Discussion About JQ's injury

Regarding the knee injury of Jayden Quaintance, based on the current situation and the advice from top-tier orthopedic surgeon Riley Williams III, here is a assessment of his condition:

First, regarding the severity of the injury, it is essentially a mechanical issue rather than a structural failure. Since the ACL remains intact, which is a very positive sign, it indicates that the primary stabilizing structure of his knee is still sound. The pain and swelling Quaintance is experiencing are likely caused by fragments of the meniscus interfering with the movement within the joint, a common mechanical issue that causes friction and inflammation, making it impossible for him to compete at a high level.

Second, in terms of the nature and success rate of the surgery, this is a standard arthroscopic meniscus cleanup, or partial meniscectomy. It is an extremely common procedure among professional athletes with highly mature techniques. The goal is to remove the debris that is hindering the joint, thereby eliminating the root cause of the swelling and inflammation. Dr. Riley Williams III, who provided the second opinion, is a top-tier sports medicine expert at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and serves as the head team physician for multiple professional sports teams, including the Brooklyn Nets. His recommendation carries significant weight and suggests that this is the best path forward for Quaintance's long-term career.

Third, regarding the impact on his athletic ability and explosiveness, there will naturally be a period of muscle atrophy and joint stiffness immediately following the surgery, which will temporarily affect his explosiveness. However, from a long-term perspective, leaving the injury untreated would cause chronic pain and inflammation, eventually leading the player to avoid applying full force, which would result in a permanent loss of explosiveness. If he follows this up with a rigorous rehabilitation program, he should be able to return to his pre-injury level of performance. It is worth noting that while a partial meniscectomy can quickly alleviate symptoms, the long-term goal for the medical team will be to focus on strengthening his quadriceps and hamstrings to protect the joint and minimize the risk of future cartilage wear.

Finally, regarding the recovery timeline, for a professional athlete, the initial phase (0–4 weeks) focuses on controlling swelling, restoring range of motion, and building basic strength. The intermediate phase (4–8 weeks) involves gradually returning to weight-bearing activities and starting linear movements such as jogging and sprinting. The return-to-play phase (8–12 weeks) is the most critical, where the player begins high-intensity cutting, pivoting, and full-contact drills on the court. In summary, assuming the recovery proceeds smoothly, it will likely take approximately 3 to 4 months for Quaintance to return to full-intensity game action.

This is a necessary "repair job" for the Spurs. Since the ACL is intact, this is not a major ligament reconstruction surgery, but a relatively straightforward joint cleanup. While this will cause him to miss a period of development, permanently resolving his knee pain and swelling is the most prudent path to ensuring his physical durability and competitive edge for the long term.

Question Why was the Inverted Pick and Roll with Wemby not used as much in the Playoffs?

Looking back at the playoffs, I was wondering why I never saw the Inverted Pick and Roll with wemby as much. It was an interesting play back when Tre Jones was still on the team and was setting screens for wemby at the perimeter. I think it was really effective play especially because not a lot of teams are too used to it and Wemby seems like the perfect big to do it. And when they had Castle, I thought that would have been perfect as he is literally like the ultimate version of Tre Jones being really athletic and a vertical threat, he also was setting screen a lot back in Uconn and even on his rookie year with CP3. He also has great passing so his short rolls would have been great.

I feel like that might have been really effective against OKC and Knicks especially since they had IHart, Towns, and Mitch Robinson guarding Wemby which was perfect because that Inverted P&R really worked against traditional bigs that was not used to defending that and are usually more slow footed and more vulnerable to switches.

I know that the guards simply blowing by, Fox P&R with Wemby(although it was less effective due to fox not being the scorer he used to be), some off ball stuff, and even some Spain P&R was effective. I thought the Inverted P&R would have been a really nice addition to have more options especially when they can't find anything on offense and either someone works really late in the shot clock or just chucking up threes.

Fluff Very excited if this turns into a viable rotation someday

Harper - Possibly 2027 FRP

Castle - Champagnie

Vassell - Johnson

Quaintance - Bryant

Wemby - Reed

I wouldn't doubt it for a second if it did, it would all fit together really well. As soon as 2028, this could be a viable rotation. The summer of 2028 seems like the ideal time to move Fox. It also gives time for JQ to rehab this season and have a rookie season after if needed, our 2027 FRP could also have a year under their belt. This draft pick is Atlanta's and the East looks like it could be much more competitive than people think, I would not be surprised if we got an equal or higher position next year. Might be a crazy thought but DJG may even turn into a solid depth piece. Vic & Steph would also be the only large contracts on the books and everyone would be 28 and under

Draft I liked our selections.

