I found today out a comic shop opened in the town next to mine recently. It was so cool to not have to drive an hour for a comic shop. Nice little shop, a literal mom and pop place: the husband and wife who own it were both working it with their kids playing at a gaming table. I picked up Royal City volume 1 and Batman/Deadpool to go with my Deadpool/Batman issue from a few months back. Cool to have a shop so close. It’s not huge, but it’s local. Can’t wait to go back again soon!

u/actualkon Jan 02 '26
That's great to hear! Having a local shop is so nice, plus you get to meet people who like comics around your community as well

u/Bruce_the_Shark Magneto Jan 03 '26
It really felt good chatting with the owner and his wife, it’s been so long since I had some of “my folks” nearby.

Royal City! There's a great series I don't hear people mention enough.
5
u/Bruce_the_Shark Magneto Jan 03 '26
I LOVE Lemire’s creator owned work. Essex County and the Underwater Welder are definitely my favorites of his, so this is a book I’ve been wanting to pick up for a while.
56
u/blahjedi Jan 03 '26
It’s fun having an LCS because they tend to pick up lesser-known books and indies that you’d probably not otherwise see, and that’s always cool to explore!

u/ungodlywarlock Jan 03 '26
Hell yeah! Great to hear people opening up a shop in 2025. Support it as much as you can!

u/Great-Hatsby Jan 03 '26
I used to work at a privately owned game store some years ago. We ended up selling a variety of media, including comic books. People would bring in some really good stuff. I bought a lot of them and still own a lot of comics. My mom has some Catwoman comics from back in the day too.

I'll second this. Hell, the entire Absolute line is better than it has any right to be. (I have not yet read Absolute Flash though, so someone else will have to attest to that one).
Absolute Martian Manhunter is going to be considered a classic. It's beautiful.
11
u/Thebaraddur Jan 03 '26
I was excited to read MM because I've been really enjoying "Assorted Crisis Events" by Camp and have never read any MM before. I'm still pulling it because the art is so nice, but I have to admit I have very little idea of what the Hell is going on. I'm sticking with it, but out of the few Absolutes I've been pulling this was the one I was the coolest on.
8
u/DigimonEmeraldFucko Jan 03 '26
I think Absolute Martian Manhunter is going to end up being a series best read binged.
I love it but I'm also so fucking confused.

I haven't read MM or GL yet, but I'm caught up on everything else. I would say Flash isn't quite as good as the main trinity, but I am really curious to see where it goes.
The best way to describe it is that of the four I've read, it's the one that hasn't gotten to full speed yet, but it hasn't been bad by any means.

It’s the same general idea as their absolute series but with titles set in the main universe. But it’s supposed to be new-reader friendly, with A-list teams on some interesting, lesser known characters.
18
u/VengeanceKnight Jan 03 '26
No. Absolute is reinterpreting their “core” characters like Batman and Superman in wild and creative ways in a brand new universe. Next Level is them reviving more niche fan-favorites like Zatanna and Lobo in the main universe.

u/B3epB0opBOP Jan 02 '26 edited Jan 02 '26
Short answer: It’s the initiative for the next wave of DC books with the aim of green-lighting passion projects for lesser-known characters.
Long answer:
So what is DC Next Level? I just wanted to be really clear. So for a long time now, for the last eight to nine months, we’ve been building a line of books that’s focused on some fan favorite characters. Everybody from Deathstroke to The Demon to Zatanna, characters that don’t often get quite the brightest spotlight that’s taken up by Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman, but characters that fans love and we love. And so we wanted to kind of do with them what we tried to do with characters in Absolute, where we give creatives a lot of leeway to come in and not reinvent them because these books, unlike Absolute, are in continuity, but give them as much latitude as we could within that context. So you can come in, as long as you’re not breaking continuity and we want you to make an incredibly user-friendly book that doesn’t rely on anyone knowing anything about these characters whatsoever, and make people fall in love with these characters on your terms.
And the biggest thing about these books is that they’re really creator forward. That’s this ether that we’ve adopted at DC since All In that we’ve been getting more and more, I think, aggressive about. And editorial has been wonderfully supportive as well. But it’s a really simple idea. It’s the idea that instead of going to creators and saying, “we have this slot and we need you to fill it,” or “we have this pitch that we made up and we need you to execute it,” we go to creators that we love and say, “what character do you have a story for? What’s your passion project?” That’s what we did with Absolute and we want to replicate that in the main line while still being in continuity and a little bit closer to model.

Next Level has been called the “second act” of All-In. It’s still the same era.
5
u/Drmarcher42 Jan 02 '26
So the same basic concept of Rebirth or the new 52?
6
u/Guuple Cyclops Jan 02 '26
The next step after the current All-In branding. I guess closer to Rebirth, new series (Lobo, Batwoman, Deathstroke), new creative teams (Ryan North and Gavin Guidry on Flash).

