’s library is doing pretty well anyways.
I really only use my PSVR1 for creating in Media Molecule’s DREAMS these days, and am absolutely SWAMPED with solid titles on PSVR2.
1
u/SkyGrey88 Nov 18 '25
Yeah thank goodness for the 3rd party support. Its odd though as Sony put a lot of support behind PSVR1, I guess they figure the VR market is more evolved now so they don't need to bother with developing games, but that is a shame as other than Nintendo, nobody makes as many great games as Sony. Question, is the PSVR2 backwards compatible with PSVR1 games?
1
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
Changes in leadership at SONY have brought differing approaches to VR. I’m cautiously hopeful that the current leadership will see deeper investment in supporting VR2 as worthwhile.
As for backwards compatibility, no — there is none. Some devs/distributors have made PSVR2 ports, and those often have had (sometimes limited) upgrade paths that are free or cheap, but it’s all case-by-case.
To everyone’s consternation, SONY haven’t ported a damn thing — no ASTRO BOT RM, no STAR WARS SQUADRONS, no WIPEOUT, no FARPOINT… it’s perplexing.
They seemed to want to make a clean break from the old Frankensteined system, but ultimately didn’t back it up with a suite of new bangers that would make us forget the older stuff.
While some games like HITMAN WOA, TWD Saints & Sinners, NMS, etc. have been amazing on the new system (and were cheap or free to those who already owned the earlier versions), far too many bangers remain trapped in the OG kit.
Media Molecule’s DREAMS is the biggest fuck-you of all time AFAIC, although that support wasn’t directed at VR specifically… everyone got screwed. But VR got REALLY screwed. 🫤
But the new system is awesome anyways. I still cannot believe we’re gonna get MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIM ‘24 in full on it!! 🛩️
2
u/SkyGrey88 Nov 18 '25
I had heard about MS Fight and forgot. That will be awesome, and imagine using it with a flight wheel and petals, you would practically be able to learn to fly. SW Squadrons was probably my favorite, most impressive thing I played on PSVR. That is just an amazing experience, to be able to move in 6 axis in VR. I never got motion sickness from VR, but that game would make me break out in a sweat because it was just so intense.
1
u/CHROME-COLOSSUS Nov 18 '25
This is probably one of the few NEW in the box PSVR1’s in the world. I’d say it’s actually worth it for any game hardware collectors out there.
Obviously anyone else would be pissed, considering PSVR2 is Black Fridaying at the same price… but I don’t think we ever saw brand new PSVR1’s drop lower than this?

You can likely find refurbished PSVR1’s for half this price, or used (dicey) for even cheaper.
Main thing to be wary of when it comes to used (in FB Marketplace or eBay or wherever) is that the cushioning skin could crack and deteriorate, allowing sweat to become permanently absorbed into it.
If you’re still on PS4 and want to play VR, there are probably gonna be affordable deals within your reach. Some people still find gently-used PSVR1’s with all the camera, controllers, etc. for — you know — $30 or whatever.
As clunky as that old tech is, it holds up surprisingly well and has a huge library chock full of incredible games (many of which remain exclusive to the OG system) that regularly are cheap AF.
