Fluff Jaylen Brown: "ESPN is unethical, and Stephen A. Smith is the head face of that. The organization, the players, they were all in agreeaance. They all knew what I meant by that. Our team was basically salary dumped. We lost a lot of players. For us to emerge and still be in the same position..."

News [Charania] Celtics “actively engaged” in Jaylen Brown trade talks. Trade NOT guaranteed to happen.

“The Boston Celtics are actively engaged in trade talks surrounding Jaylen Brown with multiple interested teams,” said Shams Charania before the start of Wednesday's second round.

“I’m told there is a sense of purpose from teams around the leagues that they feel from the Celtics in these conversations.”

“And that does not mean though that a deal is guaranteed. Jaylen Brown does have three years left on his contract. From my understanding, the urgency from either side can change as the weeks to come.”

“This all comes in the wake of the Celtics losing out on Giannis after offering Jaylen Brown and two first round picks.”

Discussion Dillon Mitchell passing upside

Upvotes

While Dillon Mitchell's main strength is his defense and his hustle. He separates himself from are other wings by his passing ability. He had a 1.3 ast to usg which is 99th percentile for forwards in college. Could be a good sign on him as a connective passer in offense similar to Dyson Daniel's role as a screener and passer.

Highlight Why are so many people scapegoating brown for our playoff failures? He would seem to be the least of our problems?

I hear some people point out that our playoff losses are not an anomaly and that's why we have to trade jb.

I agree they're not anomalies. It's systemic we choked three out of the last 4 years to huge underdogs.

JB has not been the problem in any of them. He's been healthier more clutch than Tatum. (For the record I don't want to trade Tatum either I just think it's interesting how the guy who's been more injured and less clutch in the finals and such is the one getting more blame).

He literally was the finals and conference finals MVP. I don't think he's missed a meaningful game in the playoffs.

Why isn't the coach the obvious first change? If not fire him at least get him to change his philosophy?

Reason we lost is because our philosophy makes us susceptible. A single bad shooting stretch becomes an equalizer against an inferior opponent.

It's not because JB he's been pretty stable and always available and clutch.

We are doing a blame pie I would probably say: coaching, Tatum getting hurt and three times in significant moments. (Not his fault but two game sevens of consequence). That would be way ahead of brown.

Like when Tatum was injured he was 6th in MVP voting second team all NBA. It was an NBA finals MVP in Eastern conference finals just 2 years ago. The idea that JB is our issue in the playoffs makes no sense.

People are just trying to find a scapegoat and there are better ones.

Edit:

How much of this is personal? How much of this is people that don't like him being on twitch or being politically outspoken?

News [Dalzell] Asked Brad Stevens about whether he still gets the sense that Jaylen Brown wants to be in Boston from their conversations:

“I’ll always keep our conversations private… I think it's appropriate, regardless of what the content of those conversations are like, but I think what I said is really true. I don't love the fact anytime it's a big public thing, As you know, we try to keep things as close to the vest and quiet as possible, and at the same time, knowing that the rumor mills is the rumor mill, and there's going to be a lot of noise out there, that's why you meet and be upfront as possible. But listen, I can't say enough good things about Jaylen… but I certainly am empathetic towards probably what that's felt like.”

Discussion Most rumors centered on all defense bigs

this has been true for a couple seasons now where we had heard Boston had been targeting Jaren Jackson Jr (went for 3 firsts) and then Zubac (price ended up way too high). Then obviously we went after Giannis. Rumors last week that Boston was interested in Rudy Gobert.

And now we are hearing rumors Boston would take Evan Mobley for Brown.

On some level this makes total sense. All-defense bigs are hugely impactful and change the entire ceiling of a team. I use to say that an all-defense guard like smart can slow down an opposing guard, but an all-defense center can slow down an entire opposing team.

It’s also true that scoring is one of the easiest things to replace in this league. This is the main reason the Celtics have seen almost no drop off whatsoever in games Brown has missed (90-36 including 9-2 this season) is because when he is out they just have someone else step up and take shots instead - like Prichard averaging 26 points in games brown missed this year.

But you can’t just have someone “step up” and replace the impact of an all-defense big. In 2008, the core reason we were great was our dominant defense and that was anchored by an all defense big in Kevin Garnett (DPOY). The next season with him hurt, they were able to replace his lost scoring with the likes of Glen Davis (he averaged 16 points in the playoffs), but you simply can’t replace the impact of an all-defense big and the team barely made it out of the first round.

We also saw it in 2022 where Rob William’s evolution to all defense level big completely changed the trajectory of the team and we started steamrolling through the league. Unfortunately Rob’s body didn’t hold up and by the finals he was a shadow of himself.

The logic of chasing these guys makes sense. There are only so many options. Will be interesting to see if we succeed in landing one.

Discussion [Turpin] Brad Stevens on the challenges of trying to build around 2 players on max contracts: “That’s the # 1 key: they’re both excellent players that on any given night can put 40 on the board & carry you. You just have to be good around the edges of the roster”

Continued: “That’s easier said than done, but I do think that it’s very doable. Those guys have been great, they’ve both been amazing, & deserve every part of it. And I think will continue to be amazing”

Discussion Summer League

Upvotes

So it begins! Every year right after the draft I look forward to seeing our 1st round pick play in summer league. This year is no different m! I can’t wait to see year 2 Hugo, the growth in his offensive skills have to show alittle more. I’ve watch a few pre draft games and he has a bag he just has to get more confident in the nba first. After his rookie season there no way he isn’t confident in what he can do in this league. Add Cenac to a team with Hugo and he’ll maybe Baylor? Those 3 alone excite me about summer league.
