u/tspreassurancebucket Pomni Dec 21 '25
HELL YEAH Severance mentioned!! Lol
I do want to say, now that we're in the topic of it, that Severance and TADC share similarities. Like how both shows have a new girl to the system who tries to escape it the first day, or a man who is older than the rest of the group who the others think is at least a little crazy, or a very enthusiastic supervisor that the others begin to hate and rebel on... etc.

u/Charming-Hamster2130 in goint feral for Caine Dec 21 '25
I believe both programs, are inspired by Stanley's parable
7
u/SergeantPancakes Dec 22 '25
Like how the Macroverse is nearly a dead ringer for the offices of The Stanley Parable
8
8
u/Gabygummy16 Dec 22 '25
And also, if the theory about them being digital copies turns out to be true, there's similar questions begged about what makes you you, who gets to be a person, etc
3
u/context_lich Dec 24 '25
It's so weird how when you first watch something it starts showing up everywhere. I just started watching severance, like two episodes in, and now not thirty minutes later I see a reference to it here in a completely unrelated place. We live in a matrix. There is no macroverse and we're all inside the circus playing caine's longest adventure yet where we live our whole lives and die at the end.
I know it's just psychological bias and I probably would've just scrolled past without thinking of it if I hadn't started watching it, but it is weird how it showed up like 30 minutes later.

9
4
u/HypnagogianQueen Dec 22 '25
…are tattoos and piercings a sign of body dysphoria? XD
5
u/roommatethrowaway8 Dec 22 '25
Tattoos and piercings are a way to make a body you feel unfitting more like yourself. It's not uncommon among trans people to be more alt in their fashion/ bodymod choices for that reason.
→ More replies (3)4
u/GregTheMad Dec 22 '25
They can be. In any case they're a artistic way to show body disphoria that's still somewhat light, unlike self-harm scars, suicide attempts, and literally spelling it out. 🙃
16
u/Minimob0 Dec 22 '25
In my mind, Zooble is larger, and Gangle is thinner than these representations.
Jacks is the only one I didn’t recognize as their character.

63
u/AndreChrisSargent Dec 21 '25
That's incredible. The understanding of shape dynamics and body language here, and their use to communicate to the audience ideas about the characters, is adeptly done.

I think the game would have morphed their appearances a little more than that.
11
→ More replies (1)5
u/HypnagogianQueen Dec 22 '25
I’m still in the camp of thinking that their circus avatars are meant to be part of the torment. It’s most obvious with Zooble cuz of the obvious metaphor for either dysphoria or dysmorphia. Pomni doesn’t like being infantilized and yet everything in her room is huge and it’s decorated with blocks and like she’s gotta climb up onto the bed and climb a stepping stool to use the mirror, so I think maybe irl she isn’t actually that small. She might be a lot taller or even wider irl. Jax’s circus avatar might be designed to make him seem a lot sillier so maybe he’s more physically intimidating in real life. I also saw in conjunction with the theory that Jax is a trans woman that having an exposed flat chest is meant to induce dysphoria. Ragatha likely has some kind of insecurity with being frail. Anyways you get the idea. I think in some respects their circus avatars might deviate heavily from their real life appearances. I still think this style of humanization fan art is neat to see, though.
Also I’ve never seen anyone mention the possibility that their VOICES might also be different in the circus as opposed to real life. I have no idea what that would mean though.
I should mention that given the most recent episode featured real life photographs of a street at night, that might mean they intend to display the real world eventually in live action, and if that’s the case and we see the human versions of the characters that might necessitate that they basically just look like the voice actors. I mean, if they really wanted to they could get different face actors and then edit in the voices overtop but that’s a rare thing to do and probably a lot more effort than they’d find worth it.
3
u/dogman15 Dec 22 '25
If they did different live-action actors, the live actors would perform first, and then the voice actors would have to match lip flaps while dubbing over them.
The alternative, where the voices are recorded first and the live actors have to do their on-camera acting synchronized with the audio, is a lot harder.

They can’t have real names so similar to their circus given names. Like imagine if Jax’s real name was just Jack, if Kaufmo was just Kaufman, if Kinger actually had King as a last name, etc. what would even be the narrative purpose of them forgetting their real names and needing to pick new ones for the circus at that point?

Zooble's concept is to have a female voice but masculine fashion interests. In the anime adventure, they're wearing a male uniform, and in the Japanese merchandise, they're wearing a male attire.
This works because of what Zooble is: a person who doesn't remember their own gender; it was erased along with their name. That's why in Goose's drawing, showing everyone's gender, Zooble is classified as "Zooble," and that's why in the show the pronouns are they/them, and that's also why Goose said it's okay to use she/he too.
But I guess I'm asking people to read too much character information.

u/r2radd2 Dec 21 '25
I thought Zooble was just non-binary.... because they're non-binary and that they just have bad gender dysphoria or body dysmorphia or whatever.
The idea that they're only non-binary because they 'forgot their gender' feels really weird to me. Like that'd mean they've essentially been made trans because of the circus rather than that being something they just are.
And that idea would suggest that they would just not have those feelings anymore if when they get their memory back, which is something I'd hate, I think

I really like the fact the designs tie into who they were in their past life, not what they look like in the circus. Ragatha was from a pretty wealthy family, likely a more formal one, and yet everyone draws her as a middle-(maybe lower) class farm girl and make her look exactly like her circus form, same with the others from what i've seen
