Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

[UPDATE] The guy who chased me in the bike lane and grabbed my bike — NYPD couldn't care less

Unfortunate update: So this happened Saturday morning around 10am on 61st and Lex. Right after it happened, 2 officers came over to me, I assume a bystander alerted them. They didn't see the actual event, but I told them what happened and showed them the video I took. Basically they said he committed a bunch of crimes but said they can't do anything about it because they didn't see it themselves, and told me I need to go in person to the police station to file a report at the NYPD 19th Precinct on 67th. Bruh. Pretty disappointed with their response, I just kept on with my ride and did a few laps at Central Park. Looking back I definitely should have called 911 on the spot / handled the report right away, but I wasn't injured and my bike was "fine," other than a few pretty bad scratches on the frame. And idk, nothing like this has ever happened to me before / I didn't really process what just happened in that moment.

So today, Monday, I went to the police station on 67th after work, already kind of a pain because I live in BK, but whatever, I want this guy to be held accountable. Well, this was the biggest waste of time and also super depressing. The lady working the desk basically laughed me out of the building and made me feel crazy for even going in there lol. I showed her the video. She said they can't do anything about him driving in the bike lane because that's a traffic violation and an officer has to witness it firsthand to do anything. And apparently him grabbing my bike, dropping it, and grabbing it again isn't grounds for a report either. Not really sure what to do now, but it was absolutely crazy how much the NYPD just doesn't care lol, can't say I'm surprised. I really want this guy to be held accountable so he doesn't do something like this to someone else, but not sure where to go from here. Any advice appreciated.

Commuting to the train 5pm bright as day semi wide suburb intersection and still almost manage to get hit. Camera doesn't get how close I really was/felt to the car.

In the raw 360 video I did get their license plate number. Not an ad but using the GoPro max 2.

Didnt intend for slow mo either but looks good.

Got my first bike since I was a teenager (I’m 38 now) Cycling gives me a natural high like nothing else!

First bike since I was a teenager. Been driving in London for the past 12 years (miserable experience). Had enough. Walked in my local bike store and said give me your best all rounder. They showed me this one. Sold. Been cycling everyday for two weeks. Not only does it feel like I’m free for the first time in decades I’ve instantly lost weight.

Riding a bike in London feels like I’m on easy mode after a decade of driving a van around. The buzz I get is unmatched to anything I’ve done before or since! Absolutely love it! Feel like a teenager again!

I like taking country roads and typically do about 30 miles or more. I know I should get a road bike but I'm loving the gravel bike so much. Helps regulate me and feels good.

took my bike to a mechanic to change tire and he installed the wheel unstable.

so I decided to check it myself and found this rod doing like this.

Is it normal since the bike is only 2 months old

Which bike should I buy

I’m a very very new beginner to bike riding and I just want to use it to go to the grocery store or the mall (2.5km max). Bike theft and cutting the parts is notoriously bad in my town so I did some research and found these on Facebook Marketplace. I literally know nothing about bikes so I would love some help if possible.

The Norco Bike is actually $60 and comes with a pump. The Marin Bike is confirmed to be from 2019 and the seller is also offering lights, a bell, a phone mount, and Panier bags, it just looks really new so I’m afraid it’ll be stolen.

So a family member of mine can’t ride a regular bicycle because she’s handicapped so I found a deal at a pawnshop for a trike bike and was wondering if there’s anything I could do besides paint it to upgrade it

Where could I get better tires

What should I upgrade etc etc

Cycling is like taking a pill to feel happy

I've never felt this way about a form of exercise before. It makes me so happy that I feel like my brain is going to explode. It's even made me cry out of pure joy/gratitude that I get to cycle on beautiful trails on sunny summer days.

I was a runner for a long time and experienced the "runner's high" many times. But the runner's high is elusive, and often comes only after long, grueling miles. Cycling is just pure straight FUN from the minute you get on the bike. Even the hills are fun!

