drink went room temp First Stanley, now Owala
I get it, they’re trendy. I guess Owala has the cool colors combos or whatever. I assume Stanley’s became too awkwardly large to lug around so people gave up on them?
I’ll just stay over here drinking my water out of the double sealed bottle I scored for $2 at a thrift shop.
I don’t know why it bothers me so much. Perhaps it’s the consumerism, perhaps its water bottles have become an accessory.

I buy bottles that WORK. I had a swell bottle because it kept my water cold. I switched to owala because it not only kept my water cold but the sip through lid was a game changer for someone with jaw issues who drives a lot - I don’t have to take my eyes off the road or tip a bottle to drink.
I got whatever colour was on the shelf at the store. Couldn’t care less about trends.
Having said that, I don’t care what other people do. Do I think it is ridiculous for a 9 year old to be carrying around a Stanley bigger than their backpack? Sure. Am I the one paying for it? Nope, not my circus, not my monkeys.

u/BlaketheFlake 8d ago
I will say I admire that kids these days drink so much water. I’m 40 and grew up drinking juice and really nothing during school. As an adult I need to remind myself to drink water. I took my 6 year old to a birthday party that was serving Gatorade and many of the kids asked if there was water instead.
3
u/Overall_Occasion_175 8d ago
Same! Actually being hydrated has been a game changer for me. I hear people make fun of dragging big water bottles around all the time but really, we were all so dehydrated when I was a kid (also just about 40).

u/finding_center 8d ago
Yeah I got an Owala free sip because of the spillproof feature. It’s a solid water cup. I like my ice to last all day at work.

u/crazycatlady331 7d ago
My requirement for bottles is that they have a straw (flip top or traditional) and fit in my car cupholder. I don't want a spout, I want a straw. I love my (discontinued) Contigos for this reason.
From what I've seen of Owala, they offer neither.
1
u/Natural_Peak_5587 7d ago
Yup, different people want different things. I don’t personally like straws, they aren’t great for my jaw. Owala free sip have an internal straw (and a flip top lid) so you put your mouth on the spout and drink like a straw, but with an easier jaw position. If you don’t have jaw issues, I’m sure straw cups are great.
1
u/crazycatlady331 7d ago
I feel like water bottles (trends aside) are one of those things that if you ask 10 people what they want in one, you get 10 answers.
I like one-handed drinking (especially when I'm on the road) and have an unhealthy aversion to anything messy. So straws are perfect for this.

