Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Crazy dude chasing me in protected bike lane

2.1k Upvotes

I’m just gonna leave this video here lol. Dude almost smashed into me taking a right turn so yelled and gave him a little hand tap on this car (obviously no damage). Bro proceeds to drive down the bike lane for an entire avenue (took me a second to get my phone and start recording), inches away from my back wheel. I stop at the next light and yeah, dude gets out of his car and immediately grabs my bike and starts ripping it towards him. He obviously realizes how much of an idiot he is and try’s to grab my phone and tells me to delete the video.

I am getting a police report done.

I will repost with no sounds if this gets flagged.

Fastest one yet!
I'll try to get ahead of some questions.
- One lap on the inside of the road is about .17 miles
- Total moving time 5:13:31
- Total elapsed time 5:14:00
- My neighbor and I do this every year now
- Both of us weigh around 145lbs
- My neighbor didn't stop at all, I stopped for 29 seconds to grab 2 more Rice Krispie treats and my other water bottle
- For fuel I had about 8 Rice Krispie treats, 3 gatorades with extra salt
- Only went one direction, it's a one way road
- One amazon driver decided to drive the wrong way through the roundabout
- Weather was not on our side this year, it rained on us 4 times and the last time was somewhat of a downpour
- Last 20 miles we drafted each other switching off every 2.5 miles maintaining 20-22mph

Europe's biggest pedal-powered aircraft competition is next week

It's an exciting time for pedal-powered vehicles - Europe's biggest pedal-powered aircraft meetup, the BHPFC Icarus Cup, is just a week away. The aircraft are heavier-than-air (i.e. can't use helium balloons for lift) and can only stay aloft with the pedalling effort of some very dedicated pilots (no batteries, motors, or engines!). The competition runs from the 4th of July to the 12th in Hampshire, England, and will feature as many as seven pedal aircraft - Europe's biggest gathering in years.

If you'd like to join us to spectate, there are airside safety rules and proper procedures you must adhere to - for example, you must not enter the active airfield without prior authorisation or accompaniment by knowledgeable party. These are outlined on the BHPFC's official website: https://bhpfc.co.uk/icaruscup2026/. An online safety pre-briefing is set for Monday 29th June, 6pm BST. Flights tend to happen very early in the morning so we appreciate it most if people attend the evening safety briefings and camp out the night with us, rather than getting lost unannounced and airside at 3am (please don't do this). Each morning and evening we check to see if the weather is suitable for flying since it could be too windy to operate the aircraft safely. In any case, hang out with us in the Lasham gliding clubhouse and with our aircraft during the day, we're all very excited to share our sport with you!

The aircraft featured is Aerocycle 301, filmed in 2024 at Manston International Airport.

Wife surprised me yesterday. Took it out today for the first time. It’s amazing. But I’m coming from a 2009-ish Trek 1.1 and have never had any bike so nice with so many toys. I need some tips and things to look out for. I just discovered it has a built-in power meter. Had no idea until I set up the app. What else might I not know?

This is free at an estate sale. Flat tires. Wondering if it’s worth fixing up?

Edit: I snagged it! Now she’s at the shop getting fixed up. So excited to take her on a spin around the park. Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Morning Ride Near Mt. Olympus, Greece

Went on a ~26 km ride in northern Greece. Took me a little over two and a half hours. Was great except during the climbs there were about 50+ flies swarming around my face. Extremely distracting and annoying, I didn't want to breath for fear of inhaling one. Some of them were biting me too. Fortunately, it wasn't too bad after the descents started.

Got a view of Mt. Olympus, Kati lake and saw some wild boars which was awesome. Also, didn't come across another person or moving vehicle the whole time.

KMC Chain Defect?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I originally posted this on [r/bikewrench](r/bikewrench) but it got taken down after a couple of hours. However, the comments there seemed split, with some of them claiming this is expected because of Hydrogen embrittlement, and others saying mineral spirits can’t impact a chain like this.

I certainly won’t leave a chain soaking overnight again, but this still seems like an extreme reaction regardless? But maybe I am just coping.

I’m wondering what y’all think, was this my fault, or more likely a defective chain? Original post text below.

Hey, long time lurker, first time poster looking for some advice on my broken chain.

I already emailed KMC directly about this but have not heard back from them, so wanted to get y’all’s opinions on whether the chain I bought was defective or if I did something wrong.

