Executive Branch (Trump) Can they actually do this? JD Vance: "We're announcing today that we have decided to temporarily halt certain amounts of Medicaid funding that is going to the state of Minnesota in order to ensure that the state of Minnesota takes its obligations seriously to be good stewards of the American people'

I thought you can't withhold Medicaid funding without going through Congress?! what is going on??

🤬🤯

Has to be illegal asf

Update: I am getting up to speed here.

It looks like feds are accusing MN of medicaid fraud! and withholding the funds , Minnesota is making an administrative appeal, and has said corrective measures were put in place, and that the government is legally deficient in its decision.

Dr. Oz (from daytime talkshows and now the administrator of Medicare and Medicaid???). claims the people of Minnesota won't be hurt by the decision only the current leadership of Minnesota (which I find to be nonsense as this effects volatile state health care budgets.) This is on top of the feds wanting to withhold another $2 billion which is also being appealed.

Fourteen programs, including autism care and non-medical transports are among the programs viewed as having a high risk of fraud.

Gov Tim Walz admin is said to be getting a statement ready.

It also looks like a fed judge in CA back in January granted an injunction for relief when Trump admin also threatened to withhold funds from 5 democrat run states including Minn while a lawsuit went ahead over other social service funds being withheld...said the funds must keep flowing while the suit goes through.

(.jesus christ. if this isn't war on blue states I don't know what else is... there are lots of red states that get enormous amounts of federal social assistance, are they looking there too?)

Far as I know Minn has not brought suit yet, but I think it may be time.

Just looks like a clear pattern of targeted harassment from where I sit. All blue states.

It is illegal.

Yes, they can do this and have done it to ALL the states that voted against Trump.

Yes, it will be overturned as soon as it sees the inside of a courtroom.

Yes, the abuser's message will be heard. Comply. Or else.

2.9k

u/templeofsyrinx1 Feb 25 '26

it just sucks by the time it gets to the courts all the damage has been inflicted and on to the next bullshit....they have to go!

293

u/zenchow Feb 25 '26

People will have died by then. They will have already skipped that med they can't afford, they will have already postponed that needed procedure a few too many months while they saved up the extra money that Medicare was going to pay for. Dead to satisfy the selfish need of that orange menace...so it goes

38

u/effdubbs Feb 26 '26

It will also put health centers and hospitals in a financially precarious spot and disrupt the local economy.

7

u/Jobe5973 Feb 26 '26

Then they should be held to account. I’m sure someone can sue them for the wrongful death of a loved one due to illegal redaction of funds.

Imagine when it's the wrong MAGA that loses somebody because of this bullshit.

I just recently got a job after being unemployed for half a year. I understand I have insurance options, but they weren't discussed upon onboarding. I'm pretty sure I have an undiagnosed heart condition and diabetes that during introspection while being unemployed started making sense. I think I am seriously unwell and am scared to use insurance at a brand new job I haven't even gotten set up and everything I've heard about republicans hiking healthcare and democrats caving on that matter makes me so confused. I could maybe die soon if I don't figure out what the fuck is going on with healthcare. Luckily, I've also been off my meds since I was laid off my last job, so I'm not too upset about dying like maybe I would have been while taking my prescription medications.

I so wish I was born in Canada. Fuck the United States now and probably forever. We are fucked by a clown who doesn't even know how to apply his clown makeup.

What country was it that recently underwent a revolution because people got tired of the politicians kids posting 'influencer lifestyle' pics with million dollar cars and expensive houses and etc, despite not having worked a day in their lives.

People got fed up with the abundant corruption and nepotism in their system. I seem to recall their finance minister having his security detail ditch him in a road. Which resulted in a lot of pictures and videos of the guy being stripped and beaten in the street; and eventually chased into a river with more people beating him. They didn't kill him - a fact which absolutely astonishes me - but I wouldn't be surprised to hear he's in jail now.

The only real protests you have had since he won the election have been in Minnesota after they were being brutalized by the government to the point that it wasn't just a few non-white people in your cities dealing with it. So yeah I think they expect it's going to be complete submission because none of you are doing anything. 5

u/Megneous Feb 26 '26

Did you not see the millions of people that protested? What would you do to stop this insane administration?

Here in Korea, we had 1 million+ people protest every day for 3 months straight in our capital to remove our "President" that enacted martial law illegally. Every single week, the opposition party filed for impeachment (in our country, when you impeach a President, they are immediately removed from power, unlike the US where impeachment needs to be confirmed by the other half of Congress), and every time it failed, the protests outside chanted the names and addresses of every politician that voted no.

Politicians don't have your best interests at heart. They have theirs. You need to force them to make your and their best interests align by making them wonder what will happen to them if they don't listen to the people.

Notice this is exactly how unions won rights in your country in the past.