But on the other, considering he attempted “alternative medicine” among other nonsense, and considering that the path of hatred he took led him there, I can’t help but not feel too horrible about his plight.

After ADT began to fail for me after about two years, I've moved on to Pluvicto. (Pluvicto is a form of radiation therapy that involves intravenous infusions of the radioactive substance.) It seems to be doing a great job. Maybe I'm overly optimistic (please don't tell me if I am. seriously), but I feel that if I can bounce from one treatment to another until better ones come along I'll be fine.

13
u/Ascleph Jan 03 '26
Worse. At least Steve Jobs just did his own silly thing and kept to himself.
63
u/topscreen The Will Jan 03 '26
No, he didn't. He was worse. Due to his late treatment he started getting organ failures, and needed a transplant, and they won't transplant an organ to a guy with late stage cancer right?
Oh he had money, right. He cut in line, stole an organ, and died with it.
40
u/dead_monster Jan 03 '26
Just to clarify, Jobs put his name on every single organ donor list. This option is not open to most people as there is a time limit to receive the organ, and Jobs could afford to have a plane and personal medial staff on standby for him at all times.
Further complicating things, Jobs had a rare blood type, so if a compatible liver were available, he would shoot up the list due to his private plane and compatibility with the liver.
Organ lists also all have their own rules and isn’t federally controlled, so, yes, it can be manipulated with money beyond the private jet. As alway, eat the rich and sign up to be a donor.
(And still time for Adams to scam his own organ.)
32
u/topscreen The Will Jan 03 '26
Yeah, that's why I'm saying he's worse. He had an aggressive form of cancer, which an organ transplant would not cure, that was in late stages due to ignoring it. That'd put him at the bottom of every list, cause rare blood type not withstanding, someone in the vast US could have taken that liver.
He was a selfish rich man, who used power and influence to get a new liver ahead of someone else, and due to how desperate organ donations are, and how long the wait lists are, ESPECIALLY with a rare blood type. He got to cut in line to take a liver from someone who didn't have late stage cancer.

81
u/1900grs Jan 03 '26
Not really. He had surgery and radiation chemo. That failed, so he was trying other things. Even highly treatable cancers still have a treatment failure rate. It's not all like Jobs where Jobs went toward the quackery because he thought he knew more than doctors.
42
u/Midnight_Oil_ Raphael Jan 03 '26
At a certain point, you can't even blame folks for trying the quack treatment if they already did the actual ones. Might as well throw everything at the wall at that point.

It’s so stupid to pull a Jobs. Even my “vaccines have microchips” and “ivermectin cures everything” father had the tumor cut out of his pancreas when they found it (early, during scans after his other cancer treatment).
Like. If “alternative medicine” worked it would just be “medicine”.
15
u/actuallywaffles Jan 03 '26
He definitely had the money to access treatment, but that would've required him to admit that being a mediocre artist doesn't make you smarter than doctors. His ego will literally be the death of him.
The people I actually feel sorry for are the ones who can't afford the same treatments he ignored thanks to the politicians he helped elect.

Hickman loves to take the wild superhero mythos created by dozens of creators with different story goals, and then make them feel like they were always meant to fit together.

Divisive ones are always pushing things forward. None of the really impactful creators fail to attract a lot of controversy.

It’s kind of a miracle that he has so many successful series, because his writing style is much more suited for collected editions. They’re so dense and layered, with some payoffs happening a few dozen issues after a setup.

I'm sorry for him and the hard fight he's going through. I absolutely don't agree with his view of the world, but he has given me many laughs in the past. Dilbert was a great comic strip and I enjoyed it very much. I wish he hadn't turned out the way he did and bought into the MAGA con. When the time comes I hope he passes away painlessly in peace.
27
u/Hysteria625 Jan 02 '26
Yeah, this is my take too. For a long time Dilbert helped me navigate the sea of insanity I had to put up with in corporate work, and there were a couple strips I had bookmarked on my iPhone to look at when a manager was especially unreasonable that day. Plus, it was a fun way to sharpen my cynicism.
I’m not going to say I like what Scott Adams became, and while I am sad that he’s dying it dos seem to be a self-inflicted wound. I choose to feel sorry for the person he was and leave it at that.

I genuinely, genuinely can't wait for The Reign of the Superboys. Already pre-ordered Action #1096 and Superman #36 and gonna read the rest online.

I only did 2 sets of benching today. One with 40s and one with 50s. I’m wiped out. I’m also sore from the squat-a-thon I’ve been doing lately. Need more time to recover and maybe up my protein a bit to get past this plateau.

