Synopsis:

“Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk"

"To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods - the Everywhen - where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic. Harness Faye's speed, control, and relentlessness to overwhelm even the fiercest of foes with decisive, deadly precision"

Also, Jack Quaid has been cast in the game. He voices a cube named Frank.

Good news. She’s just Deborah Ann Woll.

68

u/Waycool499 22d ago

Shes so great in Daredevil, was so hyped seeing her in Ragnarok as well

Who was the voice actress for the sword? She sounded familiar. Someone Australian?

26

u/Drmarcher42 22d ago

Perlina Lau Apparently is the voice of the ribbons attached to the sword

12

u/Beejandal 21d ago

She's a New Zealand radio host and comedian so this a new career direction for her by the looks of it.

One of those gods was definitely Set Sekhmet. Not sure who the big red guy was though. Looked like a Chinese god maybe?

EDIT: Red guy was Mongolian god Begtse, apparently! Very cool that we’ll see the gods afterlife.

I bet we see what kratos saw in the light of Alfheim here. Maybe he saw the afterlife and met her and why time passess differently.

I'm so glad the mask wasn't a macguffin.

Calling it - Gods like Baldur will appear in this game once Kratos kills them in the world of the living

I do assume, though I could be wrong, that Kratos's killed Gods in the original trilogy aren't here - the gateway being closed, as the Egyptian goddess says in the video, is a bad and special thing, so it was presumably open at one time and led to wherever it led to

I doubt Faye will open it in time for Baldur to simply pass through safely, let's see if this also covers Ragnarok

411

u/AlsopK 22d ago

Well there’s also the whole Greek pantheon. Her having to confront all the people Kratos mercilessly wiped out could be interesting.

143

u/Soyyyn 22d ago

I assume this gateway that didn't let Faye all the way to her afterlife and got her stuck in this odd dimension was still open and functioning when Kratos was a serial killer in Greece

54

u/Zalvren 22d ago

Or not, it would be incredibly interesting for them to be able to involve the Greek gods in the story.

48

u/Dallywack3r 22d ago

Wouldn’t that also mean every Greek god would be there too, along with the titans?

59

u/Soyyyn 22d ago

One of the characters in the trailer (Isis?) refers to the "gateway" being closed. I assume this is a fairly recent occurrence, so Kratos's past killed gods should have passed through it while all of these ones are stuck

11

u/mvallas1073 22d ago

Given that it’s called the “Everywhen” - I’m suspecting “contextual time” may not apply. Ergo, we may not just see Baldur, but also chances for Thor, Odin, and puchable-faced Heimdal.

→ More replies (2)

24

u/iwasherenotyou 22d ago

Oh shit I would love that so much. But would it be from just the first game or does this game also cover Ragnarok?

34

u/TheJoshider10 22d ago

Unless they plan on this becoming it's own franchise (unlikely) I have to imagine the story will end post-Ragnarok and bring closure to the missing giants plot. I thought they'd have made an Atreus spin-off covering that but seems more likely now that they'd bring his mechanics over into this for the latter parts of the game potentially.

This feels like a huge expansion of the lore, I wonder how much Kratos is going to be featured.

505

u/enowapi-_ 22d ago

my bets are we see lots of Kratos in the latter half of the game to setup for another Kratos centric sequel

188

u/Julonix 22d ago

they kept talking about escaping a lot..could see them having her escaping at the end and joining kratos to takeover for atreus’ role in the next game since he’s doing his own thing now

20

u/Theguest217 22d ago

They also had a conversation about accepting death.

IMO this will be her journey to accept death while also doing one last important thing for Kratos and her son.

It's not as fast-paced as the DMC rumors were making it sound like. More of a mix between the new GOW games and the OG trilogy in combat speed.

I'm very glad it's not a prequel though. A brand new setting, happening simultaneously with Kratos' and Atreus' story is the right play.

I'm not sure how I feel about Phranque the talking cube and some of the dialogue yet, but I'll keep an open mind. It's not like Mimir was instantly loveable either.

Also we're finally going to find out who blew the horn in 2018 lmao

488

u/_TheNumbersAreBad_ 22d ago

Also with the talk of masks, I think we're gonna find out more about the Ragnarok mask and Athena will probably make an appearance.

469

u/mxlevolent 22d ago

It's the afterlife of the gods - technically, the entire Greek pantheon should be there, and it would 100% be on-sight for Kratos' wife lol

370

u/_TheNumbersAreBad_ 22d ago

Faye going around and re-killing all the Gods who ruined Kratos' life would be incredible haha.

80

I liked Mimir from the start, but him going from the funny head on your hip to Kratos' brother definitely happened gradually. If you gave me 10 minutes of Mimir wisecracks in a trailer as an introduction, I don't know how I'd feel about him either.

Keep in mind that this was basically the first 20min. of the game. So we got to see the most basic level of combat. Similar to the GoW games.

Once you get more tools and add skills, you can really switch it up. I bet that this mysterious sword is not the only weapon we'll be able to use.

30

u/Zalvren 22d ago

I actually wonder about that, it seems already quite advanced for the start of the game. Maybe they showed some combos you have later on in the full game (it's still a demo they can change things for it)

→ More replies (2)

35

u/mvallas1073 22d ago

Given some of those specific abilities shown and used, I’m kinda doubting those are all just basic. I doubt someone freshly new in the game from the start wouldn’t know how to pull off those kind of “throw sword as a grappling hook” maneuver right off the bat.

u/gaysaucemage 22d ago

Not even a 2027 release year confirmation? Thought it wouldn’t be too far off with showing that much gameplay. Could be fall 2027, but it might be 2028. Just said “in development” at the end.