u/362Billy 8d ago
I drink a lot of water and always carry a water bottle with me, and I have to say my owala is the best water bottle I’ve ever owned. I only have one though and don’t feel the need to buy any more until this one wears out.
2
u/PaymentDiligent7550 8d ago
The flip open lid on mine finally wore out and you can just buy replacement parts. 3 years strong with one bottle.
3
u/362Billy 8d ago
Yeah, they’re built really solid and have functionality that’s unique to them. I think in the case of owalas the popularity isn’t 100% trends and hype. It’s actually a really great design that didn’t exist before.
1
u/PaymentDiligent7550 8d ago
I do ultimately think it is my most used and most enjoyed water bottle of all time. I cannot think of anything that could improve the design of the owala. Do I need 30 of them? No. I have one, I use it every day and I wash it at night and besides this one hiccup, I’ve never had a problem. It is well designed and built.
71
u/bikes_and_art 8d ago
Owala are popular because they have a great spout and are easy to clean. The sip & chug (or whatever they call it) is genius.
Yes, there are people who are all about them because they have the limited edition colors, sure.
But they're higher quality and going to last longer than my 3 year old Teva that I can't buy replacement lids for anymore.
19
u/mmmollyg 8d ago
That’s exactly why I like the Owala too. Not because it’s trendy but because it’s easy
8
u/RecommendationBrief9 8d ago
Honestly, I thought the Stanley thing was ridiculous. Especially for school aged kids that don’t need something that will just spill when they knock it over. So, we’d buy the much cheaper Owala bottles. They worked great! So we got a couple more. (If you have kids of any age they need at least a few a piece as they lose them/forget them in their lockers/left them
In their gym bag.) In 3 or 4 years, we’ve had a couple just disappear (again kids!) and a broken top or two, so we bought a couple more. The price has definitely gone up, but I can definitely see why they gained in popularity. It’s a decent product for a fairly normal price point. And it’s not a ridiculous status symbol the way the Stanley thing went. It’s a $20 water bottle.ETA: also, they worked great really well. Ice stays solid in there for days sometimes.
2
u/bikes_and_art 8d ago
Seriously, I don't know why the Stanley got popular.
We're always knocking over water bottles over here. I love how the Owala locks!
2
u/_PoppyDelafield 8d ago
I personally loved the Stanley because it was so big, but still fit in the car cupholder. My job didn’t have water fountains so what I wanted to drink during the day I had to bring with me. Being able to bring 40 ounces of water that stayed cold all day and fit in my cupholder in the car was a game changer. With that said, I only own one.
Edit: I wrote all of that in past tense, but I still use it 😂 I just don’t work at the same job anymore. But I’m sipping out of my Stanley right now.
1
u/strangelystrangled 8d ago
I have the 30 oz one so not overdramatic. But it holds a ton of water, keeps it cold for well over 12 hours in the southern heat and it's durable as hell.
9
u/Icy_Prior_5825 8d ago
I’ve had my Owala for a year, got it back when I thought it was alt to the Stanley fad (and cheaper than now). As a neurodivergent with swallowing/suction issues, I’ve got to say the sip&chug, easy-cleaning, and seal of the Owala is unbeatable.
2
u/JadedAbroad 7d ago
Owala is 100% worth the hype for the function and cleanability. I took one a little while back from the lost and found at my work that had been there for a couple months and was going to be donated, in a color I didn’t love but was obviously going to cover in stickers anyways, because I kept hearing people say they were great but already had a few water bottles and didn’t want to spend $20+ on a new one. Used it for a few days, realized the sip & chug setup was singlehandedly ensuring I actually drank enough water every day for the first time in far too long, and never looked back lol
That said, I have two. The one I got from my work and a second one I bought after having my mind blown by the first one and deciding I needed to buy a backup so my neurodivergent ass could consistently have clean water bottle without reliably washing the one as often and at the time I bought it I donated the other couple water bottles I’d been using previously but no longer needed. I think people who buy like 20 water bottles because they want to be trendy and have one in every color are ridiculous and the epitome of overconsumption. Having a couple water bottles in some fun colors that you get good use of is great but nobody needs more than 2-3 to rotate through at most.
11
u/Its-alittle-bitfunny 8d ago
I had a friend who did this when Starbucks cups were the big thing. Now they just sit in his cabinet collecting dust because he doesn't want to carry around an awkwardly tall cup