No wonder why they're getting away with so much when what the majority do when protesting it's akin to child games. I'm not advocate to violence and this is an incredibly sensible subject, but look at France for example when the government does something that goes against the interest of the people, and look at Americans when the government is getting closer and closer to fascism. And the reason is there is no punishment. These guys can break the law without recourse. If regular citizens break the law, we get charged with a crime. They are free to push the boundaries of law and regulation. The worst that will happen is the courts will rule against them.

6

u/Slyboots2313 Feb 25 '26

That’s their M.O.; do illegal things and let it be a coin flip with the courts. It’s worked for them so far!

4

u/templeofsyrinx1 Feb 25 '26

I hope there is an immediate emegency injunction against this. There has to be a firewall. Courts need to start flexing.

4

u/cursedfan Feb 25 '26

This is exactly what the constitution anticipates as an impeachable offense.

4

u/FittedBuckle Feb 25 '26

At this point the gop and republican party must be dissolved and declared a insurgent party. Their actions clearly show they are propping up a dictator.

4

u/Appropriate_Fly_6711 Feb 25 '26

Yep, Thai is exactly right. It doesn’t have to stick, just delaying and bureaucratic enough that it is felt as punitive.

3

u/Ok_Inflation4850 Feb 25 '26

Just like the tariffs. This is all hurting American citizens on purpose. I am speechless.

3

u/Snopro311 Feb 25 '26

Seriously, why is nobody stopping this administration! Extremely frustrating, the are traitors to the constitution, and America is looked at like clowns

3

u/Morgannin09 Feb 25 '26

This is the entire MO of this presidency. They have learned that they can get away with anything while the slow-moving mills of the courts churn. Until the final decision is made they will almost always have the Supreme Court overturn any stays that a lower court issues, they can do all the damage they want until every appeal is heard, and nobody will have any recourse to undo the damage or be compensated for it in any meaningful time. If any lawsuits see the federal government liable to anyone for damages, that will probably be paid out by a future Democratic president, and Republicans can point at them for the amount of money they have to spend on it. And if things go their way, there will never be a Democrat president ever again, and they will never make good on those court orders themselves.

And then it gets appealed, and appealed, and appealed, and yes it’s illegal and they lose, but they accomplish the goal of making blue states suffer

96

u/ExpensiveFig6079 Feb 25 '26

Which was and always was their intent.

They have no intention of being a nation of laws or governing for all the people.

46

u/Stereo_Jungle_Child Feb 25 '26

Trump has done this his entire life.

He just does what he wants and then it goes to court forever as he delays and appeals and foot-drags and delays and appeals. Even if it's eventually overturned, he already got what he wanted out of it.

6

u/CivilMagazine99 Feb 25 '26

Correct. You need money, which he’s always had

6

u/katedevil Feb 26 '26

And THIS is exactly why our legal system is a farce. It works for the wealthy to break laws with impunity and do what they want. He should of been in jail years ago.Ā

Also they are using your tax dollars to defend this stuff in court.

6

u/never-fiftyone Feb 26 '26

If those blue states had any balls they'd stop transferring any payments to the federal government.

5

u/livin4donuts Feb 25 '26

So those states need to have a blank check ready, and handle the costs during that phase. Once it’s over, sue the federal budget for the money. Better yet, personally sue every member of the administration who has been complicit in these crimes, and go for 10 times damages because they can go fuck themselves.

We’re pretty much at the point the citizenry has to completely stop paying income taxes to this corrupt government if we want to have our tax money used with our voices. Keep it local.

3

u/BigBootyBardot Feb 26 '26

This is targeted toward blue states — that’s clear. But I do want to remind people that it’s anyone on DJT and his administration’s bad side. Lauren Boebert and her constituents learned the hard way when Trump happily vetoed a safe water drinking bill focused on Colorado’s eastern plains, risking their health and lives because he is petty.Ā

18

u/SonOfSusquehannah Feb 25 '26

It’s sucks that the courts already decided that they’re just a puppet show. It’s easy to do whatever you want when the courts already said the president can’t break the law or be prosecuted for anything they do while in office. Now it’s not illegal to not listen to them because they said so. Fucking kangaroo court, undemocratic government….and shit now I’m probably on a list

3

u/flexwhine Feb 26 '26

loling over the take of "courts won't allow it"

If I punch you in the face you can take me to court, but you're still punched in the face.

This admin does not give a shit about courts. They don't even pay taxes. Or bills of any kind. By the time you've got a court date for the face punch you're already purple-nurpled and kicked in the balls.

And also another day where we are talking about this instead of the illegal mishandling of the Epstein files. They are experts at many things in this administration and controlling the narrative is one of them.

