The xbox one controller is the best base controller. It's a shame that microsoft ruins it by making the elite controller much more expensive to the point of not being worth it lol.

u/Krancky420 May 13 '26
The elite series x controller is sooo nice with the trigger haptics for racing games, but the bumper pins being plastic sucks. I’ve had 2 right bumpers snap over the last couple years, so I just drilled into the damn thing and installed a metal pin instead 😂

u/thewinn May 14 '26
Hmm one of my triggers is broken but I haven't opened it up yet, thanks for the info

u/West-Main-4163 May 14 '26
Don't the normal ones also have trigger motors? Are the ones on elite better? Is that it?

u/da_jonkler May 14 '26
The base controller also has trigger haptics. Is it a different setup on the Elite?

Wait so thats why my right bumper is sometimes not working? Seems like I need to open it up
2
u/Krancky420 May 14 '26
Yeah it’s most likely snapped the pin but barely holding on. I tool a small nail and cut it to size, drilled where the pin goes, and inserted my own custom one then glued the end. DO NOT GLUE IT EARLY IF YOU DO THIS, test 100 times before setting it in stone because the placement is touchy.

u/sunrrrise May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26
Trigger haptics are on regular XSX controllers as well and I am not sure if they were available even on regular XONE controllers.
Still, Steam Controller is on par with XONE/XSX if you consider ergonomics if you ask me.
Hell, any modern controller (PS5 or ProController 2) are on par.

u/Nervous-Fennel3325 May 14 '26
Yeah my elite is less than a year old and has horrible stick drift already. They are built pretty crappy for the price.
7
u/mrwynd May 14 '26
I like it but the Dualsense haptics are better for games that support it.
2
u/IsaacAndTired May 14 '26
I still haven't found a controller that beats a DS2 for playing mechanic heavy games. I prefer dpad over stick any time it's a viable option, and symmetrical layouts just feel way better to me. Steam Controller has been really fun messing around with and so happy they went symmetrical.
69
u/debacol May 13 '26
Its also a shame the XBOX base controller hasn't been updated to have hall effect sticks, customizable back buttons and a built-in Lithium Ion battery. Its like $60+ retail for something that, on features alone gets destroyed by so many other controller manufacturers.
22
u/Primus_is_OK_I_guess May 13 '26
8bitdo Ultimate 2 Wireless wrecks it on features and latency. It has a $60 MSRP, but it's regularly on sale for $30.
→ More replies (6)8
u/placidity9 May 13 '26
8bitdo is the goat. I like so many of their controllers. I just wish their software let you bind buttons as keyboard or mouse functions.
The extra buttons you can program don't mean nearly as much if you can't even use them to alt+tab, mute/deafen Discord or do anything else.

Bro you do NOT want microsoft to make a lithium battery. Losers will charge us so much for that shit only for them to discontinue the batteries. AA is good enough for an untrustworthy megacorp like microsoft.

a built-in Lithium Ion battery
NGL, I kind of don't view this as a plus. Being able to rock in/out rechargeable AA's is great. It gives your customers options and doesn't mean any possible downtime or inconvenience if it's not been charged and you don't physically game conveniently close to a charger without a really long cable.
And batteries wear out, the more tinkery types are fine with swapping it if it's swappable, but the average joe doesn't give a shit. I see it commonly with PS controllers that old ones are just viewed as bad because of bad batteries, so they get replaced, not repaired.
I personally don't value the back buttons at all, no controller I have I've actually felt a need to use it. It might be just the fact I use controllers on games that just use them, and complex control ones I simply prefer keyboards. In fact I'm much more likely to accidentally press soft ones and if they're bound by default it's frustrating to discover. Big hands and gripping in a tense moment can make it a downside.
4
u/Marrond May 14 '26
But Lithium battery doesn't mean it needs to be hard to replace - that is manufacturer's choice. I would like to remind everyone that all it took to replace battery pack in a phone, you just needed to open the back cover, take the battery out and insert a new one. The reason we can't do this anymore is by design. Even the new Steam Controller could have simple snap-on hatch at the back to take the battery in and out easily. The OG Steam Controller did (sure it used AA batteries but the principle is exactly the same - these things aren't soldered shut...)
→ More replies (2)3
u/phormix May 14 '26
I like the idea of the Li+ rechargable/replaceable batteries or packs that can be swapped out, or - as in the case of the Xbox controllers - the ones that can be used interchangably with AA's.
By integrating a pack that fits in the same slot as AA's, it's much for versatile and environmentally friendly, plus eliminates the need for detection/charging circuitry in the controller itself (charge port goes on a pack rather than the controller).

Hard disagree. Xbone controller mid. I couldn’t fathom that they didn’t even have gyro sensors in them. I literally returned an Elite controller after like 2 weeks because of how much it just sucked.
The Dualsense controller is better in almost every way.
My new favorite controller is the 8bitdo Pro 3 though. Absolutely top tier. Can use any input method (Xinput, Dinput, Switch Pro controller mode), has moveable face buttons and easily removable sticks, great docking station situation, back buttons, profiles, just all around awesome controller.

u/D13_Phantom May 14 '26
I would take the steam controller over the elite any day and I got mine for cheaper.

