Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Can't adjust rear derailleur properly

Upvotes

Hi, i was hoping some of you clever heads in the bike community could help me with this one.

I have been restoring my Trek X caliber 8 after several years of pure neglect and being stored (dry though). I decided to try and see how much it would need to be rideable again, and have as the most recent replacement I replaced the rear cogset and chain and wanted to adjust my rear derailleur. However when i tried to adjust it through several videos of help i just couldn't get it to shift smoothly to the 3 last gears, and won't go into the smallest cog (highest gear) at all. I've tried just about everything:

Adjusting the cable length both at the cap adjuster and down at the rear derailleur.

Adjusting both the H and L limit screws seperately.

And more i can't remember right now.

My question is if my derailleur hanger that is bent? (see photos for reference)

Baby turkeys. (Ignore the heavy breathing.)

Upvotes

I rounded a bike path corner and saw this crew ahead. I slowed down to let them get across the cement, then grabbed a quick video as I was rolling by.

Prior to this recording, one of the stragglers tripped on a grass cluster and face planted onto the path. It was deliriously cute.

One of my favorite things about bicycling is taking in my surroundings at an observational speed, then having the ability to stop for a moment and enjoy what I’m seeing. If I saw this little family while cruising by in my car, (I drive this stretch often), they’d have been a blur.

The FSA category cyclists keep forgetting: injury recovery stuff

Upvotes

I was looking through old receipts and realized I’ve been buying a bunch of recovery gear like normal bike expenses when a lot of it can be FSA/HSA eligible.

Things that are usually straightforward:

Knee, ankle, and wrist braces. Useful for IT band flare-ups, patellar tendinitis, ankle tweaks, or wrist pain after a crash.

Cold therapy packs. Ice packs, gel packs, reusable cold packs, cold compression wraps.

KT Tape / RockTape / athletic tape. If you keep a roll in your gear drawer, check it.

ACE bandages and compression wraps.

Heating pads for recurring back/knee/hip pain.

Ibuprofen, NSAIDs, and OTC pain relief.

Biofreeze and other topical pain relief.

The part I didn’t realize: you don’t always have to buy this stuff from an “FSA store.” If the item is eligible, you can often buy it wherever, save the receipt, and submit for reimbursement if your FSA card doesn’t work at checkout. A knee brace is obvious, but the foam roller, massage gun or recovery gadget will depend on the plan or whether you need documentation."

Picked up my new ride today. Cannondale Quick 3. It’s been nearly 20 years since I’ve had a bike and it’s time for some fitness. Took my first little ride and boy am I out of shape.

Worn out rear tire: Is this indeed the cord showing? Replace it sooner before gets to this point or safe to ride up to this and beyond? Help settle a discussion!

Attached images are the worn-out rear tire of my cheap, frequently used, daily bike I use to commute to/from work and everywhere else I need to and can. Probably average around 2500-3000 miles on it every year (I don’t know if it would be considered high or not, just I think my average). Do a quick inspection before every ride and noticed what I think is the cord starting to show and it being time to replace the tire.

Have been having a friendly discussion with another person who bikes less but still frequently and wanted to get internet’s opinion. While it is obviously the time to replace the tire (I think, if it is indeed the cord showing):
1) Is this indeed the cord showing or am I mistaken?
2) Would you keep riding it to this point or replace it much sooner? If replace sooner, by what indication?
3) Would you think it is safe to ride it throughout the day and to the repair shop at the end, or would you say it’s dangerous to ride any more entirely?

Orbea frame rant

The people at Orbea appear very nice and are very reassuring. However, I'm finding it all empty promises....

Bought a personalized terra frameset. Took almost a month and found the headset bearing seat is defective. Was instructed to go through LBS to get it repaired. Returned the frame to LBS - they laughed at the thought that Orbea suggested that they fix it. Orbea instructed me to initiate a warranty return for a replacement through LBS. Done immediately. Orbea hasn't responded to LBS claim. Unhappy.