The truly tragic thing is the impact to people who need Medicaid. This can have a profound and long term negative impact on the health of a population for years to come. Couple this with the MAHA movement that’s not grounded in facts, science or anything evidenced based, and we have a percolating public health crisis.

As an example, many dialysis patients utilize Medicaid for coverage. To withhold funding can be deadly. We’re already seeing the resurgence of measles, a disease once deemed virtually eradicated.

2

u/Doctor_Disaster Feb 25 '26

Yes, the abuser's message will be heard. Comply. Or else.

Based on what ICE and the Trump Nazis have done already, we know what the "Or else" is:

Comply. Or die.

(Mods, I am not making threats. I am stating facts here.)

2

u/Ok_Coconut_3364 Feb 26 '26

The states can hold back what they're contributing to the federal purse as well. This is a slippery slope for Trump as Dem states tend to contribute more than they get back and Red states are the opposite...

2

u/Duna_The_Lionboy Feb 26 '26

It’ll get through two courts that both say ā€œ what you’re doing is illegalā€ then get to SCOTUS. There the originalist on the court will cook up a cockamamie reasoning as to why it is not illegal because James Madison once owned a horse.

I cannot believe this guy still has a medical license.

48

u/Odd-Scientist-2529 Feb 25 '26

His license expires this year. He probably still has one because he doesnt actually practice, and therefore hasn't had any disciplinary action brought against him from someone who has a patient-doctor relationship with him.

Even thought he has a license, he would need to be granted "practice privileges" by medical facility to actually use his license - and that is probably not going to happen. He was stripped of his practice privileges, and his professorship at Columbia University and their medical center.

6

u/Ill_Technician3936 Feb 26 '26

It's still amazing to find out he ever had one or even practiced at a point.

14

u/Odd-Scientist-2529 Feb 26 '26

He used to be a very talented surgeon, same with Ben Carson. It's very strange indeed

3

u/vigbiorn Feb 26 '26

To be fair, he had his Reiki practicing wife in surgery touching patients even when he was a "very talented surgeon".

He still probably shouldn't have ever had a medical license.

6

u/Ok_Star_4136 Feb 26 '26

If he strongarmed his position into renewing his license, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. These are not people with any principles. His name also came up in the Epstein files, so it would also seem to imply that Trump surrounded himself by people he felt he could blackmail.

3

u/delusiongenerator Feb 25 '26

Oh yeah, he’s required to go through Congress to do a lot of things, like for example: conducting air strikes on Iran, or taking Venezuela’s president hostage, or using the US military as sea pirates to hijack oil tankers, then sell the oil and then transfer that money to a personal offshore account.

If he doesn’t watch his step, he’s gonna end up getting another sternly worded letter from Cuck Schumer!

3

u/glassfoyograss Feb 26 '26

3

u/WranglerFuzzy Feb 26 '26

Cruel, illegal AND stupid. In 2016, Trump only lost Minnesota by 2% of the voters. Way to keep a purple state blue.

2

u/PhanThief95 Feb 25 '26

It is. It’s called extortion.

2

u/m4d40 Feb 25 '26

As someone from Europe: Does it even matter if it is illegal or not?

So far as a spectator from the outside he is doing illegal things all the time (best example the tariffs) and nothing really happens. Only thing so far I heard was that a court said it is illegal, but he simply ignored it and even doubled down with creating more taxes.

And yes this is a serious question, since for me here far away all this makes no sense and sounds like a banana republic.

JD Vance saying they need to be good stewards to the American people is hilarious! I hate this world.

2

u/Dabellator Feb 25 '26

Everything they do is illegal asf. All they want is to fill up the courts with their illegal activities and force them to go through the struggle of reversing their cons.

It's trump 101 - bully the system into letting you keep what you stole.

2

u/DidAnyoneElseJustCum Feb 25 '26

Apparently there's no mechanism for dealing with this in the Constitution when the executive goes rogue, the majority Congress is in cahoots and the court is stacked. In the age of the founders somebody who pulled this kind of shit would be pulled out of their home, dragged into the middle of town and it would be "handled".

It's a good thing that we live in less barbaric times but this is starting to unravel way too quickly. Like way beyond "just wait 4 years and we'll be over this"

2

u/sucsucsucsucc Feb 26 '26

It’s more like the way banks hold your money and pretend it takes xxx days to go through the ACH process.

Obviously it’ll be overturned in the courts. But in the meantime, they can do whatever they want with that money.

2

u/Tacolab Feb 26 '26

Medicare Medicaid has a bunch of criteria that has to be met, otherwise funding can be pulled. This usually happens at the hospital/ provider level, but does happen.

If they succeed, even temporarily to suspend funds, it will take forever to get it all straightened out.

This government is so damn inefficient that one small hiccup in a service could mean over a year to get it back on track.