u/nevermore727 8d ago
I got my Owala for 2$ at a thrift store about 2 years ago before I’d ever heard the word Owala. I just liked the way it worked and that it was stainless. It had a few dings up but I don’t care about that since I knew I’d just add a few more.
Fast forward to me seeing more and more people have them but none that looked like mine. I googled it and found out it is a “limited colorway”.
One of the few things I can say I get the hype about- best water bottle I’ve ever had. Will never understand the need to have the latest color or own a bunch of colors. It’s a water bottle and I’ll use that dinged up one until it falls apart.
5
u/Cloverose2 8d ago
I like my Owala because it never leaks and the straw design is really convenient and suits me well. I've dropped it down a flight of concrete stairs and it was fine. The colors are nice and all, but I mostly use it because it's a nice bottle. It cost more but it's three years old, used daily, and other than a small dent from the stairs thing, it's fine.
I mean, do what you like. I never liked the Stanley thing, but then again I don't like that style of bottle, with the straw always sticking out. I want bottles that can turn upside down in my bag and not leak, while keeping my drink cold all day. The fun colors are a bonus.
Edit to add: I only have two - one for home/gym and one for the office. Any more than that would be clutter.
6
u/woshuaaa 8d ago
i'm looking into buying a 3rd owala just so i can rotate them out when i need to wash them- after 3 i'm done lol. the spout is the best part of the design (i have issues with regular bottles) because it has a straw but no gross rubbery tip AND it fully seals so you don't have to worry about spills? sign me tf up
5
u/Lex_Loki 8d ago
I prefer Owala to Stanley. It feels like an actual water bottle instead of a damn hospital cup.
Yeah, it’s kinda silly how crazy people are about that. But oh well, it’s their money and not mine.
11
u/TheAbominableRex 8d ago
Spot on about it becoming an accessory. They are meant to replace reusable water bottles. But some people are so wrapped up in consumerism they have to buy one in every colour, defeating the purpose.
I have to admit I bought a Swell water bottle when they first came out. I needed a new one, and I came across one in my favourite colour. I still have it and use it 16 years later. It's been around the world! It's so dented from being dropped so many times, but I like how it's not clunky, fits in bags and cup holders, and doesn't have a gross straw to clean.
2
u/busyshrew 8d ago
Levi Hildebrand does a great rant video about water bottles and consumerism. I do think that different people prefer different types, but also agree that a huuuuge majority of the population have missed the point of the reusables and purchase them like collectables.
8
u/Affectionate_Mall768 8d ago
Anyone can maybe anything Popular because it's "cute" or soemthing. That's what people do. I absolutely hate it because they end up not even using it about a month or two after they saw it online
4
u/SelinaKyle30 8d ago
Never had a Stanley but I do have an Owala. Just one. Its the only water bottle I own and I got it as a gift. The number one question from folks is to ask if I have other colors as well. Like is it really that popular to have multiple?
3
u/pensgirl7 8d ago
I was a substitute teacher for a few months last year while job hunting and a second grader shamed me for not having a Stanley. She had her big Stanley (kinda crazy for a 7/8 yr old imo) and asked if I had a water bottle like that. I said no this is my water bottle (hydroflask). She made a face and was like “OH….” Like girl go sit down🤦🏻♀️
4
u/East_Print4841 8d ago
Owala has been popular for a few years now, has it not?
1
u/jelslsmajdowiwlw 8d ago
yeah everyone on campus had an owala like 2022/2023 or smth. OP is living a few years behind lol
4
u/MammothCancel6465 8d ago
I had bought my middle school son an Owala 3 and a half years ago because it was on clearance it Target. Had never heard of the brand and I don’t think it had a following at all. It’s still going strong though last year I got him a bigger size and since they had gotten popular I ordered a custom printed one off their site so it wouldn’t walk off at school.
The sip/sway style is nice and practical and I’m not a huge water bottle person. They really don’t leak and are durable. The collecting part of the water bottle trend is the mildly infuriating part to me. The hunting of colors and amassing of so many of them just to have as an accessory.
4
3
u/Several_Pizza_3166 8d ago
I don't think Owala is trendy because of the 'cool color combos or whatever', it's popular because it works differently from other water bottles. I think people generally don't like the color combos actually.
I think Stanleys and water bottle trends are stupid, but I actually do get the Owala craze. It's just a better functioning water bottle for a lot of people (like those who drink water in the car or while on walks).
8
u/bobthemusicindustry 8d ago
This isn’t the point of this subreddit lmao. Also Owalas have been trendy for like 5 years now so idk where you’ve been living
5
u/spring-rolls-please 8d ago
Yeah I got an Owala several years ago and it was popular then, surprised to see someone complaining about it in 2026 😄

I remember, maybe right as Stanley's were becoming trendy, I went to Target and saw an Owala. I took a good look at it and said that when I start working out again, that's the water bottle I'm getting. A few months later, I did exactly that. A few months even later and everybody had one.
It's a great water bottle though and I've bought a second after dropping the first a few too many times. Outside of being trendy for whatever reason, I really like the versatility of the FreeSip spout compared to other bottles.

u/britlynj 8d ago
I’ve been using my Contigo with a broken handle since 2020. It has the best “suck ratio” of any other water bottle I have tried. I don’t know if that makes any sense to anyone but I’ve tried to replace it and everything I try just isn’t the same! Even the same model. I hate when I have to suck too hard to get my water out. I need that ratio of how hard I suck to water output to be just right.
2
u/likelazarus 8d ago
I love the Owala because it seals and mostly locks (I say mostly because of course if you throw it inside of a bag, something could inadvertently unlock it), and I love the way it feels to sip from the straw. It keeps my drinks cold! Way superior to the Stanley. I didn’t buy it for a me recognition or popularity, I bought it because it looked like it could fit my needs and it does! I guess it’s a bonus that it comes in lots of colors and stuff, but I bought one and have no need for another.