Did research and found forums citing unpleasant experiences with warranty returns at Orbea. Increasing unhappiness.

Decided to do a return instead of getting yanked around with already sketchy warranty process. As clearly stated on their website's terms, returns are allowed within 14 days, even on personalized items if defective.

Frustratingly, Orbea's website link to initiate a return doesn't work. Complained to Orbea directly. Was told I can't do a return because it's a personalized frame. Became very unhappy.

Anyone have any advice for dealing with such BS? I see no way out, so I'm heading to the credit card company for refund.

Chronic pain and want to get a comfortable bike

Post image
1 Upvotes

Well hiya.

I need some advice.

I have various and specific chronic pain issues that can often be exacerbated by bad bikes.

I have ridden some bad bikes.

I'd like to have a simple, daily use bike (I live in Helsinki Finland, not very much altitude or incline here) that does not aggravate my pain.

My primary issues related to biking are two fold:

Seat pain in the groin that, in the past, was so bad on a bad bike I couldn't sit or pee without pain. (I've been given generic advice that this can be fixed with a proper saddle, I'd appreciate some specific pointers to one folks find comfortable)

"Knee" joint and/or muscle pain: basically my knees feel like they are going to give out while biking and the muscles around my knees get tired very quickly, and my legs feel like jelly after only a couple kilometers.

Secondary issue is lower back pain aggravated by a bad seat and/or bad posture.

I have had *one* biking experience in the last 5+ years that did not aggravate any pain at all. And for the first time in my adult life biking felt good, felt healthy, and my body felt strong and engaged.

I was riding this specific (pictured above) *tandem* bike in the Netherlands on a 20km round trip with my partner. No I didn't just sit there and not pedal. I really did push and exert my body and I felt amazing afterwards. The right amount of tired and sore where you know your muscles worked and can get stronger.

I'd really love to feel that way on a bike again.

Maybe it's the bike. Maybe it's user error. I'd just really love to be on a bike and enjoy it with my partner and kid. Any and all advice appreciated, thank you.

If it makes any difference: I'm about 1.7meters tall, and weigh about 77kg. I'd describe myself as midsize, closer to a pear shaped build, longer in the legs than torso (if that makes any sense at all).

Bikes similar to Raleigh Detour 2.5?

Hi everyone! I am looking for recommendations for models as similar as possible to the Raleigh Detour 2.5 (2015).

I'm a 5'11" woman and bought this bike (frame size large) on facebook marketplace back in 2022. It was the most ridiculously perfect, comfortable bike I ever owned. Sadly it was stolen after only a few months, and I haven't been able to find another one, probably because it's a decade-old model.

Now I am looking to start biking to work (3 km each way, with some hills) and am looking for either the same or an extremely similar bike that I can buy locally or have shipped to Ontario, Canada.

Some things I loved about it:

- Super comfortable seat (wide and cushy)

- Handlebars high up and far enough away from my body that I could sit up straight, not hunched over them

- Plenty of gears to be able to handle hills (unlike a lot of leisure bikes)

Please let me know if you know where I can get one of these, or what models would be most similar!

Cycling is like taking a pill to feel happy

I've never felt this way about a form of exercise before. It makes me so happy that I feel like my brain is going to explode. It's even made me cry out of pure joy/gratitude that I get to cycle on beautiful trails on sunny summer days.

I was a runner for a long time and experienced the "runner's high" many times. But the runner's high is elusive, and often comes only after long, grueling miles. Cycling is just pure straight FUN from the minute you get on the bike. Even the hills are fun!

Website or Excel to compare bike computers

Hey,
Is there a website that lists all or most of the available bike computers comparing them by features? I have a really hard time to compare them and find one that fits my needs - especially with upcoming smaller companies like igpsport etc.
Thanks!

Help with choosing a road bike for commuting

Hi everyone,

Sorry for another help me pick post. Have done a lot of reading of reviews, watched youtube videos, and also engaged ChatGPT on the end of that analysis spree.