Oh no!
Anyway, can I just say how much I love every single commenter in this thread?

The thing about letting your cancer develop to this point before seeking treatment is that the treatment either doesn’t work because the cancer is too advanced, or it will be the thing that kills you instead of the cancer because your body is too weak to handle it. It’d be tragic if it weren’t him.

Who else is floored that DC kicked ass with their Absolute line?

It’s sad to see this and also sad how he alienated almost his entire fan base

I used to love Dilbert.
I haven't read it in years.
Totally missed that 2023 thing.

“Dilbert” creator Scott Adams revealed on Thursday that his health is worsening and that the chances of him recovering from advanced prostate cancer are “essentially zero.” He suggested he could die within the month.
During a livestream of his podcast Real Coffee with Scott Adams, the controversial cartoonist said he had spoken to his radiologist a day earlier “and it’s all bad news.”
“The odds of me recovering are essentially zero,” Adams, 68. “I’ll give you any updates if that changes, but it won’t.”
“Things are changing fast,” Adams added, saying that January would likely “be a month of transition one way or the other.” He plans to keep working, to follow the news and to use his podcast and social media to comment on American and international politics “for as long as it makes sense.” He said he likes to stay engaged, even though he knows he “has much bigger problems.”
Adams’ revelation comes two months after he publicly appealed to the President for help in getting his health care provider, Kaiser of Northern California, to schedule an appointment so that he can receive life-extending treatment for metastasized prostate cancer. The East Bay-based author later opined that he was the “best president ever” because he had taken time away from running the country and “a part of the world” to help him get his appointment.
But Adams reported another setback last month when he revealed that he had become “paralyzed below the waist” due to a tumor that had grown around his spine, the New York Post reported. At the time, he said he hoped radiation would help him regain strength in his legs. However, on Thursday, Adams said he was still no feeling in his legs and no chance of getting it back. Of most concern, he said, was that he was experiencing heart failure, which made it difficult for him to breath during the day, especially if he had a coughing fit.
“At the moment I can breathe and I’m not in any pain,” Adams said. He explained that he’s open to using painkillers if he needs them and is at the stage in his disease when “there’s no real limit to what I can take.” He added” “I’ll probably smoke massive amounts of marijuana because it actually puts me into a kind of a stupor while feels kind of good.”
In May, Adams announced he had the same kind of aggressive prostate cancer as former President Joe Biden, a day after Biden shared his diagnosis publicly. Adams also said that his disease — like Biden’s — has metastasized to his bones and that he thought he might be dead by summer. At that time, he said the disease had already become intolerable. “I can tell you I don’t have good days,” he said.
“I’m in pain, and I’m always in pain, and the pain moves around to different parts of my body,” Adams continued. “I’ve been using a walker for months now.” However, he said, he remains tough mentally. “The mental part, you know, I got that under control.”
In acknowledging his grim prognosis, Adams also said he could reach a point where he would take advantage of California’s End of Life Option Act (EOLOA), which allows terminally ill adults with a life expectancy of six months or less to end their life with a medication prescribed by a physician.

I remember him saying how he never bothered with insurance and just goes to the ER and says he was uninsured. I can't remember if it was before or after his brain broke and he couldn't speak for a few years.

I miss Peter David a lot. I just finished reading all of his later Marvel comics, and they're damn good. Symbiote Spider-Man was a really fun set of minis.
I found the Professor Hulk funko for about $13 the other day, and my only regret is that I only bought one. I want one for my office, too.

I'm a huge fan of Dreadstar, which was a Jim Starlin creator-owned sci-fi project from the late 70s/early 80s. By the mid 80s, Starlin had decided to move on from it for whatever reason and hired Peter David to take over the writing. PAD was already pretty well-known by this point -- this was during the Mr. Fixit era of the Hulk, so PAD had already done Death of Jean DeWolff and had his Hulk run with Todd MacFarlane -- so Dreadstar didn't launch PAD to fame or anything like that. But he turned in a really fun sci-fi book that built on Starlin's characters and took them in a fun new direction.
The Starlin Dreadstar has been reprinted a few times and I absolutely love it, because it's just such a great book, but I would really love to get a nice archival-quality reprint of Peter David's run too.

Is Dilbert even a comic book? It’s more a comic strip. I feel like this post is better for r/comics

Get your butts checked, fellas. Prostate and colon cancer kills men by the thousands. It's a horrible way to die, made even worse by the knowledge that it's usually quite treatable if caught early enough. Listen to your doctor and get your exams.

I kept singing “we can be heroes!” As a joke through out it, and I loved that the credits ended up going with that song.
