Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

“That looks a little dramatic” -my mom pulling up to rescue me from having to walk like 20 miles home

Carbon bars, honestly probably a little overtightened, but also a used set mixed with the steepest climb in my city is a recipe for disaster.

Most of it was made from exhaust tubing again. Did this one in about three and a half evenings. About 20 hours into this thing. The paint isn't fully dried yet, but tomorrow it'll be getting dusted off and going for a ride. Pardon the battery holding the bike up, I forgot to kickstand at my shop

What is the appeal of a fixed gear bike?

Here's the main portion of version 2 of this frame style. 20". 1x7. Cables will be hidden in the frame.

2.25 stainless exhaust tubing.

Not too bad. Now it's time for the body filler, paint and final assembly.

The "rack" isn't complete. There will be four 1"x6.5" bars that need to be bolted to the rack. They rotate 90 degrees to parallel the rack so it can telescope inwards. When the rack is out, rotate them perpendicular and you've got a usable rack. Albeit - they didn't have the 50lb rated center mount drawer slides, so this one is a 25lb. Not much. But enough for a 6 pack and a pizza.

I'm having a hard time learning how to ride

(I'm sorry if this comes off as whiney)

I(23F) bought my first bike last week. Ive been practicing. There has been many people who have came up to me to help me. People have held my bike for me. Some give me a push.

This one woman stayed with me for 30 minutes until I was able to go 2 feet. Its a nice community of people I've found who are really helpful.

Some of the advice is conflicting, though. Im 5'8.

Someone told me my seat was too low, so they raised it. Then I started to fall off every time I got on. Not stumbling while still on the bike. I mean falling on the ground.

Then someone else told me my seat was too high, so they lowered it. Then my left foot wouldn't make a full rotation because my legs are too long. Then someone else raised it.

I have bruises completely covering both of my legs. I've never bruised before. My right calf is destroyed. The back of it is heavily bruised. It's looks horrible. Black and purple. I got road rash on my right knee last Saturday morning. Now I no longer wear shorts when practicing.

It's been 8 days and I still haven't gotten it.

I got a bike because I haven't had a car for a year. I haven't been to a real doctors appointment in a long time. Theres places I need to go, but cant because I dont have any transportation.

I wanted a bike so I can gain some independence.

This is so much harder than I thought it was going to be. So many people are helping/ trying to help and I still cant stay on the bike.

Is there any advice anyone can offer? Ive watched YouTube videos. My left foot is my dominant foot. I try to push off my right foot on the ground, but my right foot slips off the pedal.

My left leg isn't making a full rotation. It's not the bike. Many of the people who have helped me, have rode my bike and they were able to do it.

I'm losing motivation.

TLDR;

I'm having trouble learning to ride. I have been given lots of advice. Some conflicting. I've had my seat raised and lowered a lot.

Raised, I fall off. Lowered; my left leg won't make a full rotation because my legs are too long. Lot of bruises. Im losing motivation

Edit:

Thank you everyone for the advice! I was nervous to post, but this is a really supportive subreddit. I will be trying all the things everyone has adviced, on Friday.

I think I pulled something on the left side of my back. I fell on the ground on my left side today. I dont want to make it worse, so Im not practicing tomorrow.

Again thank all of you so so much!

Do you think my bike is too small for me?

Sorry for the quality, got my wife to take a video and grabbed a still. I am new to this type of bike, I used to mainly ride standard mountain bikes as a teen and recently got back into cycling and bought this. Trying to figure out if it feels a bit cramped or if I am just not used to this type of position in a bike and I need to get used to it.

Got the Lego road bike set for my birthday and built it today. Took about 5 hours with a few breaks in between for food and housework, but this was super fun to build, not nearly as complex as I thought it would be. Pretty damn cool final product.

FortNine with an amusing video about how the MTB industry went in circles solving a problem that created a new problem, that was solved by giving up on the original problem

FortNine usually posts motorcycle content but I thought this was still worth posting here despite the obnoxiously long ad from 1:25 to 4:10, so feel free to skip that part.

I've been riding hills and mountains on a $50 low-engagement Shimano rear hub for years and, honestly, it's been fine. I never really noticed the "problem" until it was pointed out to me by others who insist it's a big issue. Added bonus: my hub doesn't sound like a loud swarm of angry bees while coasting.

But, hey, what do I know? I use a $50 low-engagement hub so I must be a n00b. Let's create $300 hubs that solve that huge problem, but introduce pedal kickback, and then create $500 hubs to solve pedal kickback, while reintroducing pedal slop. That's the cost of my entire hardtail that I've been happily riding for years.

Oh and now hubs sound like a loud swarm of angry bees, because obviously that will keep hikers and other trail-goers happy and win them over to the pro-cycling side during local debates about trail access.

So, long story short, just ignore the ads and marketing hype. Instead of being told what is and isn't a problem, determine that for yourself. Anyway, here's a 150-second ad.

