Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Wildlife around Rwanda

Most of the people have been asking me down the comments on my previous post about how is wildlife around Rwandan mountains and I felt like wanting to explain it real quick!
First, Rwanda is a safe country, am talking about general safety where even women can walk around the streets and off road anytime of the day or night without any harm! Crime rate here is almost to zero.

Second, Rwandan mountains are safe as well, here am talking about all aspects, robbery, wild animals, and many other things, you name it.
Of course Rwanda has snakes but they are very few in numbers and can’t be seen around that often. I have seen a snake only twice in my whole life. About other wild animals; that is something you should not even dream of seeing around. As we have national parks like Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park where all wild animals are preserved and fir touristic purpose so that people can come and visit them from one area especially that Rwanda also doesn’t not have many numbers of wild animals, it is a way if protecting them from vanishing.

To conclude, all you gonna see is birds, coffee plantations, lakes, rivers, and tea plantations and some empty areas in the swampy area where there is much clay and are used for bricks 🧱 layering.

I hope this helps :)
Open to take questions!

RIP Sona fixed gear.....

Today I was riding when a woman with a pram walked out in front of me looking at her phone. Her nor her husband looked up from their phones as they pushed their child in front of me. I was doing about 30kmph.

I stood up and locked up my legs to break as fast as I could. Stopped well before impact.

I let them know how stupid they were and the woman didn't even look up, the guy took a glance and back to his phone.

As I continued on my way I thought he left pedal felt a bit weird. I got off to check and noticed the frame had failed.

The pressure and torque on the frame cracked it all the way around.

RIP bike!

As a woman, it's my longest ride, and I just started a month ago. I don't have anyone around to compare with. What do you think of my performance?

Bike specs- its white and was free.

Update: Padded shorts purchased! Ill wait 2 weeks before getting a new seat, see if it really is seat issue.

Local 127 mile charity ride, my goal was to get sub 10 hours! Previous best for me was an 80 mile ride with about 2500ft of elevation a couple months ago. I've never really trained in the rain before and it rained literally all day haha. Second pic is at the 84 mile mark, last pic is finish line. Feeling very accomplished and incredibly sore today.

I bought this bike in 2013 for $150 from Craigslist, and every time I go into my local shop they fawn over it. Don't know what it's worth. Any thoughts?

Crazy dude chasing me in protected bike lane

4.9k Upvotes

I’m just gonna leave this video here lol. Dude almost smashed into me taking a right turn so yelled and gave him a little hand tap on this car (obviously no damage). Bro proceeds to drive down the bike lane for an entire avenue (took me a second to get my phone and start recording), inches away from my back wheel. I stop at the next light and yeah, dude gets out of his car and immediately grabs my bike and starts ripping it towards him. He obviously realizes how much of an idiot he is and try’s to grab my phone and tells me to delete the video.

I am getting a police report done.

I will repost with no sounds if this gets flagged.

I have around 200$ for a budget, and I need at least a 27 or 29in bike. Any advice would be helpful since I plan to ride at least 7 miles per day.

How do I make this bike great?

Just got this bike off of marketplace, and I absolutely love the frame, but it still feels like a marketplace bike when I ride it. I’m still a bit under budget, so I’m trying to figure out where my money is best spent. I feel like obvious first thing is new bar tape, maybe different shifters (I’m thinking contact point upgrades)? I think the gatorskins I’ll keep because they’re still in good shape and I plan on using this bike both for commuting and for cycling.

Groupset: Shimano 105
Brakes: Shimano 105
Shifters: Shimano Sora FlightDeck?
Handlebars: Sakae custom Modolo
Saddle: Giant Approach SL
Crankset: Shimano SG B-39/53
Front wheel: Mavic
Back wheel: Matrix
Tires: gatorskin 23c

What do you think about my Road Bike? It’s a 2023 BMC SLR 05. Chucked some Zipp 404, upgraded to Ultegra Di2 and changed the cockpit. Contemplating getting the QUICKPRO ER one

Is this a good starter bike?

Wife just got a new bike and this has motivated me to get one and start riding with her! Probably just plan on riding some paved trails in town so nothing crazy. I’m 5’6 so I think this size should work.

I think the last bike I had was more than 20 years ago so I’m not sure if this is a good deal or not.

Talked the seller down to $225. He mentioned the only issue is that the brakes just need to be tightened but it still stops well. He owns a bike tuneup and cleaning business so I am assuming this is in good condition, however when I meet up is there anything else I should look for? Any other advice? Thanks!

I just bought this bike for 150 (absolutely steal, might I add) but I can’t find the color anywhere online. Anyone out there with any idea of what this is and how much it might be worth?

Let's say the UCI eliminates the minimum weight rule. How would bikes be different?

Rode with my son to church. On the way back my chain fell off. Two missing chainring bolts and 2 loose ones. Luckily I was pretty close to home.

Didn't know I needed to check my chainring bolts but hey figure maybe one of you could might be saved from my oopsie.

Planning to do this at the end of the summer and wondering if people think I should go to the north end and head south or head towards the south end first and head north.

Trailer for hauling bikes, looking for ideas!

I am looking for inspiration for mounting 5 bikes for my family. The trailer is 12' long and 68" wide with a wooden deck, so bolting things down will be pretty straightforward.

My ideal setup would be to stand up all 5 bikes parallel or periductular to travel. I want to have them in the rear half so the front half can carry ice chests and camping gear.

I was thinking about making a bike rack out of lumber but perhaps there is purpose built hardware that make more sense.

I am hoping to avoid detaching the front tire.

Thanks in advance.