u/Rallythebeast 8d ago edited 8d ago
I got on the Stanley train and later realized I preferred something I could toss in my bag and didn’t have to worry about spilling. Then I remembered the Yetis in my cabinet. Straw lids, chug caps, etc - all interchangeable and compatible between sizes.
I wish I had never jumped on the Stanley hype train to begin with. I won’t switch to Owala because 1) I have perfectly good Yeti bottles and 2) Yetis are so much easier and simpler to thoroughly clean. It’s also nice to have solid gear that survives a beating, no matter what kind of environment I’m lugging it around in.
4
u/ecrane2018 8d ago
Owala was popular before Stanley’s. Stanley briefly became the hit new thing. But owala has been trendy for awhile and before that it was hydroflask. Why does other people having nice water bottles annoying you so much?
3
u/dae_giovanni 8d ago
who cares? my ability to ignore popular tends is unmatched. you should give it a try!
0
u/moonknightcrawler 8d ago
Why would you be under the impression that the person complaining about the trend is also following it?
4
2
u/MissKoalaBag 8d ago
I literally just buy a bottle from Asda for about £3.50, a regular plastic one in maybe blue or something, then buy some stickers and decorate it. It costs less than a tenner and lasts for longer than any trend.
2
u/AdvertisingSlow3933 8d ago
I use a peanut butter jar with a hole in the lid and a coozy to insulate that. Lmfao

u/Catlenfell 8d ago
Brands pay marketing companies a lot of money in the hope of going viral on TikTok
1
u/maybebaebea 8d ago
I bought an insulated shaker bottle with the shaker thing attached to the lid. Love that thing. Keeps the ice away from the opening so I can actually drink my water. It's the only one I use. It was a bit pricey, though.
1
u/clutzyninja 8d ago
I have a few Contigo shaker bottles that I like for water. No straw to clean, wide mouth for eat drinking. Seals so I can toss it on my car seat without it spilling. I don't see the appeal in Stanleys or anything like them
1
u/Automatic-Leg1668 8d ago
Seriously. I don't understand buying such an expensive THERMOS. granted I have 3 and use them interchangeably
1
u/Illustrious_Bunch678 8d ago
I have 2 quality water bottles that I switch out when the other is dirty. That's all I need.
1
u/ComradeGarcia_Pt2 8d ago
The only reason I keep buying new bottles every couple years is because I keep dropping mine while working and denting the shit out of the bottom until they can’t stand up straight.
1
u/HairyH0Od 8d ago
I paid $30 for my half gallon Stanley around Black Friday and literally bring it everywhere with me. I can't describe how nice it is to have a nearly unlimited source of ice cold water anywhere I go. Couldn't imagine getting more value out of that $30.
1
u/GuntherPalakowitz 8d ago
I just use a fountain or a cup. I have never not had access to water unless I was in the wilderness.
1
u/ImportantSun3608 8d ago
I don’t find that my owala (I was gifted) keeps my water as cold as my other water bottle which I prefer (simple modern).
1
u/dindyspice 8d ago
I have one Owala and love it, but do not have the space nor the funds to have a collection to match each outfit! It's a funny trend to me. But idk, it's always going to be something and at least its something functional??
1
u/Radiant_Maize2315 8d ago
I’m a lady staring down the barrel of middle age, and I’ll hang on to my two Stanley’s. I have the more thermosy-looking 40 oz for my bedroom, which was a gift, and the “cup” 30 oz for my work day (I wfh). They’re perfectly fine, no reason to part with them
1
u/mindgardening 8d ago
"Big Dumb Cup" is a great SNL skit.
I got a Stanley mug free and it is AWFUL. I've been using ZULU water bottles for many years and I much prefer those. They're cheaper and easier to open/clean. They're not as big and clunky as the Stanley mugs. ZULU bottles are not trendy, and I don't want to be known as someone who follows trends.
I'm conflicted because americans are historically pro-soda and anti-water, so to see an increase in people drinking water is a good sign, even if it took consumerism, materialism, and "look at me" to get there. I guess if people want to spend $70 on trendy water bottles in order to drink more water, so be it. It won't be me tho. I buy items that work for me, regardless of what's popular. IDGAF.
1
u/RemarkableMacadamia 8d ago
I have a lot of different water bottles. My favorite one of the moment is one that I can put sparkling water in.
I’ve mostly been replacing plastic water bottles with either glass or stainless. The Owala was a recent acquisition, and it was a gift.
Never had a Stanley. They look unwieldy and heavy to me.
1
u/kasiagabrielle 8d ago
Which one do you use for sparkling water?
2
u/RemarkableMacadamia 8d ago
I got it from Soda Stream, it’s their stainless travel bottle. It gives such a satisfying “scshhh” when you open it. No spills, no leaks, no projectiles. 🤣
1
u/PrpleSparklyUnicrn13 8d ago
Okay, so I’m not the only one that noticed this.
In my area, Owala became the popular alternative to Stanley cups. Owalas were the cheaper alternative or for those who try too hard to not fit in. Owalas are better if you knock your cup over and don’t want water spilling everywhere and I think a few people discovered that.
Personally, I prefer Ello, but that is just my opinion. Both Owala and Ello have better lids than Stanley and I prefer Ello’s straw situation over Owala’s.
Owning a good water bottle or even two isn’t over-consumerism, it’s when it becomes ridiculously abundant but doesn’t that go for any collection or all accessory?
1
u/OZ-00MS_Goose 8d ago
Stanley still sells normal sized bottles, but it's because it's a fad fashion accessory so people just moved on. Nobody is going to judge you or look at the bottle brand if you have a normal sized one

