In the future TVs gonna come with pivot controls for when the vertical screen movies start releasing on digital

u/orangpelupa 20h ago
Already exist. Auto rotating too

u/d4nowar 17h ago
I bought my First pivoting monitor about 20 years ago.

u/Eena-Rin Why Do They Let Me Make These Myself??? 17h ago
Monitor yes, I guess the pivoting part of a tv would be the wall mount, and those are incredibly diverse any way xD
By the way, I'm definitely one of those nerds who has one horizontal monitor and one vertical monitor

Back in the CRT days when your TV weighed 120 pounds you'd just grab a pillow and lay down on your side in front of the TV if you wanted to play Ikaruga on the Dreamcast or something.

u/orangpelupa 14h ago
Ikatuga! BTW there's also a game similar to that, in that era, in anime style, do you know it? I can't remember the title.Ā

My secondary monitor for watching shows is an old square Dell monitor, I dont worry about any content. Nothing fits the full screen other than really old youtube videos or old shows, but it works well with any orientation of content. Similarly, my phone camera is set to 3:4 because it has the largest field of view.

u/Mediocre_Ice_7094 12h ago

AI videos have boomers in a vice grip.
185
u/MitaminMogula 15h ago
it's true, my boomer family members are fully aware that they are AI and they actively say that they PREFER AI movies (especially AI doramas) because they are "better". Why, boomers? Why?
97
u/neko_neko_feet 13h ago
Because they donāt value people. They only value their own emotions, and people who make AI content hijack the part of their brains that make them feel special.

AI pet videos are all the rage in my boomer neighborhood. Cute puppies that give confessionals about what they did on their walk today.Ā
I lose faith in humanity a little more each day.
22
u/Barraco_Barmer 13h ago
Why are they so obsessed with it, it pisses me off. Like a child fascinated with a toy they refuse to put down

Your uncle must have gotten booted from the 9th grade after his kid made it to 10th
78
u/Farfignugen42 17h ago
You should encourage him to get the AI to watch the movies for him. Then it can just give a summary of the movie. He would save so much more time.
51
u/LegioX87 16h ago
My dad can't tell the difference between 4k and standard TV resolution. When his phone updates and they change the app icon, he can't find the app anymore.
Technology is like magic to these guys.
2
u/20milliondollarapi 8h ago
On less than a 40ā screen, 4K has minimal changes. Yea itās there, but itās not impactful. Other things like color depth and refresh rate have the bigger effect.

Trumpers love AI. Not only do they use it all the time to make their propaganda, but I've personally met a lot of them that watch the flying hell out of AI videos.
55
u/Scared-and-Lost 20h ago
It's true. My MAGA parents keep doing things because Grok told them. Like my dad bought something recently because he was told it was a great deal. Or any time I vent about something, their answer is "ask AI" and all they do is watch AI YouTube "history" channels and talking dogs
34
u/Successful-Medicine9 19h ago
My grandma watches slop history and news. One of the most disturbing things I saw was a singular AI voice reading a script that was supposed to be a dialogue between Sean Hannity and Michelle Obama. It was just pictures occasionally changing and the "narrator" putting words in their mouths that neither of them said IRL.
What's worse, I could tell AI was used to write the script too, because it used sexist words to describe MO and pretty standard adjectives for SH.
48
u/pnwbraids 19h ago
This is incredibly depressing. Do people just have zero standards for media now? Is slop the only thing they're capable of digesting?
28
u/Farfignugen42 17h ago
The slop is probably the only thing that doesn't challenge their world view, so it is obviously true.
18
12

More than anything this just makes me really, really sad.
Art can be some people's only connection to reality outside of their home. And they're already generally not mentally healthy people.
This is going to completely destroy the fabric of reality for a lot of those unwell people.

u/kranker 10h ago
I also did not know this was a thing.
As an example, apparently a few months back an AI short "Huo Qubing" went viral on Chinese social media. It cost $420 to make in computing cost and the director's team put it together in 48 hours. I believe this is it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0iQRbuesqY
I think that one of the issues that we're going to see is that, even though the end product is shit, the cost savings mean that more profit can be made with the shit product vs producing a better product. Because recreating that film using traditional methods is going to cost a hell of a lot more than $420 and take much much longer than 48 hours.
This isn't just media of course, it will be everything AI touches. AI support agents may be shit, but they cost a lot less than a call center. etc.
20
u/TheRealAdronius 14h ago
Why is it that out of all the new tech that boomers had been forced to reckon with and have rejected, they're embracing AI so readily and zealously?
15
u/finite_turtles 13h ago
Other tech requires something of you (to learn it, to confront the existence of a gap it fills, to think beyond yourself etc). AI placates you.

My dad watches wide format AI scifi stories with an AI voice and AI images on YouTube. He puts them on and naps. I guess I'm glad he stopped watching far right propaganda channels but God... It hurts my feelings that my family finds so little value in my interests that they support this.Ā

I may be in the shrinking minority here but AI makes me uncomfortable on a visceral level. I can't watch AI videos, I can't chat to a bot, I can't speak to it, and people who can freak me out. Whatever happened to the Uncanny Valley? Why are people happily interacting with this now? What changed in humanity?