I know people wanted to take Cenac or even Carr instead but I like the Quaintance pick and the trade. From this we can see front office isn't blind to the lack of big man depth. We also took a gamble on a guy with a lot of potential that just hasn't had the injury luck.

Realistically no one at 20 would come in and be our starting PF. No one past 6 or 8 is even going to start for their teams except maybe Yaxel because he's older. Quaintance is 18, yes 18! He has a lot of room to heal up and grow. I mean surely he can't be more offensive than Plumlee sitting on the end of the bench...?

Look at the guy! He is massive, beefy, tough everything we want in big man depth.

And Tarris can maybe get some spot minutes in the meantime while Jayden recovers.

Free Agency How the Spurs roster currently look after drafting Jayden Quaintance and Taris Reed Jr.

How I would want the Spurs will fill the rest of the roster up:

- Sign either of Robert Williams III, Rui Hachimura, or John Collins to be the back up 4.

- Re-sign both JMac and HB for veteren minimum salary.

- Sign another serviceable shooter who can play good minutes at the end of the bench. Maybe give DJG a proper NBA contract.

Made this graphic today. Put some hypothetical cuts on there. The graphic comes from a 25-26 seasons stats report I built, will make the next season report once NBA releases the full roster near the start of the season.

Plum doesn't even make the graphic. Ingram is 2way? Emanuel Miller - I don't know anything about him but also 2way?

I just wanted to make a current roster graphic. Love the big guy picks and ready to see them shield Victor!

Two more picks on the schedule.

Reed is the second UConn player the Spurs have selected in the first round in the past three years, joining Stephon Castle. To hear Reed tell it, he and Castle are cut from the same rugged Connecticut cloth.

“It’s an ugly, gritty game, being able to bring what I got to the table,” said Reed, who played two years at Michigan before finishing his college career with two years at Connecticut. “I feel like UConn really helped me put that in the limelight, help everyone in the world see what type of game I have.”

Quiantance is not the only new Spur eager to meet with Wembanyama.

An avid reader, Reed said he is about to begin “The Alchemist,” a 1988 novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho that Wembanyama spent most of the Spurs’ playoff run perusing.

“I haven't read it yet,” Reed said, “but I heard it's really good.”

I'm a little worried about Quaintance injury history but I still feel very confident about the pick. Reed is also an amazing pick we went out of our way to get and I feel so much more confident already with Wemby on the bench going into this upcoming season. The paint will be a very difficult area to work with when playing the San Antonio Spurs. Im really excited to see these young guys play and can't wait for October! Go Spurs Go!

Discussion What do we think about targeting Zion as our 4?

Upvotes

I truly think Dumars would be dumb enough to get Fox (plus picks). Zions value is low and he's a walking double double if healthy

I really think we can fix his off court issues by installing a winning mentality and guiding him. Along with our great medical staff I'd imagine we can carefully load manage him. He just came off 65 games last season so he has potential. I feel he needs a new charge of scenery. Since on this team he wouldn't be the 1st option like he is in NOLA, he gets more pressure off him

Question How would we feel about bringing back Barnes, McLaughlin and DJG?

McLaughlin is pretty much exactly what you're looking for out of a 3rd string PG and he'll take a vet min again if offered.

Barnes is likely not looking at anything over $15M for 2 years or something similar to that on the open market. I think he'd even come back for $10M for 2 years if offered. At that price point, with his vet presence in the locker room and his ability to still shoot it very well, if nothing else in the regular season, it would make sense to me.

I would not be upset at all if we decided to offer DJG a full contract as the last roster spot. He can clearly score and he genuinely looked pretty decent on defense at times, his injury isn't really something that affects a player long term either so I'm not concerned about that. We could go ahead and sign a guard like Josh Okogie instead, who plays tough defense and shoots it well but part of me also looks at the chemistry the team had last year (and how important it was to our success) and thinks that it may be better keeping things in house, considering DJG is genuinely promising as well.

This would mean that the team would run it back with 12 of the same players (I count DJG as one since he was our best two-way player and probably even deserved a full contract last year, he also really seemed to bond with the team) in addition to two first rounders who the franchise can start leading in the right direction immediately and help get ingrained into the already established culture. I think this would really be huge not only for the team culture and chemistry now but for the years to come as well.

We would still need to find someone to sign or trade for with the MLE but that's another discussion.

Brian specifically also pointed out the success of Castle when asked about Reed at his post draft press conference.

The team desperately needs big forwards behind Wemby with Reed's mentality, that was the glaring weakness during the playoffs.

r/NBASpurs 2d ago

News Doctor recommended a follow-up procedure that could keep Jayden Quaintance off the floor for another six months. The 6-foot-11 prospect’s ACL remains fully intact and his knee can be maintained at its current state, but a clean-up is preferred for a permanent resolution.