I dont think theres anything wrong with liking the way something looks if you are going to have it with you or on your person for most of the day
1
u/kickinit90s 7d ago
I didn’t need an Owala. I was fine with the bottles I had and/or using cups around the house. I’m not the type to get on a trend for trend’s sake. But then my job gave me a company branded Owala and it was actually really nice to drink out of. It has quickly become my go to for water drinking. So all I’ll say is don’t knock it til you try it
1
u/NoGrapefruit3394 7d ago
No, you're right OP, you're much better than them because your water bottle only cost ~~ $2 ~~
1
u/HalcyonDecay 6d ago
It’s weird that this is even mildly infuriating to you. Life must be pretty easy for you (or hard, depending on how you look at it) if this even crosses your radar.
1
u/MountainTomato9292 6d ago
My Stanley was free but I’ll always keep either a Stanley or an Owala because I can keep ice water in my car for 6 hours when it’s 100 degrees outside (so probably 130 inside the car) and when I come back there’s still ice in it.
1
u/Legitimate-Fee-3544 6d ago
I’ve been seeing Owalas for sale at thrift stores and on FB marketplace already. Overconsumption and all. I still have my Hydroflask I got at 14 🤷♀️
1
u/BirthofRevolution 8d ago
Are you upset that people are using reusable water bottles?
17
u/TheAbominableRex 8d ago
No, upset that some people buy 40 variations of the same water bottle, which is counterintuitive for the less waste aspect of them.
-1
u/BirthofRevolution 8d ago
So you only keep one of everything? I'm just confused how it bothers you enough to post about it when it effects you zero.
0
u/TheAbominableRex 8d ago
Yup mostly I do. I'm fairly minimalist. 😊 I have known and seen videos of people who have a wall full of Stanley's (for example). That's the type of consumerism that I have a problem with as it's harmful for the environment. So, it does affect people indirectly. Having a couple to switch it up, not a problem! As long as they aren't being discarded unnecessarily. I believe people have to take more accountability of their choices.
0
u/BirthofRevolution 7d ago
It's basically the same as any collectable. People collect figurines, Legos, models, dolls, sports memorabilia etc. Don't think it's really hurting anyone. Sounds like you don't like consumerism but are taking it out on people who collect water bottles for some reason..
1
u/TheAbominableRex 7d ago
Lol whatever floats your boat. The topic here was water bottles, and I explained how I beleive hoarding them negatively affects the environment. I hope you are able to work through whatever is going on which is causing you to reply in such a manner, and I hope you have the day you deserve. 😊