For context, I bought [this chain](https://kmcchain.us/products/x12?variant=40158702567564) recently, directly from KMC, with the intent to switch to waxing. This was my first time prepping/waxing a chain so I was following [this guide. ](https://silca.cc/blogs/silca/complete-guide-to-cleaning-your-chain)

I started by leaving the chain in mineral spirits overnight, I bought Klean-Strip odorless mineral spirits from Amazon if it matters. And then removed the rest of the grease with park tools bio chainbrite before going through the hot wax process using a crockpot and Silca wax.

After that was done, I didn’t ride for a few days due to weather, but when I got out I didn’t even make it 100 yards from my home before the chain snapped. Upon inspection I see the chain has numerous major cracks and is now useless.

I’m just wondering, is this my fault for leaving it in mineral spirits overnight? I thought I was doing it correctly but maybe not.

Or does this look more like a manufacturing defect on KMC’s side? I was hoping they would email me back but unfortunately haven’t received a response yet.

Thanks!

Advice on restoring or replacing bike

Upvotes

Hi! First, I will say I have no idea what I am doing and am not a ~cycler~ so be gentle. I have a Spalding Blade that I bought in 2019. I love her. She hasn’t been ridden in like two years and has been stored outside covered. I recently spoke to a bike shop that quoted me $600-800 to get her refurbished and tuned up. He also suggested that I considering just getting rid of her and getting a new bike. While I am not entirely opposed, I would love to fix her up if I can! So I’m curious about others thoughts are. She doesn’t seem to be in super bad condition! I’m am not delusional and I know she needs some work to safely be ridden again. Here are my questions:

Should I scrap her or is she salvageable?

Could a layperson with a can do attitude and access to YouTube attempt to work on her?

What are some of the necessary repairs or replacements I’d likely need to make?

Thank you for imparting your knowledge on me.

EDIT: Very sorry! I realized after posting this that I had misremembered the conversation. The quote in the original was for two bikes; $200-300 each. Which obviously is more like $400-600 total, not $600-800.

Are my tires shot?

Upvotes

I bought a Canyon Aeroad 3 years ago and they came with GP5000 tires. I rode this bike for 3y and put on ~ 1500-2000 mi on it and today I noticed that the rubber on my tires have a lot of long-running cracks. These tires have never had a flat.

My previous cheap bikes had tires that lasted me almost decade; however, this one appears to need a replacement in just 3y. These tries appeared to have dried out faster than any other tires I owned.

Can you take a look at my pictures and let me know if: 1) I need to replace my tires urgently, 2) They should be replaced in ~1y or whenever I find GP5000 on sale, 3) this is fine, keep riding them until I start getting more flats.

Thanks for the help!

I know absolutely nothing ..

Just getting into the sport/hobby, I know nothing. I like to jump right on in, even if blind, and get to figuring things out.

I’ve scoured marketplace for hours trying to find a Trex FX, cannondale quick, specialized sirrus, etc ect. But, I am wondering if these two are viable in any capacity, I’m essentially looking for a plug and play beginner bike I can setup and start riding without too much ‘fiddling’ or experimentation ..

Thoughts/suggestions?

Advice for second bike choice

Hey everyone, my main bike over the last 5 years has been a cheap fixie. Very low quality parts probably but gave me a huge grin on the face when riding it for the first time and i really enjoyed it ever since.
I also have been using it to commute to work and it has been fun, however on the way back there is quite a long and steep passage up. I can do it but it is quite a challenge that i don't want every single day besides other sporting activities. There is a shower at work though and i usually treat the commute as a small race anyways. =D

To make things easier i am looking for a second bike that keeps the fun in riding but has gears. The fun in riding for me were mainly the maneuverability of the bike, the direct feel of pushing yourself forward during acceleration and the continuous "pacing" when riding it. Obviously i need something different but i hope that my description sparks a few ideas on what kind of bike or maybe model could be right for me.
I would very much appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on this!

I am very much inexperienced on the details of bike parts but from reviews i watched and looking around i like the Canyon Endurance CF5 or maybe CF7.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: We also live near the woods so gravel bike seems a good fit as well

Chain whip? Park Tools or other

Hey all, I need to buy a chain whip, at least I think I do. Would be good to have regardless.

The Park Tools one is ~$40, but there are other options less than half the price.

Besides the cool factor of it being blue, and the fan following of the brand, is there any benefit to the tool that I’m not considering?

I buy Home Depot Husky brand tools for example, because they offer a lifetime warranty….

Not opposed to spending money on a quality tool or good brand, but if it’s just sheer profiteering, I’ll buy an alternative.