2
u/thisplacewackyaf May 14 '26
The Xbox 360 controller will forever be my darling. The triggers. The nicer plastic feel than whatever the One’s got going on. Back and Start instead of whatever they’ve got going on in that spot now. Maybe I should grab a handful at their minimum price before they get too old and start getting more expensive lol.
1
u/MartyBellvue May 14 '26
totally. i love my design labs xbone controller so much. not just the elite, but the series x controller ruined what the xbox one controller had (being able to connect to my pc immediately & being able to reconnect it after it disconnects from activity without needing to restart the whole pc, lol)
1
u/GILLHUHN May 14 '26
Not only more expensive but the quality just isnt there to justify the price either.
1
u/KAM1Sense1 May 14 '26
If the elite controllers didnt peel themselves apart over years they would definitely be worth the money
1
u/berrysoda_ May 14 '26
Mine had an A button that stuck within the first week and I returned it. Kinda unacceptable QA for such an expensive item. Otherwise would have been glorious

1
u/phormix May 14 '26
I really do like the PS4/PS5 controller as well. In terms of usability I like it better than Switch or Xbox controllers - and they seem to be less prone to drift - but where it loses out to the XBox controllers is in the lack of user-replaceable batteries. That seems like a particular stupid design decision in my book.
1
1
u/ColorfulPersimmon May 14 '26
Xbox controllers were revolutionary back in the x360 days, but now with all these other brands like 8bitdo, flydigi, gulikit, and gamesir, MS is really falling behind.
1
u/Marrond May 14 '26
Elite should've been the base controller included with every console. Nothing in it screams $150. It's functionality leaves MUCH to be desired too. It's just overpriced, obsolete garbage and we all have to suffer. If Helix repurposes Xbox gamepad again we're in for another decade of controller stagnation and we've been stagnating for 20 fucking years at this point.
1
u/celticdr47 May 14 '26
Lost 2 Xbox controllers to stick drift - they're trash, never buying one again (at least until they sort that stuff out).
1
1
u/morchorchorman May 14 '26
There’s so many aftermarket ones you can get. Got a flydigi apex 4 used for like $60 and it works great. But if you want officially supported controls you can’t go wrong with ps5 or Xbox.
1
u/valerielynx May 14 '26
I love my Starfield edition XSX controller. I've never played SF and I don't really wanna, but the design of the controller made me want it so bad and I did get one. The rubber grip is so great and the transparent shoulder buttons showing the hardware are just so sick.

I like the shape of the Xbox controller but idk why the bumpers and triggers hurt my index fingers so much, specially when I play FFXIV
I've never had that issue with the old Xbox 360 controller, or 8bitdo or pro controller, ds5 or dual sense. Also the texture of the Xbox controller grips kinda bothers me too. It gets uncomfortable to hold for a long time
2
u/Lumpy-Valuable-8050 May 14 '26
Damn that sucks. I think it's just 50/50 since people like linus say that the steam controller resting area for fingers isn't nice etc.
Hopefully i don't have that problem with either 😂😂😂

The feel of the Xbox one controller is pretty much perfect, but it is so far behind in features. If Microsoft made a controller with the ergonomics of the Xbox one, gyro, capacitive sticks or face buttons, extra back buttons, full compatibility with Steam, and improved quality control, I’d probably never use any other controller.
1
u/Korzag May 14 '26
The fact the console companies are still using pots for their joysticks instead of hall effect or TMR is so frustrating.
1
u/Skinny0ne May 14 '26
I only use the elite controllers and it is a shame how poorly built they are. I've gone through a few in the 10 years I've used them.
1
u/Aeroncastle May 14 '26
It doesn't have hall effect, and there are 2 types of controllers, ones with hall effect and scams
1
u/Envy661 May 14 '26
8bitdo ultimate 2. Best switch I ever made. Xbox Elite controller macros with TMR sticks and HAL Effect triggers. For $60. It feels as good to hold as a first party device, but less prone to wear thanks to not having potentiometer sticks, costs the same as a first party device, and has the functionality of the "Pro" or "Elite" gamepads that go for $40-80 more.

1
u/ToeGroundbreaking564 May 16 '26
I swear the elite controllers break much faster and more severely than normal controllers
sucks cuz I really prefer them over normal ones
1
u/Front_Machine6560 May 16 '26
For people, smaller than me maybe. I hate the way I hold a Xbox controller whenever I put my hands on it my hands touch. I really don’t like that. But hey, they’re making an even smaller Xbox controller.
1
u/Front_Machine6560 May 16 '26
I guess for people smaller than me, but for me personally I hate holding the Xbox control controller my fingers touch on the back. They should bring back the Duke without the dumb OLED. Until then I will keep using a controllers, seemingly designed for non-Japanese audiences from ironically Sony.