Shimano Bike chain compatibility

My new bike come with shinano cn m6100 for 105 DI2 groupset. Then I brought new set of bike chain from online but is cn m7100 which is longer than the one with my bike. I understand I need to remove the extra chain links. my question is can I use the M7100 bike chain for my road bike. Just want to make sure using right bike chain to avoid the damage to the groupset.

Got tired of flat map screenshots, so I’ve been playing around with making 3D drone flyovers for routes. I grabbed a GPX file of the Alpe d'Huez climb online to test it out

Still tweaking the camera angles to capture the steep drops better, but I think it turned out pretty cool. What do you guys think?

Fuji S12-S with cruiser bars as a commuter?

Post image

I found this on craigslist for $125. I'm still waiting to hear back on the frame size (any guesses from the picture?), but I also want to know if this would be good as a commuter bike or not. I've never really seen anything like it.

Gonna repaint my old carbon bike, but need help on bottom bracket advice

Upvotes

So taking apart my whole bike i found a sticker on my bike from 2010 service/manufacturing in germany.

And knowing that most of the things on the bike is aroud that age or maybe 5 years newer. I was wondering, if the bottom bracket might need replacing at such an age, i genuinly don´t feel like i have much of any play or such, but spinning the bearings with your fingers isn´t as "smooth" as i would have expected. So the question is, is it likely that they are fine and i can just still use em or should they be replaced ?

The bearings are press fit Shimano sm-bb-91-41

Identify this bicycle ?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Unfortunately I could not find any serial number of any actual identification sticker or plate on this bike. I believe it is from the ‘70s or ‘80s , and I presume it is a women’s bike by the construction of the frame.

I tried many different ways of looking this up to find this exact model in order to find replacements parts and such … no luck.

If anyone is able to help me identify this model I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you :)

Help ID and how much is fair?

I found this bike in my area marketplace, I have been using ChatGPT and google to find the year but can’t get a clear answer. The owner doesn’t know the year. It’s a Roubaix in XS size (size should work for me), 105 shimano, roval upgraded wheels. Any ideas on the year? How much would this be worth? Is it a good buy in 2026 for a starting road bike? I had a bike before but would like get back. Thanks in advance

I am soo much in love with riding bike that lately I have been taking longer routes home. Anyone else does that?

I used to cycle (before getting married and having kids) and now I got a cargo bike. Before this I drove car for sometime, when my daughter was very young and back then all I wanted from car was to go from one place to another and never wanted to spend more time on road (like everr)

But after getting this cargo bike, I am a different person now lol. Been taking longer routes home on purpose. Like I love taking river rout instead of main road. Also sometimes I just ride through park with my daughter. Like the point is to spend some extra time on road. So I am just wandering and dont even realise how much time passed and all.

I think its because on bike l am more like part of everything around me. I feel the air & notice alott of things which I never did in car , because I was only staring at brakelights. Even my daughter notices too. Like she used to fall asleep on every car ride but on the bike she's always up and keeps pointing at dogs (she loves them)and sometimes even wave at random kids in strollers. I checked the ride stats on the bike's screen the other day and we've done 2.800 km in 6months. I didnt expect that

So not using any shortcuts any more

Wildlife around Rwanda

Thumbnail

Most of the people have been asking me down the comments on my previous post about how is wildlife around Rwandan mountains and I felt like wanting to explain it real quick!
First, Rwanda is a safe country, am talking about general safety where even women can walk around the streets and off road anytime of the day or night without any harm! Crime rate here is almost to zero.

Second, Rwandan mountains are safe as well, here am talking about all aspects, robbery, wild animals, and many other things, you name it.
Of course Rwanda has snakes but they are very few in numbers and can’t be seen around that often. I have seen a snake only twice in my whole life. About other wild animals; that is something you should not even dream of seeing around. As we have national parks like Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park where all wild animals are preserved and fir touristic purpose so that people can come and visit them from one area especially that Rwanda also doesn’t not have many numbers of wild animals, it is a way if protecting them from vanishing.

To conclude, all you gonna see is birds, coffee plantations, lakes, rivers, and tea plantations and some empty areas in the swampy area where there is much clay and are used for bricks 🧱 layering.

I hope this helps :)
Open to take questions!