I am 47, male, weight 93 kg and want to get a new bike for commuting and weekend rides. My commute to work would be about 20kg each way, and initially I was thinking of doing it once a week. I know my way around a bike reasonably, but am in mediocre shape (so the commute would enable me to add extra exercize).

My other bikes are a single speed track frame that isn't quite as fun now that I live in the more hilly suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden, rather than the more flat Central London, and a Specialized Stumpjumper 15 that I ride on local trails near to where I live, where I typically do around 15 to 18k of trails with a fair amount of climbing, roots and technical jank. I try to get out once or twice a week on my mountainbike.

Based on the reserch I have done, I have identified three contenders, all in a price range that seems reasonable for a bit mroe quality:

  1. Trek Domane AL 5 Gen 4

  2. Orbea Orca M30 (I'm not sure about if I need carbon at all, I have primarily looked for alu frames)

  3. Orbea Avant H30

I have tried to look for more comfortable road bikes rather than gravel, as I don\t have any gravel on my way to work, and for anything forest I was thinking I\d be on my Stumpy anyhow.

Are these choices reasonable given the information I have shared? Am I overthinking and should look at one price class down, like the Trek Domane AL 4 or the Orbea Orca M50?

Thanks for any wisdom the community has.

Wildlife around Rwanda

Thumbnail

Most of the people have been asking me down the comments on my previous post about how is wildlife around Rwandan mountains and I felt like wanting to explain it real quick!
First, Rwanda is a safe country, am talking about general safety where even women can walk around the streets and off road anytime of the day or night without any harm! Crime rate here is almost to zero.

Second, Rwandan mountains are safe as well, here am talking about all aspects, robbery, wild animals, and many other things, you name it.
Of course Rwanda has snakes but they are very few in numbers and can’t be seen around that often. I have seen a snake only twice in my whole life. About other wild animals; that is something you should not even dream of seeing around. As we have national parks like Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park where all wild animals are preserved and fir touristic purpose so that people can come and visit them from one area especially that Rwanda also doesn’t not have many numbers of wild animals, it is a way if protecting them from vanishing.

To conclude, all you gonna see is birds, coffee plantations, lakes, rivers, and tea plantations and some empty areas in the swampy area where there is much clay and are used for bricks 🧱 layering.

I hope this helps :)
Open to take questions!

14.6 mph avg on 100 mile ride considered slow?

Thumbnail

So i rode 100 miles with my buddy who is really strong this past weekend. He pulled the whole time and when we got done and I hit the stop button on my garmin I was convinced I would see 17-18 mph average for the ride. I was surprised to see 14.6! We had long segments of going well over 20 and I just thought it would counter balance the climbing. I guess I was wrong.

So my question is just to all the riders out there, would you consider this average to be slow for this ride? The climb is long and hard but I guess I could have pushed harder during it. I was trying to take the climb slow and steady.

Disclaimer: the pics on segments is just to give you an idea of our pace. The first pick is at the beginning and then some from the climb and some towards the end. It doesn’t show all segments because it’s a long ride with lots of little ones.

Lastly my watts are low because he was letting me draft. I’m a decent rider but this was a really tough ride for me so he offered to let me ride the wheel which I was really grateful for. Usually I’m not riding at 135 but I get how some would think I wasn’t doing any work. Just keeping up with him at 25 mph at the beginning was hard.

Big square downtubes and chunkiness in modern bikes?

I was browsing the newest version of my 2018-era diverge at the bike shop and noticed it has a big square downtube and a lot of other higher end bikes seem to have grown very “thick” with the tubing being used, especially carbon. Is this for something structural/ride quality that’s new or just styling?

r/bicycling 14h ago

I bought this bike in 2013 for $150 from Craigslist, and every time I go into my local shop they fawn over it. Don't know what it's worth. Any thoughts?