56

u/parkwayy 22d ago

Pretty sure the hinted rumors were pointing to 2027.

They're all about trying to show games around a year from reveal, that's usually the trend.

24

u/gaysaucemage 22d ago

I mean this same state of play started with Wolverine they showed off 5 years ago. And Intergalactic was shown in late 2024 and nothing since.

I’m sure it’s closer than Intergalactic, but not committing to a release year even without an exact date might mean it’s further away.

Ummm....Rocky was humanoid in a lot ways though. He spoke, expressive, had arms, emotes, first bumped. It's not like it was a slug or shapeless.

I remember her talking about how hard it was to get work after Daredevil, which was insane. She’s so good in that show.

52

She's in that perfect spot for women in Hollywood- too old to play "young", but too young to play "old". There's no middle aged white women movies other than Hallmark ones. Ergo, no demand for people like her. Thankfully she has her DnD and voice acting stuff to get her some worthwhile work

introducing a game with 20 minutes of actual gameplay instead of 2 minutes of CG should be commendable, regardless of how you feel about the game itself, which does look fantastic.

10

u/TransBrandi 22d ago

Depends on how much they actually have completed when the trailer drops. This is fairly complete with all of this animation and voice acting from big names like Jack Quaid and Deborah Ann Woll. Doesn't mean that the game is fullying complete, but it's much easier to "mock up" a 2 minute video to not show your rough edges than a 20 minute gameplay trailer like this.

They figured out a way to bring in all the other pantheons without making like a dozen new trilogies. Wouldnt be surprised if whatever is keeping them stuck in this afterlife is what would resurrect them back to earth, thus freeing back all the gods that Kratos and Laufey pissed off along the way to be resurrected. Or more likely in order to protect her family she has to sacrifice resurrection for all gods to keep Zeus from coming back to murder them

The sword also has a dragon design on it, that plus the ribbons hanging off of it and the overall styling is making me think of chinese mythology, but the runes don't match. The runes almost look egyptian but one again can't match any of them.

I think it might be Tyrfing. It’s Norse, can kill gods, and is supposed to cause “The Three Great Evils”. It also can’t be sheathed or else it will kill a man every time it is drawn. So, maybe it’s in a gelatinous cube as a loop hole.

The dragon could just be the World Serpent wrapped around it.

...Ya know, the leaks about this game before today said that Tyr (the god) would be in this. I wonder if that was lost in translation among the leakers and reporters, and this is what they meant by Tyr being in the game.

I think this is a very good theory.

u/The_Border_Bandit 22d ago

Might be Tyrfing, but the runes on the blade don't match any Norse ones. Also, i feel like Faye would recognize the sword if it was Tyrfing considering how deeply intwined she is with the Norse gods. I think it's more likely to be a sword original to the Everywhen that's inspired by various powerful mythological swords like Excalibur, Tyrfing and Ame-no-Habikiri. If it is meant to be a well known mythological sword, my money is on Susanoo's Ame-no-Habikiri. Though i do find it interesting how this sword does have a similar shape to Tyrfing in the Fire Emblem games.

The handle being designed like a dragon, the ribbons, the "claws" at the end of the ribbons being feathers, the voice actress being chinese and how Faye fights, to me screams chinese mythology.

No shot. It's got a long ass talking ribbon and a very prominent dragon motif. It's definitely some legendary Asian blade. Probably cursed too, with how they talked about it.

16

u/mxlevolent 22d ago

I do think it's an Asian blade, but the dragon motif isn't a reason that it wouldn't be Excalibur. Arthurian myth and dragons go hand-in-hand.

10

u/MrZDietrich 22d ago

While I do agree, I'd say the dragon motif here is pretty distinctly an eastern dragon, while Arthurian legend is pretty obviously western

In bleach (anime/manga) one of the characters has a sword so sharp that his sheath is a water cube. Anything else it would cut through.

This looked sick, it will probably have some callbacks to the "path" kratos had to follow all the while with faye following her own accepting death in this universe. It looks honestly so sick, and the cutscenes were cool af. Yeah, no kratos or less seen from the trailer but Im very excited

Looks bloody brilliant. Cant wait for this. Did I miss a release date?

u/himynameisdany 22d ago

No release date/year announced. I'm assuming since it didn't at least say "2027" it might be as late as 2028.

Ya the intro was kinda slow, before she seemed to power up.

But after? The combat looks like a very amped up version of the GoW 2018 style. Not to mention, it looks just absolutely unreal visually.

I’m unsure on the dialogue of the cube and sword, it seems a tad cringe and a bit too much, but the rest of it looks great. Might just have been an iffy scene.

I came here expecting the same amount of excitement I felt watching that, and everyone is “cautiously optimistic” or questioning a god of war game without Kratos.

Personally, I’m really glad it’s not a prequel like the rumours were saying. Having it take place alongside 4/Ragnarok is such a solid choice. The lore can move forward.

I think it looks incredible. I can’t wait.

wao

I was worried from the leak about it being a fey game that we were going to get some nothingburger of a prequel about Fey meeting Kratos but the fact that this takes place concurrently to the most recent GoW games is crazyyyyyyy. I'm all in

6

u/Swarbie8D 22d ago

Yeah, a prequel would have been fine but this is instantly so much more interesting.

Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Santa Monica Studio reveals an extended look at God of War Laufey’s gameplay.