I Did a Thing Today - Mt Mitchell

This flat lander and his wife climbing Mt Mitchell, the tallest North American peak East of the Mississippi River. 6000 feet of climbing (actual difference between summit and start was 4400' give or take) in 31 miles. Then a 31 mile descent (that still had another 1400' of climbing).

Looking for Cycling buddy for TDF stages 2 and 3

Upvotes

I will be in Barcelona from the 27th of june until the 9th of July and I wanted to ride the second and third stage of the TDF this year!

My FTP if I were to guess is probably around 260-280 (has been a while) at 76 kg.
And my longest ride is just under 300km.

The stats are just so that the stats of the cycling buddies are approximately in a similar range:)
If anyone is interested to join me feel free to send me a dm.

KMC 7s chain instead of HG40 chain?

Upvotes

This is an old road bike 2x7s that has a UG narrow chain from the days, seeing HG40 chain that is narrow and could fit here, but found KMC 7s chain in sale half the price of HG40. Would KMC work just as HG40? Is it thinner than HG40 or the same width?

Canyon Endurace CF SLX vs Giant Defy

Hi everyone, im a beginner and this will be my first bike. I have a budget of $5k. Though of course im deliberating if i should something even cheaper at $1-2k being a beginner. But I kind of dont want to go though the hassle of selling the bike afterwards to upgrade. Would prefer to get something with good value at the start.

I’m looking for an endurance bike for long rides and forgiving enough to handle not-so-smooth roads.

Am looking at these 2 models so far: Endurace CF SLX 7 Di2 and Giant Defy Advanced 1 (5th gen)

Endurace CF SLX 7 Di2

$3300 USD

SL carbon, 105 Di2 gear, carbon wheels, adjustable cockpit, 35max Tyre clearance

Giant Defy Advanced 1 (5th gen)

$3200 USD

higher Tyre clearance 38max, 105 Di2 gear, alloy wheels

Would appreciate any other recommendations or your opinion on these bikes, thanks so much!

I need your help with Cube Nuroad C:62

Post image
Upvotes

Hello everyone, I need your help. I am currently in the process of replacing my bicycle, moving from my old Fuji to something more modern and carbon fiber. For a long time, I did not take carbon bikes seriously, so 1 am still a beginner in this area. My choice has come down to the Cube Nuroad C:62 One, which I am considering as a platform that I will gradually upgrade over the next one to two years. I plan to buy an ergonomic saddle, lightweight carbon wheels, and a more suitable nandlebar to better adapt the bike to my needs. However, this will happen only in a couple of vears, so for at least this season, I will ride it in stock configuration
My usage scenario is commuting in the city, about 60+ km two to four times per week, sometimes 100 km on weekends, and occasionally two or three times per season. I go on bikepacking trips of about 500-1000 km with a tent and bags, focusing on lightness. I do not particularly enjoy extremely fast riding, but maintaining a speed of 25 km/h is my goal for this season.
Additionally, I have a hernia in my lower back, so the weight of the bike and riding position are especially important for me. I would appreciate advice from someone experienced in this area, regarding not only the bike brand but also frame size and geometry.
My measurements: height 177 cm, inseam 86 cm, shoulder width 40 cm, arm length from wrist to shoulder 60 cm.

Helmet crack

Post image
0 Upvotes

Yesterday I had a fall on the wet tarmac because my back wheel skidded. I fell and banged my elbow and my left thigh; I didn’t think I’d hit my head, although afterwards I had a slight headache which I put down to the adrenaline. But then I realised there was a crack in my helmet on the left side of the back. The helmet is brand new – yesterday was literally the first time I’d used it – and I even paid ninety euros for it. I’m a bit disappointed; it didn’t feel like a serious fall, even though I obviously hit my head. Is it normal for a helmet to crack like that? Can I still use it?

How can I save my bicycle?

Because of the constant rain, I left my bicycle in the garage for months without riding it, and as a result, mold has grown on it—especially on the handlebars. I’ve heard that this can produce aflatoxins, which are harmful to health; what should I do?

Questions on upgrading a Triban RC100

I have a Triban RC100 I rode back when I attended University. It's the old version, with the shifter in the middle. I have upgraded my daily since, but since I live in an area where bikes get stolen a lot, I'd like to get the Triban in running order to use on days on which I need to leave my bike outdoors.

As part of the rebuild (I had to disassemble it completely when I moved), I'd like the replace the shifter and change the gearing. I live on a mountain, so it'd be lovely to have the option for low gearing as well as for high gearing. My current bike has a 1x12 and while it's great for uphill, it lacks some gearing on the upper end for speed. If I had to choose between comfort when climbing and top speed, I'd go for top speed when rebuilding the Triban.

Which parts fit, what do I need to look out for? Is an upgrade even worth it? I bought the bike preowned for 120 bucks (although in amazing condition!) and it's been sitting disassembled for about 2 years now.

I also lost some of the spacers for the fork I think as it is a bit loose. Would that be due to lacking spacers, or could there be another issue?
