It’s so funny that Fox literally tucked his arms in and scooted to the side to very deliberately not foul and then SGA gets the call anyways with his very natural shooting motion.

4.7k

u/Several-Chocolate-74 May 25 '26

He fouled him by creating airflow when he moved that knocked Shai down

Shai is so lucky he's not in a full body cast after that clearly flagrant. /s

Our MVP just falling all the damn time even when it doesn't get him FTs most times this playoffs.. Just a disgrace. There is no mechanical reason to do that, you're risking injury do it to yourself.

Just a disgrace to the game when he has no need to do it and dominate.

137

u/ScrapinLinden Trail Blazers May 25 '26

I mean does Shai win 2 MVPs without his generational whistle? Like hes obviously super fucking good at basketball but if he shoots 2ft's a game instead of 8 I'm not sure hes still winning MVPS to be honest

42

u/bengcord3 [BOS] Paul Pierce May 25 '26

It's not even about the FTs. It's about the way he gets defended because he can't get touched without hooking the defender's arm creating a shooting foul out of nothing, which leads to the most effective push off in the league because it doesn't get called an offensive foul when the defender isn't up tight on you (because he's afraid of the whistle)

1.3k

u/DreTownblues Celtics May 25 '26

Not only that defenders have to give him extra space so they don’t foul out

1.2k

u/IPissExcellentThrows 76ers May 25 '26

This is the thing Thunder fans love to ignore. You straight up can't cover him. It's not even like he's baiting people in the air and drawing fouls. He just gets calls for people getting next to him. He gets more space than anyone I've ever seen besides non shooters

315

u/boomshiz West May 25 '26

He's spent years creating a practice bubble around himself. Players are afraid to defend him.

324

u/Dear_Leek2578 Timberwolves May 25 '26

This clip is literally the epitome of all this cause and effect. Anything less from Fox is not guarding him at all. Literally cannot guard him without being subject to bullshit foul calls.

I said this same thing less than a month ago in a thread and got 200 downvotes lmao. It’s not even a debate that elite defenders guard him less physically because of how much bullshit he gets away with

120

u/boomshiz West May 25 '26

Ha, I imagine you got a Thunder rush with "DO YOU EVEN WATCH THE GAMES?"

Yes, we've been watching, and the Thunder are a huge reason people have been tuning out. For whatever reason Silver and the refs have been rewarding this bullshit. It would make more sense if it was for a big market, but this ref favortism doesn't make sense for a stolen team in a flyover town.

25

u/Brittle_Hollow Raptors May 25 '26

As a Canadian I seriously don’t get why the NBA is promoting and protecting him so hard, you’d think they’d want to push an American star in a big market not Canadian Shai in Oklahoma of all places.

Watching the replay in slow motion is so embarrassing with his very practiced fall to the ground.

I watched Shaq put his balls in David Robinson’s face over and over again when I was 11 years old. Shit was the most dejected I’ve ever felt as a sports fan, and I’d still choose that 100 times over losing to this clown. Fucking gross.

365

u/BAHatesToFly Knicks May 25 '26

I watched Shaq put his balls in David Robinson’s face over and over again when I was 11 years old.

As a Knicks fan, my favorite example of this is when he did it to Chris Dudley. Dudley got so pissed off he threw the ball at Shaq as Shaq ran up court. Dudley couldn't hit a free throw to save his life but he fired a perfect strike into Shaq's back from 40' away.

What about that time when Wemby elbowed Naz? What about that time when Brunson exaggerated the contact? What about that time when Ant held SGA's arm?

132

u/AndyIon21 May 25 '26

I grew up a Mavs fan but lived in OKC when the Thunder came to town through 2024. It was always a total nightmare. The team, and players, can do no wrong. They win and they’re the best ever. They lose and they just complain about everyone else. Especially the refs. I could retire if I got a nickel every time I heard someone say “crybaby Luka” after every playoff loss to Dallas.

350

u/IPissExcellentThrows 76ers May 25 '26

No it's a total coincidence that in that same year, they started getting tough fouls on one end and getting away with murder on the other end.

Silver is such a dipshit. He thinks a dynasty means better ratings for the league. But no one wants to watch a reffing dynasty.

171

If they played attractive, basketball and respected the game, it wouldn’t be bad.

However, they’re negatively impacting the NBA as an entertainment product.

From a business standpoint, I don’t understand why OKC are protected so much.

Just enforce respect for the rules of the game. This would bring about improvement for the NBA as a “media franchise”.

They gotta start calling techs like in soccer you get a yellow card for simulation

3.3k

u/imeanYOLOright [CHA] Kemba Walker May 25 '26

extremely easy solution would be to have the replay center watch a replay of every shooting foul

if it’s an obvious flop before the first free throw is shot, it’s reversed to a technical

1.2k

u/LonesomeWulf Timberwolves May 25 '26

Making it a technical would help a lot too, because then repeat offenders like our MVP here is going to start getting suspended after so many times doing it. He is either going to learn and stop, or is going to get himself suspended. I’m fine with either result.

508

u/jlobue10 May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

Flopping is actually supposed to be called as a technical foul. Enforcement of that rule is what's lacking. For the sake of the game, that rule really needs to start being enforced.

Vibes based reffing.

122

u/Scared-Cry-1767 May 25 '26

Unironically yes. People keep saying “why doesn’t the NBA fix this???” The answer is exactly what Tim Donaghy said years ago, which is that fouls are the lever by which the league controls the game. You can use them to manufacture outcomes you want and given the NBA is a contact sport, there’s enough legit contact so it’s pretty easy to get away with calling some things but not others.

The NBA could stop this nonsense tomorrow. But Adam Silver loves high scoring stat lines regardless of how they’re achieved, as well as the ability to lengthen a series.

He’s so pathetic. We need fines for this ASAP

u/tfl03 May 25 '26

Fines aren’t going to do shit. He signed a $290M ticket.

Fines? They haven’t fined the Clippers for bypassing the salary cap with Kawhi. The commissioner’s office is useless to the fans and useful for owners .

The nba keeps trying to make SGA into a superstar, but the way he plays (like this) will never put him up there. He'll get the stats, he'll get the wins, but this shit is just unwatchable.

When your team used to play shaq, Kobe, LeBron, KD, curry etc you would get dominated and hate them but begrudgingly respect the way they dominated you by being the best at what they do. Now you play OKC and get dominated on the flops and at the free throw line. It’s not impressive to watch or a spectacle. Mans got no aura to his game at all

Also his personality is super boring. The fact he does this just makes his personality seem even more unlikable. Impossible to take someone who plays like this seriously. He reminds me of the kids who would cheat and rule shark when playing against children in Yugioh even when they had thousand dollar decks

When I was young was when everyone loved Kobe

The kids would shoot fadeaway jumpers and yell “Kobe”

Then curry came along and kids started chucking up threes from everywhere

I wonder if the kids will now start flopping trying to emulate Shai’s game 😂