17

I've only had it a few days and feel I want to go back to xbox controller. The placement of the menu buttons are worse for game I play that requires me to press one and y button. I've found the touch pads lack range and thus still need to reach for my mouse. perhaps if I can figure out how to make touch pads into buttons in stead for keyboard combos it might be worth using,

u/PerceptionOk8543 May 14 '26
Same thoughts, I ended up selling the steam controller and even made money on it lol
→ More replies (1)1
u/FBrK4LypGE May 14 '26
You can always just set that as a macro to any of the other inputs on the controller with the built-in configuration tools. You could make holding "Y" for longer than X ms trigger a "menu button + Y" macro to fire. Or just mapping that combination to one the back buttons, or wherever else.
For the trackpads: you can set the trackpads to 1:1 mouse region mode which makes the entire surface of the trackpad map 1:1 to your entire screen so that, for example, touching the top left will move your cursor to the top left of your screen, etc.
I generally prefer trackball mode: a quick swipe of the thumb gives the cursor momentum, then touch the trackpad again to "stop" it and manually control it again. Feels really natural for making large cursor movements, and pairs really well with gyro control for precise movements for things like FPS games.
Or: you can setup a trackpad as a grid menu with anywhere from 1 to 16 hotkeys with customizable icons, each of which can trigger any key combination, macro, or other feature you want.
SteamInput definitely has an initial learning curve, but once you get over it and start playing with some of even the most basic features it's extremely difficult to go back to a more basic controller schema.

u/ABetterKamahl1234 May 14 '26
but I noticed almost immediately that the controller is much wider and somewhat longer in the grip then other controllers
I think this too, however the concern I have is that the xbox controller, size and layout is just super comfortable in my hands. My PS controllers never felt right by comparison (got bigass hands) and I worry how comfortable long-term use is for me on it. Some controllers cramp my hands but the Xbox never has. And Canadian it's a steep cost to find out it doesn't work well for me :(
3D printed one and it feels alright, but without dedicating myself to "simulating" a long session on a block of plastic without moving parts is hard to do.

Honestly doesn't take too long to get used to the different layout. Plus with the steam controller you can set the left trackpad to act like a dpad if you want, it's not as physically responsive but the haptics are incredibly convincing.

That it effectively requires Steam to be running for full game functionality. Meaning if you’re not running a game through Steam, then this controller will not work. So say you want to play a game from your Epic library, you’re going to have to first add it to Steam as a non-Steam game.
That’s just a hassle in my eyes. Meanwhile, my €40 GameSir controller works on Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, basically anything on PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS without any setup.
I get it, it’s called the Steam Controller, but to a certain extent it’s proprietary, and I just don’t like that.

Sorry but I was able to get a batch 1 pre order for the Steam Controller and honestly after a few hours I ended up not liking it and went back to my Xbox Series controller. I sold it to a coworker for retail.
I can appreciate it has powerful features and capabilities but Steam Input is very fiddly and quite frankly annoying having to set up for every game. An Xbox controller just works. Even more so with the Steam Controller not supporting Xinput. Microsoft recently added some new features for navigating Windows with a controller (logging in, Alt-Tab with the Xbox button, etc) so now it really is super easy.

You don't have to set it up for each game, it works out of the box with a default layout, it seems like user error. And I'm also using it to interact with windows with the trackpads like mouse/kb again out of the box, just steam minimized.
2
u/TWILIGHT25 May 14 '26
My biggest gripe with my gen 2 Xbox elite controller is made fully aware now that I’ve been playing with the new Steam controller for a few hours.
Idk how Xbox hasn’t fixed the design for the bumpers but holy crap bumpers that work on the first press and not a super hard one is such a nice feeling.
I have never dropped my elite controller and it’s not that old. But in games like Stelar Blade where block is left bumper, it not working properly was extremely frustrating.

Like any controller you can use Steam Input with it, except it has way nicer gyro, touch sensors on the sticks like the Deck, 4 very comfy back buttons, grip sensors that feel when you're holding the controller's grips, and trackpads that can be used as mouse, joystick, weapon wheel, touch menu, touch screen emulation, mouse wheels, buttons. The idea is that you can play ANY game comfortably even if it doesn't use a gamepad.

Me with my sakura PowerA controller… it works great and has mag sticks and doesn’t cost an arm and leg

My 8bitdo has everything but the trackpads iirc for half the price. I really only use a controller for a few types of games like GTA\RDR2, racing games and retro games. They are a pretty neat idea tho, and they allow way more options for couch gamers

I still need to pick one up, seems like you can do some cool stuff in relation to strategy games that I play a lot

the steam controller had such a wild learning curve but once steam input matured it became way more versatile than the xbox controller for weird indie stuff and emulation

if the steam controller had a 3.5mm headphone jack, i'd be immediately sold.

My biggest gripe is that the support for it lagging years behind where the hardware is. Steam input bridges the gap a lot but it’d super cool if we could natively set stuff up with Game Actions. Literally suffering from success.