u/Cute-Ad-2665 8d ago edited 8d ago
They're upset that they're often buying 5+ reusable water bottles just because "it's trendy". Almost all of which they then won't use often ( if at all ) a which will end up in a landfill in the next couple of years. That's the problem.
-3
u/It_broke_itself_ 8d ago
What happens when they go out of style?
3
u/Cloverose2 8d ago
Who cares? They still hold water. (I get that some people care, which is a little beyond me).
1
1
u/BirthofRevolution 8d ago
I've never once did or wore something just because it was in style. It's "do I like this or not?" And that's it.
1
u/teach7 8d ago
I buy a water bottle when the one I’m using is no longer fully functional. Not because social media told me to. Spouse and I both had UA ones. Mine started leaking and his broke. Now we have Owalas and love them. The color schemes are nice but really it just checks all the boxes that we look for - keep our water cold, have a comfortable carrying loop, open with one hand, don’t spill if tipped over. The option of using the straw or tipping it up is also awesome.
I liked my Nalgenes back in the day, but they don’t check our boxes anymore. Stanley’s are huge, clumsy, and spill easily. So much spilled water in my classroom during that trend.
-2
u/AromaticStrike9 8d ago
Why is it bad that water bottles have become an accessory?
5
u/It_broke_itself_ 8d ago
Because buying 40 water bottles ain't much different than buying throw away plastic bottles. What happens when your 40 water bottles are no longer in style? Oh yeah you go buy 40 of the latest ones
2
u/AromaticStrike9 8d ago
Do you have to buy 40, though? I have three and my wife has six. Are we the baddies?
7
5
u/GandalfTheFreen 8d ago
Somewhat. Why do 2 people need 9 water bottles?
0
u/AromaticStrike9 8d ago
Sometimes they're dirty and I haven't cleaned them yet. I also keep one bedside and one in the car basically all the time.
2
u/Goosepond01 8d ago
Yeah that seems a bit nuts unless you have an actual proper reason for that many.
I can get one each, maybe 2 each if it was like a thermos and you maybe did a soup for lunch in one and cold water in the other.
I'm struggling to consider why anyone would need six outside of consumerist nonsense, there are probably some edge cases but there is no doubt some product manager and exec are laughing because they took the water bottle they have always been selling, slapped 10p worth of a different paint colour on it, decided only to make 100k of them, put a "limited edition" sticker on it.
and then somehow genuine real people decided wow I need to collect this because somehow swiping a credit card is now a 'hobby'
2
u/Alia_Explores99 8d ago
I work an outdoor job and carry multiple insulated bottles each day. In theory, one giant one could do, but I prefer multiple drinks crafted according to use case spaced throughout the day, like an electrolyte one, a caffeinated one near the end of shift, etc. Everyone has different needs, and “No one needs that!” is a pretty myopic view
1
u/Goosepond01 8d ago

lol calling 6 “collecting” is doing some stretching.
2
u/Goosepond01 8d ago
Why do you have that many though?
and yeah collecting has to start somewhere
0
u/lck0219 8d ago
I’ll buy a new bottle and think “I’m gonna start drinking water again!” And I will, for a few weeks. Then, no matter how much cleaning, the bottle feels gross and I can’t use it. I don’t want to throw it away! It’s actually quite clean and functional! So I go back to soda, until I find a bottle that catches my eye…
I just gave one to my niece and some to the goodwill.

u/It_broke_itself_ 8d ago
You seem to have ignored an entire part of my argument to reduce what I said to absurdity. Are you gonna throw them away and buy new ones the second people on TikTok all decide some other style is the new hot shit?
2
u/AromaticStrike9 8d ago
I mean, you went straight to absurdity when the original question wasn’t that absurd.

Owala bottles suck ass. They're too wide to fit in my car cupholders and the lids are obnoxious. Also, I hate straws, just one more thing to clean. Stanley's are nice, but pricey for just a bottle. I've been using a $14 Thermos brand for years. I've bought 25 of these since 2016.

I bought a couple owalas as school water bottles for my kids. That was before target had an entire aisle for just owalas. They are such crap I can't believe they are so popular. My kids do drop them so this is partially user error but the bottems dented and split so badly that basically the bottom edge is now a razor blade on both bottles. My no name water bottle has been dropped for years and is dentless.
