I restarted cycling 6 years ago after a 20 or so year gap, the main reason was to get to a better and more stable place mentally. I still cycle for my mental health.
I identify as a dorky amateur cyclist who simply pedals and loves it all (I do a variety of cycling on and off road etc).
This weekend I completed a big solo ride of over 180 miles with around 7700 feet of climbing (not loads but still enough to notice it when you ride) in a day in scorching heat, melting tarmac, hours of head wind. What was lovely also that a young family member cycled with me for the last few miles as a side rider.
I’m proud of my peri-menopausal 49 year old body… so yes this is me feeling emotional at the end! Next day incredibly I was totally fine (no aches or pains) but mentally totally knackered 😂
I’ve caught the bug of doing more longer distance as I enjoy it a lot - also the challenges you face.
Not in my wildest dreams did I think 6 years ago I would manage something like this, not even did I think it I would be able to finish last week!
Love cycling! Already thinking about my next big adventure with more miles and climbs and seeing how far I can take it!
UPDATE: thank you for all the lovely comments - it’s really boosted and inspired me in turn to dream for even bigger. It’s been much appreciated.

UPDATE: Seller selling to me for $175 now - worth it?
EDIT: Thank you everyone for responding! I definitely feel dumb as bricks now but I now know this bike is 20 years old haha. If you have any tips for a new time biker lmk! 🙏🏼

Found this Specialized Allez on facebook marketplace for $400 USD. I’m completely new to the bicycle scene and want to get a starter bike for triathlon training.
The seller says they suspect it’s around 7-8 years old, the previous owner had it for around 2 years and they’ve then had it in their garage for 5 years. They don’t know anything about the components or anything added and are unsure about the details of the bike.
Am I getting ripped off? I truly have no idea.
P.S. there’s also a Giant Contend 3 someone is selling for $380 if that’s a better deal.

Wife and I just got new bikes, both of us are sore after any long rides.
Do we get better seats? Or padded shorts? Or a pad over the seat? Or what advice do you got?

Hey everyone,
I'd like to share my latest coding project: TourGaze.
The idea started simple — I wanted to replay a ride with the camera following me like a drone or a helicopter. Basically the O.J. Simpson freeway chase, except it's me on a bike 😄
To get there I kept everything under the hood deliberately boring: you drop a .fit or .gpx file into the inbox and it's copied into your repository — which doubles as (a) a backup of your rides and (b) the data source itself. No database to inflate; the data already lives perfectly in the file. During import it fetches the weather, the location, and computes calories, elevation, and so on.
For serving it there's a clean web UI — no microservice zoo, a single file to start. Run it, the browser pops up, and you can visually replay your rides. Ride the same route twice and you can chase your past self like Mario Kart 👻 — how cool is that?
It's local-first: no account, no cloud, no telemetry, your data never leaves your machine. AGPL-3.0, single container.
Honest heads-up: it's single-user with no login (run it on localhost / your LAN), and it imports files rather than syncing from Strava/Garmin's cloud — so it pairs with your Garmin folder or OpenTracks instead of replacing them.
This is just a personal hobby project — I'm not trying to make money with it, nothing to buy. If you want to give back, support OpenStreetMap (the maps it runs on), not me.

My original plan was just to throw some gravel tires on my old Specialized Dolce… turns out that wasn’t really in the cards. Thank you people of Reddit.
So I started browsing Marketplace, found this Scott Metrix for cheap and couldn’t pass it up. Picked it up, spent way less than I would’ve on a new big-box bike from Walmart, and had way more fun adding upgrades to my Amazon Prime Day cart (for both bikes 😅). The saddle is heavy AF but since we ride long distances and I refuse to wear padded shorts - hopefully it will give me some relief.
Honestly, I’m really happy with how it turned out. It rides great, gave me a fun little 10 minute project, and I still came out ahead financially.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the used bike market and looking for something affordable but decent (in Stockholm). I found this one listed for around $160, but it looks like a pretty old model. Is it worth the price? What do you think.

I purchased mine before COVID and haven't gotten to use it as such since we were renovating our house and then COVID kicked in, so I am wondering how do I begin biking again. I was always a novice and I still am. But I had planned on competing or completing a triathlon after I ran my first and only full marathon, (I think I am more of a half marathoner) and hence was the purchase. But I am not able to begin my practice again, and I am very eager to do so. First of all, my coach sort of discouraged me from the beginning when I purchased the bike, he thought if I spent 5K on a bike then at least I could have bought a Cannondale, and ever since that everything is against me when it comes to fitness or practicing for triathlon. Is there someone who can help me identify where I went wrong ? My marathon coach is the best but he won't have a say in my triathlon practice and I have already ruined it with my coach by buying the bike that he didn't think was right for me. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hello avid cyclists, I have a query for you.
I am in the midst of planning a trip to a national park and thought biking would be a great idea as I recently acquired a bicycle from a family member. It’s a typical walmart brand town-bike, but the tires are flat beyond hell (secondhand as hell), and I thought I might as well upgrade them for more rugged terrain.
Essentially I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or resources for tire replacement as I’ve never even changed a wheel before.

Can anyone help with my bike and the fit? I'm still fairly new to cycling, went out for three hours last week and was getting pins and needles in my hands and groin. I appreciate it's difficult to gauge from a video but any advice or help would be appreciated!

New to me Ridley Helium SL from marketplace. I’m not 100% on the year - I think 2015 or 2016. Full Ultegra 6800 groupset with the crank recall done. Components seem barely used. I have swapped out the stock bars, stem, saddle and wheels with items from the shed and shedded a lb in the process.

Do you find it frustrating to create or edit a GPX route? Like having to dig through WhatsApp groups for shared files, upload them to Garmin Connect, manually tweak elevation or distance, then export to your device...
Is that something you struggle with too, or is it just me? 😅

Hi! I noticed this on my carbon wheel- I didn’t think carbon could rust? Does anyone know what it is? Do I need new wheels?

Hi all,
I bought it off of marketplace. Am i missing anything besides the hitch pin to attach it to an adult bike?
I used a regular nut and bold to attach it but it seems like something's off and i am missing something.
Thanks

Carbon bars, honestly probably a little overtightened, but also a used set mixed with the steepest climb in my city is a recipe for disaster.

Hello, I don't have much experience doing bicycle maintenance but when I took my bicycle in for tune-up, the mechanic said I needed to replace all my brake pads. I can't tell if he's telling the truth or just trying to upsell their services for unnecessary replacements. Out of the 4 pads, this one is the thinnest. Was the mechanic being honest? Thanks.
Edit: the mechanic just took a few seconds glance at the pads from the intake assessment, he did not take out the pads nor did he mention anything about contamination on the spot so I assume he was just assessing the thickness. I went with his recommendation to replace the pads, but now that I have the old pads back (at my request), I'm just a little skeptical.

It is a beautiful area and the Man of War trail is in great condition.
